Yep, happens to Powerpoint as well. It's in Vista as well, it's just that you don't notice it since the Thumbnails are useless in Vista and are barely used. Hopefully they fixed it in Office 2010.

Thanks guys for pointing it out. Interesting...Office 2007 was supposedly optimized for Vista, but this problem has been there all along.

I don't seem to have this problem. Both Excel and Powerpoint 2007 give me live preview from the taskbar.

Only if one file is open. If you have more than 1 excel or PowerPoint file, the preview disappears and is replaced by excel or PowerPoint's icons.

Don't open 2 Excel files by clicking on the Excel shortcut twice because that will open up 2 instances of Excel and it's fine. But try this, open one instance of Excel, then do Ctrl+N to make a new spreadsheet, that should replicate the bug or try it with PowerPoint.

    Yep, that did it.

I never noticed that before. Hopefully they got it fixed in 2010.

Windows 7 problem on Quadra Core

I installed Windows 7 on two systems, one is on Dual core system and the other is on Quadra core system. Its running fine on dual core which got only 512 MB Ram and is much faster. But where as in my Quadra core system with 4 GB Ram. Its taking a lot of time for the system to start and also to install any software into the system. Is it a problem with graphics card or drivers?

Is anyone else getting the very annoying effect where an app (like WMP or Photo Viewer etc) opens underneath the explorer window you've opened it from, so you then have to switch to it yourself, or close the explorer window to get it out of the way. Anyone got a fix for it so the opened app takes focus?

EDIT: THIS ONE IS OBJECTDOCK'S FAULT APPARENTLY, IT HASN'T BEEN UPDATED TO W7 YET

Does anyone else have difficulties getting the icon display settings in the notification tray to stay? I have probably changed the settings (under 'Customize') two dozen times to always show the device icon when I plug in my USB drives and as soon as I restart, the setting is back to before and I have to change it again.

No issue here... are you sure you set your system tray icon to "show icon and notification", and you hit on the OK button of the panel?
Also, do you use any cleaner software... if you do, they might run at startup or made a task schedule script, to clear yoru system of left over crap, but for some reason decides to clean Windows saved settings.

Yep, I always show icon and notification. It will appear then in the tray for the time being until the next time I restart.

I have a corporate version of Norton Antivirus running because I have to, but I don't think that would do it. It isn't with any other system settings, just the icon notifications.

My LCD back light is not shutting off when the screen goes blank. Vista had this problem and I was hoping for it to be fixed in 7. Windows XP and all previous OSes always worked to turn off the screens.
What is different about Vista & 7 that they do not?

1st Prob: I installed the latest version of Windows Live Messenger and assigned it to start up automatically when windows start (only to pop-up the window not to automatically sign in), but sometimes it don't start and show me the window "Windows Live Messenger has stopped working & need to be closed". So i have to start it manually.

2nd Prob: Sometimes some of Windows Gadgets in the Side Bar don't appear and when I right-click on the desktop and click on "Gadgets" nothing open up, and when i try to right click on the Gadgets in the Side Bar and click "Add Gadgets" nothing happen too, it's completely doesn't respond. I have to restart my laptop in order to get it to work.

3rd Prob: My Copying/Moving Transfer Speed is low from one of my two partition to the other ( C:, D: ), It starts with 40mb/second and ends up with 20mb/second. I Defragged & optimized my harddisk twice and still the same prob. My Specs is in the sig (500GB Toshiba HDD 8mb Cash and 5400 RPM)

My Laptop is 1 week old btw

Thank u for ready, waiting for u reply...

Did you install Logitech Webcam software? I know that one old version screws up all Windows 7 extra software like Live Message and Gadgets Make sure you have the latest version of that software where all this is fixed. If you don't have that software, it could be another one (I aim at HP crappy software)

Also, make SURE you have the latest drivers from the manufacture (example, if your laptop have a Geforce 9500M, go at Nvidia website to get it's drivers and NOT from HP... Of course, some hardware and all the HP software will only be on HP website).

That is normal and not a problem, it is the actual reason why I do not partition my drives anymore.
(well, at least not a fixable problem)

Between two drives you have full speed of the drives available, first one reads and second one writes all the time. Transferring between two partitions in one drive, part of file is first read into cache and then written to the other partition. That results in much more work for the single drive and you see it as lower performance.

I have all the latest drivers installed and all windows updates, I even yesterday unchecked some of the start up app. to get the gadgets to work and msn and still nothing happened. But the fishy thing is that sometimes I start my laptop with everything working beautifully and the other time it bugs with the errors I mentioned

So this is the normal speed for my Hard Drive and RAM, I expected more....

Also remember as it reads the file it then must move the heads to write, then move again to read some more the move back to write again so seek times apply too..............

Task button thumbnails are not available sometimes. When it happens, two task buttons glow: one is the active window and the other is the last button the pointer hovered over.

The only solution I've found is terminating explorer.exe and relaunching it. This issue happens only occasionally but it is annoying.

You have a software that confuses explorer. I know Winamp does it (also affected Vista), as they built-in sooo many workarround to all XP bugs, it screws up with newer Windows. It's basically bad programming from their part.

Most of the time, but not always. But I assume there is still something loaded in the memory. A restart, solves the problem. However, sometimes I can use Winamp for several hours and never encounter it. I know it's Winamp at 100%, because when I simply don't load it for months, I don't have that problem anymore. And as soon I start using Winamp to listen to mu music, the problem start to appear very frequently.

Uninstall Windows Live and all it's components, and reinstall it:
Here is a link to download it again: http://download.live.com/

    Hxh, try this.
Open the Task Manager, go to "Processes" tab, and kill (End Process) everything you can from your account. Just close it all that you can.

Now, try to run your Windows gadgets and Windows Live Messenger, and see if it runs properly.

I am sure it's a software that is very badly programed, which conflicts with other stuff such as, in you case, Windows Live Messenger and Gadgets.

    Point being?

Okay, seriously now. I understand exactly what you mean, since I suffered the same maladies right after I updated to W7 in November. Since then, I've gotten all those bugs too, and although they're small and easily correctable, collectively having to do it continuously, makes W7 a not so great experience.

I also keep getting this pop up window saying Access to that program is Restricted, all on it's own from my security suite. Wonder what that means?

I'll try this solution GoodBytes. My point Krane is that this bug occurred right after I bought my laptop, I didn't even installed all the programs I use, what I had was HP Bloatware programs (also uninstalled a lot of them with v3loc1ty2.0 Out of the box guide) and I installed Google Chrome, Skype, Windows Live, Daemon Tools, WinRaR, VLC player, CCcleaner, A Defrag tool and a couple more that's it...

Maybe some has same problems than me

    - when I put my laptop to sleep with usb mouse still in usb and then i dsconnect mouse it wakes up again. (that was not happening on winXP) (same happens to my friends 8510p)
    - when using docking station on my 8510p and mouse and keyboard plugged in it mouse and keyboard freeze for a second or two every half a minute.

there is no new drivers for chipset on HP homepage and docking station does not have any drivers at all.

Ok i know this is more hardware thing but still happens only in w7

No issue like this on any of my systems.

PLEASE ensure that you have the latest and official drivers for your system form the manufacture, this include your motherboard. Also ensure that you have the latest BIOS installed on your system. See the motherboard manuafcture or system builder company to get the latest BIOS.

Also, it could be a BIOS option. XP is VERY SUPER old Operating system, it doesn't support a lot of stuff form today. Maybe some features from the BIOS it did not support hence you did not have the "problem" even though it's probably a feature.

Try updating your BIOS like Krane told you, I had the famous problem when I plug in the AC adapter the battery don't charge even if it's not full or 50% left "Plugged in, Not Charging" after updating the BIOS from HP website I didn't encounter this problem again for now

thank you guys. Had to go in vista section on HP page to get latest BIOS and it fixed few thing like laptop not freezing after wake up on battery if it was put on sleep on ac or unplugged from ac when working. And that mouse waking computer is win7 feature :) can be disabled in Device manager -> Mouse -> Properties -> Power Management.

I still had that ancient BIOS that fixed ati bsods back in the day :)

mouse and keyboard are still freezing when plugged in docking station :( have to find some driver for that

Does anyone have issues running dual monitors with a dell dock? I just setup my work machine the other day and whenever I lock the machine the secondary monitor will just go black like it is turned off. Not a huge deal but I used to like to see my backrounds.

Your problem is not Windows 7 related but rather crappy codecs that you use, that has fun with your mouse settings.

1- Uninstall ALL codec packs you use.
2- User CCleaner (free), and clean out the registry.
    3- Restart your computer.
4- Use Shark007 codec pack (free, crappy website design, but the best codec pack for Vista and Windows 7 32/64-bit).
    32-bit (install first): http://shark007.net/win7codecs.html
    64-bit: http://shark007.net/x64components.html
5- Once both are installed in order, open the start menu, go to Shark007 Codecs folder, and open Settings Application x64 as Administrator. Once done, go to the Config tab, and click on "set 64-bit player". This will unlock Windows Media Player 12 64-bit edition, so that you get to use the 64-bit codecs. This codec pack can play virtually any formats. Also, it does NOT interfere (the only codec pack that is designed that way) with Windows 7 built-in codecs.
6- Use Windows Media Player 12 64-bit from now on for for your video needs. You'll like it! :D

    Enjoy!
P.S: if you are on a laptop, and use your 64-bit codec you can save battery life, as it is easier for the CPU to decode videos, and DVD's.

Got a bug/glitch. Everytime I let my computer go to screen saver, and I get back from screen saver, it becomes unresponsive. Nothing will open or close. Sometimes it just freezes. I turned off screensaver and set it to not dim the lights or turn off the screen when its idle. But it still happens.

    Works here fine.
You can pin items on your task bar, which is teh same as the quick launch bar.

I got a weird problem this morning and noticed it persisted. Whenever the computer "dims the display" the processor locks itself at 100% until the computer goes to sleep or someone presses a key/moves the mouse (to un-dim the display). I thought it was a problem with the power options but I have spent all day going through them and don't see what could be doing it.

Sounds like there may be a driver issue.

Check to be sure you GPU, chipset and other drivers are up to date. If that doesn't work, try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers. Remember to restart after each uninstall, and after each install.
