Yup. I find max brightness almost painfull. Sucks because the only way I can avoid PWM flickering is to burn my retinas at 100% brightness
On a related point, is there any better drivers to use for the monitor other than "generic PnP". Tried searching for some specific to mine (LG something or other), but no joy

How to enable or disable Game DVR on Windows 10
http://www.thewindowsclub.com/enable-disable-game-dvr-windows-10
" The Game DVR feature on Windows 10 is enabled by default so that you can easily share the captured screen on popular social media network or store them locally to a PC. So, once you disable the feature, all the shortcuts will fail to respond. But if you do not have any need for it or if you face any performance issues while playing games, you might want to disable it and see if it helps.''

Here's Why Intel Kaby Lake And AMD Zen Will Only Be Optimized On Windows 10
http://hothardware.com/news/microsoft-to-optimize-windows-10-for-kaby-lake-and-zen
"Not supporting Windows 7, which remains the second most popular desktop OS with enthusiasts, or the much-maligned Windows 8, means consumers will technically have fewer options and less choice when these processors actually hit the market. But that’s not necessarily the case."
...
"Also note, that tying Kaby Lake and Zen to Windows 10 doesn’t preclude users from installing other operating systems, obviously. Older versions of Windows and alternative operating systems will still install and run on Kaby Lake and Zen – they are X86 processors, after all. Older versions of Windows won’t be optimized for the platforms and won’t receive future updates, however. It's no different than running Windows XP on a Skylake-based CPU today." -
Robbo99999 Notebook Prophet
When viewed from the point of view of that article then Windows 10 & Microsoft don't seem quite so evil as some might suggest, seems pretty understandable - older operating systems won't get Skylake / Kaby Lake / AMD Zen optimisations, but they will function.hmscott likes this. -
Well, Microsoft used their "scary voice" when - in a threateningly discouraging manor - Microsoft said "NO SOUP FOR YOU!!"
Ok, so they really said "no support for you" Windows 7/8.1 owners.

Robbo99999 Notebook Prophet
It depends what optimisations are lost when using these new CPUs in Windows 7 & 8, if they're not significant optimisations, then there isn't much of a loss if you're a Windows 7 or 8 user. I can see why Microsoft would want to reserve some features for Windows 10 exclusively - it is their newest operating system & they do want it to be promoted.hmscott likes this. -
Nope, they are not paying customers. In eyes of Microsoft they are "customers who payed in the far past" or "underpaying customers at max". Who knows how they use our info in the future.hmscott likes this.

Optimizations could be interpreted such as when the Core 2 Quads received optimization such as in non-NUMA threads with windows 8. We got the Bull Dozer patch that gave us 50% of the non optimized single thread boost but not all of it. Total boost on that one was 10% only for non optimized single threads.
Essentially there needs to be an evolution in core tech that causes a need for a major change. With quad core we are all good as it is for now. Going to more cores might mean thread scheduling etc. may need to see another change.Ashtrix, toughasnails and Papusan like this. -
That's not what the Windows release life-cycle report said when I bought Windows 7 / 8.1, I bought long term support for an OS that is supposed to be supported on new hardware all the way through it's life-cycle.
MS has been "threatening" to change the nature of that hardware support, but has backtracked some months and weeks after publishing those "scare tactics", and in the end is holding to the original product life-cycle commitment.
MS can't not support Windows 7/8.1 on new hardware. They may drag their feet, and release things begrudgingly some time after first release of new hardware, but they damn well better fulfill the original support promised when the product was sold, not change the terms after they have our money.Raiderman, toughasnails, Kittys and 1 other person like this. -

Why You Shouldn’t Use “Anti-Spying” Tools for Windows 10
I don't use Win 10 and don't have much knowledge of these tools, but IIRC ShutUp10 is pretty straightforward with all its settings as on/off toggles. I'd probably be more inclined to use something like that versus running a script that doesn't have any clear way of reversing changes without digging more deeply into things (or being unable to if certain system files are outright deleted vs. processes being disabled). -
This is horse ****. Many advanced users don't use the Microsoft store, MS apps, and have a third party antivirus that performs better than defender.
It is correct that ms won't install certain updates if a component is missing. Also, if you still have server healing installed, it will reinstall some components. It is correct MS ignores you saying no telemetry on the lesser versions.
Meanwhile, know what you use, what you need, and where you want to go from there. The new builds are to make sure people aren't circumventing crap. If a component isn't there, the update fails. It is too invasive...

"If you have a major philosophical problem with the fact that Windows 10 doesn’t let you avoid non-security updates or disable telemetry, don’t try to fix it. Instead, just switch to another operating system, like Linux or Windows 7 (or Windows 10 Enterprise, if your organization is eligible)."

With Windows 10 they have effectively destroyed Windows as it was, and admittedly so. It is now a service and in my opinion a bad one at that. if it were not the compatibility factor and it had to compete outright with other OS's it would be an entire different story.

I was a Windows/Microsoft fan for years. They have lost me over the last 2 years or so. I don't like the direction they are going, I don't agree with the decisions they are making and don't appreciate how we, the consumers are being treated. Nadella has destroyed them. MS will be completely out of the consumer space within 5 years. They will be enterprise and cloud only. I'm pretty sure Xbox will be spun off as well. This is what Nadella does, this is what he came to do. Increase stock value, make board members happy, all at the expense of the consumers that supported them for years. Good will is gone.
Mismanagement, bad decision after bad decision, screwing customers and shoving crap down their throats and Andromeda right around the corner. I am not a google fan, I loathe them as much as I loathe Apple, but Andromeda is going to change the personal computing landscape in a big way. MS will not be able to compete. The downfall of MS is going to make a fascinating read 10 years from now.inm8#2, Papusan, hmscott and 1 other person like this. -
Andromeda has a long way to go before a thought of replacing Windows. Android on steroids for a PC is not going to cut it. Now if Google were to take Linux and make a closed source "Unix" based OS with KDE like GUI(s) there is a good likelihood some larger houses might look to port their software over.

Windows, Android, IOS, are all pretty much the same now. That is, that they are all advertising platforms now, and the only thing that separates them is their name. I for one, have never, nor will I ever pay attention to ad banners, and I believe most people are the same. The next gen (head downers)(angry birds) are partially to blame, as they do nothing but stare at a phone all day, and collect coins for the games they are playing, which for some reason they find appealing. What I dont understand is, why not release a "power user" version of these OS's? Make it a paid copy, that allows the power user to fully customize to his/her wants and needs? I would consider purchasing a "power user" version of Windows 10 that gave me ":full" control over it, or at least as much control as Windows 7. The reason that will never happen, is because MS views all of us as sheep, and we will just follow the person if front of us.

Forget a W10 power user version. Linux however you can get as much power as you want.

The sad thing about all of this is that Windows has really been a great OS for most of its lifetime. Then Microsoft became envious when they saw Apple and Google making money on appstores. Instead of designing their OS to best serve their users, now their philosophy has changed to usher as many people onto their appstore at the expense of that OS.
Using Windows 10 seems like being an unpaid alpha tester. I can forgive some aspects of an OS rolling out new features, but reading about people constantly having their work interrupted and getting stuck in endless reboot/update failed cycles is really disheartening. I wonder how much time and money MS has cost their users?

Haha I suppose that's also true, but the night is darkest just before the dawn.
I'm rooting like hell for Vulkan over DX12. It seems Microsoft is trying to turn computers into XBoxes (win 10 box = win X Box...
). They're desperate to unify the console and pc gaming platforms, if only to have something they control, and it's important the consumers and software developers keep them from achieving that goal.
edit - Quantum Break PC is better on DirectX 11 (Eurogamer)
As for OS itself, what MS doesn't realize is that you can't strip your OS and shove it into a mobile platform, hoping users just accept this. On the other hand Google is coming from the other direction - they're expanding their mobile OS to make it more capable for desktops. Most home users just need some web browsing and document editing - if they have a choice between a more expensive Win 10 laptop and a cheaper one with Andromeda I can see them going for the latter, especially if it means unifying their Android phone and new PC.Last edited: Oct 1, 2016 -

Andromeda will be more like Chrome on steroids than Android on steroids. For the general consumer, which 80+% currently use Android phones and Google services, that's all it will take to change the landscape. Whether it is as capable as Windows always was will not matter.

Microsoft itself is at a loss, they don't know what they want. The company is a sinking boat. Windows 10/mobile is a HUGE failure, bugs everywhere. They even outsourced their Lumia customer care to a German company (B2X). With more cost cutting the executives get a bonus, e.g. Nutella..... I meant Nadella.
I don't know how many of you are on the Windows mobile scene, I've been a Lumia user since 2011 (Lumia 920, 1020, now 1520), never bought an Android or IOS mobile. But the company keeps focusing most of it's products and development towards Android & IOS. If Microsoft doesn't trust it's own OS and isn't committed to it why in hell should we?? Unless they created WP as a side hobby in their free time which seems very likely IMO.

I remember those old Dopod days of mine with WinMobile6.5 honestly it was far much more advanced than this crippled pos / trash Win UWP. HTC HD2 still boots Nougat ffs almost a decade old lol. The .cab files making the device truly PDA / Pocket computers, Apart from this the Nokia Communicator also did amazingly well. But when the first WindowsPhone debuted, the Chevron Unlock tool was made to hack into the OS and make it like iOS type jailbreak scenario since Android is OSS we cannot compare to that levels of customization/hacking/tweaking.
I'm an Android user since 2.2 - 7.0, If only Windows Mobile was open like that of Windows XP / 7. They would have been triumphed both the Desktop market & Mobile market of the alternate future where WinX a true successor of the 7 being fast, transparent & WinPhone sharing the full advantages of a true Pocket Computer with all this processing power. But nope they shutdown the Chevron project and made some huge mandatory fee for development and everyone was new to the mobile market while Symbian / Blackberry were being dethroned by iOS / Androids. From there Steve Ballmer stepped down after 8.1 and 10 happened with this noobella with Massive N$A levels of surveillance crapshoot built into. BOOM !! Micro$lop got Rekt, trying to be like Apple is not at all necessary, damn it FFS be like old Microsoft, Profit. End of story.
All these crippling happen due to the stupid BOD who only care about margins, Even the damn Pixel / 7.1 (Ugly circular icons eww..) looks like a Social Experiment, Consumers being the dumb iSheep & will be clipped to last until they all line their pockets with midas greed.
But all is not lost, those who actually think also exist & have made the MDL/NBR possible to make optimistic/smartest route even in the times of difficulty, I'm happy till these types of communities exist. Since M$ is not changing even after losses they might even tighten the rules further chasing the consumer to a corner to accept the only path they give not to give the choice.Raiderman, toughasnails and Papusan like this. -

I have been a Windows Phone user for 4 years and my current phone is the 1520 as well. I have a 640 that I run preview releases on and I also have a Blackberry Passport that I love but rarely use.
Yes MS is lost now. They bought the hype of the post PC era coming and ruined Windows on computers. They sabotaged themselves by ruining the momentum they had with Windows Phone when the 1020 and then 1520 were released. They have screwed consumers in countless ways over the last 2 years. They had adopted the evil policies of their competitors. The list goes on and on.
This is who they are now and this is who Nadella is. He has zero interest in the consumer space and the end result will be an enterprise only company in another 5 years or so. They are counting on AI as their next big thing but can't even figure out how to release a stable forced update to the OS they basically forced on people.
As I have said, the fall of MS will make a great read 10-20 years from now. Partly due to incompetence which lead them to choose Nadella. Partly due to the result of that incompetence which has forced them into a corner. And partly due to Nadella himself and his vision for the company which is contradictory to the consumer focused company they once were. And all of it is deserved. -
I wonder how much of Microsoft's current direction is Nadella's vision and how much of it is a broader vision from the Board of Directors, possibly developed before he became CEO. Nadella has been with MS since 1992 so it doesn't seem he was promoted to CEO just to follow orders (like when a company hires an outside CEO to provide leadership but not necessarily make the big decisions). It does make me curious, though - is Nadella dictating the ship's course or just following the path on the map?
It's just really disappointing to see what's happened in the last 1-2 years. Windows Update has had many problems on 7 and unless a person checks forums or follows tech news/blogs, fixing the slow searching, high CPU/RAM usage, or inability to update at all can be a pain in the ass. GWX was a mess and caused MS to lose trust with many Windows users. Win 10 forced, cumulative updating has been hit or miss and caused problems. Win 7 and 8.1 are about to feel the same pain with the new update model.
It's a big mess and MS has themselves to blame. Win 10 growth stagnation was expected with the end of free upgrades, but I fear the next phase of Microsoft's mission to expand their number of active Win 10 devices. On a related note, Nadella's compensation package for the last fiscal year dropped by 3%. At the same time the performance targets indicate Win 10 is not the big focus as we know (cloud/enterprise).

Yeah, MS actually needed to stick with that Windows mobile, and push that forward, they had a huge market share with that OS and completely tossed it aside for - nothing.
I think MS needed to dump Windows Mobile not because of the threat of IOS, I think MS needed to drop Windows Mobile because it was far more functional than IOS was at it's release, and would have killed IOS before it started.
It's so sad, I had to make that jump off Windows mobile too, had several great phones, great keyboards, very functional to do work with.
iphone - blah, nothing useful.
Android, yeah, not real Linux??, blah...
Stayed with Windows Mobile as long as I could...
MS totally botched the transition between Windows Mobile's successful incarnation, delayed waaaaay too long, and launched into the void of lost market share with that garbage Windows 10 Mobile crap.
Well ok, what am I gonna use if not Android?, let's please finish the port of Linux to make it fully useful, ok? -
I'm going to have to disagree with the above post. Win 10 (full fledge OS) is the best thing that ever happened to mobile. Toss Win Mobile aside b/c I can run everything on my 8" Windows 10 tablet as I can on my desktop or laptop. However the only good Windows 10 is one that is permanently offline, which is why I'm loving my (very cheap) Android + Win 10 dual boot tablet. With Wi-Fi completely disabled in Windows 10, MS will never obtain telemetry nor will the tablet ever get a chance to download a forced update. Android is there for when I need the internet, and I can simply use a micro SD card as a data bridge between the two OSes. The only way to defeat the spyware called Win10 is to use it offline in conjunction with another OS...

I recently re-purchased an HTC HD2, and have been playing with Windows Mobile again. This phone was so advanced at release, it unbelievable. 4g(Hspa+), Wifi N, 1ghz cpu, 5 megapixel camera, and TBH, browsing the web on 4g is not as slow as one would think. If it was open source, I would be searching for a way to port it to a more modern handset. File management, is great, email, and sms still work great. The only drawback is there has been no development for newer apps, such as ebay, youtube, twitter, etc. So many of those no longer function. Sitting right next to my Note 4, I find myself using the HD2 to make calls and such. Funny
