You do bring up a good point. I think the Inspiron is doing ok with the OC as it's a mild one. We'll see when I get home. But the M17x, that I won't be overclocking it. It's already doing well enough, plus I don't want it to trip the PSU because than I get no credit

Tonight I may try and set up F@h on an inspiron mini with an Atom CPU. I'm not even sure it's worth it. It might churn out 1 WU a week

 

Good point guys, I didn't know that you lose points/credits if you restart or crash. I though that it just resumed from where you last left off.

Now what I really need is to get hold of a Nvidia GPU. If only I had a pair of 580Ms

Ah what somebody has stopped my F@H running on my M18x and are now playing SIMS 3 on it. OH SIGH LOL!

AHHAh an ATOM CPU DR LOL! Yeh I'm not even sure if my CPUs are doing much work. The Credits I see in the list sometimes say like 89 and really low points.
I remember reading some where though that after processing 10 SMP WU's that you can then start to get some bonus points after that.

Yea, I read that on the folding forums and the guide I posted on the first page. So are you remoting into your M18x? Thats awesome. I need to setup so I can do that. Do you use a third party app like team viewer? Or how do you set up the remote access?

EDIT: Props to justinkw1 for modding the OP a bit. Looks sharp! If anyone wants anything on the first post let me know and I will get it updated. Always a work in progress.

EDIT 2: We've cracked the top 10K teams! Were 9364 of 207517. Lets keep it up. This makes me want to go on an NBR recruiting campaign I think I'd get mod smacked for crossposting lol. If only I had more computers. Or could fold on work computers

 

No, you don't lose credits if your computer crashes or restarts. F@H saves checkpoints automatically (for mine it's every 1% of progress) and if anything goes kaboom it will just continue from that checkpoint. I killed F@H by accident a few times before, it just continued folding and I was still credited at the end

Same here, Though I need to see how often it saves. I think I left that part on default.

 

My WUs have 50000000 steps, checkpoints are saved every 500000 steps or every 1% of progress by default. It should be the same for yours.

mine saves every 1%. For most, that's 500,000 per 50,000,000. The latest one mine is doing is 2,500 to 250,000... it's only worth 83 pts!

I have a weird feeling I'd fare better putting a 2.0GHz quadcore in my np8662.

Hey DR man,

Yeh I use an old program at work called Dameware. However we are finally moving to windows 7 soon and will be using powershell i think it is called. Other ways you can use are your teamviewer, RDP or VNC and many others depending on what you prefer. I saw that there was a way to control multiple clients somewhere on the folding forums, it may have been on your front post as well.

Well they played SIMS 3 all day lol and then watched some Blurays Oh well ahhaahah! I'll turn it back on later when it's free. At least the beastly M11x is pumping up credits as is the R2

If we fold at the rate we're going, we're going to be in the top 3,000 within a month. Notebook power FTW. From m11x's, to m18x's, to NP8662s, and everything between... I think this shows just how powerful notebook GPUs have become. The next big plateau is putting not only more cores on, but also more shaders / ROPs, which will mean cards with higher than 256-bits of bandwidth.

I'm still tweaking the first post - will do more when I have some time.

Also, I think I may have to slow down my folding - my power bill is going to spike substantially due to this and winter. I've been keeping my desktop on/off every 12 hours or so but this might hurt me financially.

On a happier note: congrats team on making it into the top 10,000!

 

Folding for me will be stopped for a short while since I'm home and can't afford to suck energy here.

 

I'm thinking about not folding for more than say 20-25 hours per week on the desktop, this way I don't end up paying the higher rates once a certain consumption threshold is reached. I'll need to look at my power bill...funny for me since I actually work for my local utility while being a customer at the same time.

I could start folding on my laptop from elsewhere - the only downside to it is that it has a GeForce GT 230M (48 CUDA cores, 1 GB GDDR3) compared to the desktop's two GTX 460s (336 CUDA cores each, 768 MB GDDR5).

 

Hey, whatever we can get... is a good thing. I'd have like to been folding on a GTX 560m with a i7-2670qm, but it won't play nice. Let the 230m loose... if it can fold, it's more than welcome. .

My Inspiron 1720 GPU keeps telling me the WU failed. Any idea how to get a new WU? It' just shows failed. Hoping the 8600M GT didn't die Keeps saying UNSTABLE_MACHINE in the log Also a Core shutdown. Hopefully it just has to do with all the system updates the system is running. The 8600M GT I guess is notorious for failures, and I've had the system since Summer of 2007. I love this 1720 and don't want it dead.

I think I know a way to get rid of the bad WU. You can try to uninstall the client. When uninstalling you will need to select the data box to get rid of the current data WU units that are currently being worked on.

The Chief is going to have a break from folding today. Time for some gaming and benching. Brother Johnksss has started a M18x leader board so the Chief must redo his benches LOL!

8600m GT is to failing as Sagers are to being overpowered: Legendary. If my mind serves me correctly, there was a class-action that resulted in just about every 8600m GT ever made being replaced. My girlfriend's MacBook Pro has this very card and we had to send in her laptop to get its 8600m GT replaced in September. (Hers had begun artifacting and I didn't want to hear "MY LAPTOP DIED!" come out of her mouth.)

Read this and if in fact the GPU is going, there WILL be some replacing going on at the cost of nVidia.

PS: and why is my points : WU so low?! surely it can't be just because it's a dualcore and not a quad or i7, no?

 

Mine runs exclusively on GPU only; I disabled SMP because it lagged my computer too badly. Maybe F@H assigns WUs based on the power of the unit processing it, so it assigns higher credit WUs to GPUs and lower credit WUs to CPUs.

 

I'll give that a shot when I get home. But it seems to complete a GPU WU in about 2 hrs.

Wow. F@H absolutely roasts my CPU, like Prime95 style. Is that normal? And how are you two building up units so quickly?

 

I have my M11x running on cpu and gpu. Same with my Inspiron 1720. My M17xR2 is going on two gpu's and the cpu. All under DR650SE. Looks like reborn has 5 systems running.

I don't have my cpu Oced more than just the bios 5% on the R2.

Thought my 1720 gpu died but it had a bad work unit. Installing and installing f@h worked to get rid of the bad Wu.

I don't know why f@h says I have 10 active clients. Should only be 7. Maybe because i got a passed later or because I uninstalled and reinstalled f@h on one system.

Aight the Chief is back up and Folding. Gotta catch up so I have OC my GPUs a heap! As if I was benching lol! Actually I was benching earlier and didn't really get anywhere so back to folding.

Just the 3 systems in my SIG are folding although I'm not sure I will keep them all going. Will see how I go this week.

Yeh DR not sure how those active client's reporting stats works. Mine and yours just seem to keep rising lol!
I did try installing it on a few ancient old artifact systems earlier but they were duds reporting back days for completion of a single WU so I just said return to sender LOL! Uninstalled.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the F@H7 client quite a number of times trying to tinker with the settings and tweaking it.
I reckon pretty soon it will be saying I have 20 active clients LOL!

Time to push on and Steam ahead. Overclocked Style! make up for lost time lol!

TurbodTalon man uninstall your clients on all 3 notebooks and then reinstall them using one username + get yourself a passkey as well. That should help you boost up the rankings and fold more WU collectively.
I did the same thing for a few days at the start 1 week back running 3 different usernames.

Hey, what does the passkey do besides allegedly give more points? I'm avging 500 pts / WU (and soon it'll be under 500 pts / WU) what's teh bonus?

Hey Jason,

That is a very good question. I think I must be getting some nice bonuses after completing so many WU's. That is the only way I can explain getting so many points for some WU's. I'm not sure how the bonuses work I will need to do some extra reading when I get the chance.
However if there is a hint of getting extra points you know that DR and I will be there LOL!

I have uninstalled all my Clients and then reinstalled them using the same Passkey. Hopefully that is correct. It seems to be working.

CMON I'm aiming to get close to 200K today LOL!

I installed Team Viewer Mobile on my Samsung Captivate Droid phone, as well as my M17x R2, M11x, and Inspiron 1720. Than I signed up for an account. DIdn't pay anything, just using it non commercially. Now I can remote access my notebooks on my smartphone How great is technology?? Now I can monitor the folding from where ever. I can use my system at home from the web or from my smartphone

EDIT: We surpassed the old Notebook review team! And with 1/3 as many WU!

I was running a version that only used a bit of CPU, but no GPU. I later switched to the beta that does use CPU and GPU, but my CPU fan is spun up pretty high all of the time. Any suggestions? Are you guys' fans running at full blast all of the time? I want to run F@H, but it doesn't seem normal to be stressing the system that much all of the time.

 

All my fans have need spinning at full speed over a week. I just keep the room closed. I have a warranty for any fan replacement

Yup 100% for CPU usage, GPU usage varies around 90% or so it does dip down a bit for me from time to time. However yes all my fans are running pretty much at full BLAST
That does annoy me sometimes so I do switch off folding but I'm getting used to it now LOL
I'm not sure how folding used to work but if I remember correctly it never used to stress everything out full 100% bore. It only used what was available in idle or something like that.

Yea if something is idle it will ue it as much as it can. Otherwise its the lowest priority.

Nope, just put the name team and passkey in the config section. Then all systems will submit work units under that single name. If i had it my way id install it to all work computers to run when idle and start on boot minimized. No one would see it and it would be folding for me Haha. That would be awesome.

920XM working at 2.66ghz across all cores and my 6970M at 800/950mhz. GPU load is only at 25% though!

yup. but if u submit ur email via the OP, you will get a passkey. Passkey is a way to get bonus points if you do 10 or more consecutive WUs. It's 32 digits, so the best means is to just copy and paste it into your settings.

Does your GPU also not get used fully? Mine runs 25-28% then for a while at 0% then it ramps back up again to 25-28% again

edit; fixed it. SMP was set too high. Taken it down to 2 now GPU can run 100%

I just got back from work to find the M18x dead! Somebody had come in to the room and done some cleaning. They knocked out the power plug. LOL
Oh well it gave it a good days rest then! It needed one after running for 1 week straight.

Time to get Folding again! Make up for lost time! OC OC OC!!!

Is Sandybridge really so much faster than 1st gen i series cpus doing this?
The exact same size WU on SMP
i7-2620 @ 3.2GHz = ~2hrs
i7-870 @ 3.06GHz = ~ 8hrs

Hmmmm I sure don't notice the speed LOL. I'm even contemplating on just disabling the SMP WU's as they are taking ages. My GPUs are the ones that are doing all the heavy lifting!
Maybe I don't have my SMP's setup right.

I just did that and the load went from 98-100% on the GPU to only 88% !!

Why would that be? Surely reducing the CPU load shouldn't affect GPU load?

I GOT THE NP8130's CPU to fold stably with 7.1.38 (no go with GPU though ). It estimates my PPD will now go up to about 17k / day!
