My P79xx had only IE9 because it broke Aero Glass. I finally had to install IE 11 and then update that one more time for the icon too show.

I wonder if the same 30 day trial applies to this direct method of upgrading? With the tool you linked there's the option to Upgrade an existing machine or create an iso - as Matrix Leader showed just now. I'm doing my backups & trying to decide whether to upgrade or not - I will if the same 30 day trial applies.

Downloaded the Windows 10 Pro 64 bit ISO and the latest Virtualbox 5.x, and built a VM with Virtualbox, which worked fine, up until I installed the Guest Additions, and then black screen - also black screen after reboot, and black screen after booting on the Windows 10 ISO and running Repair.

I will try VMware tools now as well.

Downloaded latest VMware Player, and Windows 10 installed and was able to be updated by VMware Tools, works fine in full screen :)

I will try Virtualbox later, it could be some setting I used in the hardware settings.

Yep, I'm doing that too now! I've just finished doing a backup image of my OS partition using Macrium Reflect, so I've got an easy & quick way of reverting to Windows 7 if all hell breaks loose!

EDIT: For those using a Samsung SSD, make sure you have RAPID disabled before you start upgrading to Windows 10, I read reports that RAPID causes problems in Windows 10 (BSODs, crashes, can't remember exactly - something along those lines!).

I think I'm going to keep the 10 preview installed. Unless Microsoft changed their mind again about letting Windows Insiders be able to keep 10. I haven't read the latest. I don't want to sacrifice my 8.1...

From what I've seen, it seems like Microsoft is going to block any keys that are upgraded unless they drop within 30 days... My Sager has a SLIC style key for 8.1 Pro.

I'm doing the upgrade process right now. It installed the initial Upgrades associated with the upgrade link provided above, and then it checked for updates & now it's downloading those updates - so to me it looks like the Day 1 patch is included. Note that this is all happening before it's updating my system from Win 7 to Win 10.

    @hfm , 3.31GB for the Windows-BT folder.

EDIT: Update Process Failed! Wimfltr v2 Extractor (wimserv.exe) Stopped Working in Event Log - hmm, re-downloading again now, will try once more, wondering if it's anything to do with my non-standard GPU. It failed during the actual install process after having downloaded everything.

EDIT#2: Update Process Failed again at the same point. Hmm, wondering if I should disable my 670MX and boot on iGPU, then do the upgrade process & then re-enable the 670MX. I have a feeling it's only failing due to my non-standard GPU that requires a modified inf to install. The Windows 10 upgrade Notification Icon Program (installed weeks ago) detected my 670MX was incompatible, so this adds to my suspicion of the failed upgrade. Thoughts anyone?

EDIT#3: Update Process Failed again at same point - this time with 670MX disabled & running off the iGPU. Hmm, don't know what's causing it to fail, not sure I want the hassle of trying a clean install at the moment. Anyone got any thoughts on why the install is failing, fails at 33% each time?

Here is the Windows Pro Update configuration, allowing deferring of updates, then I guess we Hide the ones we don't want, and complete the updates?

    windows 10 pro - defer updates.PNG

Seems odd, why not do it the way it was, list the updates and select the ones we want installed?

Now to subscribe to the Insider Updates so I have a free Windows Pro VM moving forward...

Quick Question (relates to the issues I'm having in my previous post): If I clean install Windows 10 on my OS partition (games and Windows Documents folder are currently saved on seperate drive in Windows 7), will that mess up the installation of the games because I noticed that lots of game config info is saved to the Document folder which is linked to the OS drive? But I have my Windows Document folder on a seperate drive, but even though that's not being overwritten by a clean install won't it affect the game installs as some of the games want to reference the Windows Document folder? I hope that makes sense, hard to explain.

My experience on upgrading a three year old Samsung notebook is here. It seems to have gone OK. It appears that Samsung put some effort into updating their drivers and software in spite of diminished presence in the notebook market. They made a mess of the Windows 8 launch.

My dilemma is whether to now put Win 10 on my Dell E7440. Either Dell are being very silent about Windows 10 compatibility or I've not been looking in the right place. According to this I need to be patient.

Download took 30 mins. From beginning the download to finishing the upgrade install, it took just under one hour. I clicked the link on one of the recent previous pages and downloaded the download tool. Downloaded as an ISO and burned to disk. Decided to be clever and open the ISO file from the desktop with 7Zip - ran the setup application and away it went (Although I'm happy to have the ISO also burned to disk).

Everything works well and I'm particularly liking the task view - something I liked in its OSX incarnation too. Some of the icons are sinfully ugly - the recycling bin in particular is just dire. I liked the flat style of Windows 8.1 but not overly sold on the new close, minimize and maximise buttons, although it's not a deal breaker and it's likely that there's a way to fix this. I resized the seach so it's just an icon instead of a big box and it's made the taskbar look a lot better (The icons look better for some reason that I can't be sure of) . I'm not 100% sold on the appearance but it has been growing on me as I have typed this message and there are no doubt ways to make it look better. The icons look strange but no odder than they looked in Windows 8.1 so I'm not shocked - although it would have been nice to see some effort in this area.

    My main annoyances are:
    1. The convoluted way in which the settings are placed - it was the main thing that annoyed me in Windows 8.1 and it's the same here. The main 'legacy' control panel has some settings but there are other control panels with other settings - Just one panel would be preferable. Still, it must be said that bashing 'device manager' into the seach dragged up the relevant destination with commendable speed.
    2. The auto update. I travel a fair bit and use mobile internet that has a relatively small bandwidth limit. I'd like to know the updates are there but be able to install them when I find an area with unlimited WiFi. Apparently I can set it as a metered connection and avoid it this way but I'm still not entirely impressed. I suppose it's not hard to flick the relevant setting to signal it as being a metered connection - some more use will make this obvious if it's a genuine problem.

Positive feedback so far and everything that worked in Windows 7, works in Windows 10, which is what is primarily important to me. I do wish that MS had made it look better but it's no big deal, for me.

Windows 10 upgrade installed, I chose to keep nothing, so it`s as close as an clean install as i can get at the moment.

I tried a boot clean install but i was asked for an key, I tried my oem win8 key and it was rejected, Now i have done the upgrade and it shows as registered can i rip the windows 10 key and do a clean install with it?

    Thanks

So far I've downloaded an ISO and made USB setup.
I've changed my plans. I'm now actually going to upgrade first to see how many of my current programs are compatible. If the answer is 'not many' i'll do a restore.

Managed to get Windows 10 installed, but just a black screen instead of a desktop, had to use Task Manager through Ctrl-Alt-Delete to get to File Explorer so I could even start changing things & finding out what was wrong. Somehow somethings gone screwy with the Update and I can't access the desktop properly or even the Windows Settings. I did manage to get to Device Manager (no yellow icons) in a round about way, and also Chrome by the round about way through Task Manager (hence managing to type this message), but I can't seem to fix the desktop - just a black unresponsive screen with no taskbar or anything - only means of interacting with PC is through Ctrl-Alt-Del & Task Manager interface. Managed to install Windows 10 NVidia driver - still no change. Think I might try a reset, anyone got any ideas before I do that?

Yep, I see a mouse cursor if I move the mouse, but literally no clicks are registered until I start Ctrl-Alt-Del then Task Manager, then I can right click on a process and click 'Open File Location', and then from there I can start doing stuff and accessing the PC, but the desktop just isn't working - it's very strange! The only way I can interact with the PC is through the Task Manager and the settings that that UI enables me to access.

    You MUST upgrade first.
When you do a clean install after upgrading from an older version you only need the stock key. Your activation is tied to your hardware, there is no key and you don't need one.
Well except for the stock one...

    Code:
    Windows 10 Home build 10240 - TX9XD-98N7V-6WMQ6-BX7FG-H8Q99

    Windows 10 Pro build 10240 - VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

SL2 what are the key at the bottom of your post for? when you say stock key, do you mean my HP oem windows 8 key that was pre-installed on my notebook.

    Thanks

    John

EDIT: An Windows update fixed my problem, who would guess Microsoft would get something right.

No, in order to perform a clean install you must already have done the upgrade, and you need a stock key (the latter is similar to W8.1 IIRC).

    - Begin with an activated Windows 7/8.1 installation.
    - Start the Windowes 10 upgrade from within the current Windows.
    - When the installation is finished, your free upgrade is tied to your hardware.
    - When you want to do a clean install you'll need the stock key.

Just a thought - Were you upgrading from Windows 8.x with Start Is Back installed? The reason I ask is because I have had the black screen happen to me, and it was because the version of SIB I had on the machine was out of date. Uninstalling it fixed the problem.

Same here. No issues at all. Immediate thoughts were it feels like a windows 8 version of windows 7... at least visually.
No sure what I think yet. I'm pretty impressed everything runs. I did have to install my Nvidia drivers again.

Thanks for that idea, I'm on Windows 7 though. Good news is that the 'Reset' option while retaining personal files worked - I can now access the desktop, and everything is working fine for me in Windows 10 now - just need to download my applications & sort out my settings. Good stuff! The hassle free upgrade option didn't work for me though, so be warned if everyone thinks they can get away with a simple upgrade!

So does that mean retail keys are converted to OEM? If so I may need a rethink as that would mean you can't move your license to another computer or upgrading becomes a problem especially for those who build their own desktops.

OK, so looks like I've sucessfully transferred to Windows 10 bar a few more programs & settings. What are you guys using for your Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver on Windows 10? On the Intel website I can only find a RAID driver that is specifically for Windows 10 - I'm after an AHCI driver.

It does not like my P79xx. Originally it was a Vista Home system upgraded to Windows 7 Home and then an upgrade to Windows 7 pro though the control panel. Now it does not like the key in then system as is. So I guess I will not bother trying it out, at least for now.

Well, took the plunge on my GS60, install went smoothly... so far liking what I see, but still learning the tweaked interface.

So yesterday I had the "Windows 10 is ready to install" - It's tried to update 6 times today - and each time it fails?
I uninstalled an 8.1 update file - rebooted and had no problems updating the uninstalled 8.1 file....
I tried to reset the system - but there's a message about "missing media"? I also tried a restore point which fails - Any ideas would be appreciated :banghead

Anyone done an ISO install yet as opposed to upgrade?

Well, I just hit a huge problem for my workflow... OneDrive apparently has lost the ability to switch between "available offline" and "on-line only" mode.

Is there a solution to this, am I just confused, or is this a terrible design change they made? This essentially kills OneDrive for me, and is enough to go back to 8.1 alone.

i noticed that in preview builds it would default to the my docs on onedrive and not on the local drive. i suggest unlinking onedrive if you want to save locally.
