Ha ha, I just noticed mine. Maybe Bill is transcending into the heavens now and doing a Vulcan mind-meld with all x-86 pc's. Could you imagine what would happen if they preserved his brain perpetually on the master computer NSA has been recording all transactions in usa and beyond? Would everyone's pc crash until they paid a monthly fee, used win 10, and wore virtual reality msft glasses? Would that be Armageddon? It sounds worse.

About 10 times per night for a few months and your computer will return control to back to you, just so long as you are true to your word.

It's called GWX.exe (as in Get Windows 10) and in your C:\Widnows\system32\GWX directory. Must be in registry or some other way to keep it from loading. It's not a service at least from what I can tell, so it must be loaded on login. You can manually remove it from Task Manager.

THANK YOU!
I just read now that lots of people got this worm now that the release date of W10 is confirmed to be 29th of Jul. -
Yep, figures.

Meh, I got it too. Signed up for it. Since I have 8.1 Pro, Windows 10 Pro for free sounds good to me. Seems like it will be an ISO distribution based on the 3GB file size it is quoting so I'll clean install it when I feel like it.

Ughhh... I hate such updates. A year back I accidentally installed Browser Choice update. It screwed up my IE setup, and popped up every time I booted. Even after installing different browser (Firefox), it still refused to go away. Ended up reintalling OS the very same date I got that update.
Updates like these really make it sad that MS won't let user choose which updates to install on Windows 10. Right now that's my biggest issue with it... -
Browser Choice should only unpin your IE once. Did your copy somehow got re-updated every time you boot?

I'd rather get a notification before you start a 3GB download onto my laptop tyvm.

That's going to be interesting to watch what happens when that Win10 update actually hits. Just imagine millions upon millions of unwary users "upgrading" to Windows 10, only to immediately find out that their computers will not boot anymore, or half of their software applications refuse to work, crash, malfunction, etc., etc. That's not even counting those hundreds of millions of users who will just be lost and feel their computer "doesn't work" anymore simply because of the differences, and lost functionality in the new OS.
It's going to be Armageddon... -

Noticed my parents have that icon on their PC.
Unfortunately I don't remember the details, only remember that it really peed me off! After I did the clean install I was very careful no to install that piece of crap again. Obviously I want to mention that it wasn't entirely MS's faulty (just the part about crappy functioning), but also idiots at EU parliament who sometimes have nothing better to do. -
If I can just reserve the copy and not install it for six months it sounds alright, I assume there will be a bunch of bugs to fix the first few months. It's kinda tempting to try it out, but I'm not sure it's a great idea, too many questions at the moment.
Can I recreate my Win7 C: disc with Macrium Reflect after installing Win10 for instance? -
I'm installing it on Day 1.

As long you activated your Windows 10 before that year ends, it be fine for good like they did for the previous Win8 promotion.
(Not just download and install .. you still need to activate afterwards to keep) -
Win8 and 10 reset make them a clean install?

I'm doing it too but I'm doing a clean install on my second SSD after I back up everything on my download and game hard drive to my desktop just in case.

Is my Intel Pentium T4400 mobile cpu too old for Windows 10? I can't find info about it supporting PrefetchW and PAE. It runs Windows 8.1 64bit however.Last edited: Jun 2, 2015

Yes, Windows 10 will ship with DirectX 12. -
i didn't get the free upgrade notification
-
Honestly, I'd be pretty happy about not getting the notification.By the way, it came in a recommended Windows update a couple of weeks ago and 'activated' only very recently. That you didn't get it doesn't mean you don't qualify, it just means that you didn't install that particular update.

so i installed i think a dot net framework update and now it shows

The Windows 10 notification doesn't appear for me, and I have the correct updates installed (according to a Microsoft originating article on the topic). I also followed their troubleshooting advice involving running some script via Command Line that's supposed to check if my hardware is compatible - the script seemed to run but I still didn't get the Windows 10 notification, and I received no information from the script either. This was the procedure I carried out:

Anyone know why I don't have the Windows 10 notification icon? -
I'm installing 10130 right now (installed TP and set it to fast ring). I took a peek through the settings app. I really like how much control they have given us in one place. On the other hand, I'm not sure I like the idea of the forced updates.
So is everyone using their Windows 8.1 drivers for this? I am curious about Clevo's Hotkey in particular and apps like it. Kind of important to have a properly functioning laptop.
Oh and as usual the Synaptics touch pad driver is junk... Two finger scrolling works about 80% of the time for me.
Curious to see how it handles games though. I didn't do much with the TP last time I installed it because it was on a mechanical hard drive but I killed my RAID last time I installed 8.1 so I had a spare 240GB SSD.
I ended up with a crash when it was linking my Microsoft account so I ended up with a local account and had to go in and add my account manually.Last edited: Jun 3, 2015 -

Anyone has any idea how will the upgrade go. I never actually upgrade; I always do a clean install.
Will they provide an ISO that can be used in a digital media for a clean install? -
It seems likely that after you upgrade and the key is activated you will be able to make media of some sort.
Well... benches... Looks like 10 improves over 8.1 where physics are concerned quite a bit. Definitely uses the CPU better. The FS Ultra run was compared against a +100 core/+100 mem in 8.1 because I'm too lazy to go back and run it again without the overclock but it still held up well.

Pro edition of Win 10 will still have "old way" of updating, as in you can choose what to install.
Yup, just like back in Win 8 beta days Win 7 drivers were used.
On T100 had to reinstall few drivers, 8.1 ones work fine. -

:O ... So instead of installing a clean copy of the OS like normal people do ... I will have to make an upgrade that will most certainly won't be as reliable as a fresh install and then make that my fail safe OS reinstall solution ?
Never thought it will become this bad -
Nice. Makes me glad I purchased 8.1 Pro
I figured as much. I really only need Hotkey although to be honest... its working great without it, maybe I should leave it alone.
Well... back up your files, upgrade, then make the media and you have your key for a clean install. I don't see the issue.alexhawker likes this. -

Excellent, looks like a win for Win 10, quite significantly on some of the tests! Although I would like to see a comparison to Win 7 too, because I heard Win 7 beats Win 8 in some tests as well. -
Unfortunately Windows 7 does not work right on my machine now that Clevo dropped support for it so I never did get it working correctly. My guess is that W10 fixes what Microsoft broke in 8.1 with the CPU performance and maybe slightly increases it but not much.
My gaming experience, however, is interesting. TW3 stutters every few seconds no matter what setting it is on despite the insanely high frame rate on low which makes it basically unplayable. Bioshock Infinite benchmark showed some slight stutter but seemed mostly smooth, however the minimum frame rate was 5FPS which is abysmal by a lot.
The situation changes with Shadow of Mordor though... maxed out, 57.55 min, 112.58 average, 169.01 max
Then the trend continues with MHO benchmark
I got almost an extra 2k points with stock clocks on that benchmark but I noticed the stuttering again. I wonder if SLI is bugged...
EDIT: Disabled SLI, stutter is gone... TW3 running at 35FPS on a single card looks better than it did running at 65 in SLI. Way to go, nVidia.Last edited: Jun 3, 2015 -

Is that with nVidia GPU drivers for Win 10? Looks like they still have some work to do. -
Yeah the drivers came through Windows Update
-

Have you tried drivers from nVidia website?
Windows 10 also installed drivers for my CPU (3rd gen Atom), but they weren't properly functioning, had to go to Asus website to download working drivers. -

No, I just installed Win 10 before it got the chance to nag me. Though I still haven't updated my Win 7 machine. Will be extra careful not to install that crap. -
It auto-installed the latest. I'm going to uninstall them and see how my 8.1 go to, 347.88, works.
-
347.88 and 350.12 work fine. 353 and 353.06 that have the SLI profile for TW3 though, I can't open nvidia control panel to set SLI so I don't have SLI in TW3. The others games don't stutter anymore though.
Both 353 drivers give a code 43 in device manager... So I guess I'll play TW3 in 8.1 and disable SLI in W10.Last edited: Jun 3, 2015 -
Yes, pretty much everyone with settings to automatically install updates got it and some who also do their updates manually, but don't always check in details what each update does.
