    Windows 8 Pro 64 Bit
    Official Sony BIOS R1021C8
    nvidiainspector 1.9.7.1
official nvidia (beta- used to be anyways) driver 320.18 WHQL

I believe the people who are having issues need to either downgrade or update their drivers it seems to be working for everyone just about

I'm happy its getting put to good use, Windows 8 S Owners like myself have been dying for this:thumbsup:

That was it... driver version - thanks!
Temps with Priority to Ventilation are in low 60ies max. (both CPU and GPU) with SC2 with maxed out (except Shaders) during In Utter Darkness campaign.

Strangely, I see no perf. improvement on that mission. I could only play it with Shaders on High )not Ultra) and still so :)

No FPS improvement? What OC did you apply, 1050/1150 MHz surely would help, D3 went from 30 FPS to 60 FPS for me 1920x1080 AA+ Everything maxed out

Check in game for FPS Limiter restrictions sliders foreground and background, also I know you probably did this already but make sure in nvidia control panel sc2 is set up to use HighPerformace nvidia gpu ;)

SC2 is set for sure, since IUD mission cannot even handle 720p with Low settings on HD4000 :D And I was playing FullHD, Extreme settings.

FPS is extremely low when the Cloaking part comes in, I didn't check that time but I can tell it's under 15FPS. (With Shaders set on High, not Ultra, everything is smooth, no FPS drop, but with Shaders on Ultra, FPS drops too much)
Note that this is an extremely intensive mission! Regular Multuplayer or other missions, or even IUD before cloaking part works just fine maxed out.

I used 1000/1000 OC. It performs like 500/900 did as far as I can notice on the cloaking part (that's all I tested really, I didn't restart the mission to check anything, since it is smooth until that point).

Just to be clear - 1000/1000 is a 100%/10% OC right? (double GPU clock from default, 10% memory OC)

    Sounds intense.
I get an FPS increase in Crysis 3 but it's not going to run 100+ FPS on 1920x1080 on Ultra like some water cooled desktop

    Yes it is a 100%/10%
    Try 1000/1150 MHz

    Using 310.90 with 1000/1000 BIOS.

Can't seem to hit 2400 points with 1050/1150. Actually, my core clock stays at 1000. I guess the BIOS locks it?

Thanks for the new method, works perfect. I m using 320.20 :)
When the Nvidia Inspector is not running, the card runs on 135/405? Because when I set to default with NvidiaInspector open, it will not throttle down. Only after restart NVI.

For me, NVI has to run during games, otherwise he will clock down to 500/900 and the monitor will be black.

How can you get 8 Watts? :D

Kudos to Myst3ri0n for the new trick. Worked flawless after switching to a default BIOS.

I have Win7 machine and Amal's BIOS tweak (975/1100) gave me about 2300 points on 3Dmark before. Not sure if NVidia added tweaks in the new driver but after updating it my score has increased by ~200 points, see here. It seems that 975 MHz is unfortunately maximum for my chip. Crashes instantly at 1000 or more. Memory can do more but at 1200 too many artifacts, 1150 went OK.

Will need to measure the wattage, also another interesting finding ^_^ - though I don't think it will reach that number cuz the HDD that I switched eats more than the default optical drive.

Using battery bar. I was able to see my wattage usage drop to 8.x watts. When I got the down clock shortcut to work. Lowest I've ever seen. But hard to reproduce.

So the software overclock ist working, thanx for that great work ,but im wondering, if i sett my gpu clocks back to defoult, msi afterbouner shows me that de Gpu is running all the time with 500/900. If i just open nvidia inspector, the clocks drop down to 135/405. In idle my clocks are 500/900, shouldnt they drop down automaticaly ?

I guess it doesn't downclock as you're forcing the card to run in P0 (maximum) state with the given clocks. To have it downclock automatically, you would need to modify the vBIOS clock values for the P0 state which has not been solved for the UEFI ones.

Hey guys Im trying this exactly how you said to and im getting this error....

**The name 'C\Users\J\Desktop\nvidiaInspector\nvidiaInspector.exe' specified in the Target nox is not valid. Make sure the path and file name are correct.**

Now it tells me in the properties of this shortcut to start with C:\Users\J\Desktop so I do. I have no idea why the system is not taking it, i am copying and pasting your exact write up minus the Users/USERNAME portion. What am I doing wrong guys!?!?!?

    The exact thing I put in is. C:\Users\J\Desktop\nvidiaInspector\nvidiaInspector.exe -forcepstate:0,0 -setGpuClock:0,1,1000 -setMemoryClockOffset:0,0,100

Surprisingly enough, S15 still seems to be the best portable/slim lappy on the market with IPS display that decently handles new games at FHD. Among those new Haswell laptops available now NONE seem to offer portability+IPS screen. Alienware 14 - IPS but rediculously bulky, Razer Blade 14 - no IPS, Gigabyte 14" - no IPS. Samsung series 7 - has relatively similar specs with better gfx card but 0,5 kg heavier. Asus U51 - terrible throttling and 2x price. RMBP 15" - pff.

The most portable prize though goes to the bravest who modded their S13 with IPS display. Whoosh

I was wondering if anyone ever tried using o/c with silent priority instead of ventilation. Risk is a risk, but I'm just curious.

I didn't test gameplay on Priority to Silence, but regular desktop/browsing was fine, not notably higher than on Balanced.
I would not use priority to ventilation except during gaming, since it reeeally arms the vents even at Idle, no O/C.

Is it possible to change the Cooler (Propeller) on the Vaio S 13 series laptop. Because any SSO and FDB bearing will be quieter and also more prone to higher temperatures than the current crappy magnetic or ball bearing they use.

    Is it do-able? Any thoughts?

Also: Which cooling tab would you reccomend? A big 230mm fan in the middle or 3 smaller ones 'distributed evenly?

    @Myst3ri0n

There is no better way than to start the weekend than this!

I just created an account to thank you, as I'm not an IT expert, and my contributions would be very basic.
But even this is something I even could do!
I've been checking this this forum since May and was hoping for a mod on Win8 (and see if I would have to balls to go through with it...).

Anyway, BIG THANKS for your work and efforts!

Thank you @Myst3ri0n, I have followed this topic for months and nearly giving up the ideas of overclock my sony vaio s13. Finally I found your solution with Nvidia inspector, it really make my GT 640M LE run like GT 650M, all of my games now can be smooth in 1920x1080 with medium setting =))

hi, i've been using the bios mod (900/900) since december when i got my s13 p (SVS13A1S9ES ), and so far until some days ago went really good, no issues at all, on windows 7 64.
Than i read about nvidiaspector "mod" and i decided to return to stock bios and get overclock in case i needed more power than the default clock. Also this "downgrade" went well and i could change gpu clock with nvidiaspector 's shortcuts (i never exceeded anyway, so far only 1000/1000 to check if i was in the right track as 3dmark etc, 900/900 was really good for me gaming sc2, path of exile, etc).
Meanwhile i also upgrade nvidia driver to latest (320.18).

Then shortly after nvidia driver stopped working. I noticed because i couldnt see the nvidia panel icon.
starting things like gpu-,z, nvidiaspector i see strange behaviour lke 0 (zero) gpu and memory clock for nvidia gpu, all ok for integraded intel.

also on windows hardware management there is a yellow mark on gt 640 le, denoting driver issue, and i say, ok, driver went nuts, lets reinstall.. so driversweep and all i reinstall first 320.18, then 310.something and last sony factory ones. Nothing, same problem, it seems that driver could not load and i cant use nvidia gpu.
Then i tried and reinstalled 900/900 bios mod, and same problem, gpu/memory clock 0 and driver not functioning.
the hardware switch between integrated and nvidia works because windows notify me, but the actual gpu remain the hd4000, it seems like nvidia gpu got turned off, disabled or something.

Now, before wiping the system up and reinstalling windows 7/8 to see if is a systems driver failure or some software glitch on the graphic switch speed/stamina, what can i do to check if there is an hardware issue with the gpu? all diagnostic software like hw64 and so on report nvidia gpu ok, only show zero clock on gpu/memory.

thanks for reading this long (and bad english sorry) post, but i really need help :|

    Hey guys,

But at the moment I have a strange problem, everytime I play and overclocked the graphic card before, he will throttle the card down to 135 mhz or 500 during the game. Sometimes it takes 5 minutes, sometimes a bit more.

The temperature is everytime okay, in max. 68.
I m using the 320.18 drivers and the stock Bios: R0142C5. Also everything is set to high performance and prior to ventilation, so I dont know what to do.
    Maybe u have an idea.

    Thanks in advance

    Justus

A lot of people reporting issues with the 320.18 drivers.

Maybe everyone should avoid that until new drivers release.

    Hey Guys

So I've been using the overclocking trick for a week or two with my Windows 8 Vaio S.

The only issue I have is that when im playing Battlefield 3, once my GPU temps reach 86 degrees the graphics card will automatically throttle down until the temps are stable, and then go back to 1000mhz/1000mhz.

Is there anyway that I can prevent the GPU from doing this or should I lower the clock?

    Hey,

i added the 900/1000 BIOS Mod and it works. but i dont know if there is a problem. since i use nvidiainspector, he shows me that my clock dont get higher then 570 Mhz, which is the Boost BaseClock. so my question: how can i fix that? when i run e.g. 3D Mark 11, the clock is set to 570 Mhz, so he never reach the 900 Mhz. Meanwhile The Memory Clock change to the 1000 Mhz, from 900 Mhz Base Memory Clock.
i changed the nvidia control panel preferences. i changed it 2 max power etc. but it just wont work.
Wha am i doing wrong?? or can Gpu-Z or nvidiainspector just not show the correct Clocks?

here is a link 2 my 3dmark score, which says the core clock is @ 405 Mhz?!
    http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/6784191

    i would recommend a answer.

    Greets, Seymie

    PS: i got a Sony Vaio SVS1311J3EW

Just want to post and let you guys know Myst3ri0n's solution works great for me! I'm using 1000/1000, same as the old BIOS mod on my Win7 S15, and the latest beta drivers 320.49. Thanks for a great solution that lets us use newer driver sets than 310.90, the last one which worked with the BIOS mod! The good news is, by not having to mod the BIOS, we don't have to void our warranties anymore either!

Hi guys, new to this forum and overclocking in general. Is there any reason to overclock to 1000/1000 instead of going higher? I think I saw one guy here go up to 1150/1100 or something? Does that leave the core temp unstable or something? Also, are you guys using cooling fans/pads while doing mid-heavy gaming? Thanks.

    Hi guys,

I have the same laptop that Amal77 has, minus the SSD. Same S13P with i7/640m. Except the overclock causes my system to overheat within 15 minutes of firing up the game. Yes I have limited my CPU to 99%. Even playing on stock clocks will cause an overheat in about 20 minutes. I'm running stock Sony drivers, no NVidia updates. Anyone have any advice?

More specifically, if Amal77 happens to see this, how did you get your laptop to stay cool? I'm constantly hitting 80C (throttling threshold) on GPU and 90C on CPU (99%). Would a fresh install perhaps fix any fan problems I might be having?

    Thanks.

Hi new here, my svs1511l3es can do 3dmark11 1050 core 1100 mem, but in games, so fare, it is better to lower mem to 975 to get 1033 on core.

But still a good chip, some can only do 830, thats why they also made the lower clocked bioses. Some are temp limited, but i have only seen 73 deg. on my GPU and 83 deg. on CPU, CPU set to 99%.

I have made a laptop cooler out of a leftover IKEA shelf some wood pices, tape and of cause a fan, a SCYTHE GT15. Oh and i took the PSU that powered some side fans on my PC, that broke 4 month a go.

I don't know how much of a diffrence it makes through, if you are temp limited, it is probably a much better idea to replace TIM. But may be some what delecate job to doo. One in this tread paid some one to do it.

I suffer from musckel tension and bad back so i shouldn't game or anything else really, but TV is borring after 25.5 years :).

The bios mod are not nessery any more. Look futher down in the start of this tread. You only need to use Nvidia inspector software now :D

Unfortunately my games are now slide shows, this is due to driver coruption
    right?

Dont know wether i should use the latest 320.49 WHQL, or waite a while.

My health is very bad as i said so i use as little time a possible on these house keeping stuff :)

Does only using Nvidia inspector for windows 8 risk the temps on the core at all? Would I still have to worry about getting a fan and cooling it while i OC?

No, but it depend on how good the TIM aplication is on your CPU and GPU. Use programs to monitor this like, z-gpu, realtemp for CPU, msi afterburner can stil be used to se FPS in games.

It also depens a lot on how much your games load the CPU. I have seen 87 Deg. on CPU now, so it is getting closer.
If CPU gets too hot, max CPU speed can be reduced in vaio control center.
