SR Photos: it honestly looks like a scaled up Z that's slightly thinner but much wider.

i tink i've more or less decided on the SR, save me that extra bit of money so I can buy myself a ps3 too
-
The Z all the way. Check out the one configured for $2049. But the one for $2349 is even better. Hey, your only $349 away, just splurged.
I think so too, but my hunch he's a GAMER. LoL
If you haven't worked on an 11/1 screen; don't bother. I had the chance to borrow a friends TZ. I gave it back after 2 days. AWFUL. -
Any idea on when the TZ-4xx series will come out?
Then again, I made the mistake of buying an end of the run FE (890), so I might reconsider. -
Let me put it this way: I find my 14.1" clunky. I don't think I'll mind the small screen as much as the reduced keyboard, but I'm not sure the Z at 13" is much of a compromise. I'd rather go ultraportable and just use it for work.

Are you guys getting a service plan with your orders? whats the warranty on these?
-
My recommendation: buy it with a credit card that offers extended warranty service. Some companies will double your warranty AND replace/pay for service if it breaks, no questions asked.
-
Thanks for all the help, what do you guys think:

2 questions on the Z...
1) where can i purchase the decking for it?
2) the estimated shipping time is unknown... when do you think I can get it (i'm in california) -

I wonder if the Z series is Made in Japan like the SZ??
-
i wish the blu-ray read/write drive on Z was a little cheaper...
-
Hey Ohio99, what site did you get these photos from, are the more photos of the Z in different angles. I need to see one from the back view to see how the hinge looks when the Z lid is closed. Just to see if its like the TZ.
-
not sure, but my sz680 was made in San Diego, California actually...
-
This is straight from the sonystyle US website.
-
There are 3 Sony assembly plants in the SoCal Area.
-
So anyone preorder yet?
-
Pulled the trigger on a black SR: 2.4Ghz, 4GB, ATI HD 3470, 320GB HDD, VHP
Should ship by end-of-month. Can't believe there was no Blu-ray. Oh well. WTF. The FW is just too big and gray. SR is exactly what I went searching for 2 months ago. BD crept in there as a "gotta have" but it had to go. I figure if Sony can cram a BD burner in the Z then I'll be able to swap one into the SR later. I almost went for the Z but couldn't believe the BD burner was only available for 1600x900 screen. Are they nuts? -
prayfully the SEA vaios are all made in japan...
-
Did you have a choice for what type of shipping you wanted? Express, standard etc.?
-
Did you have a choice for what type of shipping you wanted? Express, standard etc.?
How much your setup cost? I may do similar to you, or go with a Z -
you just stated all the facts as to why they aren't nuts.
why would you want a Bluray drive on the SR? Why would the BD be more suited on the SR than the Z? Also, if you don't already know, vaios are hard to customise once out of the factory, the schematics are way more complicated than other laptops. You will be hard done by thinking you can simply swap a BD in at a later time.
Having the BD available on the 1600x900 is fair enough. That would make full use of the BD and HDMI as opposed to the 1280x800 on the SRs or 1366x768 screen on the non BD Z's.
You pay for what you get, if you're not willing to fork out for the high resolution 1600x900 Z series, i don't see how the bluray drive is gonna serve you any better on a 1280x800 screen. -
Here I've been talking Blu-ray for weeks as a "gotta have" and now I go and order an SR and there's no Blu option. WTF. To hell with it. I'll get one later on eBay and swap it out. I just can't wait for Sony to phase-in Blu-ray on the SR (which I'm certain they will do eventually).
-
Yes. Free 3-5 days. $69 for 2 day. $89 for next day.
-
No setup cost. I didn't opt for that. You can go to Sonystyle and configure and see all the options. Just for fun.
-
I think several speculations, andmight i add accurate speculations were that bluray wasn't gonna be available on the SRs and almost exclusive to the FW and Z series laptops only. No one ever put up a spec sheet that had a BD option for the SR. I don't understand why you are so surprised that the option to add a bluray drive on wasn't available for the SR.
-
Does sonystyle.com shop work for european users? Can't get anything out of it after I choose "Z" and press "Shop now". Tried firefox and explorer.
-
where can i buy the decking for the Z? and if i order the whole package.. when should i be able to receive it? (im in cali)
-
1600x900 on a 13.1" screen for these old eyes ain't gonna happen. I need to read text too. I'm sure BD movies look very nice on that screen but the lower res option would be the ideal compromise for me. As for my reasons for wanting Blu-ray, I have a collection of over 100 titles and I wanted the option of playing them on my laptop...whichever one I opted for. Obviously, it's not a primary function so I can live without it. As for upgrading later, you probably are correct and I'd destroy the thing so scratch that idea. I've got my damn PS3 for Blu-ray.
-
<Shrug> Are you trying to pick on me, man? Let it go.
-
chill chill
-
nah i'm not picking on you. i'm trying to explain to you why the missing bluray drive addon option on the SR is nothing novel, is all.
-
If you can create an account with a European address, you should be able to order from them.
-
In Cali too, would like to know as well. Need it by the 20th badly.
-
Cool. Anyway I remember those speculations and thought "Why would Sony not have at least a Blu-ray reader option at this point". So I figured they were wrong. Now I suspect there were some insiders feeding those "speculations". Oh, well. I made the right choice with the SR I think. I'm buying a laptop afterall...not a portable Blu-ray player!! As for the Z, it is really killer but it's for "executives on the go" per Sony and I am not one...just a lowly developer. And since I'm coming from an HP 15.4" behemoth that belches heat, the SR at 4.15 lbs and all low power components is going to be very, very nice. I'll be back with lots of feedback, benchmarks, etc. once I put it through it's paces.
-
Does anyone else noticed that you cannot select HiColor in FW?
-
what's the main difference on the CTO:
Model Number: VGN-Z590
Model Number: VGN-Z540
seems like they're both customized to my liking, so how come such a big price difference? -
Just a heads up when configuring your new laptop on Sonystyle. The 2.5Ghz processors for FW and SR are 35 watt T processors whereas the 2.5Ghz processor for the Z is the 25 watt version P processor. So if getting an FW or SR, you may want to consider a 2.4 Ghz 25 watt P processor (if heat and battery are important for you). On the other hand, the 2.5Ghz has 6MB L2 cache vs. 3MB L2 cache for the 2.4Ghz so that may be a deciding factor for you. I went with 2.4Ghz because I want the lowest heat footprint since I'll be using it exclusively on my lap.
-
I just did it and I did it about an hour ago. Click hard.
-
The main difference is on the display. VGN-Z590 is 1600x900 and VGN-Z540 is 1366x768. Besides, blu-ray and SSD are limited to VGN-Z590.
-
Screen resolution is different. Also, the 590 has a Blu-ray burner option...the 540 does not. Wonderful Sony marketing.
-
I am interested in the Z590UAB but the spec doesn't list blu-ray. That sucks for a $4k laptop.
-
So the case is the same? Both Carbon Fiber?
I don't need the blu ray burner, and i actually work on a 1280x800 resolution right now, so the display isn't a factor either.
I just want the Z, and if its both the same case after i'm done configuring it, forget the 590, i'm going with the 540 -

I just hope these come to Canada soon man. And for 2.4ghz vs the 2.5ghz, I dunno what to go for. Is the 3mb cache extra really gonna make a big difference? I use it for basic gaming like Battlefield 2. I would rather have a prebuilt than CTO cuz the quality of the prebuilt is a lot better as its manufactured vs being hand assembled and people accidentally dropping ram stick on the floor and sticking back in. Oops!..Yea oops up urs buddy. And we're talkin Americans here that dont wash their hands frequently.
-
stlil dont know where can i buy a decking for the z?
and how long will it take to ship?? (i'm in cali) -
I just saw that too. Configure it yourself and add Blu-ray burner for $500.
-
-=ToRoNtO-GuYY=- Notebook Evangelist
I already mentioned that in the previous post guys lol. I went on to mention ur better off getting a PS3 instead. -
Indeed. It's not allowed to have both SSD and blu-ray at same time in Z model. Sony has a weird configuration on Z model.
-
I have an estimated ship date of 07/28/2008 for my CTO SR. Not bad...that's the same leadtime that Dell is quoting for stuff they've had for a year. So that means the Sony factory line is ready to roll. Hope they've figured out how to assemble them before they get to mine!!
-
Do you guys think that the price may drop in a month or so or maybe there will be n e sweet deals like 50 dollars off the harddrive?
-
Lol you guys typed up 30 pages while I was sleeping
But damn they look good.
Maybe because the 2nd SSD takes up some space?
