Windows 10 Version 1809 Removes User Data Winaero.com
A couple of days ago, Microsoft started rolling out Windows 10 October 2018 Update, version 1809. It looks like the update has some serious issues which were not noticed during development. A number of users report that after they update, they lose all their documents, more specifically the folders Documents, Pictures, Videos, become empty!
Besides these (absolutely serious and terrible) issues, there are plenty of other reports on Reddit and other web sites. The most often mentioned issues are:
- Broken file associations.
- Reset of settings.
- Deleted scheduled tasks.
- Finally, certain users can't install the update. The OS gets stuck in an update-rollback loop.
Anyway, I suggest you to make a backup copy of your important data. If you running low on disk space, use OneDrive, Dropbox, or Google Drive, something like that. It is better to expend a considerable amount of time taking a backup or uploading them somewhere even if it feels like a waste of time to you rather than losing them completely.

NetMarketShare shows Windows 10's share falling, Windows 7 rising Betanews.com Wayne Williams 3 days ago
Usage share monitoring service StatCounter saw Windows 10 overtake Windows 7 back in February, and its latest figures put the new operating system on 50.07 percent, well ahead of Windows 7 on 37.2 percent.
Rival monitoring service NetMarketShare disagrees however. While Windows 10 gained significant share in August, at Windows 7’s expense, the latest figures, for September, show a reversal of fortune. -
It is very pleasing to see this broken piece of garbage failing so hard. I hope that trend continues and leaves them with no option but to indefinitely extend the retail sales and support for Windows 7 in order to remain financially solvent.
Like all versions of Windows 8 that came before it, Windows 10 was not worth a damn on the day it was released and they have done nothing but botch it up more with every version update. Their abject incompetence is truly stupifying, and rivaled only by their contempt for the people that successful businesses affectionately identify as customers.Spartan@HIDevolution, Vasudev, Aroc and 1 other person like this. -

However, that battery is draining 1W faster is interesting. I can hear a faint fuzz from my speakers - I installed an older driver and maybe it's not letting the speakers turn off like they usually do. For me, the Intel Display Audio only affects HDMI audio output. The Realtek audio driver handles my built-in speakers.

Probably some WDDM cache + dedicated graphics something issue all over again. Will have to do MOAR INVESTIGATION.
Anyway I fixed the 4.3W drain. Now it's back to a more normal 3W (25% brightness, connected to Wifi), complete idle. Intel boasted about some power saving update. I wonder if that actually has an effect on battery life. -

For a lot of performance-enthusiasts here, Microsoft does not cater to your needs. It caters to the 99.9% of users who want something that they can check their emails with, go on social media, and write documents. I see a lot of complaining here, but tbh, it's just futile. MS is just going to laugh at you because they couldn't care less; you make up 0.01% of the userspace who actually care about performance.
Exact same goes for poorly designed computers. About 0.01% of people know what throttling is. Most are happy to let their CPU and GPU run at 0.8GHz whilst at 99C. Complaining is no use. Not going to buy their laptop? Don't worry, somebody else will.Jolga77 likes this. -

@Ultra Male I haven't updated on Redstone 5 yet, but what would be the main things to retweak after? I usually have a sense that I should check O&O ShutUp 10, but beyond that, I don't have a quick guideline of sorts as to which ones I should be on the lookout for. I almost feel like some of the tweaks we did before might be overwritten/reverted after the upgrade which is a major concern for me.

Win10 version 1809 buglog – including troubling tales of lost user data
Posted on October 4th, 2018 at 08:05 woody Comment on the AskWoody Lounge
I’m keeping a log of bugs that are uncovered in the just-released Win10 version 1809. Not that I recommend you install it, mind you — quite the opposite. But I figure the world could use a one-stop bug shop, to stay on top of things.
So far, we have one officially recognized bug:
Intel Audio displays an intcdaud.sys notification. Microsoft and Intel have identified a compatibility issue with a range of Intel Display Audio device drivers that may result in excessive processor demand and reduced battery life. As a result, the update process to Windows 10, version 1809 fails ( KB4465877).
Customers who see this notification when setting up their Windows 10 October 2018 Update have an Intel Audio Display device driver ( intcdaud.sys, versions 10.25.0.3 – 10.25.0.8) installed on their systems.
On the “What needs your attention notification”, select the backbutton to remain on your current version of Windows 10.
And a bunch of unacknowledged problems, with the most distressing involving deleted user data:
- I’m seeing reports all over about user data getting deleted during the upgrade. Still don’t see a unifying cause. (Brad Sams has an independent report on Petri.com.)
- Various user folders (in this case C:\Users\Public\Documents and C:\Users\<user>\Documents) disappear.
- Entire user profiles disappear. In this case, the problem may be with the Group Policy setting “Delete user profiles older than a specified number of days on system restart.” But this thread says that’s bunk, because the problem occurs on Home machines.
- Deleted almost all the data on a solid state drive. It’s possible that the data was shuffled off to OneDrive, and is sitting there awaiting a full sync.
- There’s the always-reliable problem set with the isntaller trying to bring in bad drivers.
- The installer uninstalls CCleaner — which may be a bug or a feature, your choice. SEE... THE MOTHER VIRUS KILL AVAST's OWN MALWARE.
- We fixed the issue causing Task Manager to report inaccurate CPU usage.
- We fixed the issue where the arrows to expand “Background processes” in Task Manager blink constantly and weirdly.
There are the usual problems with PCs that don’t upgrade properly — an HP notebook, for example, that hangs during the upgrade process and another report blaming UX Patcher.
Have you hit a bug? If so, please reply to this post and include links whenever possible.

Action Needed Before Updating to Windows® 10 October 2018 Update Intel.com
Description of issue
Windows® 10 October 2018 Update update may be blocked due to issues seen with Intel® Display Audio Driver versions 10.25.0.3 through 10.25.0.8. This may result in excessive processor demand and reduced battery life. A fix for these issues is already included in Intel® Display Audio Driver version 10.25.0.10, which is bundled with Intel® Graphics Driver version 24.20.100.6286 and newer. Intel strongly recommends that all users with 6th Generation (codenamed Skylake) or newer processors confirm that Intel® Graphics Driver version 24.20.100.6286 or newer is installed on their computers before attempting to update to Windows® 10 October 2018 Update.

But, to stop complaining and stop having an influence on those that are not stupid beyond the point of being reachable is the wrong thing to do. Surrender is a rose-colored and politically correct form of self-betrayal, and doing so is not worth it only for the sake of having harmony. We can apply this to many areas of life beyond PC tech. People that live and act based on principle never embrace filth just because it is popular or because resistance is perceived by the weak to be futile. You fight the filth until you die and give them nothing but hell and grief every step of the way. You draw blood and inflict harm on the adversary at every opportunity. Even if you lose the battle, you have the priceless satisfaction of knowing you inflicted some measurable harm. That's just the right way to do things.
Now, there may come a day that you toss the baby out with the bath water and write it all off as a total loss, defecating one last time on the whole shebang right before you close the door on your way out and shake the dust off of your feet. That is not surrender, it's just a metaphorical example of washing the dirt off of your hands.

Apple: Removes headphone jack.

Apple: removes home button:

Only 0.01% of people will switch to Android. The rest? Well, they'll help Apple's sales get stronger than ever.
Microsoft: Removes paint from Windows
Consumer: HOW DARE YOU! -uses another photo editing software, but still uses Windows
Microsoft can do whatever they want to do and they won't revert unless a significant portion of people backlash. That driver downgrade issue? Meh. If it did it silently, the average consumer won't notice. Windows and its telementary issues? Meh. Few know about it. Yet the vast majority of students, and staff at my school use it. It's simply not an issue for vast majority of people. So Microsoft won't stop it. You're forced to use Windows 10 anyway. MacOS is expensive, and Linux falls behind on battery life and program support.Last edited: Oct 5, 2018 -
RS5 UI is more closer to Android material design and it actually causes lot of wastage of screen space on laptops or desktops. I'm sticking with v1803. -
You are also wrong about the preference for Windows 7 being a small minority. Adoption and acceptance of Windows 10 is a struggle for them and they have started losing the tiny edge of market share among Windows users that it took them 3+ years to achieve, mostly by force and coerced means. The number of people that actually like Windows 10 are a minority. A fair percentage of Windows 10 lovers are ex-OS X fanboys that finally realized what a piece of crap their Mac has turned out to be. The transition has been easier for them because their bar was set so low.
Android has the edge over iOS and continues to grow because Apple sucks even more than Macro$lop, and smart people recognize that. The US has the largest population of idiots in the world, and this is the only place in the world where Android's market share is only slightly ahead of iOS. Just about everywhere else iOS is dwarfed by Android. -
Afaik if you're not on battery you won't get any throttling to UWP apps or whatever they apply it too.
To be honest this is the less worrying thing to me about Windows 10. I was and i'm still concerned about the wifi adapter disappearing after resuming from sleep or getting constant standby BSODs like i was on 1803..Vasudev likes this. -

Microsoft made its latest Windows 10 feature update available to download on Tuesday, and shortly afterwards the problems started. It didn’t play nicely with some Intel CPUs, Edge and Windows Store apps didn’t work for some users and, most damningly, the update was found to be deleting personal files.
In the face of so many problems, Microsoft had to do something, and it has. The update has been pulled.

The Windows 10 October 2018 Update was set to be pushed to all users from October 9, but Microsoft will no doubt be delaying that rollout now while it sorts out the mess.

Microsoft Hits Pause on Windows 10 October 2018 Update Rollout Due to Missing Files Issue Wccftech.com | 2 hours ago
Microsoft recommends not to clean install Version 1809 until new media is rolled out
The ****Y company has warned against manually updating to the October 2018 Update. While it could be a small problem fixable through a cumulative update, it is highly recommended to wait for Microsoft’s update on this issue before you clean install it on your machine and possibly run into more problems.
“If you have manually downloaded the Windows 10 October 2018 Update installation media, please don’t install it and wait until new media is available.” – Microsoft@Mr. Fox
We will update this space as Microsoft resumes rolling out the Windows 10 October 2018 Update. In the meantime, stay away from the latest Windows 10 version even if you have already downloaded the files.
– If you lost your files in the excitement of a new version, you can try recovering them (here’s how). You can also contact Microsoft at +1-800-MICROSOFT if you have run into any issues.

Microsoft yanks the Win10 1809 upgrade
Posted on October 6th, 2018 at 05:12 woody Comment on the AskWoody Lounge
In the past few hours — very early Saturday morning US time — Microsoft pulled the Win10 version 1809 upgrade package. Details are sparse ( yawn, as I grab a cup of coffee), but it looks like the official Download Windows 10 pageis on version 1803, and ISOs have disappeared.
The KB 4464619 article now states:
We have paused the rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) for all users as we investigate isolated reports of users missing some files after updating.
If you have checked for updates and believe you have an issue, please contact us directly at +1-800-MICROSOFT or find a local number in your area https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4051701/global-customer-service-phone-numbers.
If you have access to a different PC, please contact us at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/contactus/(link will vary according to country of origin).
If you have manually downloaded the Windows 10 October 2018 Update installation media, please don’t install it and wait until new media is available.
We will provide an update when we resume rolling out the Windows 10 October 2018 Update to customers.
Permit me to provide an English-language translation:
"If you were gullible enough to believe the breathless reviews about a product that’s marginally better than what you have, and you trusted Microsoft enough to install it on your machine as quickly as you could, the joke’s on you."
Moral of the story: Listen to what the experienced Windows folks say. It’s happened before, and it’ll happen again.
This time it’s particularly dire, because I have no idea how Microsoft is going to restore the data it deleted.
My Recuva trick for restoring deleted data doesn’t work all the time. Recuva itself doesn’t work all the time, even in the best circumstances (particularly on solid state drives). This isn’t one of those best circumstances.
Note the strategic timing of the announcement. Microsoft has known about this bug since October 2. I reported on it, along with a workaround that works most of the time, on October 4. They waited until early Saturday morning, October 6, to acknowledge the problem and pull the plug.

Microsoft Has A Software Quality Problem Posted on October 6, 2018 by Thurrot.com
Earlier this week, Microsoft released the Windows 10 October 2018 Update to the public. After months of testing with Insiders, the company finally started rolling it out to the general public, giving them a taste of all the new features. Except…there is a major issue: the update is deleting some users’ personal files, with no apparent way of recovering the missing files.
More than 48 hours after users started reporting the issue, Microsoft pulled the October 2018 Update while it investigates the issue. And that highlights a fundamental problem with Microsoft’s testing process for Windows.
You see, Microsoft mainly relies on the Windows Insider program for fixing bugs on the Windows software. As Microsoft develops new updates like the October 2018 Update, it rolls out new features over weeks and months, which is then tested by Insiders. Most of the widespread problems with these new features and updates are usually noticed by Windows Insiders and later fixed by Microsoft before a major update is released to the public.
And then there are issues that only affect some users, leaving them buried under all the other feedback and bug reports within Feedback Hub, the app used by Windows 10 users and Insiders to report bugs and suggestions to Redmond. That’s exactly what happened with the data deletion issue. Some Windows Insiders have reported this issue as early as 3 months ago, as noted by Rafael Rivera on Twitter. If you simply open up Feedback Hub and search for “documents deleted” you will see multiple reports from Insiders where their files were automatically deleted after they installed the update.
Because these issues aren’t widespread, most of these reports from Insiders had low levels of upvotes, ranging from 3-10. That means Microsoft likely never even noticed these reports from Insiders, which is why is the only thing that can explain how such a major issue made it to the public release — all of that simply because of how the Insider program’s bug reporting system actually works.
Important issues like these are often buried under thousands of other general feedback like “Make File Explorer look more modern” or “Add Acrylic to File Explorer”. Although these are valid feedback, they often prevent actual issues from being noticed by Microsoft, and that is a fundamental problem with the entire Insider program system. Things get even worse considering the fact that Microsoft has cut down on independent testing a few years ago, relying mostly on Insiders for testing its software.
Microsoft’s Windows Insider team will probably find a way to explain itself here, but it’s more than apparent: the Feedback Hub simply isn’t capable of dealing with issues from millions of users, especially when the app is mostly used by fans to provide feedback — mainly fueled by their love for the OS. Critical issues are not only buried under borderline-fictional things like users asking for Acrylic on File Explorer, but they are also often buried so deep down that Microsoft’s systems never even pick them up, leading to disasters like this.

Microsoft yanks buggy Win10 1809 upgrade, leaving zapped files in its wake Woody on windows | OCT 6, 2018 6:16 AM PT
It took four days of complaints about deleted Documents, Photos and other files and late Friday, Microsoft finally pulled the Win10 1809 upgrade. Microsoft has known about the bug for months.
Combine that with Microsoft’s self-granted permission to install the Win10 1809 upgrade on any computer that “Checks” for updates and you have a potent recipe for disaster. Nobody knows how many hapless Win10 users clicked “Check for Updates” and discovered that all of their Documents and Pictures were blown away

I have both ISOs created, but don't normally publish them to the public. Also, what I remove may not be right for you. For example, I leave in Cortana and Edge in the images for both 1809 and 2019 LTSC. They are in there according to NTLite using the beta version 17 published in August. I have not tested the images to see if things are broken. Here is a list of additional components removed from LTSC:
If there is anything on that list of items you need that I removed from the LTSC iso (I removed a similar list from the regular 1809 ISO as well, just had additional stuff I also had to get rid of), then this image isn't for you. If you need an explanation on why I got rid of what I did, I can provide that, including there being telemetry outside of Asimov found in the CEIP, Delivery Optimization, Device Experience, Microsoft Sync Framework has some logging, OOBE, People Experience, Reliability Analysis Services (runs telemetry when you run something in compatibility mode), Steps recorder (awesome tool, but the telemetry is fed back to MS, so **** it, not worth it, although handy when troubleshooting issues), Unified telemetry client, WaaS assessment, webcam experience, and windows error reporting. So, many of the components that O&O addresses, those components are completely removed. There is a little degradation in performance with these components removed, but not a lot (less than 1% for my use cases), but it still could run worse for your use cases.
Now, Wi-Fi Sense and WCN are to stop the sending of your passwords to other devices or allowing non-registered devices to seamlessly connect to your computer. If that is something you care about, this isn't for you. This is a security reason for removal. You can still connect the device to the laptop, but it isn't seamless, you will have to do it the old way.
Also, if you do certain remoting, then the removal of Windows Remote Management, Remote Assistance, and Remote Registry may be an issue. It still has Remote Desktop Protocol (removing that breaks so much **** for me), but if you ever contacted customer service and they sent you a link to remote into your system, those won't work in some cases because remote assistance is gone.
If you want your settings to sync across devices, or files to sync across devices, this build (my custom one) is not for you. If you noticed all the sync items removed AND the offline files components, plus onedrive not being there, you will not have those features available. If that is a problem, this would not be a good fit for you. I also remove the XBOX App.
Internet Explorer being removed is ONLY the frontend. Even though edge is on the system, IE is also on every system hidden. The back end of IE is used in file explorer, the desktop, etc. You cannot remove those. But this gets rid of the front end browser entirely, so you can never call up that browser.
If you want face or photo login, that isn't in my build. It is a security hazard, so I removed it.
I left defender in (although the windows firewall is crippled due to some of my selections). So, it is mixed on that. If you use location or geo-fencing, those were removed from the build. You may care about that due to using a laptop in case it is stolen, but this build was made for home desktops, etc., so it may not be appropriate for that system for those security features if using programs relying on M$'s built in location services.
Also, I turned off being able to use a MS account at all with the OS. Granted, that is in settings, not in components, so can be changed, but I don't publish my selection of settings.
Edit: Also, there are a couple components in the OS that use telemetry that I left in because other programs I use rely on those to be able to do their jobs. If you need those pointed out to you, I can do so. But many people think just get rid of Asimov and done, but that is wrong.
Meanwhile, the base three that MUST be removed before installing ANY build version of Windows 10 are the Unified Telemetry Client (Asimov), the Server-Initiated Healing Client (SIHClient.exe), and the SXS Backup (which can reinstall those components from there). That is the bare minimum everyone should remove before installing Win 10. MINIMUM.Last edited: Oct 8, 2018 -
