In my opinion, it is a fake.![]()
In the image released by FCC, the notebook back panel is glossy. Is this picture, it is not (like TT)
-
Left hand side looks a bit dodgy, and it wouldn't be the first fake pictures. The keyboard is the same as a TT isn't it?
-
Engadget has confirmed its a fake
-
Its an "artist's render".
a TrackPoint would be nice to have. -
No thanks - unless it has a touchscreen!
-
LoL, its an atom 1.33, prob with no more than 1gb of ram. I doubt it will be priced higher than 800 dollars; this is due to their "superior screen" (referring to their resolution). Also, if the P can pack more than 5+ battery life, that would be awsome.
Sony, IMO does not over price their laptops more than apple. Esp when Sony always have coupons available to save more than 150 dollars or more when Macs dont give you anything. I hate it on this forum when ppl start to bad mouth about Sony pricing when in fact these Mac fanboys pay 1750CND for a 2.4 ghz with backled keyboard when I purchased my SR same thing with Switch mode for less than 1350CND ($400 dollar difference, NO THANKS APPLE). In this example, I ain't even referring to their rediculous MBPs. So shut up with the overpriced... Go buy your mac. -
Touchscreen would IMO be a big mistake for such a device.
-
I doubt that the P series will start at £545/$800. I also doubt that it has going to have an atom processor. It probably is going to be have a Core solo or a core 2 duo 1.33 processor. Probably price wise they will no cheaper than the UX models.
-
ditto.....

Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
What is the point of this if all it is is a small TT with no optical drive (just as expensive)?
-
smaller and lighter. two very important facts in world of ultra portables.
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
But still there is no point. Why would someone buy a $1k dollar Vaio P over a netbook? The only advantage I see is the higher resolution screen. -
sonoritygenius Goddess of Laptops
Sony will probably realize this in a year and discontinue it.
But on the fun side, my guess would be "it fits in the pocket!" lol
-
Why? Which netbooks offers "normal" SSD and so great display? and.. 5+ hour battery.
For some people...even 8" screen is the difference they need, and not all people look at price. Sony was never ment to be for general population. -
There is already a "pocketable" notebook around - the Raon Digital Everun Note.
It comes with a 7" screen and an AMD dual-core 64-bit processor and ATi graphics. It costs about $800 from a brand few have heard of. My guess is that the Sony will come in at $1500 or so.
-
^
I was reading a review of that a little while ago. It comes with a 1,024x600 resolution and a 1.2 ULV AMD dual core processor.

Well, the uses of the small netbook is perfect for travellers. I travel a lot with my parents around the world, and to be honest, I hate it when you have nothing to do for so long. A netbook with long hours is DEFInately perfect due to portability and PURE WIN if it has long lasting battery life. Many students too in my university love netbooks, perfect to replace a "notebook"(litterly) to write notes in class and read some email, etc. Many applications for students/travellers don't need Quad core to run,.
Now, the question is the PRICING. I doubt SOny will go over the 1k mark due to the "netbook" market they are trying to capture. They already have the TT and some other similar small size series for over 2k. They do not want to canabilize their own market shares of the TT (production cost + marketing cost for the TT will strongly discourage them to make a product to compete in the TT market sector; ultraportables) so they will penetrate the netbook market with netbook market product + pricing, perhaps "premium" netbook pricing. But premium for netbooks is still below 1k.
Depending on how stupid the executives @ Sony are, and depending on what market the product is defined in, we can predict the price. My best guess is they are definately trying to attract NETBOOK users, and most netbook users buy netbooks because of the cheap, but mobile machines. The marketing department WILL NOT price it higher than 1k if their product is catergorized in the netbook sector. Again, I doubt they are going to introduce a product to compete with the TT, so again I can be pretty sure it will be below 1K. -
The Sony guy in the interview said the main thing netbooks are lacking is that they don't fit inside your pocket. So that will be the main advantage I guess.

lol if i bought one of these i think i would use it to play roms only who's with me?

Wow, I bet this would be a serious on the road, web surfer
-
VHP + even slower than the fastest Atom = to quote Steve Jobs "A world of hurt".
-
A man once walked into an exclusive camera shop in NYC. He asked the closest salesman if they had any disposable cameras, you know, the ones you use once and that's it.
The man said, "Sir, all of the cameras in this shop are disposable. If you buy one you can dispose of it in any manner you see fit, after as many uses as you would like
"
So, if you've got deep enough pockets to fit the Vaio P, by all means use it to play ROMs.
-
Two new pics of the P's keyboard are over at Pocketables.net and Engadget (on my PSP, so can't add links //Thanks Jay!).
No lettering is visable at all on the keys, so hopefully the keyboard is backlit! -

For ****'s sake, it's going to be a Core 2 Duo 1.33GHz CPU, leagues ahead of the single core atoms 90% of other netbooks (and the P's competitors) use.
Use your common sense, why would Sony use a single core 1.33GHz Atom when they could easily use a 1.6GHz Atom? And regarding the RAM, I'm sure Sony will allow support for 2GB RAM. -
2GB? I am sure it will be a single slot machine with up to 4Gs of RAM possible. I doubt they will use some old chipset that does not support 4Gs.
About CPU, I honestly cant see sony to use Atom here, unless they will really make a super cheap machine, which i doubt too. -
Because it causes less heat. In such a small machine that's important.
I think what really hurts Steve is when he looks at the sales numbers of netbooks
-
I suspect that a C2D 1.33 dual core with an appropriate chipset would produce less heat than the standard Atom setup.
Anyhow, I would much prefer that Sony made a gorgeous machine which was speed-competitive with the TT/TZ (but no CD-drive) but is expensive (well, less expensive than the TT/TZ would be nice) rather than something which is godawfully slow.
A C2D 1.33 + Ion + Intel SSD for less than 2 grand would be awesome. I might buy one.
-
Dont forget UMTS/HSDPA card integrated for internet everywair
-
Dual core is a major possibility because I think Sony executives said that the major flaw for netbooks was that they are "too slow," or something of that nature.
-
It's "A Bag Of Hurt"
-
everywair?? really?? come on...
-
I thought blu-ray was "a bag of hurt" --
-
blu-ray? have you ever seen a bd movie on a nice tv with surround sound??
-
Well i know that the US UX models had WWAN built in. A growing number of netbooks though also have HSDPA built in now. Dell offer this and so do Asus also.
I think that it is the CPU and resolution that is going to put a price premium on this laptop. Extras like HSDPA do add to the overall cost as well. -
I have, it's to die for. I can't go back to 720p, 1080 is like a drug now for me.
-
I think you're right. That's what Steve Jobs claimed.
-
Sorry, I only watched it once so my memory may not be perfect. Unfortunately despite (or perhaps because) owning more crApples than the most committed Jobs fanboi can slobber over, I can only bear the smugfest one time around
-
Haha, I didn't mean it like that... my collection of blu-rays is over 150 right now... I'm a huge blu-ray supporter.
I was referring to the bag of hurt quote where Steve Jobs claimed that blu-ray was a bag of hurt!
-
haha sorry about that...i never saw the "bag of hurt" quotes except for what i have read here. My quote is now directed towards Mr. Jobs...
edit: btw, nice collection!! Wish i could afford that, but for now renting is good enough... -
Any more news about this model? I asked around but nobody knows much, not even some sony offices in europe.
but only a few more days left! -
Well will it even be coming out in Europe?- it took ages for the UX series to arrive in europe, and it was quickly withdrawn. Other U series never sold in europe.
Having said that I saw a video of a Soyn European Director talking about pocketable devices so maybe it will come out in Europe
I expect the Japan site will release some more screen shots soon, they are doing a gradual release of information like they did with the ux launch -
I don't believe these specs as they don't sound like a Sony who tend to go for high powered Intel chips, but posting for completeness
http://www.umpcportal.com/2009/01/new-sony-umpc-info-includes-specs-and-a-sub-1000-price -
Well, GPS and UMTS sounds like sony - but why UMTS if HSDPA is available??
(or is it the same) -
Actually I believe these specs. 1.33Ghz makes sense because of the TDP.
700 euro seems not too bad. I would have expected a bit more. I wonder what kind of weight we'll get. -
This ic crap. Atom CPU, why the hell? But for 700 Euros this machine is too good, so with LV C2D it would be over 1k
-
Well i didn't think that they were going to use an 1.33 Atom CPU in this laptop. I thought that they would use a Core Solo or Core 2 Duo ULV and price it at about £950+.
The Core solo ULV processors have a TDP of 5.5 watts and the Core 2 Duo ULV processors have a TDP of 10 watts. A core solo would have still given marginally better performance but it would have pushed the price up.
These specs are close to what i was thinking about when i talked about a stripped down TT but still i was not thinking that they would go for such a 1.33 Intel Atom a 1.6 Intel Atom would have been better.
I wonder what battery life will be like with this laptop. This laptop will pretty much strictly be a travel laptop.
If the price is right i think that these probably will sell well. -
Looks decent...I am only concerned about the screen
-
What I think Sony should do is provide customers a choice of including either an Atom for cheap or an ULV Core 2 Duo processor for performance.
-
^that will cost too much to Sony.
