Hey guys, which is the best RootKit removal program for x64? I know it's very, very difficult for a rootkit to install in the x64 environment, but now that I, with millions of others, am formatting my hard-disk to re-install Windows Vista along with the freshly available SP1, I'd like to take NO chances. Please let me know!

    Thanks!

    Hi everyone,

As your all running x64 I was wondering if any of you have found that since installing that your card reader no longer works with MemorySticks? In Vista Home 32bit my card reader had no issue with MemorySticks but now, even though they are detected and shown in Explorer Vista says it can't read them. I get a 'Please insert memory stick into g:' message.

I did a search and found that someone on a 64bit system had issues with memory sticks but nothing on here. I'm wondering if it's an o/s issue - something to do with the way it tries to read the format..

Really want to squash this one as it's pretty much my only remaining problem to solve with x64.

    Thanks in advance.

Have you tried different drivers? Its most likely the drivers that make the card reader function

That is a good idea but I'm not sure where to find different drivers for it to be honest. I am using the x64 drivers from Dell at the moment but would try others if I can find them. I went to the Ricoh site but couldn't see an obvious download path. Worth a try though.
Wouldn't mind hearing from anyone here who is running the x64 drivers on a Dell and not having issues with MemorySticks.

Wanna try mine? Im using a Ricoh reader aswell, if its the same model it might work. I can give you a direct link to hp's driver page

Youd be suprised. Right now im using Acer webcam drivers flawlessly because the HP one is completely screwed up

Yeah, I wouldnt mind having a go with your drivers. Any idea what version of card reader you have in your HP? Yours works with Sony MemorySticks fine then on x64?

I just installed Vista 64 last night, and I have a piece of advice to offer that I wish someone would've told me:

The driver cd that came with my laptop had Vista 64 drivers for every piece of hardware in my laptop. Running a full install of the driver cd, sans all the useless Asus apps, everything runs smooth and no "unidentified hardware" in the device manager. So far so good.

But for people looking for drivers I would check that cd first, as I spent a good deal of time scouring the net trying to find drivers when everything was right there in front of me.

    Cheers

here is better advice, never ever use the driver CD, by the time that CD is made, your computer shipped there are revised drivers out already

Just curious if you guys know - I "thought" I was buying a HP 9700t with Untimate 64-bit (only a $60 upgrade from Home Prem) and I went ahead and ordered a Vista 64-bit disc from digital river. Then the next day, the 9700t was no longer a deal and now I have a Dell 1720 on the way with 32-bit. I am thinking of moving to 64-bit with a clean install but was curious if anyone knew - do ALL of the discs you buy for $12.99 - or $15 in the case of Ultimate - include all version of Vista and your key unlocks the appropriate version?

Gonna post on the Dell forum to see who has done 64-bit on the 1720, but after reading here, it seems like there is no downside for me.

You're right, a Vista DVD contains all the versions of Vista in it, and the key unlocks the corresponding version.

Great! I have a HP desktop with Home Premium on it that I want a copy for also. Funny - they charge $3 more for Ultimate - guess that pretty black box costs more. :D

Follow this advice loosely, just b/c they work with your current system, doesn't mean they will be compatible with something like say Vista SP1.

    Regarding SP1.....

Has anyone found a valid reason to make the jump as of yet in the 64Bit OS? I haven't heard anything yet that makes it worth jumping into.

    Convince me will ya!

I would try SP1 but I cant partly because it will not show up in my windows updates, I don't want to download the full package from the website and mainly because I constantly read conflicting reports, some say it improves performance where as others say it decreases it in some areas.

Hence I am also interested in the views of members

I've heard positive, neutral and negative things about SP1 for x64. I have my Vista Ultimate x64 running rock solid, after 3 months now. I see no reason to update.

Although, I'm ready to take one for the team! I'm going to re-install the OS from scratch in about 10 minutes. I'll report back tomorrow at about the same time, because I have so many softwares to install, and so many settings to take care of, not to mention scan my notebook with 4-5 anti-crapware softwares after updating them. And then run PerfectDisk 2-3 times! So it'll take some time. See you all, and here's hoping it all works out fine! :D

It has all worked fine till now! :D Right now, I have just finished the first pass of PerfectDisk, and there are about 3-4 more to go, and then I'll use my notebook.

In the meanwhile, while I was installing my softwares, I was browsing the Internet for BlackViper's SP1 service settings for optimal performance, which has worked absolutely perfect for me for many years, but somehow, and I don't know how, I messed with some service and now my Wireless USB (which I am using right now on my PC, hence is fine) modem won't work on the notebook. I will probably need help in finding out how to reset it to make it work, so be ready! :D

Or there will be hell to pay for.

I don't know if this is the right place to ask this question or not, so please don't you all jump on me if it isn't. I have been researching x64 for a few months now and, as you all can imagine, the issue of drivers comes up over and over and over again. It's actually quite annoying now because that's the first thing out of anyone's mouth whenever I start to talk about wanting to get x64. The problem with drivers can't possibly be as prevalent this late in the game as people are trying to get me to believe. I read a lot on this forum about people going to different websites checking for drivers and that also confuses me a little. So, my question is really two questions: 1) Is the driver issue really that prevalent? 2) Does Microsoft now provide drivers for x64 on their website? If they're going to offer their operating systems in x64, why wouldn't they have all the necessary drivers listed on their website? Why would they cause people to have to search for drivers on other sites?

    1..NO
    2...YES

You need to search for different drivers because many relate to your hardware, not OS or software. For example, you need to search out your UPEC fingerprint reader 64 bit software.

All drivers are available on x-drivers.com, dell.com or from Intel/MS.

    Drivers are simple to find...

Thank you, Les. This has really calmed me down just a little. I have to be honest in saying that some of the driver talk was really beginning to annoy and discourage me just a bit. I really am trying not to see any reason to avoid x64 when I order my machine.

Drivers for x64 isnt that hard to find. Most laptop manufacturers support x64 now so you just have to download the drivers on their site. x64 is getting alot of support now because it is the future. My transition to x64 went quite smoothly.

Im having more of a problem with SP1 drivers. Stupid Conexant drivers is stopping me from updating to SP1

Question: Are the folders that come in the Program Files(x86) directory necessary? For example. Vista uses the x64 versions of wmp and photo viewer, so aren't all the ones in the x86 redundant and useless?

They are...except some web plugins are not x64 compatible (or rather the x64 version of IE)...I believe Flash is one of them, so that's why they still exist, b/c the x64 version is NOT fully functional.

...remind me why you're using IE again? :p

Idk, theres a 64 bit version on apple.com...at least the 32 bit one should be able to be installed? I've been listening to the same songs that are on my ipod for quite a while now. I performed a clean install, and today I was free, I figured I'd rebuild my library and add a few new tracks since I backed up all my songs on my ext hard drive. this sucks.

Edit: ok seems like a reboot of my computer started the installer. But when I installed the 64bit version, it installed in the (x86) program files folder?

Yeah, it's stupid harp, I don't think it's a native x64 program, a lot of software companies will proclaim "x64"!!! To get people to ooh and aah, when all it really means to them is that it will run in x64. (...I could be wrong, but that seems to be my observation).

Hey guys - my 1720 is shipping and I am gonna go ahead and clean install 64-bit. I have located all of the drivers thanks to those who did all of this way before me. I am going to follow Les's/Doubleback's procedure with a Vista 64-bit disc and sub'ing a USB drive for the drivers disc to get the Intel Matrix disc controller driver loaded. One question - the nVidia driver that seemed to work well for the video card in 64-bit was 169.09. Is that still the best? I see that 169.25 is out.

the best for your Dell is 174.31 64bit from "mobileforce"

(just testing myself on COD4 so far, but great IQ and performance)

Also, as with the newer nvidia releases, supports software GPU overclocking with nvidia ntune plugin
(but must have a standard, non unlocked GPU bios, see support docs)

    http://www.notebookforums.com/forum304.html

*Dell has 64bit drivers up on their site (its complete for my M90 now anyway, wasn't recently)
