I forgot to mention, I use MS Office for work (also a genuine retail key). If my Windows & Office were Enterprise, I can understand my system's behavior -post the hosts/firewall config. Despite my machine being slowed significantly (Office excecutables eventually ran... but again, using tons of RAM). A few more tweaks to my VPN & Firewall settings may be all that I needed. I just can't spend the time troubleshooting (Black Viper, I am not). Please update w/ your Wireshark findings, Ty!
Speaking of changing one's hosts file. I've always liked the Spybot Anti-Beacon, and run it regularly without any problems or hang-ups w/ its additions to my hosts file. *There's an updated version as of 11/11/16 (which may be worth checking out).

“ Beware the Jabberwock, my son!

Jabberwocky
BY LEWIS CARROLL
’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”
He took his vorpal sword in hand;
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree
And stood awhile in thought.
And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!
One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.
“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”
He chortled in his joy.

As the Windows 10 Upgrade has ended, one still needs to run this to stop telemetry in Windows 7 as they are included in the monthly security updates:

Thanks for the guide. Is anyone here actively running the mentioned script to prevent telemetry running Windows 7. I would like to try this but wonder if anyone has experienced any issues with this script to run at login and thanks much.

Good Thing, Barnacules got laid-off by Microsoft. He doesn't need to be part of a company going in a completely different direction for the worst! It's mostly the CEO and his BS propaganda of running the company. If no one agrees with him, he probably threatens to fire any employee who disagrees or refuse to work around that. It's like CEO replacements go in the completely wrong way these days. Company gets a bad rep while there's some employees trying to do some good over there.

Good point!
Off topic for this particular reply/post, but on-topic for this Discussion (I think -feel free to Remove if deemed N/A).
Coming back to this thread for the first time in a while reminded me that I've wanted to post my experience with the "Pending Renames" folder. I assume the Folder doesn't empty like it should b/c of selective KBs installed. (So I figured I'd post here).
As you know the folder is found in C:\Windows\winsxs\Temp\PendingRenames. This godd*mn folder used to pi55 me off b/c whenever I ran a System File Check, afterwards I'd have 40MB or more memory used by Pending Renames (and Pending Deletes -protected, hidden folder, same location). The folder wouldn't clear out after a day, week, month (as it should). I searched all over for the fix, sevenforums, you name it... couldn't find anything that worked. You'll see many suggest reboot your machine, use command prompt, then start a minor service, for e.g., "net start TrustedInstaller" -then supposedly, Windows will work through your files (that fix never worked for me).
If you find you have a ton of Pending Renames that never clear, this will revert the folder to 0MB (at least it works on my win7 machines).
Open Windows Update, choose a KB you've installed, Uninstall it, reboot. Open WU, "check for updates... let me choose", choose the update you just uninstalled, re-install. Done. You may need to wait a bit if you have a HDD and/or low RAM.
If this is common knowledge, my bad. But if you search online, there's a sh*t-ton of people looking for a fix. Again, sorry if off topic... but I think some of you might find it helpful. Peace outRaiderman likes this. -
My pending renames folder is completely empty, but I have WUS disabled and install updates using simplix. If you are still using Win7, I suggest you do the same. Here is the link to it if you are not familiar with it.

I shall check it out. Simplix's page is awesome, but I haven't had to do an install since the post October bundled crap.
Im curious if you've run a System File Check though? If so, does your Pending Renames remain empty? Hmm... Id guess you have run sfc/ scannow, so maybe I need to consider a reinstall of SP1 via Simplix. Ive done all of my machines' installs (and KB updates, up until Oct.) manually/selectively, as originally outlined by Phoenix, pg1. Thanks for the feedback! Although, my sfc scans haven't reported any corruptions afterwards -just the large Pending Renames folder & memory use was my only issue (which isn't a ton of memory, but it still bothered me). Anyway... interesting stuff. Thanks again!Raiderman likes this. -
Then thing that is great about simplix, is you can integrate all the updates into your install.wim so your ISO is fully up to date when you have to reinstall. There are instructions on how to do this on the page link. I have never run system file check or sfc, because my Win7 build is so hacked, it would fubar all of my customization's. I have 200 DLL's that are modified in system32 alone, and somewhere around 100 in syswow.
Windows 10 will be another fail for MS, as was 8.1, so either they will finally get the point and listen to the consumer/user, and give us what we want in an OS, or there will be a mass migration to Linux. At least that is my wanna be Nostradamus.Riley Martin, huntnyc and steberg like this. -
Is Microsoft blocking Win7/8.1 updates on Kaby Lake and Ryzen chips?
KB 4012982 says that Microsoft will prevent updates on the newer hardware...
http://www.infoworld.com/article/31...781-updates-on-kaby-lake-and-ryzen-chips.html
"It's hard to pin down the source of a flame war like the one currently underway in the Windows blog echo chamber. Yes, Microsoft's KB 4012982, published last week, says that Microsoft will actively block Win7 and 8.1 updates on the newer hardware. There's a mighty AMD Reddit thread on the topic. Bloggers are beating their chests about it, although Microsoft first warned about the direction more than a year ago.
What I want to know: Have you seen the warning message?

I've looked high and low and can't find anybody running a Kaby Lake or Ryzen processor (or Qualcomm 8996, for that matter) who's had their Win7 or 8.1 patches blocked.
According to Microsoft, attempting to update Win7 or 8.1 on one of those newer machines should result in errors:
posted a video on YouTube showing that he was able to install and update Win 8.1 on a Kaby Lake processor on Jan. 24.
Has something changed since then?"

Microsoft Drops Windows 7/8.1 Support for AMD Ryzen & Intel Kaby Lake CPU & Lies About It - BUSTED!

@Phoenix: Please add KB4012218 and KB4012219. These updates add the hardware check for Ryzen and Kaby Lake and when deployed they will prevent any future updates from being installed on these configurations paired with Windows 7 and 8.1.

Do we know if uninstalling these KB's if they slip through and get installed will reverse the damage? Or will it take additional massaging to the Registry / ? to fix?
-
If one skips these they will get into the system with cumulative updates again, Whole future packages from WU system restriction applies with this. Only way is DISM (Manual)Raiderman, Riley Martin, inm8#2 and 1 other person like this.
-
Yes, uninstalling the KB fixes the damage, but installing it however changes the Windows Update Client itself to do the hardware check. As such, manual updates are also non-functional if they are dona via installing .msu packages. DISM Tool with .cab files still works. More details at Woody:

Microsoft will kill some Windows 7 and 8.1 support in April
And I bet from April forward Microsoft will begin rolling older updates into the new 7/8.1 cumulative patches ( as they said they would) so that if you update through official MS channels you will not be able to avoid the restrictions on newer hardware.

Weird. I was just asked to Activate my Retail Win7 key/license again. 2nd time in less than a month (a month back I installed a new processor and motherboard & was prompted shortly after to Activate -but yet again today). Well said. I hope they lose more & more market share to Linux. As more old timers get out of the game, MicroShark hopefully find themselves losing their market to Linux users.
With respect to MS sending a 2nd request for my Licese Key (twice w/in a month)... Microsoft has done the unthinkable. The hardware check for CPU Platform has been introduced in the Security Only update, KB4015547 for Windows 8.1 and KB4015546 for Windows 7. Following the links you will see one thing in common in their description:
Effective immediately I will consider their "Lifecycle" Plan as being nothing more than a piece of toilet paper. 2018, 2020 and 2023 have all been totally discarded in their quest to force people use Windows 10. I fully expect them to breach their "mainstream" support plan with Windows 10 also.
Really nice Microsoft. Does nobody in the higher ranks realize that when you throw Windows users under the bus while they are still under mainstream or extended support this can easily mean that ANY future Windows release is prone to this inexcusable behavior? Does nobody realize that this will result in less sales and market share? -

They really are a bunch evil loser digi-Nazis bastards from hell. Screw 'em. All they are doing is giving honest people an incentive to stoop to dishonest measures to run the version of Windows they prefer to run. Their behavior will create a new group of users with an incentive to resort to software piracy that never existed before Micro$haft's latest brain hemorrhage.
What they don't realize is this is basically irrelevant. Their support has been irrelevant for several years now. Their hardware validation cancer does nothing but invalidate their legitimacy as a technology leader. I could say more, but it would not be very nice and would be a violation of forum rules. So, I will just leave it at "Bite me, Micro$loth" and you guys can fill in the rest of the blanks.

Even worse is the argument that Windows 7 is eight years old now, and the shiny NEW Windows 10 "must" be better.Ashtrix, toughasnails, ajc9988 and 3 others like this.

Only the lying retards will make that argument, and the sheeple already believe it. The real trouble is that idiots, ignorant and gullible consumers are in the majority. If that were not so, Windows 10 would only have like a 10% market share, Micro$haft would be scrambling to try to produce their next digital abortion to replace Windows 7, and Intel would have stopped pushing BGA filth for trashbooks because nobody would buy that crap. Again, just one more example of the lowest common denominators adversely affecting the rest of us.

It's Happening, Microsoft Is Blocking Updates On New PC Platforms with Older Versions Of Windows - Hothardware.com
"It didn't take long for another issue to arise, when it was revealed that those restrictions would go into effect with Intel's Kaby Lake and AMD's Ryzen processors. And today, Microsoft has finally dropped the hammer."
"Here's where things become really murky. By refusing to issue patches to Windows 8.1 users on modern hardware, Microsoft is technically going against its official support terms, which has 8.1 mainstream support lasting until next January (2018). Apparently, that promise never counted towards users of unreleased (at the time) hardware."
