Anyone try StartUpLite for W7?
This is free from Malwarebytes. I cut my boot up time by half with zero problems during the last month. Anyone find any downside or problems? -
That's a lot of work with some saying no change. StartUpLite is automatic and painless..so far. My Tosh is getting close to same start times than my asus with Momentus XT. I have not, will not install this on the XT until i get off my duff and see what Startuplite is all about. Thx.

Here is my favorite screen recording application free of course.
Amarecco
This is English page
My post about this on another forum site.
http://stream-recorder.com/forum/another-freeware-screen-capture-software-hard-find-t8330.html
There are a couple of new plugins on the the main site (japanese site part) that I haven't tested yet but you can just put them into the plugin folder of the installation and try them out yourself. This program has tons of options, let me know what you all think. This program can just record about anything you got on your screen even videos with sound and games! Let me know if anybody needs the best profile for recording I can post screenshots of mine.

Just wanted to comment that this list is really really great and thanks to the people who keep it up to date. It's hard to cut through the garbage on the web with all the software packages that sneakily charge or the free products that don't run well. This thread is basically my go-to resource on the internet anytime I have a software need and it has saved me a lot of time and frustration
I don't see any VPN clients (free or otherwise) on that list. I guess I can just use the built-in Windows 7 features? Thanks! -

VPN connections are mainly for protecting our privacy and identity online. There are loads of VPN providers to choose from. You can use the free PPTP or OpenVPN service from VPNBook.com. As PPTP client is included in most operating systems and OpenVPN is an open source project, no propriety software is needed.

REDO backup - bare metal backup- Redo Backup and Recovery | Free Security & Utilities software downloads at SourceForge.net - Very basic backup + restore. It was able to backup + restore data files that Paragon 2014 Failed to do.
BUT- It appear development may have stopped http://sourceforge.net/p/redobackup/discussion/1169663/thread/abddcd8b/ in 2012
Still I use it as a secondary method of backup and just used 1.0.4 to successfully restore Bodhi Linux on my Dell -

Dimmer - Screen brightness reduction utility for LCD/TFT/LED monitors
John.
Dimmer

Description
Dimmer is a little free application designed to help control the brightness of your computer screen, specially to help reduce the brightness beyond what the hardware alone is capable of. This becomes very useful when you are in total darkness and the minimum brightness from your display is still too much. It can dim LCD, TFT and LED screens. Dimmer will not damage your screen, if anything, it will save the backlight and consequently, energy, by emitting less radiation. To note is the fact that most desktop screens are actually capable of reducing the brightness levels quite low, the same is not true on 95% of portable screens. Dimmer was conceived to work on all versions of Microsoft Windows.
The need for this program came about because I do allot of work at night and with minimum ambient light in the room, or (more often than I would like) in bed and my laptop (all of them) still output a great deal of light even in the lowest setting, this was damaging to my eyes and I couldn't work well. So one day I decided to develop Dimmer and solve the problem. I can now dim the laptop display to suit my needs and can finally work through the night without a problem. Your monitor brightness can be easily adjusted and the program sits in the system tray for your convenience.
Another convenient feature is that the program does not require installation. Simply extract into a folder of your choice and run. When no longer needed, just delete the folder and you are done. The program stores its settings in an xml file so the Windows Registry is not used. Dimmer options can only be accessed from its icon on the system tray (next to the clock). When it loads it will dim up to the level it was last used. The option to close/exit is in the context menu that you get by right-clicking on the system tray icon.Click to expand...James D and turqoisegirl08 like this. -

Useful for students who need a bit of help on their science and mathematical analysis.
Microsoft Mathematics 4.0
"Microsoft Mathematics provides a set of mathematical tools that help students get school work done quickly and easily. With Microsoft Mathematics, students can learn to solve equations step-by-step while gaining a better understanding of fundamental concepts in pre-algebra, algebra, trigonometry, physics, chemistry, and calculus.
Microsoft Mathematics includes a full-featured graphing calculator that’s designed to work just like a handheld calculator. Additional math tools help you evaluate triangles, convert from one system of units to another, and solve systems of equations."
Best thing of all this Microsoft supported application is freeware and is compatible from Windows XP SP3 to the current Windows.Azazello likes this. -

If you use Handbrake for video conversion and need to batch convert Animi mkv or other video`s and need to burn-in the english subtitles handbrake will only do them one at a time, i dont know why.
I found this program called THandBrake and it`s a GUI for handbrake that allows you to batch convert videos with subtitles in batch mode
EDIT: One nice feature is you can compress a video to a specific file size, the default is 100mb.

Have you ever felt instant turning off your monitor when you want to go somewhere so it would save power but never wanted to change power plans for that? Or just like to keep it blank when you go away but don't like when it dimms in front of you when you still sit?

I found a response about this little program called Monitor Off.
Download standalone version in ZIP container and you can use it for both: display-off by key-combo and display-off when doubleclick tray icon with timer.
1. Autoload program with display off when doubleclick: copy program in any folder like C:\PortableApps\Monitor Off\ and setup accordingly;
View attachment 123460
2. Display-off by key-combo: same what is above where Ctrl+Alt+L as example.
3. Display-off by key-combo + pranking with M$ if you don't use another display/projector: put another copy of program elsewhere (like Windows\System32 and rename to DisplaySwitch.exe), check "Save settings in program folder" and setup accordingly but with out Autostart with Windows.
If you chose to prank M$ then anytime you press Win+P it will display off your display in couple seconds.
Most important... such complicated way still doesn't make any interactions!

CleanMem is a free/paid memory optimizer, according to the writeup it uses windows own memory optimizing function, just more effectively.
The desktop monitor and schedule is a paid function $4.99 but the optimizer works just as effectively without it.
I am using this om my Win8.1 Atom Tablet, that only has 2GB of non upgradable memory.

I don't know if this neat little program was mentioned here before, but if you want to remap some keys on your keyboard, Sharpkeys/']https://sharpkeys.codeplex.com/]Sharpkeys[/url] is capable of doing it.
I wanted to have dedicated previous track, play/pause, next track keys on T100, so I used this program and voila, it works!
