Jst upgraded to Win 7 Ult from vista HP.
Norton anti virus 2009 Gaming edition has minor issues with Win7 so i removed it.

switched to Avira Free Ed. Avira works fine with Win7.

For anyone feeling courageous, MSFT Security Essentials beta is very stable on my 7 RC and works well. Don't ask me how effective it is though.

Been using microsoft security essentials since the beta came out and I'm liking it so far. It is not intrusive and runs on a very small footprint. Haven't had any warnings so far but I guess that's a good thing? :D

When using beta anti-virus software, it's always good to have a back-up program, lol. Avira indeed runs well. I'm sure most would, unless the program inherently has problems with 64-bit systems.

    Microsoft Security Essentials Beta
    or nothing.

I love Microsoft Security Essentials, as it's really fast, gets the job done, very light on your system you don't even feel it running. Plus, it is not annoying, user friendly interface, doesn't bug you, and you have all the features you may need for a home PC.

The best part is that it's based on the OneCare which is a pretty dam good A/V, contrary to popular believes (check our reviews... it's downside was that it was not worth the value Microsoft was selling it at). AND it's FREE (even the official version)

Oh and it's available in 64-bit just to make things smoother and faster on your system.

Only one downside is MSE doesn't update it's malware definitions everyday by itself, but relies upon Windows Update, and Windows Update notifies MSE's definition update as a recommended update (not important update which installs automatically).

I personally use Nod32 - smart security edition and had 0 issues.
I also have Spybot installed (although I use it quite rare due to the fact that I only scan once per month or once in 2 months time).

Yeah, it's beyond me as to why def updates for MSE are "recommended" and not "important". My guess is because it's in beta still so hopefully the released version will have them classified as important. That's my only complaint about MSE.

I remember this one time AVG singled out this .dll file from the windows booting process.
Through an update it started recognizing it as a threat and it put it in quarantine.
Little did I know that the next day after booting up my system windows wasnt able to start due to that missing file.. I nearly lost my desktop back then.

Since that day i cursed AVG and it entire family tree.

ot: i, currently looking into a good AV, thats why im here.
Demands are that it must be user friendly, non-corrupted amateuristicely like AVG, and musnt slow down my system. I used to use SOPHOS. Liked it untill they took my 'borrowed' license away.. lol

If you don't want to pay, Microsoft Security Essentials is your winner IMO, but if you don't mind shelling out the green, then definitely go for Norton Internet Security 2010 (I'm using it now).

That would be a huge violation of privacy if they were sending back that type of information...

But don't think that means they wouldn't do it. Maybe when you accept the Terms for the installation or something you are agreeing to letting them send back information.

If you are using MSE, just use a packet sniffer to see whats being communicated.

If m$ want that they wouldn't need to build that in to an av ..
It could be coded in to system files.
    So it's a fake info.
And max they could know is ip address .. not like paying for os with cc or with anything anyways :p since like .. dos

From what I understand, Symantec Endpoint Protection is the successor to Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition. I used the AV Corp Edition before when I had XP and Vista and it was a fine AV and to me Endpoint is the same solid AV, unlike the Norton bloatware. My dad's company uses it which is how I am able to get a legitimate version of it and it has worked for them so far.

So do you think you can be more specific as to why it is "crap"?

Just need an antivirus that works fine in the background and can forget it, symantec corp av. did that.
Don't need all in one .. just like nero and many other went that way .. now they are crapware and most ppl replacing them.

I'm using Avast. It does pretty well up against other AV's in the av-comparatives.org tests.

I also like how there's different scanners for the different type of scanning, for the web, instant messaging, network, etc. Each that can be disabled/enabled depending on what you're doing.

Go read Av-Comparatives.org please people and stop recommending Norton, McAfee, and any other crappy programs.

People that are liking Norton 2009, you have no idea how many computers at work I get with Norton 2009. It is horrible. I have to say lately all the virus infected machines I've been fixing have some version of Norton... inlcuding the acer I had yesterday with 2009 on it.

So Norton fails. Oh and it just so happens when I uninstall it and put something better on... it just happens to run faster :)

So Norton FTL, personally Avira always gets top results on Av-Comparatives, and though I don't like Microsoft Essentials... its not too bad.

    The free one?

I use Norton it's rated either 1st or 2nd consistently in every publication I've checked for the past three years. And it's got a snazzy new interface that simple and easy to navigate. It ain't cheap, but it's non-intrusive and offers great overall protection.
