Right. Any known issues with the previous build? (I remember you saying that tool was buggy)
In typical Windows fashion my system is going to s--t after a couple months (had this happen in Win 7 too). I was thinking about yet another install and wondering if I should just revert to my post-install Macrium backup or start from scratch with your new build.
Or maybe I should just d/l that tool myself, make a bloat-free 1607 build, and adopt Mr. Fox's "better dead than up to date" policy.

The 2 issues I had with the previous build was the inability to login to the Windows Store and sometimes random crashes of certain apps running in the background. This one has 0 issues, literally.

I suggest you format your taptop ASAP, install Windows, configure it to your liking, also run O&O ShutUp10, move your personal user libraries (docs, music, pics, etc.) to a folder of your username in D: then create an image using Macrium Reflect before installing any drivers/software. That way when things get bad in the future or there are many driver updates, you can go to a clean state within a couple of minutes and start fresh again but with most of the hard work done.

That's what I was referring to when I mentioned the Macrium backup - I pretty much follow your clean install guide point by point.
I've never logged into the Windows store so I can't confirm or deny that problem. Random crashes… I thought that was a feature of Windows. The most annoying problem I'm running into currently is my wifi will go MIA and I'll need to reset the network card (never touched the wifi drivers since install). Other problems include flashing screen brightness (I think this is power management related) and the shut down screen doesn't have the rotating ball animation anymore - go figure.

Speaking of drivers… is there any reason not to use the MS drivers? <ducks for cover>
I'm not talking about video or sound, those I'll use the version I damn well want. But wondering about the rest. I've never noticed any change using the Synaptic touchpad drivers Acer offers (not even extra settings). I have no idea if network drivers are any better than what MS offers - I've never noticed any improvement between the ancient Acer drivers and the most up to date OEM versions.
I guess basically I'm wondering if its really worth spending the time installing those drivers (either from Acer or UTD OEM) or just let MS deal with them

Firstly, try to avoid Windows Drivers as much as possible. Whilst they have improved a lot over the past. Your OEM drivers are always the best provided that they actually keep their drivers updated. You see what I've done here, I always keep the MSI Drivers up to date by grabbing drivers from other models that I am sure are compatible. Many drivers are cross compatible like Intel Chipset, IRST, Intel Management Engine Interface, Wireless Drivers, etc. The only ones that you must figure out really are the sound and touchpad drivers and / or any system utilities for your laptop.

See: MSI GT75 TITAN Drivers (8th gen)

For the WiFi disconnection issue, tell me your WLAN Card and driver version.

For the brightness issue, I don't have an idea, but one of the tweaks that I do in Winaero Tweaker is to disable Power Throttling:

    2019-01-09_222617.jpg

As for the brightness issue, there was an issue with the brightness dimming down automatically upon reboot but that was fixed with the latest Windows Updates. It's worth taking a look at this manual fix though:

Most of the drivers I'm running are 2015/2016 vintage. Pretty much when Acer stopped supporting my particular model. On my previous Windows build I was using as many drivers from the vn7-593g (I have a vn7-592g) as possible, but even those were getting pretty old. I'm not sure what Acer has replaced these models with now.

My wifi is an Qualcomm Atheros QCA61x4A. Driver version: 12.0.0.191. I'm pretty sure the card is junk in the first place, but I don't know if I'd be keeping this laptop long enough to justify replacing it - but I have thought about it.
IIRC this disconnect problem has happened before and a clean install fixed it.

I did have that brightness bug and it was the one thing that the MS patches did fix. On another thread somebody mentioned a bug where their colour profiles would flash when a device is plugged in. I have basically the same thing, just brightness. Usually a shutdown/reboot fixes it. As long as I remember to shutdown at the end of the day…

I haven't done the monthly update just yet, who knows maybe something will take this time <I almost manged to type that without laughing>

You WiFi driver is from the Dinosaur Age.

Download this ZIP, unblock the file before unzipping it by right clicking on it > Properties > unblock from the bottom right then hit APPLY then OK

After you unzip the folder, go to device manager and try updating your WLAN Card by pointing it to that folder.

    Latest LAN & Wireless Drivers

Oh and do the Windows update for the love of God. the OS at the time of its release was riddle with bugs and you're still running it like this? I'm surprised you actually made it this far without updating :D

Thanks, I'll give those drivers a try.

I meant updating this month (I'm current at 17763.194). I did get the Dec. updates thinking it would fix my NAS connections. The joke was on me.

    Cheers.

Can I enable WinDef back after I install this version? And what are the general senses that advice against having it enabled? o_O
Also, can I just install this version as a "Windows upgrade" from my old Windows installation as well?

    KB4476976 Windows 10 1809 17763.288 (manual download) in the RP ring Deskmodder.com | Jan 11, 2019

Briefly noted. Microsoft has released a new cumulative update for Windows 10 1809 (October 2018 Update) in the Release Preview Ring. KB 4476976 raises the version number to 17763.288. Unlike the "normal" updates coming from the rs5_release_svc_prod1 branch, this update is maintained in the rs5_release_svc_prod2 branch. The <needed>patch is in the link:p

Edit. Same Cpu performance(stock clocks). But will your BGA survive the patch?

I have been running this since yesterday afteroon. Not had, or noticed any issues whatsoever. Have a NAS drive connected and set with "map network drive" and windows update is working on it too. And Opera x64 set as my default internet browser (strongly recommend it if people haven't tried opera yet).

For anyone reading this, to avoid a potential silly error like I did. After you use rufus to create the ISO. Before you reboot and wipe your PC and install this. Put an offline installer for the internet browser you want to use on the USB stick too. As with no edge. I couldn't find a way to get online and get this setup. There probably is a way using either filexplorer or command prompt to download it, but I just needed to use a different PC to download it onto the USB. And then was good to go.

    Internet Explorer? That's still a thing? :D

I keep a very similar folder (without the mysteriously blanked out program though o_O) on an external drive - drivers and everything. That way I can get fully up and running without ever needing to go online. Very handy to have. I'm also getting very fond of using portable versions wherever possible.

But removing Cortana also mean I can't use Type-to-search in Startmenu as well right? Can I enable that back  I thought disabling network/internet search is enough for that kind of thing

@Papusan Can I make Everything act like Cortana search?

Like hitting Windows key and typing and have everything start looking for things?

I would like to avoid have to open Everything or click it first and then search.

Let me know if this is possible.

I already tried KFA(Kaspersky AV Free) 2019 and my PC was super snappy. Only issue with KFA 2019 was horrible battery life and won't allow any downloads on separate drives esp. files downloading from Mega.Nz. So, I removed it and used WD 1809.5 version.

Just don't use one.. be just like me.. I completed 3 years without using any kind of antivirus + without formating.. always upgrading and still do not suffer from a single hiccup :D even though I connect alot of USB's from work.. etc.. ;)

You are the Anti-Virus! I look at task manager.. study and learn each process.. the names.. the files.. etc. :) this is how I can differentiate between a virus or malware or not at all ;) I even faced a miner or some kind a malware by my self and removed it without needing any kind of program it was in some of my friends USB..Proof...

and just in case something wrong happens due to virus damage.. [it never happens to me] I got my own back-up through O&O DiskImage scheduled to backing up every 5 days ;)
I only got corrupted windows 2 ~3 times due to RAM tweaking but not due to virus or malware.. :D but I always have my back up online & ready & restored within 5 minutes ;)

Notice:- What I mean with...( without formating) which meant without formating to setup Windows 10 from zero :)

Cortana Is Leaving Windows 10’s Search Bar, But Bing Stays
    [IMG]

In the upcoming release of Windows 10, codenamed 19H1, Cortana and the search bar are breaking up and moving into separate houses. Unfortunately, the search bar won custody of Bing. Windows 10 19H1 is expected for release around April 2019.

The separation was announced by Microsoft in a blog post unveiling Windows Insider build 18317.

Win 10 is like a naked human wandering in a nuclear lab to become mutated like the Hulk. So its better to have a Spacesuit to protect the users and the best part is, WD blocks MSFT's malware like forced updates by deleting them!

Yet another guinea pig version FOR THEIR LATEST AND GREATEST! This newest OS version is so massively screwed up... Redmond HQ even can't deliver updated patches in the same timeframe as their other and previous OS versions. This tells everything.

Microsoft starts forced upgrades to Win10 1809. Again. This time with a next generation machine learning model.

    Here we go again.

Microsoft’s starting to push the Win10 1809 upgrade on Windows 10 Home machines, and on Win10 Pro machines that haven’t been properly set to block the upgrade.

I have no doubt that 1809 will be the most stable version of Win10 yet. (Damning with faint praise alert.) MS took more than three months after its release to fix the problems. But you’d be well advised to lock down and see if there are any more big surprises.

There’s a newly acknowledged Edge local IP networking bug in Win10 Woody on Windoze | Jan 18, 2019
Responding to complaints, Microsoft acknowledges that all of this month’s Win10 Patch Tuesday cumulative updates make it impossible to access certain local pages from Edge.

If you can’t get to your router’s admin page using the Edge browser, there’s a reason why. Microsoft broke it with this month’s cumulative updates...

Almost four years since release, and still searching for a stable release.....Shows how pathetic their OS as a service route has become. This Windows 10 LTSC that Ive been trying to muddle with has occasional hard locks requiring a hard reset. What a world class piece of garbage.

Microsoft released -- the missing -- cumulative update KB4476976 for Windows 10 version 1809 yesterday evening to the public. It’s finally out. The real deal  Not a v3 or 4 of their guinea versions. And of course with lots who had to be fixed. Maybe Microsoft should give their other OS versions that yet has not expired same love? Test them longer and then throw them out all at same time?

Microsoft has for January 22, 2019 released the cumulative update KB4476976 for Windows 10 version 1809 and Windows Server of 2019. Here is a brief overview of the changes.

Cumulative update KB4476976 for Windows 10 V1809 and Server 2019 raises the build to 17763,292. The update includes quality improvements, but no new operating system features. Here is the list of changes:

    • Addresses an issue that may cause Microsoft Edge to stop working with certain display drivers.
    • Addresses an issue that may cause third-party applications to have difficulty authenticating hotspots.
    • Addresses an issue that causes promotions of non-root domains to fail with the error, “The replication operation encountered a database error.” The issue occurs in Active Directory forests in which optional features like Active Directory recycle have been enabled.
    • Addresses an issue related to the date format for the Japanese era calendar. For more information, see KB4469068.
    • Addresses a compatibility issue with AMD R600 and R700 display chipsets.
    • Addresses an audio compatibility issue when playing newer games with 3D Spatial Audio mode enabled through multichannel audio devices or Windows Sonic for Headphones.
    • Addresses an issue that may cause audio playback to stop responding when playing Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC) audio content after using a Seek operation such as rewind.
    • Addresses an issue that allows users to uninstall apps from the Start menu when the “Prevent users from uninstalling applications from Start menu” group policy is set.
    • Addresses an issue that causes File Explorer to stop working when you click the Turn On button for the timeline feature. This issue occurs when the “Allow upload of user activities” group policy is disabled.
    • Addresses an issue that prevents users from installing a Local Experience Pack from the Microsoft Store when that language is already set as the active Windows display language.
    • Addresses an issue that causes some symbols to appear in a square box on a text control.
    • Addresses an issue with two-way audio that occurs during phone calls for some Bluetooth headsets.
    • Addresses an issue that may turn off TCP Fast Open by default on some systems.
    • Addresses an issue that may cause applications to lose IPv4 connectivity when IPv6 is unbound.
    • Addresses an issue on Windows Server 2019 that may break connectivity on guest virtual machines (VMs) when applications inject the low-resource flag on packets.
    • Addresses an issue that occurs if you create a page file on a drive with FILE_PORTABLE_DEVICE characteristics. The “Windows created a temporary warning” message appears.
    • Addresses an issue that causes Remote Desktop Services to stop accepting connections after accepting several connections.
    • Addresses an issue in Windows Server 2019 that causes a Hyper-V VM to remain at the bootloader screen for OS selection when restarting the machine. This issue occurs when Virtual Machine Connection (VMConnect) is attached.
    • Addresses an issue with rendering of end-user-defined characters (EUDC) in Microsoft Edge.
    • Updates the Ltotape.sys driver to add native support for Linear Tape-Open 8 (LTO-8) tape drives.

As always.. after each single update... POOPS(or diarrhea) are incoming more from Microsoft :D

New Cumulative Update Is Out for Windows 10 1809 – Brings Two Known Issues

    1. Applications that use a Microsoft Jet database with the Microsoft Access 97 file format may fail to open if the database has column names greater than 32 characters. The database will fail to open with the error, “Unrecognized Database Format”.
    2. After installing KB4480116, some users report that they cannot load a webpage in Microsoft Edge using a local IP address. Browsing fails or the webpage may become unresponsive.
