None of the above are true, and yet people eat this up like candy. It used to be that the latest from MS "was" the greatest, but that no longer is true. I love bleeding edge tech as much as the rest, but the last few years have been major steps back in OS development.

The funniest bug I've seen so far is having the native Windows 10 Apps stop working, such as Calculator and Photos. They'll launch and almost instantly close out.

Not really. I've seen and just skimmed over Windows 10 in various tech shops in malls here, but that was literally just launching games from the desktop to check out their performance.
Microsoft killed what made Windows so popular - literally every hardware combination just plugged in, and worked.
Why the hell did they have to screw with the UI so much? Every under-the-bonnet change they made to Windows 10 (or even 8), they could've done with Windows 7. XHCI? DX12? Proper SSD and NVMe support? Even the 'Mission Control'-esque thing? Power savings? Everything could've been done with a service pack to Windows 7. Apple did it with Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Hell, I heard they even re-factored Finder for the new 64-bit kernel.
For now, StartIsBack and AeroGlass on Windows 8.1 is good enough for me. I haven't gotten a single nag to upgrade to Windows 10, not even the GWX icon, because the first thing I did when I clean-installed Windows earlier this year was to make the registry edit to disable downloading major Windows upgrades. I am a happy camper.
I actually dread the time when I have to upgrade, because M$ says they won't have drivers for older versions of Windows on newer CPUs.
Screw them.Last edited: Aug 27, 2016Solo wing, Raiderman, toughasnails and 2 others like this. -
That CPU thing would be very minor I presume, Considering the Speed Shift Technology (SST) on Skylake and Win10, there was some hassle regarding that, But M$ backtracked on B$ and they gave full support to the Win7, 8.x too but I think It may have been in update packs. Same here too registry tweak to break win updates forever & a few others (Win8.1 update 1 Sep 2014 build here with Classic Shell, Aero Glass), Unfortunately at some point we might need the updates...Now that cumulative crap is coming too very unfortunate, Even the LTSB is going to be refreshed every year which makes the Win10 very volatile & unreliable in the long run, Bright side at-least we have this LTSB else we are completely out of options. Fcuk you Micro$h!t.
Also the latest Clevo Pascal refresh on Skylake might be the last to run 7 without any trade-offs (like USB 3.0 installation etc on normal pc's was not possible) except that NVMe crap, Tbh I don't want an NVMe SSD over SataIII considering my usage scenarios or even complex ones, that drive throttles too under heavy load defeating the purpose. Also thanks to Prema for bringing up that SST tech from Intel to BIOS of the Phoenix / ZM / DM series.
Hope one day someone rips off that DX12 off the Win10 and get it done into the older stable PC Oses

This is another reason I suggest buying M.2 SATA drives instead of M.2 PCIE drives.
The other reasons are that the M.2 SATA drives are less than 1/2 the cost for the same size.
And in day to day tasks you won't notice the SATA III vs PCIE x4 speed difference.
You aren't getting much value for the 2x $ spent - although you are getting lots of extra heat

Superb. I mean, beyond a certain point, increasing data transfer rates become unnoticeable in day-to-day tasks, especially for gamers - who hardly ever do heavy-duty daily disk transfers. And even if one did large, continuous file transfers... one would be better off with hard disk drives which don't deteriorate with writes.
PCIe drives are nice, but I think the bus is better off serving network and graphics add-on cards, or driving displays.hmscott likes this. -
Actually they can/do deteriorate with use just not at a predictable rate/usage.

Meh, it's their, Intel and AMD, loss.
People will just stick to old CPUs. -
I'm wondering if AMD might benefit from this. Word is that Zen's performance is very good and might give AMD a much needed boost. If Zen works well on 10 perhaps more enthusiasts/gamers will seek out AMD chips.
MS cutting off support for 7 and 8.1 isn't surprising since they tried but backpeddled the same thing on Skylake. I'm curious how much of this is mutual and how much of it is MS aggressively wielding their influence.
I'm hoping to build an AMD-powered computer in ~3 years. I've been thinking I'll just use Linux and abandon Windows, at least for desktop use (and keep a Windows laptop handy). But it's good to know I'll be able to get the full Win 10 experience on AMD!
-
That's gonna put a dent in Intel and AMD sales, why upgrade when it also involves an OS upgrade / cost as well.
Applications that need Windows 7/8.1 need to be upgraded $$$, all just to satisfy MS's insane rage quit on supporting Windows 7/8.1 through the promised life-cycle to the end.
Gonna need to wait till Windows 10 gets sorted out, finally and without telemetry, before venturing into new hardware.
Gonna get a lot more life out of my hardware investments than I thought, good for me, saving $$$$'s.
Maybe some nice government and corporate lawyers will help Microsoft see the error of their ways? -
Would be funny to see a BOXed AMD processor which comes not just with stock cooler but with Win10 OS
And about AMD Zen. We had the same with Polaris: there were promising words about its performance and in fact it even had partially showed it on Dx12 but... it was only partial and it was still so-so in general and Dx11 is even worse, not mentioning other bad stuff like... who wants a burnt CPU socket on his motherboard due to failed specs?Ethrem, Raiderman, Papusan and 1 other person like this. -
Well we know that the Intel is ready to shaft us with Micro$shaft but AMD wth, Honestly why would they want to rip themselves off by not supporting the most popular/stable Windows OSes, No one from my knowledge use Win10 in their Enterprise environment why would even they opt for the rolling update to screw all their complex environment, Let alone the LTSB go, That was also a non stable release.
Btw I think the CPUs will definitely support except a few Instruction set but the main issue will be with the chipsets. -
Arent all xbox one systems powered by AMD? That is how MS will bend them to their will. "If you dont do as we say, then no more sales for xbox's". Something I wouldn't put past them.

Want to see what happens when an OS doesn't support a chipset? Try booting a macOS USB injected with an AMD kernel but otherwise vanilla and try to boot it on an AMD machine. Depending on the motherboard SATA controller, it may not even find the hard drive and that's IF you make it to that point of the installation. My bet is you would be stuck at still waiting for device when the handoff of the USB host controller happens and the kernel can't communicate with it anymore. At worst you'll get a nice kernel panic.Ionising_Radiation, Papusan, Ashtrix and 1 other person like this.

Patched Kernels
This page is a list of patched kernels for OS X. You are encouraged to add any missing information to help make this list complete! Please only add kernel-CPU combinations you or someone else have tested; don't just add a a CPU or kernel because it exists.
Two types of patches exist: binary and source. A binary patch (binpatch) is used when the target CPU is completely compatible with the stock mach_kernel, but its CPUID is not whitelisted (i.e. Intel Atom).
Source patches are used for CPUs such as AMD, legacy Intel, or VIA that differ significantly from supported CPUs—these might need instruction set emulators, for example. Certain Apple programs do not work correctly with source patched kernels.[ clarify]

Microsoft changed the driver framework with the AU. Back porting chipset drivers isn't going to be a walk in the park.

Everything is being herded in this direction for a reason.....Control, plain and simple, and with control you lose imagination, development, and creativity. The days of tweaking your Microsoft OS to your liking are most likely on the way out. As new builds come out (like Android), they will continue to lock down windows 10 more and more. Remember Android is open source, but that has not stopped them from locking it down. So as the sheep continue to march towards the unseen cliff, I will continue to be the goat. Welcome to the Matrix my friends!
-
What are you talking about locking down Android? It's just as open as it's ever been. The phone makers and service operators are the ones that lock it down.
Keep buying Google (Nexus) phones, or other models sold unlocked, and you don't need to worry about getting locked out of your phone.
There are lots of choices for unlocked Android devices, just look around.
There are more and more technically savvy people in the general population, and next generation is coming on strong not putting up with this crap, so it's going to keep getting better, not worse.
We may lose Windows as a footnote in history, but that's ok too

"According to one analyst, Richard Windsor, Google’s already working on a solution: dump AOSP, the Android Open Source Project, in favor of a new, completely proprietary Google Android. As UK tech site The Registerexplains: “Windsor says that a highly confidential internal project is underway to rewrite the ART runtime, removing any lingering dependencies from the freely downloadable open source AOSP (Android Open Source Project) code base.” If and when the courts rule in Oracle’s favor, Google then has a perfect excuse to give OEMs a simple choice: Google’s way or the highway."
It's a bunch of BS to get clicks, nothing new.
Google is changing things all the time, but the one thing they haven't changed is supporting open source and open OS's.
If Google made that mistake, then they would suffer a great drop in support as a result.
Google would lose the huge developer following they have, and become another footnote in history.
Must be the time for many kamakazi actions by foolish corporations...or dreamed up by click hungry web sites...

Yeah I get that they are not supporting the AOSP parts anymore, browser, messaging etc. And they had added the DMVerity stuff too back with KK and now It has full implementation of Secure boot type of thing with MM, thanks to the Samsung for locking the bootloader and OS to have kernel panic. And more of in your face G branding with the new purported launcher and navbar with google colors, It's actually them shafting with the Open Source moniker, New news is that Pixel phones are here this year, dropping the Nexus (With those HTC iPhones instead of Dev friendly Sony) & this filthy feat with the SystemUI b$
edit : http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/09/project-ara-googles-modular-smartphone-is-dead/
Google made a double edged sword out of Android, It hurts them too thus those restrictions, I strongly believe the XDA community is very large and moving forward with more of AOSP branches, CM has the best repository to serve as a base, Also existing of dev-friendly OEMs - OP and Sony (Honestly google should have gone with them this time), This could contain the G Beast in check for a few years at-least.
I think Winblows / Micro$haft doesn't have this edge of huge XDA type base, just a few power users at MDL but It won't be simple like the ol days anymore once the old software / hardware phases out (2020-23 - Prolly we will be at 7nm node and Haswell-Skylake along with Win7/8.1 would be EOL, more rise in consoles).
Hope we can have some good ffs, the thing is people need to wake up and realize, stop buying that Samsung crap / M$ WinX / <Insert any stupid anti-consumer practice>

Remember, so long as Android is based on Linux in some form, they are still effected by the license agreement. M$ is not plagued by that issue. Even with the moves to lock down Android, they still have limits and alternative Linux based phone platforms will pop up if they go too far or don't give a similar product in moving away from a Linux base...

Offtopic: Speaking about Linux. Last time I tried to jump on Anti-Win10 bandwagon targeting Linux Mint I couldn't stay long on it due to absent essential features which are in Windows 7. These are cascade window appearance (every new same type window opens slightly lower), setting Zoom increments (50%, 100%... per jump) and low and broken volume leveling where even if you set above 100% level through advanced settings it will be reset to 100% max as soon as you lower volume by mouse wheel. So if anyone already uses Mint you can find those Idea suggestions on community linux mint.

Latest Intel, AMD chips will only run Windows 10 ... and Linux, BSD, OS X, already posted but another coverage.
Latest driver for all 8/9/100 series chipsets from Haswell, Broadwell to Skylake for Win7, Now that Kaby and Zen are on the horizon can we expect the same from Intel to release the xHCI drivers ? A simple back lash is all we need...
Win8.x has this built in, But why the actualfck Win8.1 is not capable for Kabylake since It has all the required drivers for all new HW & full UEFI boot (Skylake happily supports this OS), Damn it ! Intel It's them ! they want to lock the chipsets off that options for the older oses..
OT - I can remember I had to install the xHCI driver with my Haswell chipset, do the Clevo laptops from ZM to DM of 7 and 8 series needed to install the same driver for Win7 usb3.0 support ?
Yeah only a few machines can have this capability (Clevo with Prema mod) Checked the MSIGT83VR BIOS options It had this CSM and some option to xHCI, No idea whether we can do it or not in that machine.
Seriously Fck this M$, they could simply push a service pack with all the required components like the Win8 to 8.1, 7 to 7.1 and get over with the privacy datacollection bullcrap with super ugly UI and desperation of killing CP in favor or gimped control smartphone settings system on WinX, Oh that ultra desperate cumulative continuous update, we cannot have a stable OS FFS and meanwhile users at steam report 47% of Win10 64bit.

I checked the MSI product pages for the 73 nd 83VR machines I can only see the 10 drivers but Chipset, xHCI, IRST which are from Intel are readily available across 7 /8.1 /10, Nahimic also seems to support the Win7 to 10 a good thing for MSI owners. The most worrisome part is if Intel quits then we are SOL from Kabylake, Since the control center & some product drivers like card readers, misc firmwares mostly work also the Intel/RealTek Ethernet & wireless but the Killer with INF's are just fine over the actual bloatware drivers but need the base to work properly.
I'm waiting for October to see how things progress with the Win8.1 / 7 cumulative fest for Slipstreaming / update packages user choice chances. Anyways M$ is hell bent we can try many ways but ultimately we cannot escape the clutches of them, Only chance we have is Vulkan / SteamOS or Accept it but careful and Hail MDL

The non vr counterparts should have 7 centric drivers since its just gpu refresh. Its oddest thing...like MSI germany had ge62 w7 drivers posted 2 months before msi usa even bothered... If its just no security updates then its fine honestly i feel like kabys just going to be same issue skylake had with native usb2 being removed and easy to work around especially on laptops. And after that hopefully w10 has matured enough... If you dont care for NVMe 10 wont matter (though can't you slipstream that into 7?)
MSI stuff also some say w10 only but work perfect in 7.
