I have the same questions as Hallo123 - are there some compelling reasons to switch to Vista 64 bit?
-
No reason to install 64 bit at all and as the thread so aptly points out, many reasons not to.
If (and only if) you have 4GB installed it will all show up on the various utilities but since the OS itself uses much more resources there will actually be less memory available to applications for almost all cases since the operating system has a larger footprint. Start up and shut down times are longer. Hardware and software compatibility is worse than the 32 bit version, in my experience. In addition Vista 64 seems to have occassional trouble managing memory and can go into an unresponsive state for no apparent reason that can last for many minutes -- not a good idea if the laptop is nearing the end of it's battery life.
The net difference between the two versions is the size of the address pointers and, if you'll pardon a bit of an exaggeration, 64 bit is twice as SLOW as 32 bit, not fast, since every 64 bit operand will require twice as many memory accesses as a 32 bit operand.
The biggest reason to use a 64 bit OS is to access over 4GB of memory. At the time that Vista was released there was a study floating around (don't recall the link) that showed for benchmarks that Vista 64bit required 6GB of memory to equal the performance of 32bit vista with 3.5.
Note also that for serious applications (and especially games) there will be a double whammy for notebooks as the increased 64-bit OS memory requirements will mean more swapping to disk and much sooner than with a 32bit OS. Compared to a comparable desktop machine the drives in a notebook are horribly slow (like 2 to 4 times slower) and this will mean even more of a performance penalty when installing a 64bit os on a 4GB laptop. The increased swapping will also decrease battery life since there will be additional harddisk activity.
Of course if the laptop is only used for light-duty activities like web surfing, email, word processing, etc. then it's not going to make much difference either way but it won't be better with 64bit. -

I used to have unexplained random lockups with Vista Ultimate x86.
I never came to understand what was the reason behind it.
Installed x64 and it's rock stable.
I'm finding x64 nearly as fast as x86 (I'm not playing games) and when I upgraded to Windows 7 x64 it was perfect.
The argument of x86 being faster than x64 might be valid but it's clear that the next OS from Microsoft will be first installed by default in 64 bit flavour so we might as well get used to it. -
Thank you for these drivers! I even more appreciate it when you list them in order.
-
sure np.. glad you find it useful
-
Thanks Firestone, great job
Has anyone tested these yet? This should be all you need rigth? Or are there still features missing compared to 32-bit?
-
its interesting to note that the new refresh 91 series is ONLY available in x64bit, as with the TT series. So that future is already upon us.
A friend of mine checked one out and was quite surprised how good x64 was, compared to when he tried one out before.
Good news for this thread....drivers are guaranteed. -
Hi there,
Thanks for the post, does this driver compatible with the north american Z version? ie=Z590?
i look at the spec it seems they are exact the same but just want to double check.
Thanks
Andrew -
just check the original driver set names and choose the same driver names from new one
-
okie
Thanks
Andrew -
if there are version listed with the vaio, usually that mean the program is locked to that specific model. need to do some additional bypass of model check..
if the webby fail, you can try the ones i uploaded. some of the files are newer than the one that sony posted anyway..
eg. realtek audio / protector suite / intel matrix / chip ... -
Sony USA has released the Vista 64 bit drivers for the Vaio Z690.

Thank Firestone.
im downloading your files rite now and doing the ugrade to 64 bits but Home premium version tho.. do you think those drivers you posted work with Home Premium version?/
Thanks
Andrew
btw, i used my 64bits key instead of the Z590 Key.. do you think it's fine? or should i use the Z590 key instead? -
The keys aren't bound to a 64- or 32 bits cd. You can use them in any way you like. If you'd used ABR (google for it) you could've preserved your activation by Sony (with the Sony OEM key) and just 'paste' it into your new install. The license file (xrm-ms) from a 32-bit Business License works for an Ultimate 64-bit install too, you just need to change to the Vista Ultimate Trial key, ending in 932cc (from my memory). Sony'll never detect it because the licenses are present in the bios for all vista versions =) (well, at least Business and Ultimate)

There is no Video Drivers on the sony site for Vaio Z690. What do you guys use for the intel and Nvidia graphics for the Z? Has anybody tried Windows 7 64bit with these drivers?
-
Did you ever try to use search before to ask?

ok, take a look at page 26

No video drivers? Thats a must.

-_-"... we all know Sony hasn't updated the graphics chip or any other main hardware component of the motherboard, so don't be an *ss and just follow ANY of the guides that this topic features and just install de drivers for the older models. And 64-bit should work fine if I can trust microsoft. The link to the vaio 64 bit mirror in japan is soewhere in the beginning of the topic.
Edit: For your convenience, I've added a link

Best Regards,
Andrew -
Anyone knows if the 64Bit driver works with the VGN-z11wn/b?
-
yes it does - all Z models
-
did you try to install VAIO Control Center
-
I have a Sony VGN-Z591U and have been unable to get the graphics drivers working properly.
Here is my process:
Install Intel chipset driver
reboot
Install Intel storage driver
reboot
Install Sony® Programmable I/O Control Device Driver
Install Sony® Firmware Extension Parser
reboot
Install Nvidia drivers with switch set to speed setting
reboot
Bluescreen everytime
Any ideas? -
Hi,
Please download the 64bits files page 26 and it should be working. at first mine is not working as well but then after i installed sp1 then everything working fine except for the hard drive protection and S1,2 keys
Cheers,
Andrew -
Firestone..I did but I'll redo again will let u know
Andrew
btw, my machinese boost so much quicker then the 32bits
only 50 seconds!!
-
Please keep in mind that you need vista sp1 installed to correctly install the vodep card drivers. Took me 2 days to find out i was using a mislabeled dvd (without sp1)
-
I just did a clean install of HP 64 bit and am getting BSOD when I do a normal boot ( ecache.sys) can only boot in safe boot.... Any ideas guys ?
-
I'm using a Vista Ultimate disk with SP1 already installed.
-
I'm having the exact same problem here.
-
Is it maybe something related to drivers?
-
I used the drivers listed in the earlier post and installed in the same order.
-
from what i read, ecache.sys is the vista boot critical file.
that mean your vista installation is corrupted most likely..
have you tried to get another cd copy of vista and try to reinstall it again?
would suggest you to do a reformat of the hdd and try reinstall with a new disc set and see whether
the problem goes away -
i just used "diskpart" to clean the disk and reinstalled Vista using the same disk. I followed the order or drivers in the driver package uploaded by a member in the earlier post BUT i skipped the intel storage driver package. Now I am not getting the BSOD !!!!
-
Fixed my problems. Turns out I had to install a non SP1 version of vista, install the drivers and then upgrade to SP1.
-
Just wanted to thank everyone in this thread. Especially "Firestone" for posting all the drivers on page 26.
I have a VGN-Z590 - I just swapped out my hard drive to an SSD drive and installed Vista 64 bit business.
Everything works! Lightening fast! -
Sony has got the Nvidia drivers for the US site:
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNZ690&upd_id=4419&os_id=36
I know that Chong is looking for this for some time, hope it helps. -
For those who gets EFI / GPT error during partitions stage of installing Vista x64. I tried completely erase hdd, nulled bootsector by hands, maked partitions with 3d party tools. Nothing helps!
The solution is here:
As a normal vista can be loaded in safe mode, Vista installer can be loaded in safe mode too!
1. Turn on
2. Before install begins press F8 several times
3. Choose "Safe mode"
4. After this you'll get "partitions stage" with NO EFI / GPT warnings.
DO NOT accept to install vista with with EFI / GPT warnings when loader lets you make a partition Disk0 Partition3. After install it will be unbootable.
Spent a day for it! I hope this will help someone. Checked several times.

I am also looking for "Sony Notebook Controller Device". Let me know if anybody knows.

I wanted to dig this thread up because I'm having major problems with installing Vista SP1 x64 (and Win 7 x64) on my Vaio Z590.
I've tried the safe mode installation and it still gives errors unless I format the HDD as a GPT with the 200MB EFI & 128MB partitions (so the installation defaults to Disk 0 Partition 3).
Even in safe mode, I can't proceed without doing this.
Then, once installed, the installations BSOD repeatedly.
When I install XP or Vista 32-bit on MBR partitions, there's no problem.
My BIOS and EC are the following:
Bios: R2165M3 (also tried R3052M3, but nothing earlier)
EC: R1280M3
Is my EFI/BIOS version the problem, and is there a work-around that will let me install them? It's as if the Vaio's bios doesn't boot from the HDD in EFI mode after the installation... -
Hey guys if ur having the windows 7 64bit or vista64bit problem installing on ur vaio z, I figured it out last month. This method works WITHOUT having to erase or format your hard drive. Click this link
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=337179&page=9 and read the begining few posts on that page by me to get some background info on the EFI GPT partition problem. Then basically the sum of it all up is as follows.. Then download 64bit drivers that Fredguy put together that you can find in this thread. Sorry if its long but its just copy/paste from how I explained it earlier
Alright fella's. Before i decided to spend an hour or so of research, I resorted to the good ol fashion trial and error. And I have your answers to this EFI/BIOS GPT/MBR problem. And its 10000 times more easy then i beleive we expected.
Ill start with the original error talking about how windows 7 64 bit needs to be on a GPT partition. Normally if your going to switch your drive from MBR to GPT the drive needs to be wiped clean. U need to be booting from another jump drive or external and then clean off ur whole hard drive, OS and all.
This is the solution, and please follow everything exactly the first time so you dont run into any problems. Defrag( YOU MUST DO THIS ) your main drive so your able to shrink it using the built in vista disk manager. Shrink up around 20gb of space. If your having difficulty with this, then try to create a new partition and have it take space from the main vista partition.
THE KEY is not formating this new partition. There is a option to format it to a NTFS partition. What you want to do is format it to a logical partition. It will tell you that without formating it you will not be able to put data on it. The windows 7 64bit install disc will do this formatting for you in the GPT format(im assuming its gpt, it just gets the job done). Then with your lists of partitions when choosing where to install, the logical partition is the only one that will allow you to install windows 7 64 bit. Then later on you can download Acronis Disk Director and set this logical partition to an Active and Primary BOOTABLE partition with no problems as long as u have no more than 3 other primary partitions.
So the simple answer is, just create a new partition but dont format it with the NTFS option. Choose no format and it becomes a logical partition that the Windows 7 64bit install disc will take care of. And now your up and running 64bit. And if you wanna get rid of the vista partition completly like i said download Acronis Disk Director and make that logical partition a primary/active partition with the advanced options. -
I am new to this website and just received my new Sany Vaio Z590 NFB which has 320GB 5400 rpm HDD. I was hoping if you could help me on instructions to swap replace hard drive with a faster 7200 rpm one since you replaced yours... -
Hi firestone,
How would I install 8-86-64 SFEP 8.0.0.1 There is no setup package for this. Thanks for all your help. -
If you get the GPT error when trying to install vista, here is an easy fix.
1. Put in the DVD
2. Navigate to the "repair my computer" link
3. go to command prompt
4. enter "diskpart"
5. enter "list disk"
6. enter "select disk 0" or whichever disk you wish to install windows
7. enter clean
8. close CMD
9. restart your computer
Be warned that this will completely erase all partitions on your Z. -
Vesu and anybody else. WHAT DONT U GET FROM MY POST? There is 100% zero need to erase any partitions on ur vaio z when installing any windows 64bit. Follow my post and your fine, end of story. Never delete ur current OS to test out a new one. U can have a dual boot 32bit and 64bit OS on ur vaio z very simply done.

Hello Guys,
I am still on the way to installing Vista Ultimate 64 on a Vaio Z31.
Apparently I get a BSOD pr it freezes during the installation process.
The Ultimate version is including SP1 and I read this can cause problems.
The "Expanding files" step is working fine, it crashes during the "Update" step...
Are there any suggestions how I could install this anyway or what else I could try?
I do not have any Ultimate without SP1 to try....
Thanks a lot for any help!
Cheers, Sam
