That's the sad reality for all our connectedness we forget there is such a word "Offline" "Off the Grid"...I rather have my complete O/S with my laptop on the go and use whenever/wherever not having to be tied down to where is the next wifi so I can connect to use my O/S. That is about stone age thinking as stone age. Laptop was made to be portable not your movement restricted to where they want you to be to just be able to use your laptop. And I can choose when I want to connect to wifi or not and just work on my computer and their docs using my Office 2013 right on my laptop and not have to wait to connect to Office 365 to just use it or Google Docs when I can access and save on the go without worrying whom else online has access to my documents when I am disconnected from them. Remember this day and age your docs and online presence is their selling point...and tracking...but then again...this is me...

I heard phrase @Windows as a Service@ from at least 2 speakers, including CEO herself. But if it will be Free forever then I totally like it. -
1. Image current install, upgrade to 10 for free, image that. Restore previous image and wait for bugs to be worked out and drivers to show up. Restore 10, update, patch, etc.
2. ???
3. Profit? -
I just hope, for the free offer, that I can clean install Windows 10 instead of having to do an in-place upgrade from 7/8.1.
-
As Octiceps pointed out, I wonder where that leaves us with a fresh install, which I tend to do every so often. Especially after replacing a hard drive or other 'upgrades'
Personally I always do a fresh install rather then taking the upgrade path.
Also curious where this leaves business users, or is the home edition free, and the professional a charge?Last edited: Jan 22, 2015 -

Frankly, I don't give much purchase to these ideas floating around on the superiority of "fresh" installs, certainly not for a working Windows system. At least I don't see any "rot" in any of my systems over time. But of course, upgrading such a system to a new version of the OS is a different matter entirely, and I remember one case where I tried to "upgrade" a Windows 7 system to Windows 8 that failed completely. So the idea of upgrading my main machine to Windows 10 may be nothing but a nice dream. -

Upgrade, get Win10 Key by ProduKey, revert back.

The generic Windows 8.1 installation key is not for activation. It is merely used for the clean install setup of Windows 8.1 if you already own Windows 8.
Once installed you need to clear the key and activate with a legit PK. -
Couple russian techsites wrote that MS confirmed no annual fee for Win10 and 1 year as a period of promo action Get Win10 for Free while you can.
No proof link were given though. -
it is stupid pay for OS ...
but to be honest there is no any difference btw update and full DVD or whole windows..
you can do update in future and then u just restore /erase laptop in settings , general , ''remove everything and reinstall win.. and ull have nice fresh win 10 ..Last edited: Jan 22, 2015 -
There wont be any keys anymore.. bcos I heard that they gonna do it differently ..
I don't even remember when I used key last time..
Nowadays all info is in BIOS.. you can download any particular windows copy from everywhere (8,8.1,10) anywhere and install it and if your laptop comes with 8 or 8.1 microsoft will check it after you connect first time to internet and will activate win 8 or 8.1
Depends which win version your laptop came with..
Mine Aspire V7 comes with win 8 (not pro) so it will install only win 8 and do update for free win 8.1 or 10 but NOT pro ..
BUT mine Iconia tablet comes with Win 8 pro so it will allow me to update to 8.1 pro or 10 pro..
And I have JUST one copy of windows 8 and 8.1 in one USB 3.0 flash drive (UEFI) and that installer auto detects which version will install by checking BIOS ... it is actually clever.. no any keys anymore.. -
And so far, how they will handle PK's or activation is all speculation. -

Mate I must disagree..
I purchased laptop and I NEVER seen my product key.. It isnt even under laptops anymore didn't you realize?
In past sticker with key was under ..times changed man
unless
I force it with softwares..
Just simple you dont need any key anymore..
When u go to store and buy windows that is different story.. we NOT talking about retail right now!
And I STRONGLY disagree u gonna run in store to get windows haha -
I think what Galaxy means:
The average consumer never buy the OS standalone. They buy the system that typically comes with an OS anyways.
If they want a new OS, they just buy a new system.
Also, who runs to a store and get Windows nowadays?
In the age of digital download and "free" shipping. -
Win 10 from what I have read will be released later in 2015 and free for Win 7 and 8 for 1 yr.
Cheers

Am not saying there ISNT key .. there IS but in win 8/8.1 is all automated..
And I SAID that microsoft wants stop use key in future so maybe in Win 10 .. they want to do it differently ..
And I SAID yes if I force obtain key ill get it with software key checker.. but I dont need to do it why i would do it .. i have other MORE serious things to do man..
I NEVER purchased ANY OS in my life bcos am not stupid.. it normally comes with laptop JOB DONE .. no care ..
Do u go and buy OS for smartphone ? NO so .. just leave it.. Simple as that..
And stupid ppl can go and buy windows in stores for stupid money.. it is their problem.. bcos they have no idea they can have it for free ...... -
Huh...no. The extended support doesn't end until January of 2020. And it's not like they've been rolling out service packs for W7 left and right prior to the end of "mainstream" support anyway.

There is a program which can read out the win 8 product key from the bios, than you will be able to use and activate your windows 10.

installed on win tablet and my backup machine
Tablet- too unpolished even compare to win8.1, I like some of the minor improvement but not worth it now. and seem to me all the store app are broke?
back up machine- Actually not bad, but since it is a backup machine, I wouldn't bother to set-up everything again.~ -
No switching btw Intel HD 4400 and GT 750 when launched games.. even when selected in all kinds of possible settings..
I had to revert back .. to Win 8 .. even 8.1 is bad ..Last edited: Jan 25, 2015 -
OK, lets go back to actual theme of this topic and stop speculating about key-less OS which is nonsense to me. Lets talk about January Tech Preview Build.
I update it from 987X buid and have to say... THAT IT SUCKS!
No. IT SUCKS! I MEAN IT!
Some of you told me that being mad on a peace of software which is not even beta is stupid... Well now I believe Beta stage is out and it sucks twice more!
There is no Search panel in Start Panel (aka Start Screen)! I can disable Search icon/Search bar in Taskbar but I still don't have it in the Start Sreen! They gave us Start Menu back... AND THEN JUST TOOK IT AWAY... AGAIN! Now it is same METRO screen just minimized. 100% METRO from Windows 8!
I mean it. You wanted a good old Start Menu but now you have BOLD SQUARE half size of your screen! Really, I have FHD Monitor and it takes 1/3 of it! Imagine 900p monitors and less.
You thought you could click on All Programs in StartMenu and see your programs? Now if you clock there you will see your APPS GROUPED BY Alphabet order! Not joking! Grouped meaning there is a letter above all apps which start on this letter!
Windows 10 is doomed.
I obviously will get free key on in just in case but I predict that it is DOOMED.
P.S. I will add video soon. -
Really? I saw youtube video of W10 start menu. There seems to be some kind of folder hiearchy when "all apps" is clicked. Looked to me just like W7 start menu with Metro tacked on the side...
The problem with W10 isn't the start menu, but what Metro is really good for. Maybe to get a live update on your inbox, but any other useful purpose beside that?
EDIT: Just saw a Youtube vid of Jan 2015 insider build. I thought Win 8.1 was bad, this new fangled start menu looked like it sucked even more... Really, alphabetical order. Now I get why MS is so keen on offering W10 free to 7/8 users...Last edited: Jan 24, 2015 -
P.S. I tried to delete half of every bad word in audio channel but still don't suggest kids to watch it.

-
Is your voice in it? Will you be speaking with a Russian accent?

1:36 here over an hour since you posted 35 minutes to upload but still not available?

EDIT : guys if u want great free programs for windows 8 /8.1 (maybe win 10 prev. too)
Try this page : https://ninite.com/
You will find there ''classic start menu'' (under utilities) for win 8 / 8.1 and guys who has win 10 installed on, try install that classic start menu too wanna see what happens -
Well...
I've unistalled Windows 10 for 3rd time. I know it's a tech preview but it wouldn't work with my printer, the Intel drivers stopped working and it wouldn't detect the integrated card. Not to mention it didn't like working with my external Dell monitor nor would any games work on Steam.
And if that wasn't bad enough....don't get me started about that taskbar! What a mess. -
P.S. I tried to delete half of every bad word in audio channel but still don't suggest kids to watch it.
Windows 10 JTP crashes my browser anytime I press Ctrl+F because of browser extention Findbar tweak. MS, REALLY?Last edited: Jan 25, 2015octiceps likes this. -
Hmm, interesting. Can anyone confirm that Microsoft has once again managed to eff up the Start Menu even more?
- Transparency: The Brief had some screen shots that had transparency in both the Start Menu and the Task Bar. Is this really gone now?
- Customizable folder structure in the Start Menu: Is the inane alphabetic order that James shows in his video really all there is?
- Resizing: There were demonstrations on how the Start Menu used to be resizeable quite flexibly, potentially even getting rid of those tiles altogether. Is this not possible anymore? -
Among others, transparency is one of the features they showed on the briefing not yet implemented in Windows 10.
It is said to be coming in future builds. As well as more additions to the start menu - it won´t stay in its current state for long: January build now available to the Windows Insider Program

Alright, thanks. Let's see what they come up with in the final previews/RCs.
-
Because they already gave us resizing and transparent taskbar and why would they take it away?
Among others here is funny bug about Windows defender. I unchecked the checkbox "Use Windows Defender". Now when I tried to launch it and enable again... it simply gives me notification that I disabled it and need to get a thirdparty Antivirus! What, we now can use it until disable it once and won't be able to turn it on? RLY?Trevayne10 likes this.
