this may be out of scope for this thread but... if someone was so inclined and crazy... do you think the power media dock from the Z will work on the S. It uses a standard usb 3.0 connection. however it is an amd. so dual graphics with an amd probably wont work too well.

Nope, because it doesn't use a standard USB 3.0 connection. It uses an early adaptation of the Lightpeak project, nowadays known as Thunderbolt. Besides, the GPU in the S15/S13 is faster anyway, especially with the mod.

Hi guys :)! I am new to this Mod Bios.

I have a model of SVS15116GAB, this is from U.A.E.

    Bios Version: R0142C5

    i7-3612QM @ 2.1GHz
    4 GB RAM
    nVidia GeForce GT640 M LE 2GB
    LCD size: 15.15"
    resolution: 1920 x 1080

Using stock bios, I run 3dMark11 & the score result is: P1421 & GPU temperature is around 58c.
Played with NFS Shift2, I played on settings 720p, no anti-anlias, with motion blur set to low, shadows set to medium, the rest is High.
FPS: (29-55), GPU temperature is 60c.

After a lot of reading to this thread, I finally decided to give it a try to my SVS15!
First I tried using 950-1000 mod Bios & the score result is: P2291 & GPU temperature is around 55c.
Played with NFS Shift2, GPU temperature is 69c!

Then I tried the 975-1050 mod Bios & the score result is: P2351 & GPU temperature is 60c.
I played 1 hour of NFS Shift2, GPU temperature is 71c!
    FPS improved (ranging 40-61).
I played in an Air condition room, temperature around 25c. So far still good and I still monitors my vaio temperatures.

SC2 as in Star Craft 2 is it?
Is it really that heavy? I haven't tried the game yet though.

Lads just got my S15 3612QM 3days ago and been reading almost the whole thread, going to try the 800mhz core 900mhz mem OC first as I don't really play full on games on my laptop, if i need to do that I use my desktop.

I just have a few quick questions that I would really appreciate if someone can answer them.

First is it right that I can not install the standard nvidia drivers in my latop without a .inf mod? If so can I use the standard drivers downloaded from nvidia and simply use the modded .inf from "laptopvideo2go" ?

Will installing the non-sony signed Nvidia drivers mean some graphic card features won't work anymore like Optimus?

Last question is, does this BIOS mod change only the graphic card speed and nothing else? I am fairly sure this has been answered before and it was confirmed it was only the GPU speed but I just want to double check. Thank you in advance.

You don't have to install any specialized sony drivers. Nvidia drivers work just fine :)

The modded bios only changes clock speeds, so it is of no consequence regarding display driver installation.

I don't think so. It should be possible to achieve much higher settings even on 1080p. There is a setting that assures that the mouse (or rather input) responds in realtime.
While this is an awesome feature for a rts game, it impacts fps substantially.
I'm not sure whether this is more of a CPU related thing though.

Thank you for the reply. I though you couldn't install stock nvidia drivers on these Vaio latops, thought you had to modify the .inf file or install beta driver as the latest standard Nvidia drivers were not signed by Sony?

If I can install the latest Nvidia drivers on my new S15 without having to use some .inf mod that would be great, is that possible?

I was afraid that the .inf mod stopped Optimus from working, not sure where I heard that.

Thats awesome, if I can install the latest Nvidia drivers direct from their site without having to make any modifications to the .inf file, that will be much easier.

On a side not, I want to say a big thank you to Amal77 and Svl7 for having created these hacks, they turn the S13 and S15 into real gaming laptops and in a super compact and light package.

Sure they are not the not the fastest gaming laptops but with these mods gaming at decent levels on my laptop is a real option.

I run so many benchmarks and collected plenty of data before flashing the bios so I could run a comparison to stock and the results are great.

I flashed to the 800Mhz Core, 900Mhz Mem Bios and the now get just short of 2000 (1958) score on 3Dmark11, that's an increase of over 530 points from stock.

800Mhz OC Temps on 3Dmark are: max 60c GPU, 78c CPU, 24c Room.

I know I could get results of 2300 with the 950Mhz OC but to be honest I am not trying the push this card to the limits, I need this laptop to last me a long time and only occasionally play games on it, if I play a very demanding game I use my GTX 680 desktop.

For me it is about having the option to play most modern games at a decent level while I am away from my desktop and I think this OC mod allows that.

Amal77, to me it seems like most of the issues people are having with the OC seem to be with the high memory clocks, from my previous exp with GPU's most of the performance gains seem to come from the core OC. In this case the memory seems to have very little OC space left which tells me it was not designed for clocks much higher than the stock 900mhz, hence why even the 650M running the DDR3 is at 900mhz. The core on the other hand has plenty of room, looks like it's just a down clocked 650M for laptops with less cooling ability.

Could you maybe make a mod with a 900Mhz Core and 900Mhz Mem? That seems like a sweet spot between good performance and a decent safety buffer to me.

Once again, thanks and keep up the good work. Will you do another mod if Sony release another bios?

I hope someone can mix the SATA3 speed issues.

Try flashing it back to stock bios then do an gpu driver update.

Here is some info chart of bios I've used.

    GPU: 1000 MHz- MEM:1000MHz
    [IMG]
Although I am still in observation mode, so far still doing good in playing games such as NFS Shift2!
I've tried using the software oc but I noticed some pixel artifacts. For now I better stick to mod bios -- ok!

    I see.
The last time I tried SC2, was on my ex-Asus using 5730M.
It did play well, but not at the highest but quite a high settings.

    Thanks for the info.

    Glad to help. :)
Btw, I already did create the 900core 900mem MOD.
    Maybe you got confused. :D

    900MHz Core 900MHz Memory MOD :
    https://rapidshare.com/files/318676553/R0142C5-KeplerMod_900MHz_900MHz.zip

I'm not sure whether I'm right or not.
Last I can remember is that I have to install the Nvidia drivers with the modded inf.
Then, you will no longer have to do the modded inf when you update your nvidia drivers through the nvidia website.
I've updated my drivers to 306.23 directly from the nvidia website afterwards without any issue.

This is the driver that I used last time :
    v301.42 Windows 7/Vista 64bit | NVIDIA Mobile OEM - 30x Series GeForce Driver release - LaptopVideo2Go Forums

with much success i have been using this mod via my sony vaio S15113fx, as of now my clocks are 950/1000 with slight OC via nvidia oc tool, i was running GTA IV perfectly for a few weeks until i noticed a bit of artifacting.. well normally you just clock down and everything should be okay right? well no after i underclocked both by 25 i am now resulting in my clock dropping to stock clocks and gta now blue screens whenever i go out into the big city areas... any ideas on what might be causing this thank you

You say with a slight OC via Nvidia tools, what exactly are you calling slight?

I think people need to realise that a 175% increase to stock clock speeds is already a MASSIVE overclock on-air. That is what you are doing when you flash the 950Mhz mod. To be able to OC a part to 175% of it's stock speed without using any extra cooling is extremely rare and obviously coming close to the limit of what this part can do given the tight package it's in and limited cooling.

Can you imagine getting a i7 3Ghz CPU and overclocking it to 5.3Ghz on-air using stock cooling, that is unheard of and is basically what you are doing to the GPU with this mod.

When people get even more greedy and start to increase the clock speeds even more, as you have done. You are really starting to ask for trouble. If you are going to do that, you need to keep a very close eye on temps and to be honest in my opinion it is not worth it. If you are not happy with the massive performance increase already given by the 950Mhz OC which is giving 650M + levels of performance, then I think you need to buy another laptop like an Alienware or get a good desktop because trying to turn a Sony Vaio S into a full on gaming laptop is just not going to happen, it may work for a few weeks or maybe even a few months but if you push 1000Mhz + OC's with the standard cooling and game often, I can't see your laptop lasting very long without giving you issues.

Look at the size and cooling in an Alienware Laptop with a 650M or 660M GPU and now look at the size of your S13, you see that difference, it means the heatsink is probably half the size and the fan is much smaller. Heat will kill your laptop so please don't get greedy with the OC'ing.

Does it show an issue with other games?

Try re-install your drivers and maybe even the game, if the problem continues and you are still under warranty, flash your laptop back to stock and take it back to Sony for a replacement and if they change it over please don't get greedy on the OC a 2nd time around. I only run the 800/900Mhz OC for fear of this very problem.

As Flickster has already said, you might have damaged your GPU by overclocking it even more. Do you have any idea what the temps were? Keep in mind the monitoring software only sees the Core temp, the memory might have gotten hotter than it could handle.

So first of all, get rid of the Nvidia OC tool. Revert to stock bios and test to see if the problem still exists. Maybe run something like furmark for an hour and see what temps you are getting + if no artifacting shows up.

Only then can you try to reinstall any of the Bios mods again.

If the problems persist, you might have damaged your GPU.
That is why messing with it is at your own risk. Messing with it any further to squeeze any more out of it is just for those who absolutely know what they are doing or just for benchmarking.

Can you share with us your OC clock speed?
I doubt you will be able to OC the Core clock, since it is locked to any software OC tools.
Did you OC the memory too high?

when i artifact its almost always related to the memory. though i have had recently problems with BL2.. i will sleep the computer and when i wake it up there is red everywhere and artifacting. not the computers fault... your not supposed to put it to sleep with a game running. anyways fast traveling allows the gpu to reload everything and it works fine after that....

    Hi Guys,

So as you're probably remember Amal, I've overclock my GPU with the 950/1000 mod a fews weeks ago... I never ran any benshmark before, and I did it today...and surprisingly, I only got a score of... 1548 on 3dMark11!
And cherry on the top, right after that, I've start to get a really low fps rate on GW2 :O

Any idea of where this might coming from? I mean, I've never did any huge change on my laptop, exept the moded bios...
Is there any chance that a Windows update have made such a weird change?

Thank you in advance for your help... :'(

I just wanted to come here and say thanks for this fantastic mod! I put the 950/1000 mod onto my i5-3210m/GT640M LE 2GB S13p and managed to post a 3DMark score of 2233 with a max temp of 66C! I am super impressed with the improvement in performance, and it didn't add a lot of extra heat, a win-win in my book.

    Thanks again Amal and svl7!

thank you for the detailed response sir, i have been pushing my laptop to the extreme by having it on 1080p ultra with 975/1050 clocks, i constantly monitor my temps as i build custom desktops i needed a portable gaming machine that wouldn't break the bank, i am aware this shortens the life of my laptop but i disagree with your statement to buy the alienware at this time, as of now bf3 runs high/1080 at 30fps playable.. gta is the only game that has shown artifacting at a great level and 2 blue screens after underclocking the gpu and memory clock by 25 each it is a very peculiar problem that should not occur, but lowering the levels of clock on the gpu it should relieve stress not cause it to fail before taking the oc down via GTA the game would run stable for 1-2 hours i didn't test longer because i usually dont play for extreme long amounts of time if you truly think i should leave it alone after the 950 OC flash please advise me thank you

    Hi everybody,

I just wanted to say thank you to Amal, svl7, and others who contributed to the development of the mod. Mostly, of course, to Amal.

I have 950/1000 mod on my 13A190X with i5-3320, 2GB videocard controlled by 306.23 drivers, 12GB of RAM (8GB of that is 1.5v RAM) and a 256GB Samsung 830 SSD. With that, and after tinkering with nVidia settings, I have 2282 3dMarks in 3dMark11.

During the test, I left the laptop on the docking station, but lowered the lid so that the airflow from the exhaust vent was not obstructed. That resulted in 70-72C GPU temperatures throughout the test. I have it idling around 45-49C, not sure if it's higher than normal or not.

Again, BIG THANKS to Amal

80C to 90C or below is in general just fine, 100C is where you know there is something wrong. Note that specs may vary more per GPU, but those temps apply to most of the ones currently available in notebooks. But dont worrie about your GPU, the OC only make it 4 or 5C° hotter.

The one you should worrie about is the CPU. Mine used to goes high pretty easly (>82/85C°) under heavy load, and you don't want your CPU to go above 90C° for too long as over 80C° is already quiet high. Safe area temp is beteween 70C° and 80C°. And the more hotter the CPU get, the more hotter your GPU will be... I've limited the usage of the CPU to 95% and I've now a nice temp for both CPU and GPU. And limiting the CPU activity had made my GPU cooling down too.
Result, my CPU never goes higher than 78C° and the GPU never go higher than 75C°. Best of both world ;)

I use tech GPU z for monitoring GPU temp...
How to monitor CPU temp n limit its usage?
In btw, after hours of playing GTA4, GPU never exceeded 70 deg....
    I use 900/900 mod...

Definitely lower d settings,as GTA 4 is badly optimized for PC,even GT 650 cannot handle it at ultra.
    Plz give me d feedback..
    Thanks

    Hi MadHat,

After reading most peoples feedback on this thread to me what really seems to be the part that people need to keep their eye on is the memory clocks. The GPU is basically a 650M part so it was designed to run at 900Mhz speeds, the ram on the other hand was not designed to run at 1050Mhz speeds, it was designed for 900Mhz.

When you take into account the very tight packaging in these Sony laptops S13/S15, I think you need to keep a close eye on temps if running 1000Mhz OC's.

This is why I was most interested in the 900Mhz/900Mhz OC by Amal. For me that gives 650M speeds and is not pushing your memory past stock, I hardly think the extra few frames you will gain by increasing the memory clock by 100Mhz to 1000 is worth the potential trouble of artifacts and frying the mem chips - which I believe can't be temp monitored.

My point about buying an Alienware was about getting solid 660M levels of gaming performance with peace of mind. If you want a full on gaming laptop where you get high level gaming performance without having to worry about monitoring temps or potentially significantly reducing the life of your laptop, then that is the solution you should be looking at imo.

I still think the 900/900 MOD is the safest option that gives you 650M levels of performance. I personally don't think squeezing out an extra 100Mhz is worth the risks.

^ not sure what kind of DDR3 video RAM is in SVS13/15, but if they're the same Samsung ones as those in SA-series, they're then designed and rated for 933MHz, so you can at least overclock the memory by 33MHz and still be in the safe zone.

    Hello,

My bios seems to be different. The name is exactly the same, but the md5 check between the us bios and brasilian bios doesn't check. Is there a tutorial for me to try to edit my bios ?
Thanks for your attention and hard work !

Does anyone notice a huge battery problem on stamina mode? I've been watching some movie yesterday on my TV, pluged via HDMI, and the battery drop under 20% in about an hour!
And I'm actually working on stamina mode today, using the electical plug in, and the GT 640M LE permanently stay at ~60C°... Weird! It's looks like the stamina button doesn't make any difference and keep using the dedicated graphic card instead of the integrated one...

    Idea anyone?

It seems that some programs always use the dedicated graphics, even when it is switched off. Maybe you can make sure that whatever program you use to play back those files is set to the integrated graphics in the Nvidia settings.
