@kegobeer
Thanks for the info. If what you are telling us is true, I still wouldn't mind installing this "beta" now. The reason being that, I get to "test drive" the SP1 before the final release, and so far so good! If this is indeed just the beta and there are more to come with the final release of SP1, then this is a good thing. I see no down side to this because I have already backup my harddrive all I have to do is restore and bang, SP1 final here I come.
-
I cannot get it to work. When the paste the last step in the command prompt and hit enter it says access denied. This is the one where it adds to the registry.
I am the administrator.
Any ideas? -
I suggest waiting for the final release then. should't be that long
-
just wondering... when SP1 comes out, will there be new drivers from notebook manufacturers for their parts? network driver, chipset driver, lan driver, etc... If so, should we wait till the new drivers come out before we install SP1?
-
i dont think so. what's the need? they work fine now
-
Do you have to uninstall sp1 refresh to see the final build in WU? I did the registry tweak but it still not showing up and i did the registry tweak yesterday.
-
I guess you didn't read my previous post?
-
Find the command prompt in the start menu, right click and you'll see a menu. Click on "Run as administrator". Then it will work.
-
That worked, Thanks!
-
Isn't working for me. I'm off to download the standalone.
-
Tried the hack in the OP twice, didn't take. Each time I'm told that there are no updates available.
-
Some people have had to do the hack multiple times and restart many, many times to get it to work.
-
just run the update search a few times
-
ditto! sometimes it won't appear unless udate a few times
-
I would not reccomend installing this Service Pack yet!
the 1 on Windows Update with the Hack "Is not" the final Version. it says RTM but it is an "Escrow build" Escrow build = a build labeled as RTM then put through rigorious testing, if it passes it is sent off, if not it goes back to testing. The Windows Update hacked version is a Refresh of Vista SP1 RC refresh 2
Microsoft found problems with that build right before rtm with it killing some drivers and pulled it. The Version Shipped to the OEMs is a bit different
I have the "final" RTM of Vista SP1...i got it from a friend who works "At Microsoft" and the RTM build is not 1840....and the md5 hash is not that posted on zdnet or any where else on the Internet. That is a fact
The reason i know this is because the OEM's got a ISO of the "Entire" Vista OP system with SP1 slipstreamed, not a standalone installer. the ISO os over 3 gigs in size. all the Stanbalone Installers you see are not the final RTM, but most likely the 1840 escrow build. the same 1 Windows Update is hosting that Microsoft has not pulled yet.
The Standalone Installer i have that i got from my Friend who works at Microsoft has a digital signature of Feb 1st, 2008(not Jan 2008 like the other builds) Check the Digital signature.
But even with the Final RTM...i must warn you. The reason Microsoft is holding back this Service Pack is because it breaks certain device drivers, especially on notebooks. for example, installing SP1 RTM on 6 out of the 10 notebooks i have seen "Breaks" the synaptics Touchpad Driver. Scrolling capability is lost, and you can't reinstall the driver as you will get a "Failure to communicate with the Device Driver" error.
also some video cards will expereince Servere Graphics corruption with vista SP1 RTM installed. Microsoft is working with these Hard ware Vendors to "Update" these device drivers and "push" these affected Device drivers to users via Windows Update "before" installing the Service Pack.
Install the Escrow or the Final RTM at your own Risk...if your have one of the affected devices installed on your system, the Driver will fail and the only way to fix it is to reinstall Windows, System restore will not fix it, and most likely reinstalling the Service Pack after a system restore or uninstall will fail
If you want to be safe, wait atleast a week after Microsoft pushes it to be susre you won't have any problems. If it isn't broke don't fix it
Good day -
ScuderiaConchiglia NBR Vaio Team Curmudgeon
I just downloaded the official release of SP1 from MSDN and installed it. I swear things seem to be quicker than even the SP1 Beta. IE seems faster at loading pages and apps seem a bit quicker to open. I did not gain disk space as others have reported, but then again I uninstalled the beta, cleared all my restore point and then made a ghost image of my machine before I started the install. I did run the post install cleaner app, since I have a ghost image I can revert too if needed. But even after running the cleanup I lost about 1 .3 gig of hard drive space to the SP1 install process.
But I'll gladly give that up for the speed increase I feel that I have gotten. (Sorry I have no definitive measurements just a "it feels faster".)

Meh, I'll just wait. I want it bad, but I can wait for the "official" release." THey release it first in case they have to change something, right?
-
i downloaded the torrent one and it works just fine. Network is much faster and overall system is much stable is smoother

Microsoft pulled the SP1 release today:
http://www.news.com/Microsoft-pulls-Vista-SP1-update/2100-1016_3-6231299.html -
I think you misread the article. They pulled one of the prerequisite updates. I think someone here posted a fix for that.
-
Ah, cool - long day at work!
-
Hi, I uninstalled SP1 for various reasons and now the windows update thing is constantly thinking I need to update. How do I unhack my registry?
-
right click the SP1 update and choose "hide update"
-
LOL thanks.
-
where would that leave you in terms of when microsoft make it available ?, would the new one come up ?
-
You have the option to unhide the update
-
For me it showed up in automatic updates yesterday, and it took forever rebooting after installation

I tried to update it but how do i know that "that" update is for SP1??
Plss help -
Just install it and keep restarting and checking for new updates. I just updated both mine and my wife's Vistas using the method in the OP. (be sure to use CTRL+Shift+Enter when bringing up your CMD prompt so that it's in administrator mode when you do the commands. Reboot. Install all the updates (don't worry about language ones). Reboot again. This time around there should be an update that is about 68mb or there abouts. That's SP1. Install it (three steps with prompts). Reboot. It automatically does three more steps. You're done.
-
i updated last night... i dont think SP1 was installed... how exactly do i know if i'm running on SP1?

Is there a way to download it again been trying for a long time to recontinue the download but to no avail. -

the easiest method is to wait for the official release

Well thanks for the tip but I managed to get it anyway
A whole lot of trouble came when I finshed downloading it but alls well -
good congrats
-
I read through all the comments and still don't understand, is the SP1 that this hack enabled the final build? or the final release is when MS puts it up for download? i have the current available installed and it works fine.
By the way i have the SP1 with the model number KB936330 *edit* -
I just did this and now in Windows Update I get the error "code 80070490"
can anyone help me fix this? -
Hmm, just updated on a lappy and a desktop. Both had weird outcomes...Both are totally usable but just "weird"
-
-
Got it to work, didn't notice much difference....what are the major noticable updates?
My 3dmark06 score went down by a couple hundred points.
-
Worked perfect for me. I can't complain.
