If you don't mind me asking, what happened to your display that it needed to be swapped? Did it get physically damaged from an accident, or is there a possibility Windows 10 damaged it as it has to some other Clevo and Alienware notebooks?

It (thankfully) wasn't necessary. My replacement P651SG was shipped out with a different panel to the one I was expecting. I had specifically asked my reseller if they had the one I wanted in stock before purchasing, as I had researched the available FHD panels extensively to ensure I bought only the best. They assured me that it was in stock. So after informing them of this mixup they agreed to swap the panel to the original one I was expecting all along. It's taking a while, but I think they need to swap the entire motherboard around because the original panel was LVDS but the new one is going to be eDP. I hope it's going to be worth the hassle and inconvenience! :)

Wow, do you think M$ is worrying about people jumping ship?

    http://news.softpedia.com/news/is-w...e-reason-enough-to-move-to-linux-490825.shtml

This seems to be their response so far, still does not address looking at all local files accessed by the file explorer. Nor the fact they say all these other people are allowed to only use the info to improve M$ products but this is NOT IN THE EULA!

In the end they need an option to fully keep their hands, eyes and ears off of our files.

So @Mr. Fox I think you might be interested in this as you showed me one earlier with Metro. Seems in some cases Linux might be better for gaming. I don't think you are one to play games like DoTA 2, but it's nice to see Windows 10's glory getting creamed, and the user even complained that the benchmark a lot in Windows and he had to run it over and over (he was using a demo file). If this translates into more games and people start coding with Vulkan instead of DX12, things might go quite well.

I have to say the difference there is pretty large. That would really hurt M$ if Linux in time proves to be a better gaming platform. Not just for their PC OS but in time for consoles as well being as someone will come up with one based on Linux.

That could be the Steam OS advantage right, that's based on Linux right? If Steam OS does productivity half decently as well as gaming, then I guess that could be an option.

Many WINE-supported titles run faster under Linux even with DX emulation, and it has been like this for years. Did anyone care?

Not before as wine is not 100% but now with W10 some will. In time as support grows compatibility with developers will as well. This will not happen overnight but in time could.

Unfortunately, WINE isn't perfect, and not every program emulates properly. If every program did emulate properly and I could do everything I want to do in Windows while in Linux without any headache, I wouldn't even be considering Windows.

If WINE did everything, they would release a 3rd party version of Windows. :p

Tons of things WINE needs to do are technically workarounds or compromises that take the away the advantage in comparable Linux/GNU designs. So if they really made everything work like Windows it probably will work just like Windows, if not worse. Both security and performance will take a hit. In that case you might as well use the real Windows.

Beside inherent complications involved in translating those different systems calls and services, some times the original Windows design may even deliberately keep bugs in the code to keep existing software compatible (WINE devs found plenty of them). This is considered a strength for MS, but WINE can't go that far.

BTW, if anyone has used WINE but not in terminals, try launching your app through a terminal emulator and watch those "fixme" warnings. They can be funny at times.

Windows 10 just breathed new life into my old Inspiron 17R... Its incredibly smooth, especially compared to 8.1 that it was running. It has some merit on older machines. I won't be running it for a long time on my Sager though. In fact, the memory footprint is pretty impressive - with Edge and 8 tabs open, I'm sitting at 1.9GB of RAM usage. There is no noticeable lag, even on flash heavy pages.

Keep in mind that I used the O&O software called Shutup 10 to turn off all privacy invasion, forced updates, and I am running a local account.

    Specs

Core i5-2450M 2.5/3GHz dualcore with hyperthreading.
    8GB DDR3-1333
    750GB 5400RPM HD
    Intel HD 3000

Mind you, Windows 8.1 was a total disaster area on this machine, even after I did a full system reset. It was extremely slow. I upgraded to Windows 10 and then wiped out the entire system and did a clean install. Not even XP was so smooth on this machine...

I would say Windows 10 isn't bad in all situations, this is actually smoother than Linux...

As an OS W10 is not bad, it is the privacy and update issues. If those two did not exist the probability is I would be running it.

No privacy or update issues to speak of using the O&O Shutup 10. I am actually really impressed... Stutter-free 1080p playback and mostly stutter-free 4K on YouTube... 1080p stuttered on Windows 8.1, lots of audio latency too. Even better, the 8.1 drivers seem to work just fine. I used the Dell Alps driver for 8.1 to get my touchpad working, I installed the latest Intel 8.1 driver and it works without any issues, and to top it all off, my CPU runs cooler than it did in 8.1 or 7.

Don't risk it on your Alienware... They still haven't figured out what the LCD corruption issue is and there's actually evidence that W10 is interfacing with the BIOS and corrupting the NVRAM... Its not worth the risk right now.

I believe that Mr. Fox has now burned out 4 panels despite every fix that has been suggested.

I just wanna add in this fact (I don't know if it's been posted already) that even on older OSes, even without your consent, WINDOWS IS DOWNLOADING ITSELF IF ITS PREP UPDATES ARE INSTALLED.

This means that without clicking for the update; without asking for it to be done, without registering for the free update, it will STILL download itself onto your drive, using up many peoples' data caps and small OS SSD space with ~20GB of files. And people keep deleting the files and it keeps re-downloading them.

This is known as "getting in your adversaries head, and messing about"

There is likely no real connection between events, but when your mind is focused on hammers, everything looks like a nail.

It's good to refocus on other things to keep perspective.

But, yeah, they are likely in a War Room up in Redmond, putting clippings of our forum responses up on a wall, and drawing up new battle plans to subvert our feeble efforts by playing with our minds.

If update is still on, is it possible to somehow trick the update system to think the files are already there, like replacing the several G's of files with much smaller ones? How about symb linking the files from a SSD system drive to a HDD data drive?

The only goal here is saving storage space on the SSD.

I don't know if this is a bug on all windows 10 or just me:

The response time for a keyboard shortcut action to open a program or folder is terribly slower than that on 7 or xp. I have set the shortcut for example of ctrl+alt+n to open notepad. I always click on this whenever i need to quickly jot down notes or remove text formatting. Starting on win10 and even on the latest updates, it takes anywhere from 2-4 seconds to open the program. rarely does it open instantly. In win7 and xp it is instant; I know because I still have windows with 7 and xp on them. I have other shortcuts as well pointing to a folder.

it's irritating and I'm hoping to find a solution.

Now run the Disk Clean up tool then select the clean System Files button, then select to clean everything including Windows Updates cleanup.

After rebooting, run Windows updates again and hide the bad updates if they show up again.

Is it just me or is the MS server being overwhelmed by Win 10 downloads? Tried to download 8.1 ISO with the media creation tool but it can't connect.

Edit: It's back online for me. Speed is terrible though. ETA 7 hours.

That's because they want you to get frustrated and give up and just install Windows 10 .
    Just speculating
    But you never know.

Very true, the same way they are crippling the Windows updates, takes about 20 mins just to start downloading a single update on Windows 7. On Windows 10, it's super fast.

I have been following stats counter on a daily basis. It seems after the school starts growth for the last couple of days is holding at 7.3% for the month. It could be the new student systems and/or those students who turned the old ones back on after the summer break and upgraded (or not) or just a fluke in general.
