I need a laptop for college this year. I love the Sony Vaio FZ series, but there are two things holding me back from deciding on it.
1) Only an 8400M GT
2) Only a 1280 x 800 resolution
Sony should realize that people want to buy the FZ series, but many are not because the graphics card is insufficient.
-
Well one thing is obvious, there are a lot that are very excited about Sony's new notebooks and want them to come out ASAP, myself included.
-
Don't forgot the insufficient battery life (1-1.5 hours, probably b/c of double-lamp screen) and the issue of overheating.
Sony should start:
1. using LED screen (brighter+power efficient)
2. make better fans/cooling systems in their notebooks
3. offer higher-end graphics
4. offer more screen options in terms of resolution (1650x1050, 1900x1200)
I'm really looking forward to Sony's new new notebooks, and I hope they improve in these areas. Sony hasn't made any announcements yet. Let's hope they'll show us something good.
P.S. I wanted to get the FZ series too. The graphics card and battery life is just insufficient.
-
Why would they delay the SZ announcement? Considering the month delay already and the upcoming school season, you would think Sony would want to announce the full gamut of new models ASAP?
-
They are waiting for the new Intel chipsets, they can't release new models until the new chipsets are released.
An announcement wouldn't benefit SONY or any notebook manufacturer unless a ship date can be quoted.
Andrew -
Right, that explains why they postponed it to mid-july. Regardless, other manufacturers have leaked info before this time. My point was about Helldeamon's comment on not announcing the SZ successor next month.
-
HP has announced their new lineups already, without the official launch of Centrino 2.
I think it would be advantageous to Sony if they just announce the new Centrino 2 notebooks, so that the consumers can decide if the new notebooks are worth waiting for.
But then again, that might work against them...
-
Right, they could announce the new models in advance, but then the sales of their current notebooks would suffer.
-
True. Maybe they're just taking their time in announcing their new models. It must be something really good.
-
On the other hand delaying the announcement of new models they loose a lot of customers that they already pre-order Montevina notebooks. Look Dell...they already announce the E4200 and E4300 based of the Centrino 2 two months ago...I have friends of mine that ordered now for September. So why not announce the new series when anyway few people are buying now?
I hope Sony will not waste time releasing a low-cost sub-notebook for making competition to all these Asus EEE, Mini-HP, Wind...I am waiting an upgrade of SZ with blu-ray and in September a refresh of the TZ. By the way anyone know if also the SFF Montevina are going to have a delay? -
The SFF Montevina will be delayed up to the Fall (late September/early October). Also, Sony should definitely announce their notebooks now. They will lose out on a lot of customers who have already pre-ordered notebooks from other companies.

You guys either did not read my other post, or simply refusing to listen. 4 or 5Sony Stores I asked already mentioned they have a new SZ series coming out July-Augest. SZ780's will be disconntinued and new SZ platform will come, with a new design and what not. All Sony Store's said the samething, obviously they know it is coming out. This all started when I asked about the SZ780 being in stock.
-
No one is doubting the new SZ series is coming. Everyone is looking for Sony's official announcement, dates, and most importantly, pictures of the new line ups.
-

Loll, I wont say this again, and pld sont make me. This is Sony themselves telling me!!! Yea Sony, not Panasonic, not RCA, not Kodak, but Sony man, Sony thats right, Sony. The End. End of blog, the end everything. -
What are you talking about? No one is doubting you, everyone knows about the upcoming release. You don't need to phone Sony to know that much. It's pretty obvious.
-
-=ToRoNtO-GuYY=-, no one is doubting what you have said.
However, all of us are just waiting for Sony to release an official statement about the new series with the full line-ups (actual specifications, models, prices, pictures, etc.) to the general public. -
Thanks -=ToRoNtO-GuYY=- for calling around and offering the info. to us.

Which video card that Sony is going to put with the FW series?

SpaceCowboy1973 Notebook Enthusiast
Ati Mobility Radeon HD 3470 -

I asked in a Sony Centre here (UK) about the TZ series at the weekend. They hadn't any in stock and neither had any other store he checked on the system... including their 'flagship Vaio store'. He said that meant it was likely that new models were on the way, although he didn't have any details.
The prices are still sky high on the Sony Style EU web site, though... so not everyone is trying very hard (yet) to clear their stock of the current models. -
Officially we'll see the models on July 15th here in the US, pictures specs and the works. Will there be leaks in the meantime? Maybe, but Sony's been pretty good so far with these new releases in not tipping their hand too early.

One more month to go

i am back once again to look at new Sony laptops... time to replace my 4 month old FZ

Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
I use a 5 year old Dell. Can I please have your FZ?
-
I don't even have a notebook anymore, so I deserve it...
-
Hey,
I have called yesterday SS FRANCE and they told me ... wait in 8 to 10 weeks new SZ are coming , so even in Europe this rumor is confirmed ... but thats weird we don't even have some pics from the inside . I'm sure they are preparing something really big ......

Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
Don't they mean SR? -
I hope this isn't the only option Sony will be offering for the graphics card in their upcoming FW series. How about a 9800GTX?
-
Don't you mean SR series? Can't wait!
-
By the way, did they tell you any of the specifications? The CPU/GPU?
-
Sony keeps secretly all the info about new models and one day boom it comes! So the specs are impossible to predict. Hope soon we will know, can't wait anymore for new design for the SZ and TZ.
-
Great to read this thread, looking forward to any news.
It's weird, al those configs have disappeared from that site.
The Vaio FW is available for pre order here:
http://www.hd.nl/p/SONY/VGNFW11MNL3 -
Are the new Montevina Sony's going to be pretty well outfitted (ie, 4gb ram, min. of 256mb video)?
I'm leaving for college in late August, going into engineering at MIT, and I would hate to wait for the new models and end up with an early line model with wimpy specs.
Also, if they are released mid-late July, will customized models make it out by my late August deadline?
If not, the current Vaio's on the shelves should go down in price, so I'll hunt from there. -
It's great that the new FW series will have 16.4inch screens! Just the right size between a 15" and a 17".
I hope Sony offers more options for customization. The T8400 2.4Ghz doesn't seem adequate for performance. I also hope that Sony offers high-end graphics cards (512MB-9700GTS, 9800GTS, 9800GTX etc.).

Oh yeah baby the new SR 13,3" has been spotted, info:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=262091

VAIO VGN-Z11WN / P8600 4GB 250GB 13.1" WVB 2276.71€ -
Be aware that the model they found on the site doesn't have the correct picture, but a picture of an AR instead, so you still won't have an idea of what it looks like.
-
Yes, and no mention of display connections. I wonder if the SR will have HDMI/DVI only on a docking station?
-
Looks like the new TZs are out. I see VGN-TZ350N/B VGN-TZ370N/B .....
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
I wonder if these will change to Centrino 2 specs, or will they stay the same as the 200 series and offer nothing new? -
Nope, just minor refreshes, like the TZ398 has a 320gb HDD instead of 250gb in the TZ298.
The Montevina ULV processors won't be out until September at the earliest, so no way these could have them now.
-
Agree. Sony is just refreshing its line-up. The newer models will be announced this summer and will be available by autumn. The newer TZ series with the Montevina ULV processors(will be announced in September) and will be available much later though. Unless there is a change in schedule.
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
So what is the point of the 300 series?
-
Make more money
-
So they are refreshing their lineups only a few months before they come with a totally new design? That doesnt seem logical to me
-
Minor refresh to give more options is not uncommon practice among all notebook manufacturers.
Still, I am a little bit disappointed that the 128GB SSD, 5400RPM 1.8" HDD and 7200RPM 2.5" HDD did not make the option list. I know they are new and going to drive up the price, but they really address some of the "imperfections" that TZ has -- I would love to have a TZ that just has one 320GB 7200RPM HDD and no SSD/1.8"HDD/Optical inside. It would be a little bit waste of internal space, but it would the perfect specs and price.
Anyway, good time to buy the hugely discounted TZ200 series now. -
Cmon ??? which will have the 3G+ .. ???
-
VAIO VGN-Z11WN / P8600 4GB 250GB 13.1" WVB 2276.71€
Why only 2.2k Euros ? SZ71 was about 2500 Euros no ? -
Maybe this is 3 months before the change. Does not seem so strange to me. It's not like this is some major refresh
