Thanks for testing!
-
Haven't checked this thread for quite sometime and im glad there's progress for win8 systems!
-
Hi all,
thank you guys for your great effort! But recently I found out that the latest GeForce driver (314.07) does not allow to increse either GPU clock or VRAM clock. So it repains the same as stock 500/500MHz.
Does enybody know what is the latest GeForce driver which allows to speed up GT 640M LE video card? -
That´s strange. Are you sure its the driver that is the issue?
Im going to try my self with the driver and see what happens. -
Seems to be the driver. When I upgraded to 314.07, it also pushed my clocks back down to stock.
-
310.97 still clocks. I don't know why the new drivers dont work at all
-
I've oc the card after installed the drivers and it's work. I have a big issue, i've tried to 3dmark but my score is a little bit over 1500! I've read that maybe i have to downclock the i7 to 95% of power but i don't know how to do this, some ideas? However thanks guys to make the dreams of play games realty in this computer
EDIT: I've made some testes with 3dmark and Gpu-z. I've seen that the gpu clock is always between 500-570 max while i'm testing... but in the graphic card page the gpu clock and the memory clock is 1000. Some ideas? Maybe with the new nvidia drivers the boost doesn't work? -
Hi guys! I've made some testes! I've uninstalled the last nvidia drivers and i've install the 310.9 version! I've made 3dmark and this is my score
https://www.dropbox.com/s/yz7huxxbt92s6kd/GT640le OC.jpg
Is it normal that the memory frequency is always 500 Hz max? I've used 1000/1000 bios. -
That took some balls!
-
Ahahahahahahah i'm stupid!
However unistalling the new nvidia drivers and intalling the old working version the oc work. I've an issue with memory clock someone can help?
-
Nothing wrong with the memory clock. GPU-Z bug.
-
-
Does OC on 640Le work on windows 8??
-
I'm running 313.96. Should I downgrade to another driver version?
-
310.* is the last that works with this

Thanks DarkImortal. downloading 310.90. I'm assuming that one is alright?
I noticed that you play Tera. Any tips-n-tricks to boost performance for it? -
Nothing besides ingame config really - get around 30-40 fps in general though drops to 5-10 in dungeons while in combat
Will post it later if I remember, the gist of it is everything around half and lighting (or whatever the setting is that enables cheap AA) and character to max. -
So rolled a new char on Tera and now get about 3 fps on newb island with about half everything. Your advice to downgrade to 310.x drivers did work though. Afterburner and 3dMarks confirm that.
Any advice DarkImmortal? -
ok, well terra.exe wasn't using nvidia so that was a big problem
Still probably only averaging about 25 fps or so, but at least it's playable. Thanks for your help DarkImortal

Faceless Rebel Notebook Consultant
Nvidia Optimus has some kind of bug, every time I install a driver I have to force Clean Install or it decides to set the Tera profile to Integrated Graphics only which obviously is bad.
-
Thanks dear!
I hope there are new versions of bios that will work with new nvidia drivers.
-
Yeah, when I downgraded the driver I just went ahead and did a clean install. I double-checked to make sure it wasn't using integrated by choosing integrated for terra-launcher and terra.exe. Then I was only getting 5 fps, so it's definitely using the nvidia. I guess I'll try tweaking some more stuff, because it seems like I should be getting a bit more fps than I am...probably averaging 25 fps.
-
Yes you need to use nvidia inspector to fix this (google for how)
-
So just to confirm; I'm about to buy one of the S15s with Windows 8 (cannot source a Windows 7 one in my country).
Catagorically, does the 640m mod work or not with Windows 8? I tried ot keep up with the thread but I got lost along the way.
Cheers

AFAIK the bios flash is not yet working on the Windows 8 models as they require a signed bios. It is being worked on though.

The latest over at tech inferno is that this bios is locked down and a flash mid will be very difficult. :-(
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2 -
Crap.
It's nigh on impossible to find a Windows 7 one around anymore
even the ones on ebay are all "wahey we upgraded it to Windows 8 for you!!"
Cheers

It's not w8 that blocks it, but the secure efi bios. An updated svs131 or svs13a1 will take the mod regardless of w8. Just not svs132 or svs13a2.

Oh right!
In that case I'll change my search.
Cheers!

-edit- Does this look like an upgraded one?

I have an S15 series running on Windows 8. I flashed my bios with the mod and it works great. There's a weird issue I'm getting tho. When I run 3D Mark, it shows that my memory clock is 1000Mhz but my cpu clock is only 405Mhz.
When I run GPU-Z, the first screen (Graphics Card Tab) shows that My GPU Clock is 1000Mhz, Memory 1000Mhz and Boost 1000Mhz but on the Sensors Tab, it shows onnly 500Mhz for Memory Clock but the GPU Core Clock as 999.8Mhz.
I tried upgrading my Drivers but it actually brings the GPU Core clock to 570Mhz so I downgraded my driver to the stock driver for Windows 8.
Any ideas on the oddities that's happening on my laptop? I've tried flashing with different bios mods and the results are almost the same on gpu-z and 3dmark.
Let me know what you guys think..
Oh thank yo for the great work on the bios mod! Its so awesome! -
I just placed an order for one of the "pre-update" ones after reading about the issues with flashing the BIOS in order to overclock the 640M LE on the new Vaios shipping with Windows 8. Could someone confirm if I'd be able to overclock the GPU on this machine using the modified one of the modded BIOS?

Yes, you're good to go. It's the SVS13A 2xxx that has the different BIOS.
-
Did you do that on the new S15 shipped with Windows8 installed? Or is it just the Win 7 one that has been upgraded to Win 8?
If it's the first case, could you share about how you did it? Thanks -
So, what did you guys get on the new 3DMark test?
Link : NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M LE video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3520M,Sony Corporation VAIO
Running on 99% CPU, 1000MHZ Core, 1120MHz Memory. 310.90 drivers. -
I'm happy to do bios mod testing for win 8 models I have svs13a26pg.
-
May i ask you why and how did you deescalate your CPU power?
Thanks a lot
I have the same hardware of yours and i would know if i need to do the same on my laptop. I have to say thanks to you for share your knowledge.
-
Due to my country climate. The temperature here in Malaysia can get quite hot.
By turning it down to 99% instead of 100%, the temperature got reduced significantly(especially using the i7-3520M). Thus eliminating any possibility of throttling due to high temp on the GPU.
Our GPU usually will throttle down when it reaches around 85c to 87c.
Hope that answer your question.
-
Got it! Thanks! During summer also here is very hot (30-40 C°) so i will turn it down. I've seen that you used a particular bios where the memory Frq is 1120 MHz. Is it stable?
-
That doesn't say much
What can be stable for him, doesn't necessary means it's stable for you. These tweaks to the limits depends on how well your GPU is made... -
And how well it is cooled. How difficult is it to replace the thermal compound on these machines?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2 -
I suspect it is easier to relocate to the South/North Pole.
The lower the ambient temperature, the better the cooling
But I better stop... it's getting off-topic now
-
So a SVS13127PXB would be flashable even though it shipped with Win8?
Any other reference I should check (maybe in BIOS) before trying to flash?
Thanks -
I'm using the same 1000/1000 BIOS.
OCed the memory using MSI Afterburner, just for benchmarking purpose.
It does run quite stable, but just barely. At 1150MHz, then it starts showing artifact.
Usually gaming on the stock 1000/1000. Should be good enough for my needs.
-
No, I don't think you can flash it with the BIOS MOD.
Looking at the drivers page, the SVS13127PXB shows that it is using the new Windows 8 Vaio S model BIOS. -
? I've replaced thermal compound on laptops before with no problems. What makes these machines so difficult? It's even recommended in the original bios mod thread at techinferno.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2 -
Simply stated there is no bios mod for part numbers that have that 2 in the 7th spot... Svs1312, 13a2, 1512, 15a2. Though Svl7 will continue to try, he says the new bios is totally locked down so it will be very difficult to do.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2 -
He probably got confused when you mentioned :
Coz his is SVS13127PXB -
Oops. My bad on the earlier post. Sorry.
-
Any word on performance with latest Nvidia drivers (newest 2 versions)? Are they still choppy? If so, have you any ideas why and how they can be fixed? Thanks.
