Good luck with your installation, if I were you, I would take a screenshot of your device manager so you at least know what devices need to be installed and for in any case a unknown device message appears.

I am going to dual boot with Vista, so this shouldn't be a problem.

Don't give up. If the card runs fine in Vista then you should run Driver Magician (trial version is free) which allows you to extract the working driver (even if you never installed one yourself) and then use that in 7. That's what I had to do with my Ti 4200.

I downloaded this today as well but have not installed it as of yet. Just need to check that everything I run currently will work with Win 7 driver-wise. Anybody run some older games such as Call of Duty 2 on Win 7?

I had a really weird experience installing it. Basically I have a secondary 30GB partition set aside strictly for Windows 7 and all the latest builds that have leaked have been mere upgrades to whatever build I had at the time. I decided to do a clean install with the RC but when I clicked on the Windows 7 partition, it basically combined the old Windows 7 build with the RC so my 30GB partition was completely full with essentially 2 builds of Windows 7 (the old one got moved to a folder named Windows.old). I just deleted that folder and a bunch of space freed up but that was weird.

Just start up W7 and choose custom install to another partition.

Hmm I downloaded it last night, now to do a clean install over build 7000. SO far the beat has been working nicely.

Should I clear the partition I am installing it on first, or just install it over the current installation?

I was debating doing that but ended up just doing a partition. I think even if you wanted the only OS to be W7 RC, this may be the best bet (please let me know if this is even possible anyone as I'm thinking of doing this :)

Do W7 on it's own partition, clean install

Then have W7 grab all the necessary drives from your recovery partition, and your Vista partition

Once W7 has all the drivers from the Vista partition, then format the vista partition, and do "expand volume" on your W7 partition. That way you only have W7 as the only active OS. However you still have your factory recovery partition w/ Vista on it if need be.

Would this work people? Seems like an easy way to do a clean install while transitioning drivers quickly

I hope this trend we're seeing here isn't any indication of how the finished product will be, in that the x64 version of 7 doesn't seem to be in the same state of readiness as the x86 version.

On every windows 7-related forum I've come across there seem to be a ton more issues with the 64 bit version right now. :(

It's been running well for about 24 hours!

For me, for the sake of housekeeping, I reformat my hdd and created two partitions - one for XP, and one for Windows 7. I installed XP first, together with all the drivers for my peripherals, and then move on to install Windows 7 RC on the second partition. Turns out that I don't have to repeat the installation of drivers for Windows 7 - is it so smart that it knows where to find the drivers from the XP partition?

So far, after day 1, it's working sweet. Fast. Really fast. No lag issues. But I've yet to stress it with programs, etc.

FYI, I'm also using Vista on another machine. Vista does seem slower (for now).

Windows 7 installation doesn't use drivers from XP partition. It has its own driver repository.

I just installed 7 RC on my computer. I was skeptical that it would run since it's such an old computer but I was pleasantly surprised. 7 installed quickly, like I was amazed how quickly it installed. I thought I was gonna waste at least 1 hour just installing. It found all my drivers, video, audio, including my specific monitor driver.

    Specs of computer:
    - Pentium 4 at 3.00 Ghz
    - 1.5 GB of Ram
    - Nvidia 6600GT with 128 MB of vRAM

And I'm using an old-school IBM keyboard:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model_M_keyboard
    (anyone remember these?)

The system is slightly laggy but it runs without problems.

dat's cool! but are you sure it contains all the drivers of all peripherals in the world? Or they use generic ones for types of peripherals?

For a start, it did not detect my logitech cordless keyboard and mouse... I'll still need to install setpoint for it separately.

    :D

You shouldn't have to download drivers to get 7 going. But you may want to get them (yes .Vista drivers) just in case Win. 7 doesn't update all devices drivers.
Right...those cordless devices might be a little to fancy for generic drivers. :)

After the installation, you need to install recommended OEM drivers yourself. Generic drivers suck in most cases for notebooks.

It's day three and I am totally blown away by 7 RC (32bit).

It's so much more stable and snappy on this old Dell hardware I'm running it on compared to Vista, and in some cases compared to XP too. Considering that three core components (GPU, Creative Sound card and the Network adapter) are using XP drivers which are probably the hornets' nest for instability, this is pretty amazing.

I noticed they must have also improved the power management significantly as Sleep mode used to cause intermittent loss of sound on wake-up but no such thing on 7 so far.

The 32bit version at least is looking extremely promising.

this is my second day so far running W7, been using it exclusively since install, and i couldn't be happier. it's lightening fast, and make me not hate my Celeron M as much lol. if it continues working (flawlessly) for a week or so, i may just extend it and make it my only OS.

Definitely! I asked this in another thread I believe and got favorable responses that this can be done with great success. There is an option during the installation to perform an upgrade. I have yet to do this on my machine, but I will do it once I settle in to my new place.
