Valve may change that though if and when SteamBox and SteamOS gains momentum. Lots of newer game titles are also developing for SteamOS, which is really Linux. So keep your bet set on Lord GabeN as he may be our savior.

I would love to adapt SteamOS but surround sound support is seriously an odd thing to be missing for something just Linux with a UI skin.

Meh... SteamOS UI is much like "Big Picture" mode on the Windows client. If you are 20 feet away from a TV, using a gamepad, and pretending you're gaming on a console it's much easier to use. At least you can read the text from so far away. Sitting in front of a laptop or a monitor, kind of stupid. Reminds me too much of the nasty Windows 8+ Metro/Modern/Start/whatever-they-call-it-next crapola. Give me a desktop, Linux or Windows, and I'm a nicer person. Otherwise, bring me a bucket 'cause I'm gonna hurl.

Another factor for laptop users is Win 7 is the ONLY OS that can use Intel Trim for Raid 0 ssd's; which means you do not constantly eat your ssd's up.
Intel will have to pick a successor the Win 7 within the next 5 years, so they usually doesn't bet on losers. And well, there really is (/are) no alternative(s) to Intel, anyway.
Monopolies have a tendency to screw the public, whether they like it or not. Unless proved wrong soon, Win 10 looks like Msft's forced vengeance to the public that has refused garbage OS's from the Giant: if there were good news, it would have leaked by now. Maybe we can get the European courts to spank Msft AGAIN to MAKE them keep Win 7 for public domain. That would make Bill's spine twist and wither significantly. -
I honestly don't want any harm to come to Micro$haft. They used to be a decent outfit, and I'd really like to see them straighten up and fly right. After all, they did give us Windows 7, so we know they are actually capable of doing something right if they want to badly enough. I want them to stop being stupid and stop trying to ram garbage down our throats because they think they know what we need. If wanted somebody else to do all of my thinking for me and just accept whatever they feel is best for me I could have switched from PC to Mac a long time ago. The problem is, they have too many imbeciles working there that actually believe they do know what is best for us, don't care what we want, and like to tell lies such as pretending to listen and apply customer feedback.

Windows 10 Technical Preview = Beta (now)
Windows 10 Final = Final ready for public release with no bugs
In reality.....
Windows 10 Technical Preview = Pre-Alpha stage
Windows 10 Final (AKA RTM) = Beta 1
Windows 10 updates = experimental updates letting the poor millions of users that have signed up for the update to do the testing for us while we enjoy crippling or bricking their systems and installing random drivers to reduce their device's functionality and special OEM features......why? Just because we can and because WE will choice your Windows updates and drivers and what you can do or cannot do with your own system! MUWHAHAH
Oh and how are we going to pull this off @Mr. Fox , will give you a small false promise of increased performance due to better hardware support just like we did in Windows 8 and were able to trick you, but now we have another bait up our sleeves, it is called DX12 and we won't give it to you if you don't follow our lead and stick to the awesome Widnows 7, you have to upgrade to enjoy the latest and greatest! -

You’ll need to connect the MSA that you registered for the Windows Insider Program with (and accepted the “Microsoft Windows Insider Program Agreement”) in order to continue receiving new Windows 10 Insider Preview builds (both Fast and Slow rings) from Windows Update.
This change is for the Windows Insider Program ONLY, and is specific to how we’re delivering the Insider Preview builds. Once available on July 29th, you do not need an MSA to upgrade Windows 10 on your Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 PCs if they are not receiving Insider Preview builds. You will not be required to use an MSA on new PCs that come with Windows 10 preinstalled or clean installed from media. Some features in Windows 10 do require an MSA to use, such as downloading apps in the Windows Store.
In other words: you want totally free Win10? Get MS Account.
Pay attention! MS didn't tell for how LONG your Win10 wll be activated if you upgraded from Technical Preview build. It may be "till the end life of your hardware" OR "till July 2016".
This is number one to clear but looks like you will have to do it often. https://www.bing.com/account/personalizationLast edited: Jun 21, 2015 -

Did they just change their mind about the free upgrade for Insider Preview users?
http://microsoft-news.com/windows-10-may-not-be-free-for-insiders-after-all/
LE: That link is gone now, lol. It was working a couple hours ago. Basicly they were saying that you would still need a valid win7/8 license , even if you were an inside preview user.
So at first they said:
Windows Insiders running the Windows 10 Insider Preview (Home and Pro editions) with their registered MSA connected to their PC will receive the final release build of Windows 10 starting on July 29th. This will come as just another flight. I’ve gotten a lot of questions from Windows Insiders about how this will work if they clean installed from ISO. As long as you are running an Insider Preview build and connected with the MSA you used to register, you will receive the Windows 10 final release build and remain activated. Once you have successfully installed this build and activated, you will also be able to clean install on that PC from final media if you want to start over fresh.
And now, the psot has been silently modified to:
Windows Insiders running the Windows 10 Insider Preview (Home and Pro editions) with their registered MSA connected to their PC will receive the final release build of Windows 10 starting on July 29th. This will come as just another flight. I’ve gotten a lot of questions from Windows Insiders about how this will work if they clean installed from ISO. Once you have successfully installed this build, you will also be able to clean install on that PC from final media if you want to start over fresh. It’s important to note that only people running Genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1can upgrade to Windows 10 as part of the free upgrade offer.*

Ah well, that sucks if it is only free as an in-place upgrade. Hopefully, that doesn't mean you cannot do a clean install from ISO for free. If it does, I suspect power user and enthusiast adoption will be less than they are hoping. This is just another indicator that these dumb-dumbs are totally out of touch with some of their customers. They're only in sync with those who are happy to follow and be told what to do.

Maybe by clean install they mean: Install from iso to a NON-formatted drive which contains previously installed Win10RTM updated from TP build.

Update, June 21st 9:45AM: Microsoft has updated its blog post today and removed references to "remain activated." The stealthy edit isn't acknowledged, and we've reached out to the company for comment.

6-th of March 2015.
Da Costa said it will be a free upgrade for Windows Insiders testers to the RTM (release to manufacturing) build of Windows 10. However, to qualify for a free upgrade to the final Windows 10 version, users need to upgrade from Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1. -
If you can only do an in-place upgrade and cannot install to an empty HDD/SSD using an ISO with a free Windows 10 product key, or using a Windows 7/8.X product key for the system you are upgrading, this whole thing is just a bogus come-on deal.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -
I thought you have to do an in-place upgrade and then tie the activation to your MS account.
Do clean install and login to your MS account to get it activated.
That's just too much work for 4 hours... I hope they just let us pre-activate and be done with it under 30 mins.

Yeah, I really hate having to use a M$ account. I don't use any of the app crap and I don't want my online presence and activities tracked by these Nazis. Not that I think they will do anything crazy with it, it's just the overreaching and obnoxious control freak element of their approach that I truly despise.
They have so many strikes against them prior to RTM, with utter nonsense and idiocy like this M$ account and the possibility of not being able to disable Windows Updates, the decision-makers must be retarded fools with evil hearts. After Windows 8.X being such an adject failure, and how they can reasonably expect Windows 10 to have a warm embrace with these even more crazy aspects is beyond me. These "features" merely serve to underscore the magnitude of their stupidity and raise questions about the honorability of their intentions. I'm not getting any warm fuzzies from the DX12 hype and hoopla yet, so to feel even a smidgen of excitement so far isn't in me. The more I read, the more my interest wains and the more my resentment and contempt toward them builds. -
btw, 10147 keep forking up my wifi connection so have to roll back to 10130 -
People, been using Linux Mint x64 (Cinnamon) last 3 hours and I must say... it's so human-like! And it feels so polished! There is no GUI feature which would make me so mad as in Windows 10 (maybe some annoyance did appear looking at Start Menu but hey, it's not Windows afterall!) and there is no bug which would make me same mad too... because I yet to find any.
I can't use it for everyday tasks due to lack of PotPlayer which I use with SVP (24 to 60fps interpolation software) and really weak built-in video-player whatever it is called (not much worse than WMP) but I really like Mint!Last edited: Jun 21, 2015 -

Microsoft Isn't Giving Away Windows 10 Licenses to Beta Users After All -
WhatsThePoint Notebook Virtuoso
Microsoft has flip-flopped on this a few times already so it's best to wait until the RTM is released to so what can and can't be done.
That's not to say that if Windows 10 is receiving a Vista type acceptance in the future things would change yet again.
Nothing that I see is written in stone.
I'm fine with my Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on 1 SSD and my Windows 8.1 Pro x64 on another.

They never said they would give out licenses for free. The thing is: The Insider Program will continue, leading up to future Windows 10 updates (Redstone etc.). So if you stay with the Insider builds, of course, you can continue to use Windows 10 (or, more precisely, test Windows 10). Staying with the Insider Build means:
- Microsoft Account is mandatory
- You can´t defer receiving new builds - you are always running beta software with bugs
The "final", non-beta and stable Windows 10 version is only free for people with a Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 license. Here a Microsoft account is completely optional, and you won´t receive beta builds, only stable updates.alexhawker and Spartan@HIDevolution like this.
