Yeah, how about some perspective folks? A forced OS patch != concentration camps and genocide.

Oh c'mon really? *rolls eyes* OK. I'll fix it. Stop whining. [DONE]

It was symbolic reference to the Redmond Dictatorship that is rising before our very eyes, not genocide and concentration camps.

Now, where did I put that Rebel Flag jpeg?

Windoze 10. New. Exciting. Welcome to Digital Bondage.

This message brought to you by Micro$oft and the United States Department of Homeland Security. You will comply.

I think most of mine have heard enough from me that majority are terrified and absolutely will not be upgrading. At least not until some of their friends and family members do it and don't immediately get shark bit. That's when I expect the hell to break loose. Well, Billy Bob did it and he likes Windows 10. They already know better than to call me. Several were lectured about their "upgrades" to Windows 8 and I made it clear that my free rescue mission was a one-time gesture for a loved one that made a stupid mistake. Some of these are the same friends and relatives that actually believed the unsolicited phone call about the viruses detected on their computer by scanning the internet really came from Micro$oft Technical Support. After all, the caller ID showed "Redmond WA" on the screen, so it had to be legit. We can't fix stupid, or evil, using software or hardware. But Windows 10 is the silver bullet to kill stupid that some have been waiting for.

Wow, and I thought mods were supposed to be mature ones on Internet forums...
While you wanted to make a symbolic reference, nothing wrong with that, but you kinda did go over the top there.
IMO, should have just went with an actual dictator from IT world - Steve Jobs. That way we could have avoided all this stuff...

I don't disagree that he was a dictator from the IT world. But, then some overly sensitive Apple fanboy would have had an issue and whined about that. I think we can all agree that Hitler really was a dictator, someone most of the world hates and the embodiment of evil humanity at its worst. The symbolic reference to the dictatorship Micro$haft is building is still valid as far as I am concerned. Someone, somewhere, is always going to find a reason to be offended without respect to the context of the discussion or intent.

    This.

If the MS' approach seen in the upcoming OS was just an incident completely untied to numerous other infringements of freedom seen elsewhere, it would not deserve one tenth of the amount of vitriol that it has gotten from some of us around here. But it's not.

Revisiting John Carpenter's "They Live" might be in order, especially for the younger generation.

I tried windows 10, and just like windows 8, it lasted about half an hour on my main rig before it was wiped and replaced with Windows 7. I don't understand why MS simply can't improve the windows 7 kernel/subsystem and leave everything else the same. Start menu still not fixed, no aero glass, and high CPU tax. No thanks. I would have liked if Windows 7 could boot/shutdown as fast as windows 8 does, but oh well. an extra 10 seconds won't ruin my otherwise perfect computing experience. Easiest way to send MS this message? Just don't buy into their stuff, plain and simple. Unfortunately, it is hard to get the public to go along with that plan.

Well, I am going to install it, too. It just won't be my primary OS unless or until I decide it deserves to be. Multi-boot FTW. I had Windows 7, 8.1.1 and Windows 10 triple-boot setup on the M18xR2 and AW18 when I was still participating in the Windoze OS X Preview.

Really, the most grievous aspect of the whole thing is the forced updates. This suggests to me, essentially beyond the shadow of any doubt, that their motives and intentions are questionable. There is no reason for them to remove this functionality (see below) except to support an unspoken or clandestine agenda that they are not being forthright about. This is very disturbing to me and really should raise red flags in everyone's minds... noobs, power-users, geeks alike. There has to be an agenda, a back-door they are attempting to prop open permanently... something. If you don't smell a rat, your rat sniffer is messed up.

While it's entirely possible (or even likely) that Microsoft is doing exactly that and using forced updates to pave the way for a subscription-based OS, I disagree that such would be the only conceivable reason they'd make updates forced.

When you consider the vast numbers of problems Microsoft gets called with on a regular basis, if only half are problems that they already fixed and updated, but the user just hasn't installed them yet, then think of all the time and extra work they save if they force updates!

Have a spare W7Pro key, which I'll use for the "upgrade" (we'll see if it deserves the quotes or not). It's sad that I have to waste a perfectly useable W7 activation, but I nuked the W8 my first 8740w came with, without thinking that I can actually use the activation at some point. Oh well, it better deserves the sacrifice. With all said, main OS for years to come - W7U64.

I don't allow Windows Updates on my systems because they have caused me more grief with malfunction and performance degradation than anything else. As a result, I have a trouble-free experience with Windows 7 and 8. I stopped allowing Windows Updates a couple of years ago and my computing experience has never been this excellent at any point in the previous 20 years. This is the primary reason why I am livid about having their cancer rammed down my throat. Service Packs and an occasional critical security update, yes... I do those as I see fit, after creating an image of the drive first in case I don't like the outcome. But, carte blanche access to deposit their digital diarrhea into my OS on demand... absolutely not.

Actually, that's not too bad. That's about what I get with my 4930K 980M SLI under Windows 8.1 OS. http://www.3dmark.com/fs/5075905

That depends on which systems you are asking about. On my overclocked beasts, typically no. But, let me say right off the bat that I am definitely not advocating that others follow my lead on this. Doing so could be disastrous for the average PC user. If my system use and web browsing habits were like that of an average computer user, I would be having problems without a strong antivirus solution. My Alienware and Clevo systems are tweaked and tuned for performance. Security is a secondary concern and I guard their stability very closely to prevent them from being affected by my own behavior, or rogue software.

I understand there is a risk with that and take abnormal steps to guard against repercussions with these systems because they are running unprotected. All files with sensitive data are stored on removable media and there isn't much worth stealing in terms of data. They are powered off except for when I am using them, so they are not online 24/7. I use an encrypted password manager for my web browsers. I cannot remember the last time I had a problem with malware, but my web browsing is very limited, I seldom download programs, music or much of anything else. No file sharing, no torrents, etc. The risk is still present and real, but diminished and calculated with a recovery plan ready when I need it.

As you may have noticed from the system tray icon in the screen shot posted earlier, I do have Avast Pro installed under Windows 8.1.1 on the M18xR2 right now. (I got it for free from a good friend about a week ago and I am testing it.) But nothing on Windows 7 on the M18xR1, M18xR2 or AW18 and none under Windows 7 or 8 on the P570WM. Of course, Windows 8 has its own half-baked protection built in (Defender) and that's more or less it for my beasts.

Now, as for my other systems... all of the systems used by my family members are protected with an antivirus solution. But, none of them receive Windows Updates except those I choose to manually install. I mirror the updates deemed worthy of installation in my employer's enterprise environment and security updates are limited to those that are critical enough to warrant installation on the fleet of about 30,000 PCs. A small percentage of Windows Updates are necessary. The critical security updates rarely ever cause problems. The recommended updates and those Micro$haft claims to improve performance, "solve problems" or somehow magically enhance the experience are the ones to be especially careful with. I find that they seldom help and sometimes cause stability issues.

I do not think Windows 10, in it current iteration, is due for subscription. I think more along the lines of forced updates so they can test the waters with UI updates as they see fit too 2020, then extended support till 2025 etc..

Now 2020 coming along there will be a new version/model to purchase for mainstream support, that will most likely be the subscription base. As of right now they just have too many other fish to fry.

And here I was excited to try out windows 10... not so much anymore. My main computer is the one listed below in my sig, so I don't really want to experiment switching OS's back and forth but considering what I've read in this thread, it doesn't look like I'm going to be upgrading anytime soon. The whole forced updates is just dumb. I'll be looking to upgrade to a GTX 980M soon and I fear custom drivers won't be allowed.

The worst part about the Windows 10 is the UI, it became dull and boring with all the settings hidden, It's a mess & those window control buttons they look damn ugly, like a decade old design...looks worse over the Win8.1.1 and with this all metro vs win32, they destroyed the user customization and the power, but for what ??

Don't know why they are not emphasizing the Aero & Start which most of the userbase want back, then the bring user control to the OS, the fundamental feature.
Just want an OS which shares Win7's feature set and UX, a worthy successor.

And the update part, not all Windows10 versions affected by auto-update virus, Enterprise Edition has the exclusive access to update mechanism (2 channels like Pro but full control), If at all I decide to buy Win10 RTM or a machine with Win10 I'd get the Enterprise Edition only.

A user shouldn't have to buy Enterprise edition for what should be and has been a basic "feature", not even a feature, a necessity, since Windows 95 was introduced. And can just anyone buy Enterprise? Isn't that part of a volume license?

Usually your Professional version was the standalone Enterprise package minus all the deployment features.

Full retarded mode the M$ is now on. I guess we are doomed with win10 If things go south.. :vbconfused:
Square Enix today announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider will be available for Windows 10 and Steam in early 2016. And from the sounds of it, this will be yet another Windows 10-only title - DSOG

The company has confirmed the PC version of the game will arrive in "early 2016", while console exclusivity will last for a year. This means Rise of the Tomb Raider won't land on PS4 until "Holiday 2016", as the Xbox One and Xbox 360 versions are due for release on November 10, 2015 - IGN

Thanks to Micro$lop for destroying the gaming experience as well. Buying out the game devs , making it a timed exlcusive. Pure BS

    EDIT :
So it seems like the Win10-Enterprise ED won't be an option for end users. GG :(

Well, the majority never complained about they need/care root(for android), JB (for IOS) to get customization and power. The majority wins, that's how the world works.
The majority use their PC for 2 software, browser and office(or steam)

Arghhh, looks like resistance is gonna be futile! I personally don't mind about the forced updates if it doesn't break anything or degrade performance - although I know that there's never a guarantee that it won't, having said that I've accepted all Windows 7 updates and it never reduced my measured performance in games & benchmarks, if that same reliability continues in Win 10, then I guess I don't care!

But still this is a Computer OS not a Smartphone OS that needs to lock the user out...
And the Android is much much better over this Win10 regarding the user control xD

The XB1 & PS4 are not DX12 Hardware that can utilize the full DX12 feature set, but I think the game would be on both DX11 and 12..

I just checked out the E3 Video for Tomb Raider - it doesn't look complex to me - I don't think they need DX12 for that title - could easily be a DX11 game with no loss of quality or performance in my view. A Windows 10 only title is just a ploy to get people to upgrade to Windows 10 in my eyes - would they somehow be 'sponsored' by Microsoft for only releasing it on Win 10?

While I do own a couple of systems running W7 Enterprise I would prefer a simple move from W7 Pro to W10 Pro in a different set of circumstances.

Agree... "THIS" to all of the above.

I don't know how anyone has managed to get off completely scot-free from Windows Updates breaking things. Just for the hell of it, I pretended to be an ordinary consumer and I downloaded all pending Windows 8.1 updates yesterday. Since I had applied none, there were well over 100 updates. Guess what? (And, I already knew this was going to happen...) MULTIPLE issues, not the least of which Intel Extreme Tuning Utility was crashing with the faulting module being d3d9.dll LOL. ThrottleStop "stop responding" and I began having Windows lockups while web browsing. Behavior was the same with IE, Firefox and Chrome. NICE! I convinced myself what I already knew to be fact was, in fact, fact. Micro$lop making decisions for all Windows 10 users everywhere, using a Procrustean modus operandi, means there's going to be hell to pay. This is going to end very badly for some, especially those whose technical competence and skill set is incapable of transcending the scope of using a smartphone to make a YouTube "gaming laptop" unboxing video to share with their friends on Facebook.

Oh well... Macrium Reflect to the rescue. All back to square one with a virgin squeaky-clean Windows 8.1.1 installation with zero functionality or stability issues, and no Windows Updates carcinogens applied... and, fixed and ready to rumble in under 20 minutes no less. It's a miracle!

My hat's off to you. Seriously.

Some of us are going to wait and see whether you end up as King Pig, or a pulled pork sandwich.

    Good luck.

It is going to be a smartphone OS if you haven't noticed. :)

Indeed... a valid observation by many of us. In some cases, a 5.0GHz liquid cooled, 8-core/16-thread, multi-GPU 'smartphone' with a 20"+ inch display and 1.2kW "ac adapter" LOL. The derps at Micro$lop are finally hitting their stride... and all the Kool-Aid drinking derps rejoiced, prostrating themselves and crying in a loud voice, "Great and Holy is our Father in Redmond. For his Tile-laden majesty has redeemed us all from the dangers of the desktop, and his 'updates' endure to all generations."

I have only had one update issue and M$ still has not fixed it. On my P79xx with 260m there was one update that broke Aero Glass. Many other had complained as well but since M$ did not care about Aero Glass it seems they never fixed it at all.

Well as I mentioned (as in marketing to younger users), Windows 10 has its campaign going on. It is gearing towards kids and parents of young kids.

I've only had one Windows Update issue, and I've downloaded almost all of them. It was a Realtek sound driver, which breaks Dolby Home Theater if it's newer than a certain version. Aside from that, everything has worked swimmingly. I've had to fix (on other people's computers) more problems resulting from a required update NOT being installed than from an update that WAS installed.

Most of the issues I have had with updates relate to impaired performance, lowered benchmark scores, etc. It's really maddening when you run a few benchmarks, reboot so Windows Updates can finish and -BOOM- 30 minutes later you're 1500 or 2000 3DMarks less with the same settings and nothing fixes it other than going back to your pre-updated state. That experience happening more than once was a major influence in my decision to finally pull the plug on them a couple of years ago. Homey don't play dat.

I think some updates are released to fix botched updates, so that kind of fits with your observation. The fact that I don't allow them lets me avoid the patch to fix a patch to fix a patch scenario. None of them are "required" but *sigh* looks like that's about to change.

Out of curiosity (and this is a serious question), if performance is your highest priority and you don't typically install updates, why not stick with Windows XP? It uses much less overhead and less requirements than newer Windows versions, so performance should theoretically be higher. Or is it a matter of forced upgrades, such as the lack of DirectX 10 or 11 support, that prevents you from using XP instead of newer versions?

That part. There are too many things that don't work with Windows XP Pro x64, including a large number of the benchmarks. Windows 7 is what I consider the ideal OS. I'm going to install Windoze OS X in multi-boot so I can exploit what little it brings for certain things, such as DX12 benchmarks and games, but Windows 7 will continue to be my primary OS as it has in dual boot with Windows 8. I have updates disabled on 7 and 8.1.1 and I am really disappointed that I won't be able to do that with Windoze OS X. What I will likely end up doing is having multiple images. One with no updates and all of my software installed. Then another one with current updates applied until I reach the point of a drop in performance. I will use the image that doesn't include the updates that cause a drop in performance and simply restore that image, postpone them until they force themselves on my OS, then restore the image that has all of the updates up to the point of a performance hit. Then I can just keep restoring that image as many times as I need to for my system to run at optimal performance. Until DX12 games become prevalent, I anticipate I will use Windoze OS X about as frequently as I use Windows 8.1.1 right now, which is probably about an hour or two per month, mainly for Fire Strike benchmarks because it was engineered to work best on Windows 8.

I bet there will be some alternatives for update system. Breaking the OS integrity with auto update drivers / update packages..the worst case, this is just BS.!!
DX12 the only triumph card in this dirty game that M$ is playing. One un-official patch for Win7, 8.1.1 for DX12 boom goes M$ once and for all..

And focusing on kids in these new ad campaigns, welcome to Win X the Kiddo Kool-Aid OS

They are targeting kids as I am sure they already know this new OS/UI will not take the market by storm. The strategy then falls to a slower acclimation of use by younger kids not even able to type yet that facial recognition for login etc. can work for/benefit. The same with larger simplified screens such as Metro apps can provide.

This could backfire though, the reason being is that for those young guys there are plenty of learning tablets already and they are way cheaper than putting your kid in front of and leaving them alone with the expensive PC with all that personal data and files. While your kids may tug at your heart, when you get to the store (or on line) those commercials will not tug at your wallet.
