    Hi, patchseven.

Apologies for the delayed response, but the beginning of a new week is always hard for me ;). Anyhow, the only way that worked and got rid of my grinding/stuttering fan was spraying a Royal Purple Synthetic Penetrating Spray in two tiny opening under the sticker/fan label. I am attaching a picture for you.
    SVS151190xFan.jpg
Once you get the sticker partially peeled just spray some oil inside (WD40 should work great as well) two tiny openings, and then using pressurized air (preferably) spin you fan to get any excessive lubricant out before reinstalling. It literally is inaudible now, just like new ;). I could've tell the difference instantly when simply blowing on the fan. It would not move at all before the lubrication, but kept spinning quite a while after the fix ;)
Btw, you may notice the part number (KSB0605HB) on the sticker which is the fan assembly (without heatspreaders) itself. Very easy to swap for the bad fan. However, it may prove quite expensive:thumbsup:
I used the retailer linked below before, but the price of $45 is quite hard to swallow ;)...you should consider a can of oil :hi2:
Sony KSB0605HB-L101 Laptop CPU Cooling Fan Replacement for Sony KSB0605HB-L101
Good luck and update us on your fix ;).

It looks like I saved some of the early bios files that were posted. Here are the links for the stock and 1000/1000 bios's.

Hi, i need stock bios for sony vaio SVS1312K3E. I bought this laptop used and this came with modded bios.. i dont need it, so i need to reflash this. I tried the bios from sony support, but it says i already have the latest one. Anyways, everytime i start something that uses 3d, the core shows 998mhz. Confirmed with hwinfo and gpu-z.

Solved! R0143C5 bios worked. And i could reflash newest bios with stock 500mhz gpu :)

Now i need disassembly help with this svs13. Couldnt find any pics with google. Reason is, that i want to change gpu and cpu paste because removing/blowing all the dust and hair etc, didnt lower temps.. im hitting instant 75c when i try to play Battlefield 2 bad company, with pretty low graphics.

    I'm on windows 8.1 and I used Myst3ri0n!'s method.
What should I do after I changed the target path of the shortcut?
I double click on it and nothing happens. And I'm not sure if it is overclocked or not. This is the screenshot after I double clicked it and run the original nvidiaInspector program.

    Hi there.
Are you sure that your path is correct (Program Files vs Program Files x86)? Below are screenshots of my setup with first the directory, 2nd inspector and 3rd the path in inspector...
    Hope this helps ;)

Mate, I am there with you...there is absolutely no equal ...no matter how hard I look :eek2:
I absolutely love the design along with the actual portability. What I consider coming close is perhaps Razer Blade 14, but that's for another time and wallet to discuss :twitchy:.

So mad at Sony! I will literally not buy anything Sony until they bring Vaio back
    Cheers!

Has anyone got a fresh link for those BIOS mods? The ones posted a few comments back don't seem to work for me.

Also my fan is stuck at full speed. The ventilation settings in the control center no longer do anything. I've tried reinstalling drivers and Sony software but no luck, anyone have any idea how I can fix it?

Alright guys so I use windows 8 with an i5 3rd gen processor. Clocked the card to 1000MHz and got a HUGE boost in performance, thank you so much to the guy who discovered the windows 8 overclock.

Now my GPU stays in the safe ranges, but the CPU is exceeding the max temp and throttles down, after like 81C. I wanted to know if there's a -safe- workaround for this, other than getting better cooling (which I was considering to do). :) Thanks.

    Hi.
There're two possibilities here...one, a software issue and two, a hardware one considering that the fan does not have a control module but rather operates on voltage +/- adjustments from your mobo/utility. Do you run 640m LE overclocked via Bios or NVidia Inspector? Tried removing battery for ten minutes and restarting?
    Let us know

I see only two options. One, you are to get an active cooling pad for your table top gaming operations :D or two, you are going to open it up and refresh the paste on your CPU. Latter is what I have done with Artic Silver (not the Diamond one sadly ) and my gaming temps are fine. Mind you that I am running the 950/1000 nVidia Inspector overclock on my 640m LE.
Let us know what route are you going to try, and how well it works

Thanks for the reply. I have not overclocked the GPU, only found out it was possible after looking for a solution to my fan problem! I think it must be a hardware problem because I dual boot Ubuntu and the fan is on full speed in Ubuntu now too.
Looking at the sensors with NVidia Inspector, Temperature seems fine, goes up to about 60C after and hour of gaming. Power, Fan and Speed are all greyed out though.
Is is possible to replace a fan control module or is it part of the mobo?
I've had the laptop open with the battery out a few times for +10min while trying to figure out what's wrong with it.

I don't see the controller being anything other than perhaps a resistor...not sure where it would be located, sorry .

One thing that I am thinking though, my fan as it was going our was quite loud and seemed to be always in high rpms. Is yours getting loud or simply gets noisy in different ways randomly?

    Hi, thanks for the reply!

Yeah, that's what I thought. I just ordered a coolermaster cooling pad to see how that goes. Otherwise could you tell me how to repaste? I've opened up the back case of my laptop, but just cleaned it from the topmost layer, didn't dig any deeper. I could only see the battery which I could remove, and the hard-disk. :|

I'll tell you how it goes with the pad anyway, once I test it.

    EDIT:

Got my cooling pad. :) I also opened up the laptop and cleaned the fans/vents etc.

The temperatures have been affected slightly but sadly it still throttles down - it manages to hit 91-93C and goes down. :( I'm on 1000/1000Mhz

Here is a YouTube link on how to get half way in (which you have probably done). To fully expose the CPU&GPU you are going to have to remove the MB considering the location on the flip side. For that to be possible, all MB screws need to be removed and wiring disconnected. More importantly, the fan must come off along with the MB as it is tethered by heatpipes. I am attaching some shots when I had it disassembled. I recently purchased a new top panel with keyboard so I might try to make a pic/video tutorial on how to get to those chips. Hope this will resolve your trouble with heat. Looking fwd to updates on your case.

I reached the point shown in your first picture (without unscrewing the motherboard), and blew off all the dust and cleaned the fan the best I could. That's all I've done. The ambient temperature is ~28C which might be causing trouble - probably is. Still I just want to prevent the throttle down and stay in the safe temperature range with a decent boost. I have a nice coolermaster coolingpad (sadly it isn't making much of a difference), along with the cleaned up fan.

I'm pretty sure the ambient temperature is screwing me over (the laptop is just over a year old, so I doubt it's the thermal paste). But if you have any further suggestions on what I can do, I'll be sure to listen!

EDIT: Can someone tell me how to make the fan run at 100% or manually control the speed? (I might look into SpeedFan, but still)

Hi, mate. You are probably aware of this, but for the sake of reassurance your Vaio has a Control Center which comes up after pressing the Vaio Button in the top right corner of your laptop. Once opened, you should find a simple fan controller under -->Power and Battery<-- tab. Attaching a screenshot of my problem free settings...
    VaioCtrlCenter.JPG

Btw, I am still unclear at what point does your downthrottling occurs? Is it when gaming only? Can you confirm with me whether you actually set "maximum performance" in NVidia Control panel for each game title you play? Omitting that particular setting can bring your performance down even though hardware still works under relatively safe temps...Let me know .
    Cheers!

    Hi thanks for your reply!

Yes, I was aware of the control center settings, I've already done those.

The setting in the nvidia control panel isn't set on performance on the nvidia panel. Could you tell me if there's a difference in the game visuals (e.g. lower quality textures or something) on using that setting? I would imagine it does.

Yes, the throttling occurs only when gaming. I tried to downclock the processor to 95% and that fixed the problem to a good extent, since I haven't had problems otherwise. But I'm still open for input and solutions! :) I'll look into the nvidia setting and see if it makes a difference.

EDIT: Since my problem has been pretty much fixed by turning off turbo boost (that happens at 99% processor, folks), the temperatures fell by about 7-8C and back to the early 80C range - which is okay.

I'm curious as to how high the GPU can go, though. I've had peaks of 85C so far - is it possible to take it a notch further closer to (but lower than) 90? Or would that go too high. I had the impression that anything about under 90 is okay. :) Anyone who can give a little insight over this would be great.

PS. currently using the 1000/1000 oc

The Power Management Setting in question does not affect visuals unless you choose a game itself to set your details. The thing that it does affect is the FPS value especially if oc'd. First, the gameplay/benchmark/other starts running the max gpu/mem clocks, but shortly it all winds down. to a crawl...no matter whether on AC or battery. I made couple screenshots to illustrate what setting in particular I am talking about.
    Step1.JPG Step2.JPG
Bottom line is that choosing the Maximum Performance keeps your graphics running top speed...any other option and you're not getting the FPS you could

Hahah, I am ok with my 950/1000, but am equally curious about the limits of 640LE ;).
Btw I am really glad that you have it under control for what it is worth, mate.

Hmm, I had it on adaptive because I have low-intensity games too! XD I've changed it to maximum performance now, thank you!

I wonder what the limits would be, because I'd like to play AC: Unity the best I can when it comes out! XD

Is there anyone who attempted replacing the i5 MB w/640m LE (Sony SVS151190X) for the i7 MB w/640m LE? The form factor is from what pictures show exactly the same. If I'm not mistaking, the BIOS/CMOS chip is also part of the MB hence there should not be any compatibility problems as far as hardware errors/conflicts...There is an i7 MoBo with 640m LE on sale for ~$240 which
could prove a good value in upgrade terms...
Yes  or No :( answer would suffice if provided from reputable member. Appreciate your time in advance.
    Kind Regards,

If anyone can actually run 1000/1000 without throttling in games that utilise both the cpu and gpu significantly, they've got an incredibly lucky machine or a very low ambient temperature. It simply isn't possible in 99% of cases.

For games that keep both under high load for hours such as Civilization V, barely any GPU OC is possible without reducing CPU speed. The sweet spot for Civ is around 90% CPU max power state and 700mhz gpu. For more typical games, up to around 830mhz gpu is possible, still with 90% cpu power.

I have terribly high ambient temperatures, and I managed 1000/1000 without throttling just by underclocking the CPU (not too terrible a trade, provided you make a separate power plan for gaming - which is what I've done.)

So, I suppose I've pushed to the limit, huh? We do have a terrible card for newer games. XD

Hi guys, trying to boost a little the performance for this incredible laptop! :D
I tried to mod my nvidia 640le card with the nVidia Inspector... but when i play a game and the temperature reach 80°C, the game slows down a lot... like if the card does something to prevent higher temperature or i don't know... any suggestions? (I already set the priority to ventilation)

    I used this: "C:\Program Files (x86)\nVidia Inspector\nvidiaInspector.exe" -forcepstate:0,0 -setGpuClock:0,1,950 -setMemoryClockOffset:0,0,100

    Thx! ;)

Hi guys im new to this thread. I am looking to buy Sony's S Series windows 8 model that are now for sale. Do you know if this laptop will be compatible with your bios modS?.....It looks identical to the Sony S Series 13P model from 2012....even running a Nvidia 640m LE graphic card.

    Model Info:
    VAIO S13A Series SVS13A290S Performance

    Hi.
Your nVidia Inspector path is exactly the same as mine so your problem is without doubt in nVidia Control panel.
I already posted a solution as many other have before me. Here's the link to my post which is pretty clear on how to stop your from downclocking (post #2022):

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/677079-sony-vaio-s-bios-mod-gt640m-le-203.html#post9725309

Btw 80-90 degrees is pretty good temp for our 640LE. Let us now the fix worked .

    To Wren007 and avienonline2:

You guys are both out of luck as far as Bios Mod goes due to Sony locking out the capability from their Windows 8 lineup. However, you can take full advantage of the NVidia Inspector overclocking method which I consider superior by all means as it allows you to revert back to stock through simple shortcut when gaming clock is not required.
Follow the below link and refer to post #1817 for relevant Nvidia Inspector configuration:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/677079-sony-vaio-s-bios-mod-gt640m-le-182.html

Hope this helps. Enjoy your Vaios!

Thank you for the reply! I have read the thread backward a lot, but i didn't notice your post just a couple of pages back... :(

I'm going to try your solution, then i will edit this post to tell if i managed to solve the problem! ;D

    EDIT:
Ok i tried the solution but i didn't solved completely yet... but it seems that now, sometime it clock down, sometimes dont... i'm going to do some more test! :D

Driver Nvidia 306.97 if it is of help (i didn't update by while because when i did the last time, i couldn't use anymore the Stamina-Speed switch...

It's very unlikely that your laptop causes the downclocking through any other means. Make sure to specifically select option "Prefer Maximum Performance" for the specific title that you are running. This also eliminates the right click .exe execution which would then present you with option for adapter selection. Should you still be experiencing intermittent choppy framerate, it is without doubt the issue of dedicated/shared graphics memory and texture resolution. If you have the 2GB 640LE version then running Ultra High textures is feasible (some games), but will most likely result in intermittent choppy gameplay due to texture buffer overloads. I suggest you try lowering textures (high/medium - truly not that bad of visual downgrade) should you be running 1GB 640LE or less than 12GB (max) of system RAM.

BTW, BLACK VAIO SVS15 HAS NEW SILVER SCREEN PRESENCE - AFTER JAMES BOND DEBUT IT NOW STARS IN EQUALIZER! TIMELESS DESIGN ;)

Why can't we keep using the bios hack if we install a fresh windows 8? (not going through upgrade step)

When I installed Windows 8 on my laptop I ended up flashing new W8 bios at the same time which was required for proper function of Vaio's care center...Now, it's not truly required to do so and should you have not flashed new Bios on your laptop then you are absolutely capable of running said 640m mods on your device. Refer to the initial set of posts for specific Bios versions required in to properly carry out the 640m mod. ALWAYS make sure that your BIOS ver. is listed within the mod thread.
I'd still recommend to go the NVidiaInspector's way simply for the added control over the off session (gaming) GC clock settings.

Speaking of overclocking using NVidiaInspector, does it work on newer drivers? I am still using 327.23 from 2013.

I may be a bit slow but I did the nvid inspector since I'm running 8.1 and copy/paste the 950/1000 speeds. Clock does hit 950 but gpu clock stays at 500 and shows boost of 570. I went into the nvid control panel and adjusted it for maximum performance and not sure what I'm missing at this point?

Should I avoid the overclock settings in the inspector?

    Many thanks
