metro is awesome. you have to let it be "your thing", totally worth it. windows phone 7 user since day one, can't stand the aero desktop, ios, android and everything else with a ui anymore.

    grüsse nach d-land btw :)

as always, no design is for everyone. but so far, everyone who has used a wp7 phone for a while (or mine) loves the way it works and looks. from geeks to moms (my mom wants to get mine once i get a new one, my dad who does not want to have a cellphone at all would like to use mine, if he had the choice. and both don't like the iphone for example, at all. not because of me, of course... :))

The download is still not available for me from that link booboo12 have provided. davepermen is it sorta fully functional. Can you install and run normal software like Office, Steam and so on? Have you totally removed W7?

Correct, the dev site won't be up until 8 PM Pacific Standard Time.

Dave was referring to Windows Phone 7, you can't install Steam on it for obvious reasons. :)

Oh ok, I didn't quite get him then. I though that he had W8 downloaded (like he mentioned he was doing in post nr. 151) and installed.

So the dev preview coming out tonight will run on all current pc's?
If so, I'm installing it on my HP TM2 tonight.
Anyone knows if the feature where they pull out stuffs on the sides and the top will work too?
I'll find out soon enough though.

It's possible to install and boot this off a flash drive correct? Would 64bit somehow be more stable in beta form vs 32bit, or should I stick with 32bit as that the version of W7 I am running? Thanks.

It really doesn't matter what you use to install it, but it's not a "LiveCD/LiveUSB" thing - this requires installation like Windows always has. Yes, Windows 8 will support (at some point in the development, probably the late beta stages) creating a "Live" CD/DVD or USB stick for truly portable operation, but not the Developer Preview. This is not considered a public beta, to be honest, not like the Windows 7 public beta was.

They're not at the beta stage yet, that's still months away, but I expect to see an actual "Windows 8 Public Beta" by January 1st, if not sooner.

The keynote this morning was bland but that's to be expected. It got interesting with the hardware demos and then the ending section where Sinosky was showing off actually using the OS in the typical situations, especially multiple monitors.

My downloads are a few minutes from completion and I have a blank laptop drive ready to go on my Dell Latitude D630, just takes a few minutes to transfer the installation ISO contents to a USB stick with the Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool that Microsoft provides then I'll get it natively installed and spend the rest of the evening tinkering around.

Wish I had a nice tablet at this point to do real actual touch-based operation, but... right now the focus is on learning what the OS can and does do. Those Samsung tablets they gave away to the BUILD attendees is a wicked evil cool machine, would love to have one but, it just wasn't meant to be.

Kudos to Microsoft, however, for making the Developer Preview Release completely free, no activation junk required, and the tools too. I'm not even a coder but I'll probably grab that ISO as well just to have it and tinker around.

Where Windows 95 sparked a new era in personal computing, Windows 8 looks to be ready to explode and bring the touch-based computing paradigm into the true forefront of today's world.

Good job (so far), Microsoft. ;)

Considering that people are now discovering that the preview is available earlier than expected and there's probably a few hundred thousand people (or more) trying to download it, it's not really a big issue I'd say.

My downloads are ... well, done, actually, just as I started this particular sentence, average speed was about 1MB/s on the 64 bit ISO and 1.7MB/s on the 32 bit, took 14 minutes to get both, now I'm off to do some testing.

Patience, everyone will get it... but as the night goes on the downloads will obviously get slower as more people realize "Hey, it's up, they said later tonight, guess I better grab it now" and that sentiment spreads fast. ;)

    Sucks you can't VM this.

VMware fails to recognize the system files associated with Win 8 installation iso.

Guess no option for VM'ing this.

I was successful at using this on VirtualBox but can't seem to make the screen bigger on it and "Install Guest Additions" doesn't work(which I suspected).

Was about to try this on VMware myself.

Wonder if someone'll figure out how to dual boot this and windows 7.

Got a strange feeling switchable graphics is gonna choke pretty hard unless windows 8 can just use windows 7 drivers without issue (like how vista drivers work in 7 usually)

Wait, one can't install it via a partitioning scheme?

So I just played with it for 30 minutes, I love it. Kind of really wishing I got the X220T instead of the regular X220, but oh well. Battery read almost 6 hours and this is without any Lenovo drivers, on Balanced, and brightness high up. Lots of fun trying stuff out, can definitely see this will be good on touch devices.

Anyone feel the start menu is a bit clunky for a mouse+keyboard? I'm having trouble adjusting. I really like the basic theme for some reason though.

Also is there any way to see or kill running apps short of using the task manager?

well, what can i say.. good morning, and downloading.

all remember, it's a dev preview. none of the apps that we'll see in the beta and or shipping products are yet in this product, with exception of ie9. including a possible taskmanager.

but the metro style apps don't need a taskmanager per se, as they don't run while not in use, anyways. w8 is, technically, nothing new, if you know wp7. it's just the same, but like "what could you do with wp7 if you had huge screens, and much more resources?". which is great :)

18min till the 32bit version is down. the 64bit ones are both about dead for me right now, i'll download them laters..

This includes IE10 Technical Preview. :) It also contains a tablet optimized version of IE10 with the Metro theme.

    Full Windows version, AFAIK.

My ISO is about 3.6GB but I got the 64-bit version. It requires a minimum of 10GB to install... I wouldn't go any lower.

The full developer preview asked for something like 12.5GB. If you have anything larger than that, or if you got the smaller versions, it should be plenty.

    ^It doesn't work in a VM, apparently.

    Sidenote:
Try installing an app that has the same function as another app... like Chrome. A nice little popup will come up asking which you'd like to use as default. Or when opening a zip with WINRAR installed, it will ask you if you'd like to open it with WINRAR or Windows Explorer... AWESOME. I've been asking for this feature for a LONG time.

I love the new OS boot list...very visual and you can change which one is auto started right from that screen.

one version to rule them all. but non-x86 based tablets (intel has shown yesterday at idf that they focus very hard on getting arm-like tablet-performance out of x86), means all the stuff that android runs on right now, won't be able to run old apps, of course.

but windows will be the same everywhere. it's not clear yet if there will be the tons of versions like today, but technically, win7 is the same everywhere, too. it's just a licensing thing.
