They re really stupid considering the current position of them in the market this only hurts them more. Honestly what's happening at M$, the moment Bungie left the HALO died, now after the massive failure of Win8 they rolled that 8.1 but this GWX is a total disaster, although most of the people out there are using the WinX without knowing any jack. Long back M$ decided to buy the one and only one Jailbreaking tool a.k.a Chevron unlocker and now the smartphone OS is dead disseminated nothing can revive it.
If Microsoft wants to survive, profits maximization is a long shot why the heck they are following the suit of Apple, they used to be great back when Ballmer was there, I think the new CEO and BOD members are super ignorant $$$deepocket morons. I would blame the dumb users as well they just gulp everything down and when it's too late they just burst into tears like a baby.
Ok, the one core rule sounds great but with all this nasty malware tricks and performance hindering & hidden B$ is just too much.
Micro$lop should be transparent and be friendly with the community and enthusiasts locking down everything is very bad ( WDDM2.0, DX12, store sandbox exlc b$) else the Vulkan will tear them apart slowly, Steam is already prepping their game up with the Vive and Steam OS also first Valve game fully in the Vulkan beta track (Dota2 - Source2 Engine, now if they make the HL3 the M$ will fall with their stupid HALO franchise and the data mining Cortana, and the great ad platform, the XB1).Last edited: May 26, 2016Papusan and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -
Has M$ run out of new ideas in their new modern pastel junk?
http://www.pcworld.com/article/3075...s-run-two-antivirus-programs-on-their-pc.html An additional virus program in Win X should have been run against the virus itself. Or perhaps the Redmond Morons have found that Win 10 is not safe enough?
Last edited: May 27, 2016 -
That feature is called "Limited Periodic Scanning" which allows Windows Defender to run periodically manual scans only which of course negates protection capabilities making it a fancy titled joke instead of anitivirus (you say it always was?).
Looks like you can run a hundred of antiviruses if they are just spy-scans simply named as antiviruses.
BTW, an update about my win10 installation on lenovo t410. You 're not gonna beli (who am I lying to?) will believe this for sure because after update with saving personal files only (Win7 BSODed when I chose saving apps and settings too) it finally updated to... a blank black screen with "error 4: HDD not initialised" - it's what I saw this morning.
Then I rebooted, it updated drivers and again blank black screen! Then I rebooted and it worked... till next reboot I couldn't load win10 at all! Just blanking cursor on a black screen each boot.
Do you know what is the funniest? When I tried to fix it with win10 troubleshooter on the USB flash drive it simply said it couldn't after a minute of "trying".
So now I clean installed it and... whenever I try to update win10 (for drivers and peace of mind) it gives me an error and asks to try again later or contact a support
At least it activated without a hitch... activated pile of junk.
ADDED: Not a surprise why Lenovo officially cleaned their hands out of it telling T410 and even T420! (Sandy-Bridge) are not supported.Last edited: May 27, 2016 -

New Low for Microsoft: Removes the ‘X’ Button from Windows 10 Upgrade Dialog
http://wccftech.com/new-low-for-microsoft-windows-10-forced-upgrades-continue/
"Even after constant user complaints about the behavior of Microsoft’s GWX app, the company is still persistent on forcing Windows 7 and 8.1 users to install Windows 10 – no matter what the cost. In a recent such attempt, Redmond has introduced new changes that will make it more difficult to avoid Windows 10 forced updates on your computer.

While I'm happily running Insider 14352 right now, I honestly can say that I am not at all surprised and actually expected Microsoft to make a forced push to 10 in the last two months that its free. Many will be waking up to Windows 10 saying hello when they don't want it. Wouldn't surprise me if in the last month, Microsoft announces they are dropping support for all non-enterprise customers running Windows 7/8.1 and the upgrade force installs itself immediately. Ugh.hmscott likes this.

that's why I think unless one has a major reason to stay on 7/8, it's best to upgrade/clean install Windows 10 and be done with it.Ethrem likes this. -
I'm in the same camp really. Microsoft has added settings to disable almost all of their tracking without actually breaking things in the system and the 14352 build disables Defender when I have Avast installed which saves me the annoyance of their ridiculously inferior product slowing down my system.
I really don't have any complaints. I had one issue that I couldn't figure out since updating to this Insider Preview - Steam stopped showing the browser. A quick search told me to turn off DirectWrite in the preferences and it immediately started to work again. I've *NEVER* had Windows idle at 1% CPU usage and its only doing that because Steam, Chrome, VLC and HWiNFO64 are stealing a few CPU cycles (despite VLC doing nothing, its just paused). 8.1 was always kicking up doing things in the background, drove me nuts.
Still though, I don't agree with what Microsoft is doing. Mainly because 10 is actually a really good OS once you have it configured how you like. I haven't had one single BSOD that wasn't related to an unstable overclock and I've been running 10 on my desktop since RTM.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -

Try this
Go to the folder where Steam is installed.
Delete everything within folder except the steamapps folder and the Steam.exe file
now, run Steam.exe.
It will update itself again and place all the files it needs
you have to re-login but this will solve weird issues such as the ones you are facing and will also solve the issue where even if one has his Steam Password saved, it will always prompt for a password upon re-launch. Doing this fixes it.
lemme know if that fixes the Steam Browser issue you're having.Ethrem likes this. -
Nah I completely removed and reinstalled Steam, even upgraded to the beta. As soon as I turned off DirectWrite, the browser loaded up the store immediately. Must just be a broken hook that Valve hasn't bothered to fix for Insider builds since its been reported across a range of them. It works perfectly now, albeit with slightly less smooth fonts - and who cares about that when you spend less than a quarter of a quarter of a percent in the browser
-
Spartan@HIDevolution Company Representative
I always wondered what that DirectWrite does anyway, I always have it enabled but always wondered why is it disabled by default.Ethrem likes this. -
Mine was enabled by default. Could be a 10 glitch.
DirectWrite uses DirectX to rasterize fonts. Basically, it just smooths them out. Chrome, Firefox, and Edge all use it which is why the fonts in older apps look like crap in comparison.
Actually, its a bit more than that. See https://blog.mozilla.org/nattokirai/2011/08/11/directwrite-text-rendering-in-firefox-6/
Very nice explanation.alexhawker, hmscott and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -
W10 may be considered a good OS once configured but until work product is eliminated from the EULA it is just a no go for me. Today there may be options and tweaks but until the agreement is fixed it just takes M$ a quick change of heart to make this a total nightmare. I am sorry but I still do not trust them and the way upgrades are being forced does nothing to make matters any better.
In the end my files are just that, the OS has no reason to look at them other than in house tasks.Same can be said of my emails etc.. I will use a smart phone etc. where privacy is not a concern, M$ just does not get this. -
I think it's those who still trust microsoft should feel sorry in eyes of society.

I'll be clean installing Windows 10 on two SSDs which were previously used with Bitlocker encryption. If I just delete their current partitions during the install, and create new ones and install OS right away, will they be properly TRIM'ed? Or do I need to put each of them as secondary drives in some machine, delete the partitions and leave them alone for some hours?

Microsoft Loses Unauthorized Windows 10 Upgrade Court Case, And So It Begins
by Brandon Hill — Monday, June 27, 2016
"If you’re among the likely millions of Windows customers running Windows 7 or Windows 8 that are sick of the Windows 10 nag screens along with unprompted and forced upgrades, you’ll be happy to hear that at least one “little guy” has won a battle against Microsoft in court.
Teri Goldstein claims that her computer was forced into upgrading to Windows 10 shortly after it became available during the summer of 2015 — all without her authorization.
“I had never heard of Windows 10,” Goldstein told The Seattle Times. “Nobody ever asked me if I wanted to update.”
To make matters worse, once Windows 10 was installed, it left her computer unstable and was prone to frequent crashes. According to Goldstein, her computer became unusable, which is problematic news considering that she uses the machine to run a travel agency.
So Goldstein decided to do what the majority of other hapless Windows 10 victims were unwilling to do: sue Microsoft. She decided to battle the deep-pocketed software giant in court, citing lost wages and the need to purchase a replacement computer.
Much to our surprise, and likely to the surprise of Microsoft, Goldstein actually won her case.
When Microsoft decided not to bother with an appeal (in order to avoid dumping more money into the litigation), Goldstein was awarded damages in the amount of $10,000."

Microsoft’s Chinese Users Also Complaining About Overly Aggressive Windows 10 Push
"Sometimes, it's amazing - potentially jaw-dropping - to see huge companies make really boneheaded decisions. A great example of this came to us this past week when Microsoft rolled out an update to its Windows 10 upgrade mechanism in Windows 7 and 8 that could automatically start the process of the upgrade by closing the dialog box. It seems crazy to even say out loud!
...
As it happens, it's not just those in western countries miffed at Microsoft's decision - users in China are likewise upset. This was reported by the Xinhua news network, and the results are astounding.
According to Reuters, the number of posts critical of Microsoft's move here totals 1.2 million on the microblogging site Weibo. That's nothing short of mind-boggling, and it's just the proof we need to know that Microsoft really screwed up here.
What's really interesting about this move is that Microsoft didn't just try to trick users on these shores; it did the same thing in countries that are already really timid of Microsoft's business practices.
In one breath, the company creates a special version of Windows 10 for the Chinese government, so as to quell the country's concerns, and in the next, it tries to trick regular users into executing a major upgrade on their PCs.
...
All around, Microsoft's move here is baffling. It's understandable that the company would want to encourage users to upgrade, but by tricking them? That's a definite hit below the belt."

" mosquitoguy • a month ago
what's really ironic is that Windows 8 and 10 were built on the premise of unifying desktop and mobile -- and the mobile part is now virtually dead, so there's no practical reason at all to use any windows higher than 7 other than different looking fonts and shuffling all the important icons so you can't find them." -

Well it does kinda set a precedent for other cases - a precedent that Microsoft 'should' pay out in other cases too, I'm surprised they bowed down & payed her. (Not saying she didn't deserve being paid.)toughasnails and hmscott like this. -
How do you defend the indefensible? My guess here is it would be too much to one off defend these cases, what they want is a class action to defend against. In this way it is drug out way longer, becomes a harder target to pin a single issue against, is much easier to drown out in frivolous motions etc. etc. etc..toughasnails likes this.

Although I think I remember reading from Microsoft that Windows 10 would be free for anyone 'upgrading within the first year', and that it would remain free from that point on for those people (for the lifetime of their hardware) - I think this would exclude the possibility of a subscription.

I think I'll create a disk image of my current Windows 8.1 install, remove my registry edits to block GWX, upgrade to Windows 10, and make an image of that and keep it somewhere safe. Then I'll run Windows 8.1 until M$ kills it, and force myself to swallow the bitter pill and jump to Win 10 (or whatever M$ has in a decade's time).
hmscott likes this. -
By the time Windows 8.1 is OOS, in that many years Windows will be much different.
No need to waste time on it now.
Besides, why get it on file at MS that you agreed to and accepted the Windows 10 EULA? Better to never have accepted those terms.
Besides, $120 for Windows 10 is a good barrier to future nonsense that convinces you to run Windows 10; make it cost $ to upgrade - that'll stop you for sure
-
Ionising_Radiation ?v = ve*ln(m0/m1)
Well, there's Direct3D 12, which M$ unfortunately refuses to support on anything less than Windows 10. Relying only on Vulkan will be a dead-end. Not many games now use OpenGL, and not many games from now will use Vulkan.
Anyway, we shall see. For now, Windows 8.1 does everything I need it to. I've even got a (legit, I checked with MS Support) Windows 8.1 Pro key off G2Play for about $35 for my next computer, giving me total control with GPEdit, BitLocker and so on.
I hopped on the Windows 8 bandwagon very early, installing the Windows 8 Technical Preview back in late 2011 (five years ago) on my Lenovo T61. That was when the Start screen was optional and Windows Aero was fully included; they got rid of the latter during the Release Preview. Now, I'm pushing back my (free) upgrades as long as I possibly can, with even my hackintosh running only Mavericks.

Not exactly side-splitting, and besides who doesn't know how to use Windows 10 after using Windows 7, even my parents who are pensioner technophobes didn't need to be shown anything when they switched from Windows 7 to Windows 10. -
While agreed W10 is not as bad as 8.x on the user learning curve the problems with W10 are numerous. People just do not want or need the hassle and some pay to get rid of said issue.
Mr. Fox, Papusan, hmscott and 1 other person like this. -
Other than impaired physics performance, my latest WIM hacked version of Windows OS X Malware Edition is not too bad. I don't really see any learning curve, other than sometimes having to look for something because it got moved somewhere else. I guess that was so they could have some kind of basis for claiming to be offering a new product.
This WIM hacked version has everything I find most objectionable stripped out of the installation file content. Cortana, telemetry, forced Windows Updates, Windows Store, all Modern Apps and the rest of the utterly worthless garbage is not disabled... it's just totally gone and no longer exists in any form. So, with the trash taken out and hauled to the dump, I find it acceptable at this point. Sans the filth, there is still a lot of work to do as far as cleaning up the tacky UI, adding Aero transparency and colorization options, a legitimate Start menu, etc. Now all I need to figure out is how to restore the emasculated physics performance and it will be Windows 7.1 for all intents and purposes. No thanks to the Redmond Nazis. It should not be this difficult to have a decent OS. Based on their behavior since Windows 8 was released, it's abundantly clear that they just don't give a rat's heiny what their customers want.Ashtrix, toughasnails, Papusan and 2 others like this. -

Because Enterprise Edition doesn't have full pack of gimmicks. I heard it doesn't even have Windows Store, didn't check deep though.

I wonder if the $7/user can be applied to machines rather than users (like CALs) for companies like Universities where many users share PCs (in labs, classrooms, etc.)? We have ~50 PCs and growing, but ~700+ users and growing, so it's worth us to consider $7/month, but not if it's for users rather than machines.
