Thanks OP for all your help, I really appreicate it. I am still awaiting my free upgrade disk but really need to get going, so can I clean install Win7 pro 64 using the iso and then activate it when I receive my product key in the post. My questions is essentially - Can I use an OEM key to activate a retail copy? Has anyone actually done this and its worked?
-
I take it that these are the exact same links you are given when you purchase from Digital River, correct? I'm confused because I believe I qualify to purchase Windows 7 Professional for $30 but when I add it to my cart it lists it as an upgrade. Even if I do get a license key from them would I be able to use the full version to install a fresh copy of Pro (despite that it lists the version as an upgrade when added to cart)?
EDIT: It seems that more confusion has cleared up as users have said that Vista Home Premium can be upgraded to Professional. I think I got it mixed up in my head when I read that if you opt for the free upgrade and you only have Home Premium Vista you'd get the same for 7 etc. If I'm not wrong you guys can disregard this post as I've found my answer. -
-
ny355145: Yes, that's the idea. Just be sure to get the Home Premium, because that's the license key you have.
Also, the installer will do a clean install, so back up all your files first. -
Hi,
I believe my old desktop is running an illegal copy of Vista Ultimate, do you think if it will work?
Thanks. -
If you do a clean install and buy a windows 7 license, this will work guaranteed -
Thanks, I think that's what i need to do too.
-
Velocity, I just got my new HP laptop in and of course they didn't send me a copy of Windows 7. I just bought a pack of DVD-R to back up my computer with. Can I use DVD-R to burn Windows 7 on?
Also, what do I need to download before I download your 3 links? (i.e. Winzip) -
isnt of having the all in one windows 7 dvd, is there anyway to just get a link to windows 7 ultimate?
-
I have copied off everything from my (fast) Flash Voyager 16GB USB stick, ready to format to whatever (NTFS?)
* DO I make a partition whilst formating - so that I can KEEP the Win7 bootbale iso on it (and then have other partition with all my other files and programs etc on it*)
* In fact would that mean I end up with 3 partitions in fact (as you have to have a boot partition anyway???)
Thanks -
can we just open the ei.cfg file in notepad or something and change it from professional to ultimate to have it as an ultimate install insted of doing an all in one disk? I found the bin patcher, but it will not work...i get target size unexpected error when using bin patcher...
-
You don't need any other software besides something to burn the iso -
-

4 hr download just for the 1st setup
. Why doesn't Microsoft just allow anyone who has a Windows 7 product key to login to their website and have access to downloading the ISO?
-
This should be stickied. I had to look for it and it was on page 2.
-
just updated the guide with Korean (thanks grimskies), French, German, and Spanish language versions
-
it won't be that bad anyway, the 1st box file is the largest, after that the files arent that big -

OK (SUCCESS) UPDATE
* If you follow everything carefully - yep - not only does it work ... but I cannot believe (with a fast USB stick) just how quickly I got W7 to load on my laptop - awesome !!
* I opted for W7 Home Premium (as someone has suggested that as my laptop is limited to 32 bit structure ,any higher W7 would be wasted).
Observations:
1) Samsung 128GB MLC SSD (HP P/N: 500586-001) works great so far .. BUT ...
2) ... I did not do 'format' or anything when I got to that stage in the W7 install. W7 (Home Premium) seems to NOT have recognised it as an SSD. Neither does Everest or any other software. If I go into Defragmenter ... the SSD (C: drive) is there (ie NOT excluded as I thought it is meant to be).
3) Although running very nicely now (1), my observations in (2) lead me to believe that the performance of my Samsung SSD may degrade far faster than other SSDs ?? i) W7 seems to NOT have recognised it as such (this was main factor for loading W7 with my new SSD) ...and ... ii) Will the rumoured formware upgrade for this SSD mean that I will have Trim, GC (or both ) AND the firmware will make W7 recognise it as a SSD (if I reformat and repeat a fresh install again) ?
* I noticed that pretty much everything worked STRAIGHT after install WITHOUT needing drivers yet! You would never get my old Dell Laptops looking so seemingly 'OK' without loading the correct drivers.
* Some drivers (945 Express Chipset, Conextant Modem, 02Micro SmartCard Reader) were actually loaded at very 1st W7 generated Microsoft Update procedure).
* So far so good - but I think (like Vista that I have seen, but not used before) .. a lot of the desktop 'eye candy' is unnecessary & just a resource hog. OK - so a bit more of a 'Mac' look - but Mac OS is a hell of a lot more efficient and lean !
-
The really good news is that I have been interchanging my 2.5" HDD (with XP Pro) and the new SSD (W7 HP) + booting them up without worry:
i) My 2nd HDD drive caddies only take PATA IDE 2.5" drives
ii) My currrent method does away with worrying about dual boot or whatever for now. -
Does anyone get any errors with trying to get the 64 bit english version to work? I download all the files, even using the downthemall program. When I attempt to run the exe I get an error right at the end about folder rights like I may not have access. But I am on a simple machine, also tested it on multiple machines, and i get the same message each time
-
-
Yeup so I may just be a total idiot or the brainfart of the month. I guess I was truely getting the error in terms of doing that setup on a 32 bit machine with that 64 bit setup so that was giving the error. So right now I am getting the iso created.
Sorry for the mixup, after this time to see if i can get it setup on a flash drive! -
added a note to the OP about the iso>usb tool due to increased requests in this thread/elsewhere in the forum

the lack of MD5 hash check was driving me nuts... so i DL'ed both and made iso's with and without the ei.cfg file
x64 unmolested:
CRC32: DAE10CB6
MD5: 8F60F009E53AAC1714C0CC076BC313A4
SHA-1: 2D2F6688D773B6593DF82CB096034A48460D33EC
size: 3.02 GB (3,244,328,960 bytes)
size on disk: 3.02 GB (3,244,331,008 bytes)
x86 unmolested:
CRC32: 7459F27D
MD5: 5AB923831D36F3F149FFC068B2D63B72
SHA-1: 7635901AC8190BB90A596AD916DEDC185F607466
size: 2.34 GB (2,523,011,072 bytes)
size on disk: 2.34 GB (2,523,013,120 bytes)
i used hashtab
i won't bother with hashing the iso files without the ei.cfg since it'll differ from user to user
i was also seeing the "unloading the box" error only for the x64 version, since i was running win7 RC x86
anyone else want to confirm the hash? -
Hey guys,
Please excuse my ignorance, but do you use the x86 or x64 download if you want a 64bit copy of Windows 7??
Thanks for any help I look forward to hearing from you.

Once again, I'm sure this is an easy one for everyone:
I followed the instructions and when I ran the command in the 'Run Box' a little black screen flashed up and then disappeared before I could see or read it and then nothing else happened ie no ISO file.
Anyone got any ideas?
Cheers
Rusty
EDIT: I did try it twice and I did try typing and copy/pasting the comd line. -
Nevermind, I was trying to extract it into System32.
What does editing files in my System32 have to do with burning the Windows 7 download to a bootable DVD? -
i think i may be having a similar problem as ConfusedRusty.
I did everything up until here just fine:
when i run the first line, it seems to "work", but the second line says something like "can't find C:\expandedSetup"
and i don't see an Win7.iso on my C: drive...
Am i mistakenly running this as two seperately lines and it should all be typed out as one line?
PS ty for guide! i don't feel like waiting the month or so until my disks arive -
but for that second issue about not being able to find the iso, try changing the location of the final output
i changed mine to the desktop:
c:\users\m\desktop\win7x86.iso
your user name will differ, obviously, and also i named it win7x86 since i was making both versions at the time
still waiting for someone else to confirm that hash (for the unmolested, unaltered version) -
this should make the command prompt stay open on your screen
if that's not what you're talking about, ignore this comment -
Ok, looks like I successfully burned the Win7.iso onto my DVD+R. I'm about to do a clean install, but how should I manage my partitions?
My HP came with a 2.7 GB partition labeled "Recovery". Is there anyway I can keep that and just delete the partition I'm using now? -
-
-
HAHA thanks for the responses! i was typing it as two lines. All in one line worked like a charm.
I like it, but so far nothing spectacular
TY AGAIN!!! -
Thanks worked like a charm.

. However, the size of the ISOs you created matches mine exactly for both x64 and x86 versions, byte for byte.
I have also created the x86 version of the Windows 7 disk twice and even then, both their hashes differ. My guess is that oscdimg.exe creates the ISO by joining the different files in the expandedSetup folder randomly, which changes the hash.
Therefore, I think it will be more useful to generate the hashes for the downloaded files namely setup1.box, steup2.box and the extractor for both x86 and x64 versions.
