Hi all. i bought a sony vaio svs13118g a month ago and applied this biosmod to it. but i have a problem when using the biosmod. everytime i quit a heavy graphics game the laptop freezes. i reinstalled a clean windows 7 ultimate 64bit with all the latest drivers. I can use 1000mhz mod and play hours without overheating or lockups, but as soon as i quit back to windows the laptop freezes. its like its freezing due to sudden GPU clock changes. CPU and GPU temps are below 80 degrees C. Is there anything i could try? i tried everything already and cannot find a solution. if i return the bios to stock then its 100% working. if i try any of the biosmods even the slowest one it freezes when exiting games. thank you all :)

Hi guys. So I tried the method outlined HypermagiK on my new Windows 8 S15 and I got the following error when trying to flash the modded bios:

Error: IHISI 15h fail. Internal Error 25t FFD00000
    FBTS: Write bios fail.

To be fair, I tried flashing an unmodded bios (BACKUP.ROM) and it resulted in a very similar error.

Any idea what the issue might be?

I have the same error. My Bios version is R0081C8.
    @HypermagiK
What is your bios version. Have you forgot one step in your tutorial?

I'm also running version R0081C8. From the flash.it executable, I see that error 25 is 'write bios fail', which could mean that the BIOS region is write-protected. Are you guys using the flash.it.exe from the archive linked in my post? Also, do you have secure boot enabled?

I used the exe from the file that is linked in your post. Maybe you can upload/provide your flash.it.exe.

Edit: With flash.it.exe 2.0b i get the same error, but three times.

Thanks for putting all this together! I've been using a few different BIOSs from this and everything is working great, but I do have a question: What is the difference, theoretical or applied/real, between R0143C5 and R0142C5? What differences have we seen in terms of performance and potential bug fixes? Is there a real reason to use one over the other and why?

I'm using the exe from the attached archive, which is version 1.5f. I'm not sure why you can't flash, I just did it again a few times and I couldn't reproduce the error.

Still a no go, although I'm able to get original BIOS images working. It seems that sometimes the original BIOSes don't flash either. I'm not sure why though. It could either be after a certain amount of time, or after changes to the CMOS settings etc. etc. But a fresh /G ROM file will definitely flash, and it'll keep working after a few resets. Eventually though, it stops working. I'm not entirely sure why.

Everyone hates it when some new guy comes and asks a question randomly, but I'm lost, and this thread seems to be very helpful for a lot of people!

A couple of weeks ago I flashed my bios, and got a super nice upgrade to my GPU. Everything has gone smoothly, but today, when doing the 3Dmark11 test again, I noticed that the CPU core clock stays at 1197 no matter what I do! I think I've tried all the different power settings, including, of course, the all powerful changing of ventilation strength on the Vaio Control panel (which changed the core clock before, but not any longer).

    What can have happened?

Anyone getting high cpu temps but avg gpu temps? Took apart the laptop and reapplied arctic 5 thermal paste to the gpu and cpu dies but it hasn't made a significant difference (maybe ~5C drop). I think the fan is simply too weak (where is the intake?).

I don't think anyone has noted the advantages of R0143C5 yet - here is what I have noticed so far:

    - No change in idle kernel/interrupt cpu usage (contrary to some reports)
    - No wifi glitches (loses all connectivity at random (still sees wifi networks) and configuration-related windows freeze requiring reboot)
    - Can plug in and out a USB audio device without putting the kernel into a deadlock of some sort (basically it gets stuck using 1 core but the system remains mostly responsive, just can't shut down) requiring a hard reboot
    - Can enable/disable usb audio devices at driver level without windows throwing a tantrum
    - Can resume from sleep having left OpenVPN open and have it reconnect flawlessly, previously did same thing to kernel (stuck using 1 core), however was fixable by restarting openvpn.

I am running Windows 8 - the wifi glitches appeared in 8 IIRC, but the usb audio bugs and openvpn bug existed in 7 too

tl;dr a simple bios update which I was avoiding because others reported increased idle cpu has fixed literally all my issues with the laptop! :)

Edit: Another to add to the list:

    - Nvidia GPU is properly disabled when idle like it was in Windows 7 (it is no longer visible to HWiNFO64 at all when idle, same as 7, as opposed to visible but at a very low clock speed)

This bios update needs to be recommended more!

Would it be a lot of work to make a R0143C5 950mhz core and 1000mhz memory BIOS?

The gpu just isn't cut out for 1000mhz core, no stability/heat issues or anything, but it's throwing the input lag and frame timing spikes typical of a subtly unhappy gpu and I don't trust it to work long-term like this

So i got R0142C5 and have the 850/1000 clock.
And im thinking of going R0143C5. Cos if i understood it right this BIOS is still modable right?
And if so. Do i need to go back to normal R0142C5 bios and upgrade it to R0143C5 and then apply the bios mod? Or can i just directly run a R0143C5 bios mod and all is fine and dandy?

    Worked great thanks.
How ever i have an issue in Windows 8 (win 7 model Vaio 15s). In windows 7 i had an issue where the graphics card wouldn't down clock it self in stamina mode always and get stuck on max clock.
I still have this issue. Even after the upgrade to R0143C5 bios 900/900. The really strange thing is that if i open the Chrome browser it down clocks it self to 135/405. But as soon as i shut chrome of it clocks it self up again to max. Im not sure why this is happening. But it has happened on 2 different drivers 306 and the latest 310 nvidia driver.

Anyone else have this issue? Or is it just me?

Is it possible to allow Undervolting via a BIOS tweak? And could I possibly request a 950/950 version of the R0143C5 BIOS?

Keep up the good work amal, you're a lifesaver (and a Sony promoter - I bought this laptop because of you haha, hope youre on commission! :D)

So it looks like flash.it is not actually writing anything unless the data being written is different than what's already on the chip and this is why flashing a freshly backed up image works but flashing a modified image fails as there is no write access.
I've found that the Acer AO756 laptop has a similar InsydeH2O UEFI firmware. Acer has two types of BIOSes available for this laptop, one that features secure flash and the other that doesn't. If you go to Acer's driver page ( Download) and search for AO756, you'll find a couple of BIOSes but the most interesting ones are 1.05 and 1.06. These two archives contain two different versions of flash.it. The one in the 1.06 archive detects that the installed BIOS features secure flash and will only accept images like the ones provided by Sony in their Windows updater, which have some sort of UEFI flasher module built-in.
On the other hand, the flash.it from the 1.05 archive doesn't know about secure flash, accepts images that are backed up using the /G argument and tries to write the image directly just like the one I've attached in a previous post.
Since by default, the BIOS region is write-protected, Acer provides an additional executable file named sprom.exe which tells the EC to pull the HDA_SDO pin high. This is the Flash Descriptor Security Override signal and it disables the security measures defined in the flash descriptor, basically allowing full access to the entire ROM.
It may be possible that Sony has also wired the HDA_SDO pin to the EC and the same mechanism can be used on this laptop, but the ECs are different and the executable provided by Acer cannot be used. The EC used by Sony in their Win8 S models is SMSC MEC1609. Unfortunately, I was unable to find the datasheet for this particular chip. If we could find which EC registers control the GPIO pins, we may be able to try and pull the pins high and see what happens.

Its been up for about five million times in this thread so far. (I understand that your new but its really not to much to ask to read first post and read the last 3-5 pages of the thread to see what the status is)
At this moment there is no way to bios mod the windows 8 laptops.
Its not a question of "i just haven´t gotten around to it yet. But i will when i have time/feel like it". Its that it is more or less impossible to actually do it. (read probably not impossible but there is no solution to it And its hard to find one, if there even is one.)

So really stop spamming about it (you and all others.) Its been up plenty of times and there are people working on it. And if they find a solution it will be posted here, as soon asap.
Asking about it every 5 posts in this thread wont make it magically appear. Only make people irritated.

Hello guys! I'm posting here not for the modded bios but actually to got hold of the original BIOS file for my laptop. Let me explain the problem quickly: I bought my laptop in holland, upgraded the RAM, SSD and put the original HDD into the ODD drive. I'm now getting a constant 15-20% cpu usage in speed mode, 10% in stamina mode. I've read more reports about this problem and the solutions are to downgrade the bios to the previous version. Here comes the real problem: my model (SVS15113C5E) hasn't got another bios than the one running on it right now. I'm running R0081C8 and am looking for R0080C8. I can't download it on the dutch, UK or EU site. Also can't find it on the US site...

Does someone here got the original R0080C8 BIOS file? I'm running a w8 laptop by the way. Just to be sure!

Indeed, mine also has MEC1621, though the latest BIOS update from Sony contains the following string: MEC1609F 0.06.01 10/21/08 9000.
Can you please post (or PM) a link to the service manual?

    Edit:
Found the SVS151 service manual ver. 4-2012K on Sony's site but this is only for SVS1511 models.

I'm having the exact same problem, also bought the SVS15113C5E shipped with Windows 8 and R0081C8 bios. Replaced the ODD for an HDD and the 15-20% cpu usage problem occurred.

From what I've read in the 2012 Vaio S owners lounge this problem also occurs for some people with the windows 7 version of the S15/13 with bios R0143C5. Reverting back to R0142C5 fixed the problem.

Now the catch is that for people who have the windows 8 version can't revert back to R0142C5 because it's not compatible (at least from what i've read in this topic)

Already emailed with Sony Support about this, but no response yet :(
If someone could point us to R0080C8, than we can check if this fixes the problem (I have my doubts but until we try we can't know for sure ;) )

Good to hear there are more people with these problems. At least it is not only me :) I read that the R0080C8 bios is NOT released to the public, but only shipped on newly made laptops back in october. Also saw someone with the R0080C8 bios who also had the problem. Looks like sony needs to release a new bios because it's impossible to hack this one. I have also tried updating all drivers from the intel site directly (chipset, SATA etc.). No luck though... problem still persists. Let us know what Sony has to say, I will joining you to spam them soon!

I'm afraid that Sony is going to say that the laptop is not supported for fitting a hard drive into the ODD slot to get away without having to fix it...
Let's hope that's not the case!

Try 989092701, I think it's for the SVS1512 models, as the date of the first version of the document is 2012.09.21. AFAIK this service manual is not different from the SVS1511 one though...

I just learned about the Windows 8 issue but for clarification, the Bios Mod doesn't work for the new Windows 8 model sold by Sony right, but it does for the Windows 7 models upgraded to Windows 8 correct?
