I want to share a application I found.

It's kinda like NetStumbler but it scans access point, show signal strength and other useful information.

    inSSIDer
    http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider

    And its FREE!

I vouch for both on Vista and Xp. The websites explain more. Cygwin does need a bit of configuring but the site documentation is good.

I also vouch for revoinstaller and inSSIDer.

Thanks for the add! I tried it out quickly (and TESTED it), and it's a simple tool to monitor signal strength for laptops.

Ch28Kid, I just tested it and it worked fine. If you tested it, would you like me to add your name as one of the testers for this app in the list?

    hey dbam

Microsoft Windows XP Power Toys Microsoft has several tweaking applications here for Windows XP (they will likely work in Vista as well without problems) (Added January 6, 2009)

the above i think will not work with vista.

as quoted from the website; Note: We take great care to ensure that PowerToys work as they should, but they are not part of Windows and are not supported by Microsoft. For this reason, Microsoft Technical Support is unable to answer questions about PowerToys. PowerToys are for Windows XP only and will not work with Windows Vista.

    MZ CPU Accelerator

Official site has lots of other free programs.

Mz CPU Accelerator is an application that automatically changes the priority of the foreground window, by allocating more CPU power to the currently active application (program-game). Automatically de-allocates CPU priority when a new active application is selected. Also, new version contains an option that manages the cores of your processor!
It works on any version of Windows.

    Just use msconfig for that...

Press (Windows Key) + R, type in "msconfig" (without the quotes), then go to the "startup" tab and uncheck whatever you don't want starting up when your computer starts.

    Use the Revo Uninstaller

Under tools there is Autorun Manager which is really nice. Also you can right click on the start up google it quickly without typing the weird names. You can also delete it from list so it doesn't show up on msconfig.

I love whoever recommend Revo Uninstaller. Best App ever!

    Cool add, Thanks J&SinKTO!

I listed it in the Productivity/Office section.

Having an application like that handy would be nice. It leads me to this idea, where I'll have a list on the top of the thread that lists app types that people are looking for that are not in the main list. People can then look at that and some might have insight on an application that does it.

Thanks! It's a community based thread really, so the thanks should go out to everybody who's contributed.

I have one neat addition to your "save hdd space" section:

go to the cmd program and type "vsp1cln.exe" without the " "s.
This is a Vista SP1 removal tool used to remove some pre-sp1 backup files. Once this command is run, you cannot revert back to a pre-sp1 system (I don't see why most people will want to downgrade). This will save you (at least it did for me) about 1 gig.

Hello guys, after looking at the price of Norton Ghost, I decided to search for free alternatives first that is as good.

I came across various of websites and this one has most of the free alternatives that I came across listed.

    What I want to know is;

    # There's this "Back up the whole hard drive" and "Back up the whole partition". As my hard drive only consist of one main partition, so in theory they make no difference right?

    # Which of the listed (or not listed) free alternatives you came across that is as good as Norton Ghost?

    # Is Norton Ghost superior in this field and I should just give up and pay the money?

My needs are simple, schedule back up or any other extra features are not necessary. Top priority is just to completely clone my whole hard disk into DVDs and able to restore from them.

Although I don't mind paying, the software itself cost me a quarter of my part time job salary (Yet I'm so willing to ditch out my money for games  ). So any help/suggestion will be much appreciated, thank you for your time :D .

It seems no one has mentioned these codecs yet, and I've forgotten to mention them too.

    Quicktime Alternative
A codec replacement for Quicktime for Windows (which is necessary for iTunes to function). With Quicktime Alternative, Quicktime is no longer necessary for iTunes to function - certainly a boon for Windows iPod-users. :)

    Real Alternative
A codec replacement for Real Media Player, which is a nuisance.

These two codecs will allow you to play any Quicktime or Real Media file in Windows Media Player (or Media Player Classic, if you choose to install it). After installation, no fuss necessary - just double-click a file to open, and it will open in Windows Media Player without issue.

    I just remembered some stuff...
(sorry if I name something already in the list)

Ghostview - PS and pdf file viewer - mainly PS - quite light - a registration window does pop up, but there is no need to register (think it has been replaced by GSview...)
Ghostscript - needed for ghostview I think... part of the whole "TeX" package

MikTeX - a derivative of TeX for Windows, very powerful for creating pdfs...
An editor to use with it (which has been in Beta ever since) - TeXnics Centre

Excellent! Added them to the list.

    Cool adds! Thanks!

Yep! It's an awesome codec pack to have.
