Yep, but i read in a forum that graphic-cards throttle down at a temp of approximately 95°C.
I dont want that my card throttles down :D Otherwise it makes no sense that i have overclocked it with the bios mod.

Can I count on a bios mod for the models with a 2 in the seventh digit (The windows 8 models) in the future? The faster GPU is a really big deciding factor for me in buying the S13. :(

unlock windows 8 bios in not impossbile as say the creator of windows 7 bios mod, he can't make a bios mod for win 8 beacause he only need a vaio SVS1512 or SVS1513 for test.

in some lenovo and acer whit win 8 there is a windows 8 bios mod.

(as always sorry for my english)

It's definitely possible. SVL7 over at TechInferno has put together a hacked bios for the m14x R2 (with secure boot). It's just a matter of effort and skill. I didn't end up going with the Sony S13 and picked up an Alienware. It's good enough, a little more powerful but quite a bit thicker.

Just picked up the last Windows 7 model sony had in stock in my area. Which one of these files from the first post should I download? I have verified that my bios is the same as the one used in the first post. It's R0142C5.

Any of the three by SVL7 depending on how much you want to overclock yours by.

Is there any chance that the new models (with windows 8) get bios mod? I wanna buy one for me but only if I can do this, thanks.

There's a chance but it's small. Don't buy if you're counting on this or buy a refurbished that can be flashed.

I wish I could buy a refurbished one, but they do not exist in Brasil. I think I don't gonna buy anymore anyway, if it's small, I can't count on it. Thanks.

Well, if you've waited this long, maybe you can wait a few months more till the Haswell arrives - if there's an S-series refresh, it will definitely have a better screen (because this garbage they use seems to be discontinued) and the integrated graphics performance should be faster than the 640M. Although, with the Windows 8, it might also be a glossy touch screen.. Hopefully, they'll offer different options for those who don't need a touchscreen on their laptops and prefer matt screens instead.

I only got my S13A now (bought it four months ago, but it was stuck at my friend's in a different country who delayed his trips back).. If I knew it would be this delayed, I'd have just skip the purchase and wait for the Haswell refresh myself.. The screen is bad enough that I've joined the bandwagon and ordered an IPS replacement screen so I'll have to cut up the bezel and all to install it. I'm not happy about it, but I can't stand looking at this thing when even my old glossy Acer 11,6" 1810TZ screen is MUCH nicer to look at.

This is a very good point. The stock screen is terrible. The lower resolution (720p) 14" screen on my Asus G46VW is even better. If you can wait until June /July you should have a much better SVS.

Well I'm waiting since september/2012. It's very hard in Brasil. If you have one compact laptop, you don't get all the performance. If you got the performance, you have a monstrous thing. The only way to stay in the middle was with Chronos (but only the i5 2450M + HD6750M model, unfortunately) and now with this Vaio, but again we are losing GPU, I just don't know what to do. My old laptop, is so much big, is one HP 1240BR, it has a Turion 64 X2. At the end I think I'm going to wait till july, damn.
Although it will be more 3~4 months of punishment. Thanks.

It's not too different here. I sent back the SVS13 because of the poor screen and bought the Asus G46VW. It's much larger (still only a 14") but very fast for games (660m). Definitely a compromise. By Fall there should be ultrabooks that are as fast or faster for gaming...well, I hope there are!

Just confirm something for me. Is it impossible to modify core clock speeds with afterburner ? If no there is another program that can do it? Even if I could not change voltages, it would be very useful for me. All of that to windows 8 models of course. Thanks.

The clocks are locked at a much lower level than afterburner and similar software can change. You can, however, change the memory clocks.

I don't understand. Afterburner can't change clocks because they are too much low ? Can't change even a little, let's say to use 570Mhz, maybe 650Mhz ?

Afterburner and the like have access to the maximum boost setting which is capped quite low (I don't remember exactly how low but certainly under 600).

Actually afterburner and friends can't change the clocks at all although the interface is capped at 675. Dragging things around won't affect the actual clocks though so don't get your hopes up about a mild overclock.

Is there a way to get core clocks back to 310.90 levels? Any driver from NVIDIA above this version caps core clocks (memory is unaffected)

Lol. Someone needs to put a sticky somewhere since this question gets asked every six posts a though the posters can't scroll back and read. :)

Go to techinferno forums where svl7 is the person to look for. As of two days ago best solution is a possible hardware replacement of the bios chip to one that has the signed lock removed. It doesn't exist yet.

Should I first upgrade to Windows 8, update everything (drivers etc.) and then try the Bios Mod, or should I mod the Bios first, then upgrade to 8 and update.

I recently got the windows 7 S15 model, after almost a 5 years with MacOS, so i'm still re-learning everything.

When i upgraded mine to Win 8 it seemed to have replaced the BIOS mod (clocks were back down to 500) so I had to re-install it.

I've tried it as I wanted the fps improvements for Bioshock Infinite. Unfortunately it seems as though my core clock will no longer go above 570mhz. I've not been in this thread for about 6 months, is this a known issue with recent official releases? Is there any way around it or do I have to roll back to an earlier version? If so which one?

    Thanks

Edit: reading back several pages it appears this is known and 310.9 is the last compatible driver. Would still be interested if anyone finds a work around. The new 314 driver supposedly gives a 40% boost to Bioshock Inifnte. So 40% overclock vs alleged 40% boost for one game. Tough call!

Why is that a tough call? 40% better performance on one game vs. 40% better performance on all games? :p

    Hi guys,

I have a SVS131290X notebook and downgraded it from Win 8 to Win 7.
The PC also has the BIOS version R0081C8 and not the same as Amel77 mentioned in the very first post (R0142C5).
Will it also work with this version?
Unfortunately there is no BIOS update for my Vaio version but I really want to have more power with the GPU

And I cant find a way to wirte a PM to Amal77, where is the freakin PM button in the profile???

    Thank you guys

Again the answer is NO. The BIOS mod will not work on any model that came with Windows 8 installed. If your BIOS number does not match, it will not work. End of story.

Hi, Recently my Core Clock goes down to 213, or MIN Core clock, all at sudden while playing games, all games... Even 3DMark benchmarking.
    I was on 935 mod, and tried another mod, 800, no luck. Went to even Stock bios, it still happens, going down to 125 clock... ㅡㅡ;;
Voltage stays on 0.9250v and Memory Clock stays on 900Mhz, or whatever it is.
It stays on Max clock when I start up the game and on game Menu. But after I start to play a game after Menu, it goes down after like 5 seconds.
I have dual monitor and I put MSI AB and GPU-Z on the right and game on the left.
When it happens, On MSI AB, I see clock went down, but on GPU-Z it keep saying Core clock on 900mhz, when it actually went down... Really wierd....

I did not change anything,... It just started to happen.
I tried even reinstalling Windows 8, still happnes.....
Do not know why, temperature stays cool enough, around 79 to 83. Nvidia Driver is on 310.90, Nvidia settings on High performrieance....
I even tried install the latest 314.22 driver, and still going down to Lowest Core Clock..... OTL

Update: Hey, I got it to work by restoring to factory image by Recovery Disk....!!!

Try changing the laptop power plan to High Performance? Or perhaps upgrade your graphics card driver to 310.90...

NOTE: Do not upgrade to the latest driver i.e. 314.xx as it is known to cap the core clock to the default level.

I tried updating the driver to 310.90 and changing the power option to High Performance, and didnt help....T.T
    I really cant see why this is happening..... It seems like it is not a hardware problem, and whatever I do with Software it does not help.... ㅡㅡ;;;

Update: Hey, I got it to work by restoring to factory image by Recovery Disk....!

Hello guys, any news on the working state of bios mod with last Windows Nvidia drivers?
And do you know if it works with Linux Nvidia Drivers, in particular latest version (313.26)?

With and after Driver version of 314.xx will drop your core clock to default clock.... Your best bet is to stay on 310.90.
It should work on Linux NVIDIA Drivers but I would not install the latest version of driver but little bit older as newest driver for windows is clocking it down.

Well, yeah, i knew that last Window Drivers does not work correctly... but i would like to know EXACTLY if the mod works with latest Linux drivers, because they give a drammatical performance increase compared to previous versions, and these will improve more and more in future, so using old versions is not a option. Thanks again.

How exactly did you manage to install the nvidia linux drivers? I've got a dual boot with win 8 and Ubuntu, and it doesn't even detect the nvidia gpu in my case. Also, were you able to disable the keyboard backlight in linux? (or perhaps keep it always on)

Well, I have not still got this notebook, I have done this question because I'm thinking if buy it or another laptop, lol. However you should be able to install Nvidia driver from Ubuntu repositories with "sudo apt-get install nvidia-313-updates". I don't know how optimus works Optimus thought (search Bumblebee on Google).

    Hi at all s tuner,

i´m german and i can´t follow all 165 sites in the mod forum. it´s so many brain work for me to translate it.
    i have 4 questions...but first, my laptop is a svs13a1z9.g4 with the gt640m le 2gb, 12 gb ram and an i7 3520m

    1. is it right? the bios-mod raise the gpu clock in speed-modus at any time. is the stamina modus activ, runs the hd 4000 graphic and the gt640 throttle down at 135mhz. or not?
    2. here are so many mods...what is the most stable in all conditions, autocad, office and of course games like skyrim? not the fastest! 20 - 50 % more power are enough :)
    3. if i change the boost modus i get more cpu power but the gpd clock is the same from the bios-mod?
    4. which nvidea driver should i use?

sorry for the english...my russian is better ;) haha ...please reply

    Guten tag :p

The BIOS mod increases the maximum clock in Speed mode. It can still throttle down to 135 even in speed mode - it will not stay at 100% speed all the time.

On Stamina mode, the GT640 is not active at all.

I would not recommend going over 900 MHz. I use the 850 and it works perfectly.

I'm not sure what you mean here - the CPU's Turbo Boost feature? That happens automatically, you can't control it.
