That is with the M8900 Firepro vbios flashed.
Thanks man, can't rep you enough.

I'm done with the mod
However, I do not know if it works in Crossfire mode. It might only work for one card and not detect the other. Also, it will only work with cards with device ID PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_6720&SUBSYS_043A1028.
Before beginning, back up your files and set a restore point in case. Also, I will not be responsible for any damage, although I'm quite sure at worst, a restore will fix any driver-related problems.
Step by step instructions
1. Download the latest AMD FirePro driver for Dell from here.
2. Unzip the files to a folder. Do not run the setup yet.
3. Download the modded files from here.
4. IMPORTANT: Unzip the modded files to the same location you unzipped the files to. For example, if you unzipped the ATI files to C:\drivers\ati, unzip the folder to C:\drivers\ati as well such that the modified Packages folder overwrites the original. Agree to overwrite ALL the original files with the modified files.
5. Install via ATI setup. You should be able to install everything. If there are any warnings about unsigned driver software (unlikely), just click OK. If you are using normal Catalyst drivers AND your computer is an M17x-R3, DO NOT uninstall the Catalyst drivers. Install the modified drivers over the Catalyst drivers.
6. Reboot. Done
- DR, please help me test these drivers, and if anyone else wishes to try it, go ahead by all means.
- I don't think you need to flash a M8900 vBios for this, the drivers should be fooled into thinking that your 6990m is a M8900 so long as the device IDs are the same (someone could help test this theory
).
- If you want your system for gaming, don't use these drivers.
- Think of these drivers as pre-release, because there might still be unforeseen bugs or issues as I don't have a 6990m to test with
Hope this worksPlease report any problems here, I'll see what I can do
Now, does any GeForce user want Quadro drivers on their computer? -
Hmm, Installation went well, GPU-Z reads them as Firepro, but now F@h isn't recognizing the second card
Started it back up and the WU failed
-
Yeah, I had guessed that the second card would not be detected. Could you try reinstalling F@H first and see if it detects and runs with both GPUs? Also, could you give me the download link for Catalyst 11.2 from CCC? It might have some bugfixes that could solve this problem.
-
i'll have to do it when I get back in town, I need to readjust my CPU, I reinstalled 11.10 over the firepro drivers. Somehow my CPU is out of wack and way to hot now
-
At least we know that modding the drivers will work for one GPU, and probably two if F@H detects the cards properly when reinstalling
-
I installed over the drivers and when I restarted it loaded to a black screen with a white frozen arrow. Rather than trouble shoot in safe made Im just reimaging my ssd. This way I can be back up and folding. Much quicker and i created the image before doing the driver install.
-
You have to remove the Firepro drivers before reinstalling Catalyst drivers because Catalyst conflicts when installed over Firepro. However, they will not conflict if you install Firepro over Catalyst.
-
Ahh ok. I don't know \ is going on with my CPU but its like the heatsink died. All of a sudden the temps have spiked with zero load after i opened it up. But i never messed with the heatsink. Aggh. No matter how I adjust it it's idling waaaay to high and this is driving me nuts. Only thing I can think of is the heatsink isn't sitting right on it.
Looks like no folding on this system for a few days at least
Calling it a night. Guess Im not going to rack up the points i thought i would over the next five days. -
Wow...look like we're really climbing the ranks - the team is now in the top 5000!
Let's keep things going! All of you are doing a great job contributing. -
Would you be able to add the device ID to desktop GPU drivers? Looks like desktop drivers use crossfire. I don't know if it's really a feasable option.
AMD CrossFire Pro -
-
True, but being that I can just reimage, I don't see it doing an permanant damage. I know in the past on my R1 we used to use modded desktop drivers. If this works, it could be greatness
I'll be out of town till Tuesday so I won't be able to do any testing. I also need to get my CPU issue sorted out.
-
If you want to, I can give it a try. I'll be out of my house until tonight, so I'll give it a shot once I'm back home.
-
Yea Im willing to risk it. If it was a bios thing then I wouldn't because the cards have no warranty, and cost too much, but drivers Im good with. No rush. I won't be home till Tuesday.

Okays, done with the desktop mod
First things first. Because this is a mod I have never done before, I cannot guarantee stability and/or performance at all. So, please make sure you have a backup of your system before even thinking of trying this. I will not be responsible if your computer dies/ explodes/ eats you/ kills the cat/ destroys the world.
This will only work with GPUs with device ID PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_6720. The subsys ID does not matter.
Step-by-step instructions
1. Download the FirePro driver here.
2. Run the executable, extract the files to a folder of your choice. When setup opens, cancel the setup.
3. Download the modified files here.
4. Unzip the folder 'Packages' to the same folder as the original such that the modified files overwrite the originals. Make sure ALL the files are overwritten.
5. IMPORTANT. Uninstall ALL AMD Mobility Radeon-related programs, including drivers, CCC, profiles, Avivo, Hydravision and Catalyst Install Manager. This can be done by uninstalling Catalyst Install Manager in Programs and Features and selecting 'Express Uninstall ALL AMD Software'. If you're feeling paranoid, run Driver Sweeper and make sure all the remnants are gone.
6. Install via setup.exe. You should be able to install everything except for HDMI Audio. You can try but I cannot guarantee it will succeed as I do not know if the device ID of HDMI Audio in the desktop FirePro cards are the same as the Mobility FirePro cards. Also, if you have CrossFire, install the profiles.
7. Reboot. Done.
These drivers are for testing only. I have not tested these drivers so wait until DR confirms they are stable and working. If anyone else wants to help and has a system with 1x 6990m, test the modded Mobility FirePro drivers here.
Also, I'm serious about Quadro drivers on GeForce cards. They are so much easier to modify than AMD FirePro drivers on Radeon cards -

Oh WOW!!!, I didnt know NBR had a folding team. Well I am switching teams here.
i am about to add 4 laptops to the NBR team
1. sager 2090 with t8300 and 8600m gt
2. elitebook 8530p with t9500 and 3650
3. m17x r1 with q9000 overclocked to 2.3 and sli 260m
4. g73jh with 920xm overclocked to 2.6 and 5870m -
Jason -
Nice tony! We started about a week and a half ago. My M17x R2 is off libel for about for more day hopefully.
-
+ (Seriously, what happened?)
Jason -
Check a few pages back. Think i have a warped heatsink. Took the system apart and didn't touch the cpu or heatsink. And now the temps are out of control.
-
WE DID IT!
Notebookreviewforums is at the VERY bottom
TOP 4000! (individual updates to follow) -
Man, JTK is going to catch me before I can get the M17x back on line
-
LOL
He can p lough through the folding like no other!
Did you get to try your other CPU yet DR?
WOOOoooooooooooo top 4000!!! Amazing Scenes!
Over 1000 WU's completed!
Close to 1 Million Points!!!
Merry XMAS everyone!
Cheers. -
Nah, had to get some sleep wed night and left town Thursday after work and won't be home till Monday night. So Tuesday is the earliest I can trouble shoot my system. So only my M11x and Inspiron 1720 will be folding till then.
-
Wow I forgot how laggy Folding make my laptop. I usually run Boinc and it never makes my laptop so laggy.
But I happy to say I got a passkey and installed on all laptops this morning. -
I should probably update my BIOS from 1.26 to see if I get any improvement. -
Great News!
(no, the dacia sandero is NOT coming to Notebook Review)

ANOTHER MILLION! CAN WE DO IT?! -
Yay I beat privatejarhead
But how do I beat justin -
I haven't been folding since the beginning of winter break. I don't want to have my family's energy bills spike, but trust me I'll be climbing up to the top soon enough when I return to campus.
-
Oh well. Sadly I can only fold for now, soon enough school starts then it will be limited to only a few hours a day
-
Its only the folding on the m17x r1 with a q9000 and sli 260m that makes it laggy. I am not going to fold on the g73 cuz amd is not very optimized for folding.

And Tony, Some like Reborn are folding with AMD cards and as you can see, the top 2 on the team have AMD cards... so they CAN fold (and fold VERY well). why not see what the 5870 can do? -
Well I made it back in town. Gotta work today, and something to go to tonight. Hopefully after that I can do some trouble shooting on my system and get back to some folding on the R2. I really need the points!
-
Uploaded the desktop FirePro drivers a few days ago, you could try those out as well. However I think you should try it before you start a new WU, just in case F@H thinks new drivers will void your WU.
-
YEa, I will definately be giving those a shot. I'm actually excited as I think they may actually work well. And Crossfire Firepro would be pretty sweet. Even if I don't really need it
I also have a hard modded over volted 6970 GPU as well that I need to bench. Just got it in the mailI need to bench it as a 6970 and as a Firepro.
Thanks a million for the driver mods. -
No problem. Hit me up if something goes awry, although I probably can't solve anything that isn't related to installation issues
I only forced them to install, didn't mess around with the actual driver files
-
lol, no worries. I have a backup image. Thats always my go to solution. I just secure erase the SSD and reimage. Beats hours of trouble shooting and takes less than half an hour
-
Okay
Nice to see someone who's actually prepared when doing experimental things
-
Check out
Turbod Talon
Go go go! Moving on up the RANKS!
Great Folding man!
DR can almost see you in his rear view mirror now lol
Great work everyone! We're closing in on the 3k mark!
Cheers. -
Well ill be folding on my 540m until I can get a new heatsink. My 540m is ttopping out T 69*C. Hopefully a heatsink solves it. Don't know how to explain it having heat issues all of a sudden. I tried another 920xm and that had the same behavior as my 940xm. At least least its not the chip. But in the mean time my system is barebones and folding for a few hours. When I get back home ill put it back together and try the modded desktop drivers.
Hmm, tried installing the desktop drivers and the display driver install failed. Not supported -
Where did it fail? Did it fail for all components or just for the display driver? Did Catalyst Control detect your GPUs and allow you to select the installable components? Use custom install, not express install.
-
Yea, it allowed me to get to where I could select components, but on the display driver it failed.
