Yes it can! With firmware, drivers, MEI FW etc being served through Win update the chances of damaging PC esp. old devices with mismatched HWID can destroy the PC forcing to buy new PC made for Win 11+.
WU still downloads/shows invalid BIOS for my BGA.

Yes, you are absolutely correct. It certainly can. It has damaged 2 NVMe and outright killed 1 NVMe SSD on my systems. That happened on two systems (2 NVMe on one system and 1 NVMe on another system) when Windows Update moved the crash test dummy OS from 1903 to 20H2. It also happened to @Prema on one of his systems. I was able to repair the two Samsung NVMe SSDs using Linux to reset the hidden partition with the controller firmware. The one that was permanently killed with the 20H2 "upgrade" was an Eluktronics-branded Intel NVMe. The fix using Linux did not work on it.

So, the most correct statement isn't that any OS can damage your hardware, Windows can actually damage your PC. I've locked up many a computer messing around with Arch, which never resulted in not being able to use the PC again, and was entirely my own doing.

2025...I wonder if M$ is going to really deprecate Win10 or continue to support its last, best OS? To be clear, best as in, the best M$ has been able to muster in its closed source, bug-laden echo chamber, not the best OS.

I will be interested to hear what others think. My machine that is on the Insiders track is a i7-6700HQ laptop (below), so it is presently ineligible for Win 11, even if I enable TPM 2.0. My wife's laptop is an i7-9750H, and would be eligible - however, she has a very severe Windows "upgrade" allergy. My AMD 3900x desktop would be eligible - however, I depend on its horsepower for picture and video processing - so, I am not in a hurry to move it to Win 11. Linux currently doesn't run many of the programs I need. If I needed to upgrade my laptop now, would look again at Apple, though I hate the lack of upgradeability as well as the much higher cost per performance. I guess I will be with Win 10 for the forseeable future.

    A new Microsoft Surface Pro X is coming with Windows 11 windowslatest.com - September 20, 2021

Microsoft is apparently working on a new Surface Pro X with an upgraded internal chipset and Windows 11 on ARM. The Surface Pro (2021) has been the subject of the latest leak on certification websites,...

This leak comes courtesy of Energy Star certifications, which show that Microsoft is testing a new Surface Pro X with Windows 11 and it will run the Snapdragon SQ processor. It should be noted, however, that the Surface Pro X is listed on the Energy Star website with Snapdragon SQ2.

Windows 11 compatibility: PC Health Check returns for everyone windowslatest.com - September 21, 2021

Microsoft spent the last three months testing the "PC Health Check" for Windows 10, a free tool that allows anyone to determine why their PC doesn't meet the minimum hardware requirements of Windows 11. Following extensive testing, Microsoft’s compatibility checker app is finally out of beta and now available to anyone who wants to try it out.

Yep right in time before the different OEMs start push out their new tacky and nasty jokebooks. The new Health Check tool from Redmond will help a lot to boost the sales.

The new tool tells me my computer is capable of secure booting, but doesn't mention that secure boot is currently not enabled. I guess that means that Microsoft is confident that Windows setup will automatically (and successfully) enable secure booting on my system.

I have a feeling this is going to bite those of us who run multiple OSs in multi-boot configuration. If Windows setup enables secure boot, then the other OSs won't boot, which might come as a nasty surprise. Might be a good idea for multi-boot users to switch to secure boot mode now, before running Windows setup, so you can figure out what needs to be done, e.g. enroll security/platform keys from each installed OS/hard drive.

Yeah, I mean you can still install and run it, you just won't get security updates and will have to manually update drivers (which I always do anyway). And there's rumors they may even semi-support 7th gens after signing a waiver, so who knows. It's a shifting set of requirements that may eventually just shift your way.

Not so sure this is how it works. Remember Microsoft added only 3 laptop models with i7-7820Hq (inluded their own Surface Junk). And there is not much difference in the Kaby lake line-up regarding spec's.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yep, Microsoft really want that you swap/scrap out your +3-4 years old fully working high performance laptop/pc's with their new laptablets. Higher performance from your older HW ain't so important. You need a pen and touch!

That just plain disgusting... It proves that its more than just security and/or Microsoft are lying about it like usual.

Win 11 wont even reach Win7's current marketshare if this keeps up until about 2 years.

Yep, there is no reason Microsoft had to deny Win 11 upgrade for etc Intel 6th and 7th gen + Ryzen first Zen-based CPUs. Not even for older HW that was allowed on the so calle free upgrade as Win 10. See also my note at the bottom about Apple.

And it was no coincidence that Microsoft's pushed out Windows 11 compatibility app PC Health Check for everyone now right before the launch of new products. They want you all to swap out your fully working pc's.

Yep, darn disgusting! Windows client and hardware chief Panos Panay say run and pre-order today

Microsoft Surface 2021 event: Pro 8, Duo 2, Laptop Studio, and more

Save nearly $500 on Surface Duo 2 by trading in your original windowscentral.com

You can cut the price of the Surface Duo 2 by almost $500 by trading in your original Surface Duo.
Microsoft gives people a bit extra if they're trading in the original Surface Duo for the Surface Duo 2. If you trade in the original Surface Duo for any other device the maximum value you can get is $425.

As a footnote... Apple goes the opposite way and will allow even older Apple computers from 2013 run on their next OS.

Microsoft failed hard with their all too rigid OS requirements for a OS that is in short a Win 10 but with new lipstick.

They can't even release a OS meant for normal dektops/laptops.

Windows 11’s Taskbar Won’t Be Finished Before Release

This Taskbar Wasn’t Meant for Most Windows Desktops
Overall, the taskbar looks pretty good. But there’s a serious problem with it: It wasn’t originally designed for typical Windows desktops and laptops. This taskbar was originally part of Windows 10X, an operating system designed for dual-screen devices—one that Microsoft never released.

Windows is supposed to be a powerful, flexible operating system. It’s a shame that, at a time when Apple is making drag-and-drop more powerful on iPhones, Microsoft is making it less usable on Windows.

While I agree with you conceptually, I think you underestimate the ignorance of the average PC owner. MS already has the market share in Win10 so them pushing Win11, regardless of their silly requirements, is all they need to do for Win11 to gain widespread adoption. If anything was to impact their marketshare it would be the chip shortage which means fewer available Win11 PCs ready for immediate purchase. When you think of it, the new requirements may actually be a smart move on MS part. The demand for new tech is there; people are hungry for a diversion from the reality we presently face and there is nothing better than a brand new piece of tech to fill that void. With the new "requirements", customers now have an excuse to buy brand new PCs. Flash some fancy marketing videos showing how "new" and "exciting" Win 11 is and the people will line up.

Fantastic news for those of you that will be screwed by the new Win 11 hardware requirements. I expect Microsoft try to lessen the pain (or at least try to reduce the the affected's anger), LOOL

Windows 10 21H2 brings no changes to hardware requirements winaero.com

Microsoft releases Windows 11 (and Office 2021) on October 5, 2021, for devices that meet minimum hardware requirements. If your computer has an 8th gen Intel CPU or 2nd gen AMD Ryzen CPU with SecureBoot and TPM 2.0, you can expect Windows 11 to arrive on your device via Windows Update. Older computers will have to stick to Windows 10, which is on track to receive a feature update somewhere alongside Windows 11. Microsoft is yet to announce the release date, but the company has already shed some light on hardware requirements.

Remember they said you can stay on Win 10. So yep, they stand behind their words, HaHa

I think I will soon buy a new BGA from MSFT or Thinkpad. Whichever is cheaper and has better support I will get it!
High Perf. DTR or thin w/ vapor chamber is no more and I don't see a point in spending 2-4k$ on BGA which will be phased out either due to shortage of parts for repair or gets EOL'ed quickly!

I agree with you about the average PC user but still even the average PC user dont have a reason to move to Win 11 as they already enjoy Windows 10 on their systems. Even the new requirements wont make older users to buy new PC in order to have Win11 because Win 10 is snappy enough for them and it works great for them except for bugs with every new windows update MS releases every month... Also Windows 11 preinstalled PCs will have supply shortages as like everything else, its already hard enough to a get GPU and certain laptops and tablets because of supply issues.

Never getting another Clevo. Got badly screwed with the keyboard on my P957HR. Keeps dying after 3-4 months of light use. 3 replacements later, I'm now using an external keyboard.

And me... Clevo W860 from 2010 works as day one. Same also for my Clevo P870. No parts replaced. And no need for support. Worse with the Alienware and the Msi gaming laptop. The AW17 needed 2 or was it 3 MB swap? And the Msi. Only hinge problems.

But this is the Windows 11 thread :D Hope the IT adm can see the light and skip Win 11 :p

Your new Surface Device can operate on Windows 10 or Windows 11 windowsreport.com

The ability of users to get the OS version they need is much easier than having IT admins compile driver packs, re-image the devices and then distribute them. It will be a long, cumbersome task hence the decision to run on either.

Ha, ha! They should ship them in a dual boot configuration - Windows 10 or Windows 11. User gets to choose each time they boot.

They don't want that. And, they don't care what consumers want. Nothing matters except what they want. We are not customers, we are consumers and sheeple. And, tackiness is something some people seem to enjoy.

Never touched the Win 11 ISO. AW BGA CPU is getting choked on basic tasks with latest uCode. Had to revert to CC uCode to reduce black screen of death during sleep or display timeouts. I'm fed up of AW BIOS.
I'm waiting for 21H2 mini package update.

Remember kids... newer is always better newer. Always believe the truth what you're told by the technology "experts" that know everything.
So, listen to your friends on Facebook, watch the shill reviews on YouTube and jump on the "upgrade" bandwagon. But, hurry. Do it now.

Wow, that's quite the disparity in latency with the L3 cache between Windows 10 LTSC and Windows 11 Pro.

Windows 10 LTSC looks like it's the best overall for bandwidth and latency.

It fluctuates a tiny bit and LTSC and W7 are extremely close to the same, but the disparity with W11 is real and well outside of the normal margin of error. It is not a one-off bad run. The more recent version of W10 are just as terrible. As a general rule, the newer the OS is, the worse it performs. The absolutely ridiculous amount of totally worthless resource-sucking trash they have added just in the last year or two is inexcusable. The list of services and background apps is longer than my legs.

This is with W11 debloated started from a cold boot, idling on the desktop with no programs launched since reaching the desktop other than winver, Task Manager and snip tool. And, as you might imagine, it's far more heavy on resource overhead prior to debloating.
    RAM-W11.jpg
Compare it to LTSC in the same scenario. Totally ludicrous. Both are packing the stupid bloatware payload ASUS requires for their system support programs to function.

though in your W10 LTSC screenshot you have build 17763.107 instead of the 2nd refresh of LTSC which was build 17763.316, Mr. Fox
    {I might be a little "nitpicking" here about that}

MS quietly released updated W10 LTSC install media in early March 2019 that contained 17763.316

indeed, MS cares more about the big corporations and enterprises than the consumers & home users

Have some of you seen any benefits from Game mode? I'm not a gamer but from what I have seen, its the same disgusting claims that Ultimate power profile was promoted as major benefits if you paid premium for Win 10 Pro workstation. I can't see any performance improvements from Game mode. @Spartan@HIDevolution how much placebo is added into Gamer Mode? 100%?

MediaCreationTool.bat: download Windows 11 ISOs and bypass system compatibility checks ghacks.net Sept 27, 2021

MediaCreationTool, bat is a useful script for Windows to download Windows ISO images from Microsoft servers. The developer has updated the program recently; the latest release introduces support for downloading Windows 11 ISO images and includes a standalone script to toggle the Windows 11 compatibility checks during setup.

I reviewed the MediaCreationTool back in March 2021 when support for Microsoft's Windows 10 version 21H1 system was added by its developer.

The latest version includes support for downloading a Windows 11 ISO image from Microsoft. Microsoft will update its Media Creation Tool when Windows 11 is released, likely on the day of release on October 5, 2021. The tool is useful, as it includes functionality to copy the operating system to a USB drive or create an ISO image which can be burned to a DVD.

Game mode offers no performance benefit.

Balanced is the best power plan. It gives you high performance when you need it and power savings when you need it. There is no performance difference between the high performance and balanced power profiles.
