For everyone trying to install XP on their VGN-NR110E/S, I have just compiled a completely working driver pack with instructions. Be sure to follow the instructions CAREFULLY and IN ORDER to ensure that all the devices work properly.
You can get the archive HERE -> http://rapidshare.com/files/97415280/VGN-NR110E.rar.html
There is a readme included in the archive, but I am also posting it here to prevent confusion.
These are the instructions to downgrade to Windows XP on a VGN-NR110E/S

1. Install XP on the laptop as normal using the disk you created.

!!! THESE STEPS MUST BE DONE IN ORDER !!! (Probably)
1. Move the "after install" folder in this archive over to your new XP laptop
2. Run "1 graphics.exe"
3. Run "2 backlight\MemAccDrvSetup.exe"
4. Run "2 backlight\vcredist_x86.exe"

11. In the bottom right corner of the screen, click the Intel graphics icon. Choose Options -> Panel Fit -> Stretch (No Border). (The exact buttons may be slightly different than this).
12. Install windows updates
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Usage
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Be aware that the brightness shortcut may be different that you are used to. Instead of using the FN key along with the brightness buttons, you must press the WINDOWS key along with the brightness buttons. The volume keys work as normal, using the FN key.

Good Luck

Oh man. I love you dude. You're my savior; my own personal Jesus Christ. Thanks!!!
-
You dudes rock! my Vista is randomly starting to crash and random crap isn't loading on startup... THREE hard shutdowns today!!
XP time!!!
What doesn't work @ this point, other than brightness? If I hit WindowsButton+Volume keys, will it volume up and down? -
Volume is controlled normally - FN+Volume keys
To my knowledge, absolutely everything works. -
nice! thank you!
I just want to make sure - will this work fine for nr11s/s as well? -
uhh... i have no idea. I only know this will work on the VGN-NR110E/S. Did you mean NR110S? Then yes, I believe the S/E is the color of the laptop.
-
I mean this one. It's NR11S/S, could you have a quick look and tell me if your drivers will work on this notebook? If it's almost the same hardware inside, then I reckon it will do. But please, check and let me know. I need WinXP so bad.
-
it looks like someone made a driver pack for your model over at http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=208077 about three quarters of the way down the first page. Oh wait... you posted over there. Why are you posting here then
-
hehe, yeah, I know about that one because I've started that topic
and why am I posting here? well, I guess your tutorial seems simply better - yesterday I prepared all the files for creating bootable .iso, all went well, then I realized that this might not work because it's a slightlydifferent notebook. that's why I asked
anyway, I'll try... thank you! -
I downgraded my Sony Vaio VGN-NR110E from Vista to XP. Now, it is working well in windows xp..but I have a small problem. I can not burn DVD driver in windows XP Pro (error: Incorrect function)while i run windows vista..it have worked well, help me..
-
incorrect function? It almost seems like a software issue to me. Did you install nero or some other burning software? I may be a bit biased, but those things tend to screw up disk burners.
-
i try install nero 7.0(old version nero 6.6) but those situation still happened..When i put blank DVD into DVDRW drive,i have this problem
:while i put blank CD ..
-
Windows does not seem to detect the capacity of a Blank DVD correctly, however, CD Burner XP Pro (my favorite burning software) works perfectly. I just burned a DVD full of files with it.
If you don't have it already, go get it (google cdburnerxp). Its free, and you really will wonder how you ever lived with the broken software they call "Nero".
I would also strongly suggest you uninstall Nero. I actually have experience with it BREAKING the dvd-rom drivers, only allowing me to burn after a reformat. -
i was finally able to install xp, but i want to ask what does slipstream do... although im in xp, some of my drivers arent working correctly... -
if some of your drivers aren't working then you didn't slipstream correctly. Did you follow the instructions exactly? Which drivers aren't working? Basically, slipstreaming puts the drivers for the laptop right onto the install disk (so you have them from the beginning). Installing them AFTER you install windows tends to be much less reliable.
-
so basically slipstreaming will install those drivers for you so you don thave to do any work after you install window xp?
i reinstalled xp again and i did NOTHING ELSE, and im waiting for your commands...
because basically i dont any of the thing working..... sd card, sound etc... (i got brightness to work well though) i appreciate your helps
im really noob at this... thanks -
yes, slipstreaming is basically like "installing those drivers for you" so you dont have to do it afterward. Its strange that you don't have sound, sd, or anything, all those should be included in the slipstream process... Do you have networking? If not, you must be doing something wrong in the slipstream process.
Let me confirm this simple question first - When you are installing XP on the laptop, are you using a normal XP disk or an XP disk which you created using nLite (as in the instructions)? -
i got wireless
i used the disk(iso) that was created by nlite(NOT the original one USED to make the iso) -
Did you do windows updates update yet? Go to update.microsoft.com and make sure you choose to do "Microsoft Updates," not "Windows Updates." Also, be sure to click "Hardware Updates" on the list on the left.
I seem to remember it installing an update to the card reader. That may have been when it started working. It may have also installed a audio update. -
ok i got sound to work...
this is what i dont have as of now, and i am aware that i them have them are... SD card thing (does not read my 4gb sdhc), i dont have that thing in the bottom where it shows your battery life. and i guess those are the only 2 functions that arent working for me yet...
so i hope you can help me with the SD card reader, thanks in advance!!! -
the battery doesn't even have a driver... it just doesnt show the icon when it's plugged in
For the memory card, make sure you followed my instructions about windows update.
1. go to update.microsoft.com
2. Click switch to microsoft update
3. Install
4. go to update.microsoft.com
5. Choose custom
6. Click hardware (after it scans)
7. select everything -
ok there was 2 thing sin the hardware update thing... 1 was networking and the other was some texas instrument... i intalled them.. but the sd card stil doesnt work...................
anything else that might help me? -
texas instruments is the maker of the media card chipset. Did you reboot? (I would hope so :L).
-
yea i did reboot..., but it still didnt work...
im thinking of reformating again... -
Wow, I really do appreciate everybody's work especially "Fn" Key replacement program.(I can not believe it works.)
But, I have some additional questions to ALL.
I found another problem with XP.
It can not go into the "Stand By" or "Hibernation" Mode.
This laptop does require some driver for power related component.
Does any one have same trouble like me?
Does nay one have solution for this?
Please let me know ASAP! -
Power management works fine on mine. Have you installed all the windows updates? (That seems to be a global fix for everything).
-
but i really appreciate what you have done! -
oh and should i install the hardware BEFORE or AFTER i got the service pack 2 and the other updates...? -
well, the disc i slipstreamed had sp2 on it already, but i would probably say afterwards (you want the sp2 updates, its pointless to install updates for sp0/1)
-
dayum... it still didnt work... you got any ideas to fix my problem...?
thanks man -
I have also experienced this problem that is being described. The first time this occurred I reinstalled Windows XP but, it occurred again. Basically once the computer goes into hibernation or standby and comes back it no longer recognizes the wireless adapter but, it does have a new device in device manager that says Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus. I cannot find any drivers or information about this device. I tried all the Windows updates and searched on the internet. The only Microsoft knowledge base article that seemed related was an update that was included in SP1a and SP2.
This morning when I turned on the computer the wireless was back all on it's own and the Modem Device was still there too. I think I am going to set my laptop not to standby or hibernate for now. I am going to keep looking for a solution though and I will report what I find.
I want to thank all the people in this forum for all the work they did to get xp working on this laptop. I can't stand Vista and I can't reinstall it because my laptop didn't come with a recovery dvd(I deleted the recovery partition, smart I know). And I don't want to pay Sony $25 for a replacement DVD, matter of principle for me.
Otherwise Windows XP has performed flawlessly . Thanks. -
hey so the SD card reader works for you too?
because i have reformatted my laptop numerous times hoping that the SD card reader would work... but my effort was futile....
is there something you guys can upload for me so that it will fix my problem?
other than the SD card reader not working, XP on NR110e is flawless and great! -
Are you trying to read an sdhc card? I've only tried non-sdhc cards, so perhaps that's whats causing the problem?
-
yea probably... oh well, i guess its not that big of a deal anyway
but THANK YOU for helping me downgrade successfully! -
I finally found the last piece to the puzzle, the HD Audio Modem Drivers. They can be downloaded here:
http://www.xpvistaworld.com/hdaudio_softv92_data_fax_modem_with_smartcp_819.htm
I am not sure if someone wants to add them to one of the install packages but, I was able to install the modem(not that I will ever use it) and all of my other devices work flawlessly. When my modem first appeared, as described in a previous post, it killed my wireless adapter. The wireless adapter was not visable in devices until after I restarted. If your wireless adapter doesn't show up you could try to install these drivers and see if that helps. Thanks for all the help guys. -
neokill175 and others,
I re-install for another testing, it is still not working with "Stand By" or "Hibernation" Mode. It just restarted.
I had tried to "check mark" under Power Option/Hibernate under control panel, it does not make any difference.
Help...
I install XP2(no driver),install video,nic,wirless driver,windows update,sound,modem,card reader,windows update,FnKey
Driver wise, everything is functing okay.
Just "Stand By" or "Hibernation" Mode problem!
Help! Please ASAP!!! -
idk dude... it works fine for me... just my sd card reader doesnt seemto be working...
you slipstream?
maybe its the xp operation cd? -
I used slipstream just for SATA driver. (Brand New, Clean Install)
Then I installed all device drivers manually:
Intel Chipset - Intel Video - NIC - WNIC - Windows Update(3 updates) - Sound(w/Patch) - Modem - Memory Card Reader - Windows Update(90 updates) - FnKey Utility from this site
Didn't u install any power/sony dll for power management realted solution with in slipstream or as driver package?
It is like 98% perfect. Only 2% missing is "stand by/Hibernation" mode.
Am I the only who is facing this problem? I do not think so.
I reinstall almost 5-6 times to figure out this problem...
For me, SD cards works fine.(I did not test the memory stick).
I think, I even found the way to fix the undisplaying icon issue.
Please HELP!!! Any driver/utility to fix this?
I searched all SONY(US,Asia,Europe,Australia even Japan), but I still did not find the right one...
I really like to clear this 2% issue and settle with XP!
ASAP! -
does anyone knows if this steps works for a VGN-NR160?
because windows vista is too slow and not very functional...
if works, i just have to format and re-install the windows XP and after that, the drivers?
tksssssssssssss

anyone have a problem with standby? and S1, AV MODE key?
-
hey! pointdooly you can use FN key? so do you have a driver for this ok so can you post it up to me?
-
Sorry to confuse you(ken001)!
No...
I can only use FN key for brightness from previous posted tool with window key. So, just like you I have two problems that I could not figure out.
1. "stand by/Hibernation" mode => It just restarts!
2. AV mode, S1 Key, Fn Key
I kind a give up for "Fn Key" cause I had already tried more then 20 - 30applications from Sony for similar models all of the world.
But I really DO need to make the "stand by/Hibernation" working.
Please give me some info if anybody has it.
I had tried all Microsoft "stand by/Hibernation" patches. Non of them works.
Hope somebody can provide me the solution!!! -
and yea i reinstalled over 6 times trying to get my sd card to work.. i know how you feel, but good luck man!! -
so pointdooly can you post the software use the window key for brightness and how to use it?
-
Dear Ken001!
Just jump to page10 and follow instruction made by doublem (Notebook Enthusiast). It works for brightness.
So, we can use
- Volume Up/Down with Fn Key like normal sony style.
- Birghtness Up/Down with Windows Key
But
- the others keys(like S1, AV mode) still does not work!
- stand by/Hibernation mode is a major problem!
I will test icon issue once more then I will post it again.
But I think I figure out the missing icon for Memory Stick.
Hope it helps! -
ok thank you i'll try
you don't have icon of Memory Stick i have it, so i can send it to you -
and 1 thing when i try to use back light in page 10, first i install MemACdv and then run vcredis-X86 and then run backlight.exe but and my screen turn to a little dark and how can you use win F5 and F6 to control, i can't use it
-
restart your comp go to the bottom right intel graphic icon and do the stretch border thing
and you should be able to control brightness level with no difficulties
just read the directions VERY carefully, and make sure you do EXACTLY as its told and you will be fine. =] -
ok thank, it's work
-
I was wondering if any one else out there has their headphone jack working on their VGN-NR110E running XP. Thanks.
