In the update it says SP1 RC.
That doesn't sound right? -
yes!!!!!!!!!
-
Sp1 Rc = Sp1 Rtm
? -
Apparently so, Max checked the version number and it matched that of what is believed to be RTM SP1's version number. Just double check yours against the one posted in this thread.
-
true that! the version number i have matches the one which is reported by RTM
-
But it shouldn't say RC even if it has the same version number.
-
That's what i'm thinking...
-
It think it has to do with the fact that this 'final' release was given out as the last RC....simply no changes were needed to that last RC to make it the RTM.
am I correct? -
When SP1 finally arrives on window's update, will SP1 RC have to be uninstalled before it shows up on a person's list?
(Essentially, how has microsoft handled SP's for RC users in the past?) -
Lenovo system update returns the following this evening:
As if it hadn't been made apparent enough already, this patch also suggests that build 18000 is the same as RTM. I don't think this patch should be offered by system update if a system is running a beta version of SP1. I'm willing to bet that system update checks the build number of SP1 installed, and if it is RTM (build 18000), then it offers the new R&R patch.
Someone running an older beta build - run system update and prove my theory right or wrong. -

In the past you have ALWAYS had to uninstall. But this is the first time that I know of where the last beta was the same build as the RTM. So precedent tells us nothing. Everyone is just speculating on the outcome.

Even if they did, it REALLY won't prove a thing. I suspect you MIGHT be right, but until the actual release to Windows Update occurs, we have NO IDEA how Microsoft is going to handle this.

Is this registry hack not successful anymore?
-
Doesnt seem like it. I used it on two machines I have here at home earlier in the week. Tried yesterday on another, and got nothing. Even thru today - no new updates.
-
It was working earlier this week,
I reinstalled vista yesterday coz
i want to get SP1 on a clean installed vista,
but now it seems doesn't work anymore... -
here's what i just got in my update list today (KB936330). I uninstalled my RC and this showed up afterwards
-
Is this not RC anymore?
final public release? -
That RTM was available since January and it wasn't until the 4th I realized it is actually the final version.
-
im not sure whats what with this service pack 1, i did the 1st 2 small updates, and ive had the service pack 1 available for about 10 days or so,ive checked it every day and noticed the publishing dates change, so i presume that means they are updating it still ?
right now i have the kb936330 one available to update, and that one says published on the 13/02/08 -
Yeah, I just installed the KB936330 SP1. It works great, but takes half an hour to install...
-
I tried several times, and it worked again,
don't know the reason though -
Thanks OP! It worked for me and I'm on the official SP1!

I made the changes but it still isnt avaliable when i go on update...
I copy and pasted the delete sections, but no delete conformation came up, could that be something to do with it? -
did you run command prompt as an admin.?
be sure to do this.
try more times if it still doesn't work,
yesterday night I had to run update and ask it to check updates for 4, 5 times before it detects SP1
just try, it should work -

Is there a way to check if those files are still in the registry or not? Do i have to be fully updated before being able to see this SP1 update.. because i havn't updated since December. Also how do i know if im running CMD under admin or not?
-
no you don't have to be fully updated to see SP1
-
Just tried the hack on another machine that I have here at home and its working.
-
Work fine.
As for the argument about waiting for the final release because "if it ain't broke, don't fix it?" Well if one can have a better experience with less bugs and greater optimizations RIGHT NOW, well I see no reason to wait if there's no problems... and there aren't any real issues which I can see. One could say the same thing about remaining with XP instead of using Vista, but I happen to like Vista and will take on any improvements that appear, even if they're pre-release. -
Exactly! Pre-release but it's the final version! So why not get it? If it ain't broke then don't fix it, that's just plain dumb! it's the final! there is no reason to say this! I always install service packs even if my system wasn't broke, especially if I know if they are final.
But i didn't bother saying anything to those who think like that coz this is a personal choice and I personally don't care if others installed it. I just posted the way to do it. Then they have to make the call.
And u did the right choice early so
-
Hi, I just installed Vista SP1, all is well. Thank you Max.
I have a question, where does everyone see the it being a RC? Besides the update detail it mentioned the upgrade being a beta, I don't see any where it mentioning this being a RC build.
Also, I had a weird black screen problem and had to "Force" shutdown, during update, I hope it's not going to be a problem. -
i think MS is changing its name,
last time when i use this hack, the update name is "service pack 1 release candidate refresh 2" or something like that.
then I reinstalled vista, I applied this hack again and the update name is "service pack 1"
the build# is still 1800, but the name changed, may be they're preparing for public release in march -
Don't worry about the name - when I tried it the update was marked as "Release Candidate 1", but I checked the version numbers located in the registry for the updated Vista against screenshots from what is known to be the final version of the service pack, and they match.
Since the update hasn't been made fully public yet, I suppose Microsoft don't care much about the titling of the update yet. It will look right once officially released of course. -
The importand thing is the build number the name can easily be edited in the registry!
Mine says Service Pack 1 by the way.
but in the registry it says:
6001.longhorn_rtm.080118-1840
6001.18000.x86fre.longhorn_rtm.080118-1840
This sounds right? -
-
I will wait until it appears on Windows update
-
type regedit in RUN
go to HKEY_Local_Machine\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\
look at the BuilLab numbers over there -
same here
-
awesome thanks
-
i cant get it to work...
-
Then wait for the public release by Microsoft! -
Oh, so now you recommended it? What happened to "Get it early!"?
-
I was makin' fun of the guy! coz he said I can't make it work! well how the hell are we supposed to helpif he provides no details!!!!!!!!!
-
I just don't know what to say any more.....
-
kthxbye
...... -
vista feels a bit snappier now although it takes longer to boot for my Sony TZ
-
It's because SP1 deletes some data that help Vista boot faster (such as prefetch) after a few days, it'll be as fast as usual.
-
It took a while for it to show up on my windows update, try...20-30 refreshes, from the first update to SP1 final showing up. God, that was a pain in the ass.
-
If it hasn't already been posted, here is proof this is the final version.
-
I'm not convinced. If you read this, you'll get the impression that refresh 2 is still just a beta.
It's the last bit that makes me wonder. It might be, just like having to uninstall the last RTM before installing the latest RTM (refresh 2), you'll have to uninstall refresh 2 before installing the final version, which will be released on WU.
Just my 2 cents.
