I'm thinking of upgrading to Windows 8. Do I need to reflash the stock BIOS and will the same BiOS mods in the OP work on Windows 8?

By right, no, you do not need to go back to stock BIOS, and yes, it will still work on Windows 8.
-
Also, you can flash the BIOS in Windows 8 as well, there's no need to go back to Windows 7 just to do it.

Does this BIOS mod unlock any options other than GPU? I am wanting to enable 2nd SATA Drive. I have a Sony SVS1511AGXB with InsydeH2O R0142C5 Rev 3.7

Hi everyone I've been away for a bit due to back to back tests and projects. But I opened my laptop that I got back from sony and double checked it. I was worried that they would try something to my computer since I forgot to uninstall msi after burner then blame me for it. But when I got it back I noticed the speeds were 500/900 which should be stock. I never saved any configs to my msi so that couldn't have been it. I just found out that my amex also only covers up to 1k..... and my 30 days are up since this repair took so long. So I guess my only option is to complain some more until they offer to repair. I have about 1 month left till I can claim my amex though so I'm stuck between fighting for my laptop and losing my money to try another laptop/brand. Any ideas on what I should do? btw I only paid about 1080$ for this laptop. while 80$ isnt much compared the time I lost its still a bit for me since I'm a college kid :/ Since their email was very vague I should have a decent chance to fight it? Any one know any ways that sony or other brands use to detect that I overclocked?
quick edit!
"The main problem is that the computer simply wont work. Increasing the processor speed is not magic. It could work but I couldn't too, usually it will refuse to boot and will block programs. Moreover, in case that it works the first time, it may cause problems over the time due to three electronic circuit characteristics:
1. Increased heat: By increasing the operating speed, it increases the quantity of electricity passed through the circuit, and therefore, the heat from the same, that in case of failure it can cause excessive and even permanent defects on the chip.
2. Electro-migration: This is an ambiguous concept. It is known that higher operating speeds cause a type of erosion on micro circuits. This erosion can cause defects over the time and obviously to force the processor at a higher frequency can greatly accelerate this process. However, it is clear that this process is relevant in the (short) life of a microprocessor.
3. Altered global configuration: To force the micro frequency implies in many cases to increase the frequency of other components: memory, motherboard, video card.
4. Equipment warranty: To perform overclocking to the processor or to modify its factory settings of any component results in the automatic loss of the warranty."
What do you think this means? They seem like the problem could be from "blah" but it doesnt really say that it was right?
Also the statement " It could work but I couldnt too, usually it will refuse to boot and will block programs." Do you think hes trying to say he tried but it didn't work?? -
@Jaccow ..hmm interesting, you may be right, the minimum performance at 100% could be a standard setting. Awesome temperatures you're getting
And offtopic: I'm Belgian xD

@ drofu
We have already told you what you have to say to the people at your computer shop.
Looking at all the information they have provided you, there is nothing that shows how they came to the conclusion you OC'ed the GPU.
It is not a crime to have MSI AB on your computer nor does it void your warranty, it can be used to simply monitor the GPU so they can't use that.
It's really very simple, they need solid evidence not just a hunch to legally void your warranty, least in Australia they do. You simply have to ask them to provide you solid technical evidence which demonstrates you overclocked your GPU beyond factory settings. It's that simple.
They either show you solid evidence that shows you OC'ed the GPU beyond stock or they honor your warranty, that's it.
Here in AUS we have a department called consumer affairs which we can report dodgy retailers to, I imagine you would have something similar in your country. Tell them to provide the evidence, not some vague document which goes on about what OC'ing is etc.
What program(s) were used to test/collect the information?
What software or hardware evidence was found which demonstrates the failure was caused by the user and not a faulty component?
These are the type of things they should be providing you in a report if they want to void your warranty. -
Okay thanks Flickster! I'll do that today and see what happens. I really do appreciate all the help both you and everyone has been providing me!

Hey Amal,
I watched your Dirt Showdown video. Good performance! I downclocked again from 900/1000 to 900/900 - just seems like the safer bet. I play Blacklight Retribution and basically get the same fps as before. Anyway I couldnt help but notice the sidebar on ur desktop and also the GPU monitoring from Rainmeter.
I still dont understand why your GPU does not clock at max but most other peoples does, including mine. I was thinking it might also be due to some power settings (Windows, Nvidia, Sony CC etc.) Would you mind posting your settings in detail so that I and perhaps others who are also interested in monitoring our GPU have a last chance at getting this to work
Also could you list what you use to do the reading (Openhardwaremanager etc.) I would like to give this one last shot before I give up
Thanks -
Seriously I'm not sure why though. It's working great on mine.
I'm using :
Nvidia 306.23 WHQL Drivers.
Rainmeter 2.4.0 beta r1626 64-bit.
Open Hardware Monitor 0.5.1 beta.
Power Mode on High Performance and Priority to Ventilation
Nvidia Control Panel Global settings on High Performance Nvidia processor & Prefer Maximum performance on power management mode.
No special settings for Rainmeter & Open Hardware Monitor on the Nvidia Control Panel.

Sony has posted a new BIOS under the win8 section which is now up. Just a heads up. Upgrading to this BIOS will more then likely remove all overclocking.
File Description BIOS Update Utility Release Date 9/27/2012 Version R0143C5.0907 File Size 4.85 MB This utility updates the BIOS to version R0143C5.0907.
No changes are listed -
Thanks for the update.
Will probably wait till users reported no issue on it before I start MODding it.
Not sure if the new BIOS will be stable on stock or not.
Or should I MOD it and release it sooner?
Anyone tried it yet? -
Haven't tried them yet.. Don't want to loose my overclock !!
-
If it's not too much work it would be nice if you can do it, I will most probably receive my S13 with the new bios since I ordered after win8 update... A 850/900 version (like gt650m) would be perfect
-
Was anyone able to actually download it? When I try to download it, I get the error saying "Access denied" (in some weird XML format). I am using this page: Sony eSupport - SVS13A190X - Drivers & Software
Am I doing something wrong? -
Nope, I can't download it either, along with the card reader drivers.
They need to fix the link it seems -
Yes, and the Intel SATA Driver (that makes it 3 drivers that are not downloadable)
-
Hmmm.. I've downloaded the new BIOS and flashed mine.
It seems to work as per normal, just that the flashing process took almost 1 minute.
Bad news is. Already tried MODding it to 1000MHz, and it wont change anything, as if it didn't flash the BIOS or vBIOS.
Tried going back to the old BIOS MOD. But after a restart, it still maintain on the new BIOS.
Need more time to study the issue.
For the time being, I'm on 500MHz GPU!
-
Phew... It's working again now...
Thought there was some kind of locking mechanism.
Not sure what happened.
After I revert back to the old BIOS MOD, I reflash again with the new BIOS MOD and it works!
Will post a couple of the new BIOS MOD later.
Might not be able to convert all yet, need more time for that. -
Well that's good news, but it seems that the flash process is flawed somehow. Which InsydeFlash, exe version did you use? I noticed differences when flashing with different versions before...
Will be looking for the next 900\900 version. Or better, what process do you use to edit them? EzH2O? -
Hi Amail, where is a link for the modded 1000/1000 on the latest win8 bios?
-
Their using a new version of InsydeFlash.
It took longer to Flash compared to the previous one, so BE CAREFUL and BE PATIENCE.
Btw, you can't use EzH20, last time I remember.
Need to manually decompressed everything and manually hex edit the VBIOS file.
Here goes the first batch :

AGAIN, PLEASE BE PATIENCE AND WAIT UNTIL IT FINISHES FLASHING, COZ THIS TIME IT TAKES LONGER THAN BEFORE.
Please do update me of anything.
Thanks. -
900/900 BIOS working fine here.
I think it's just an update in the MEI for Windows 8 support, nothing else worth mentioning.
Still it'd be nice to have some patch notes. -
I upgraded to Windows 8 and the latest WHQL (306.97) and I'm still on the old 800/900 flash. I've been seeing some performance gains (Sleeping Dogs: 24 fps -> 26 fps) with solid temperatures (cpu: 71°). In Europe, Vaio Update does not mention the new flash yet. Is there any reason to upgrade to R0143C5?
-
Not really, at least until they release patch notes we can only guess what the new version is about. My best guess is an update to improve Windows 8 compatibility.
-
Great work, again thank you for what you do to make our laptops even more awesome !!
-
my insyde flash has gone not responding twice with the 900/900
third times the charm. went not responding then i flipped to speed... 10 sec. later it came alive and started -
Yeah, they should at least mention something about the BIOS.
Thanks for the update!
Changes still unknown.
Glad to help.
Hmmmm... really weird.. Good thing it worked the third time...
Thanks for the update! -
Hi guys im new to this thread. I am looking to buy Sony's S Series windows 8 model that are now for sale. Do you know if this laptop will be compatible with your bios modS?.....It looks identical to the Sony S Series 13P model from 2012....even running a Nvidia 640m LE graphic card.
Model Info:
VAIO S13A Series SVS13A290S Performance -
2206 3dmark score
sony svs 14115fbb
1000/1000
thanks a lot for this bios. Nice Job!! -
I upgraded to Windows 8 with my SVS13A190S and the BIOS mod works fine. I don't think the 290S is different other than having Windows 8.
BTW I don't think the "enhanced" is worth the extra money - it just gives you a different HDD and a bit more RAM, both of which you can replace yourself for a lot less money. -
I totally agree, however i am from canada and there isnt discounted 2012 models. I want the gunmetal colour, and the 2gb of vram. So unfourtunatley this is my only option. US sony wont take cards with canadian addresses too.
-
Ok so as ive been reading people say this mod is stable and can get you to gtx 660m speeds. Im just looking for 650m speeds. What im curious of is....
Does increasing the base clock mean there will now be a new max clock or are base clock and max clock the same and consistent with this mod?
When just browsing the web will my graphics still be running at these crazy highs?
What are the dangers of using this mod?
Does it kill battery life?
Would i be able to run World of warcraft on Ultra?
hope someone can help me out, looking between this and gigabyte u2442 but i cant find any info on OCing the 640m on the gigabyte so looking here now -
The new (Win8) S15(12) is defintely different than the SVS1511 in terms of hardware. I would be also very interrested if there is or will be a bios mod for the new version of the notebook. Would be great to get some info!
Thank you very much!
@ hayden14
Base clock is the same so you will not have any drawbacks in terms of battery life if the machine is in idle (nV GPU) or even using the Intel GPU. -
If so, what are the differences? From pictures and spec sheets I can't see any.
-
Other CPU, other storage options (dual SSD)...I think thats it: Sony VAIO 15.5" Blu-ray Laptop | VAIO S Series 15 Laptop | SVS1512GPXB | Sony USA
-
I'm Canadian too (hence the username
)
I think this is what you're looking for:
http://store.sony.ca/webapp/wcs/sto...52921666493259&categoryId=8198552921644886498
The CPU is just a refresh with a slight bump in clock speed. That's a change on Intel's part, not so much Sony's. And it always had dual SSD (custom drives to fit in the standard 2.5" enclosure). -
It looks the same to me, the CPU refresh was probably introduced in this new BIOS (which I forgot to mention, so the new BIOS is probably W8 compatibility by MEI update (doesn't mean W8 didn't work before) + CPU list update), and the dual SSD is probably the same one as the June models with the proprietary connector.
There's no evidence there's been a change in any component, but I hope somebody with the new model in hand would confirm it. -
I did not say anything else ;-)
Could be 100% the same mainboard and bios but that is only an assumption, nothing else so far. Would be really great if somebody could confirm or revise that. -
Ya i would love to know the 290s is compatible before i buy. hopefully someone could confirm.
-
Is anyone getting artifacting in League of Legends? All the BIOSmods I've tried give me artifacts in LoL, but no other games.
-
On stock BIOS?
-
I play LOL on the 1000/1000 BIOS with no artifacting at all.
Sent from my SGH-I747 -
@Amal. How's the last few months with your S13P?
-
Still doing great I guess.
Just bought NFS Most Wanted 2012, and it plays well.
Also feels like new, now with Windows 8.
Hoping it stays that way for as long as it can.
-
That's good to hear Amal. I'm thinking about grabbing the Newer SVS13A290X Premium that comes preinstalled with Windows 8. Not sure if the bios mod would work on this but I guess we'll find out soon.
Anyway have you or anyone with the S13 or S15 2012 version tried using the hdmi port on an external monitor that is 3d to watch 3d videos or movies? I'm not talking about gaming in 3d but viewing videos or watching movies. -
Yeah, hopefully it stays like that.
My Battery is still at 0.0% wear, which is good for a 4+ month old laptop, I guess.
As for your model, I really can't be sure whether it'll work.
You need the BIOS file for that model first, so that you can check their MD5 checksum, to see if it is identical.
Nope, don't have a 3D monitor.
