KB3081954 - This update adds telemetry data points to Work Folders for Asimov telemetry pipeline in Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1). This update also supports users to continue using Work Folders after they upgrade from Windows 7 SP1 to Windows 10.

It is possible you may loose functionality on the upgrade but my bet is there is a W10 update that re-enables them, or allows you to set them back up. The wording there sounds like a scare tactic from M$ for you to do the update.

I don't think people can win this battle. It will get to the point where M$ will release "security updates" that contain telemetry or W10 upgrade, if they are not doing it by now. There is probably 3 choices.
1. Upgrade
2. Run a vulnerable version of Windows
3. Linuxstringbuzzzzzz and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -
The idea is after July 2016 it will no longer be a free upgrade. That portion of the struggle will be over. There is only so far they can go with telemetry in W8.1 and below as each of those OS's have their own EULA. The issue we need to watch for is them attempting to get us to accept a new EULA.
Every day I am leaning more and more to a Linux based exclusive machine. I just have to rip that band-aid off. I am getting closer but it will still take a bit of time. I really want to limit issues and learning curve.
One issue I found is system restoring. You can easily burn yourself doing updates so I would like to setup a routine disk imaging so I can revert on a dime as they say. I am not comfortable enough with mounting points yet to have user data only exclusively on its own partition but I am getting there. -

The rest of the W7's I have I watch this thread very closely and only install the known good KB'S. If I find that there is a problem with a few I can always go back a month and run my backup image. It's time now... FULL DISCLOSURE... Like the the rest of the planet.
But you do bring up an interesting point, Darleyni.
I say... Amassing a global switch to Linux might just break the spell... For a quick minute.
But maybe it will give us "withdrawing net users some focus on the other realities.,
Long past, valued as relevant.
Could it be possible?

I guess I better just "settle." This direction I'm sharing here... It only leads to clarity....

Until then...

And if Linux is to be "one of three" outcomes as a solution...
I suggest we come up with a forth one.

I've been on the hunt for the unlocked q9200. Hopefully, It'll reappear on the web before I commit to a QX9300.
After taking in a post, shortly after signing up here... A post, miaklas3000 posted, years back on The Dell M4400 Precision Owner's Lounge pt 2 tread, caught my attention... post #591 I included it in a post to make a point,at the time as a reference, reply to chat or something to that effect.
Since then, I've been very interested in following in his footsteps with added mods, and so on, remembering his conclusions over the Q2900.
He seemed very happy about the CPU, favoring "the sweet spot" at 2.8... with a Cooling pad.
Of course...
The CPU for the M4400's an upgrade applied to my machine.. Maybe your familiar with the post.
Nevertheless,
I have a question, TANWare... if I may.
Have you ever heard or know about the q9200's currently out of China..? On Ebay., If you dig a bit through the clutter offers...
My concern is the odd specs., Slightly lower than normal.
For example...
I viewed a few of these q9200's with 2,3Ghz, as apposed to 2.4. and then, there's a 1033FSB, as apposed to a 1066FSB.
Putting two and two together., I'm wondering what's up with this deal. I can only assume it's marginal production run. Yet, perhaps there's a benefit to be had due to the lower specs.
Meaning, production runs on CPUs or all kinds of chips on the market have curtain traits.
If you have a lower spec in one category, you may see an "across the board" reduction like
Voltage.
Of course, They don't verify the voltage.
Without speculating further, I thought I'd run this by you for your take.
Obviously... These CPUs an the on the market to take advantage of possible demand.
The QX93000 for example is around $135 U.S. formerly at $399 a month ago. -
-
stringbuzzzzzz Notebook Consultant
In fact... both CPUs..., the q9200 and the qx9300 are priced around the same. $140ish
I guess I should snag one... or both.
Seeing there's been some positive posts about the CPU on the M4400 Precision Owner's Lounge pt 2. thread. An indication the QX9300 is more acceptable than I thought.
Although, I'm still waiting to see the benchmarks with CPU and M4400, without a cooling pad.
Since the M4400 is new to me...
I've been back and forth on maxing my machine's CPU. The T9400 came with my M4400
which has reasonable performance @ 2.53 Ghz. I recently pick up a T9900 w/3.06Ghz,
thinking It doesn't get much better then that without O.C.. Plus it has is a 35 watt TDP in
dual core performance. Same TDP as the M4400.
You know the progression of a justifiable performance upgrade...
"Got to have it... A high end Quad for back up .., Just in case...."
Taking in consideration the post using the Q9200 mentioned above.
Between these two CPUs... Q9300/Q9200... It's a toss up.
And now that I know your Q9200 came standard in a 2.6 Ghz version... Its seems to come down to under-volting to the lowest possible power setting with stability while overclocking to
a 2.8 Ghz for performance level.
The QX9300 comes unlocked. I don't think the Q9200 does without finding a rare version, now and then. Both have 12MB caches. I would guess QX9300's 2.533 standard is has a higher O.C. potential.
Can you share more about your Q9200 in regards why the 2.6 Ghz exists? and such.
Is it unlocked? And can I find one somewhere?
Like to find out if this Performance model with O.C. assigned to a to a hot key..
That miaklas3000 thread had a big influence as my first impression of the M4400's potential and known attributes. Some reports imply the M4400 has an inferior cooling system. Just many dell laptops do,.as well. The cause for BSOD, left unchecked. I tend to agree..
It does get fairly hot if there's anything less than a" fresh repaste."
A PC tech on YouTube said, while re-pasting a M4400.. "Apply thermal paste every 6 months
to ensure best cooling is the regiment."
Of course, the heat Pipe w/ Fan get the same. Cleaned out.
Using Top Quality thermal paste like ICD 7 seems to have it over on Arctic 5.
In short. I developed a overboard perception about known heat issues heat management w/M4400, in the early days of ownership. And now, I'm think I'm coming down to earth with a milder concern for 45watt CPUs, seeing the bigger picture.
Even with a machine, known to have heat issues, etc.
I just need to use the recommended cooling solutions and maybe beyond, in some extreme examples.Last edited: Oct 26, 2015 -
It is 2.4 stock but running at 2.6 I can do so at the lowest possible vcore stablely.
So long as your system supports quad core it is a worthy upgrade. You have to watch though as these will thermally throttle easily. I use throttle stop to control the CPU.
Edit; getting this back somewhat on topic. These CPU's are non-numa, to properly optimize in Windows 7 you need the AMD bulldozer patch. With Windows 8.0 or greater, 10 included, to get the proper scheduler settings you have to do a fresh install.
What this does is on single threads (non optimized/affinity set ones) is with the patch give you a 5% speed boost but with 8.0 and above there is a 10% increase. It should be noted that with the quads the non-numa CPU's take a penalty hit in those single threads compared to a same clocked C2D. Essentially the scheduler of W8.0 and above eliminates this performance hit.Last edited: Oct 26, 2015stringbuzzzzzz likes this. -

Thanks for the technical, TANWare... I do appreciate your feed back. Noted your 9200 v-core stability remark as the 2.6 Ghz is now understood..
Sound like your well versed on handling these duo core 2 family CPUs. And I haven't O.C.'d in years. So, I have to admit, I'm lacking in this terminology
since 08' when I was into AMD. I presume (non-numa) meaning "non numerical?"
I realize your saying and a later O.S. would be simpler if installed. I owe it to myself to get on board with Intel, now that it's on my desk.
Topic:
Getting or installing a later O.S. would be great. So feels M.S. Just not their preferred O.S.
I can't see buying any OS upgrade due to this threads worthy account of having W10 shoved it us. Which accounts for my overstated rant, in earlier post.
I've considered deleting that post as it's starkly dark and discontent. I'm sure most here already have their views in order, regarding the "winds of change"
as I certainly don't want to offend the contented. This W 10 topic does grow branches from it's trunk.
If it's no trouble, TANWare, I'd be happy to receive your feedback in a PM, and if possible, any info or recommended text/links, whatever regarding
W 7's 32bit Ultimate, utilizing the AMD bulldozer patch you've suggested, if compatible on 32bit. Only if it's no trouble. And thanks again if you can help.
This would help in the delaying any thoughts about submission to win 10.
And lastly....
I do have recent posts on ThrottleStop getting unclewebb's lowdown on my M4400 Ara machine. Turns out, it's buggy with Nvidia's PowerMizer tech legacy.
Making throttling issues even more difficult, on top of your caution about the ACPI technology.
The "Resistance" continues with keeping Win 7 32b., People!
Cheers, TANWare.Last edited: Oct 28, 2015 -

I don't know how popular this already is on this site but I've heard, that the pro's use this utility to upadte windows:
http://www.wsusoffline.net/
It can download all Windows updates and install them on it's own in the right order if given admin rights, if not given, one needs to make the reboots onesself.
There is not much need for that utility in Win10 with it's few updates 'til now, but for Windows7, this utility is glorious, especially if installing on multiple machines or installing again after half of a year or a year. It's not completely trivial to exclude the bad updates, but I think the way to do so can be understood in less than 10 minutes. As I understood it, it simply requires writing the number of the update (i. e. kb050834) in some file, and then WSUS offline will ignore it.
This is definitely faster, than installing all updates manually, even if use the first time, because WSUS downloads all updates with maximum speed and doesn't get any errors during the install. Last time I used it, I think it took about 15 minutes to fully update my Win 7, something I would have needed at least 1-2h before knowing WSUS.stringbuzzzzzz, toughasnails and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -
As I had advised the use of WSUS Offline update, here is the "exlude-list-file" that you simply have to copy into client\exclude (overwrite the existing one) , and then, none of the updates mentioned in the first post will be installed! You can easily download almost all Windows Update with WSUS, then you go AFK or do something else, when it's ready and you want to install Windows 7, you simply directly run WSUS Update after the install, and it installs the whole bunch of 200+ updates completely automatically, if you give it the rights. You can also choose in that setup, if you want any version of IE at all, so you can decide if you at least updatet to version 9, or if you stay with version 6. Ofc., the IE-Blocker-scripts have to be run then, because otherwise, the updates will always show up when you manually try to update.
And one thing: I didn't exclude the update that creates the group policy option to block all win 10 related stuff, so after you have run WSUS, go to gpmsc.exe and block it as the manuals from Microsoft or any other sites explain to you, should you not be comfortable with the GP-editor.
I hope, that I've done everything right with this script, as I included all but the one update in the exclude-file. I even excluded the versions for both, Win 7 and Win 8, so using this exclude-list should work on any system. Maybe you get some error-reports, because I added the updates for both Windows, just don't care about them.
Thx Matrix Leader for all of your work, it's mostly because of you, that I downgrade to Win 7 again now, because it seems as if there is no other way to find out, if it's better than Windows 10 completely tweaked. This thread is great help in that process.
P.S.: WSUS is btw. so good, that it can even create Windows install iso's, with the updates integrated from what I understand. Really, use it, get used to it, you'll love it from the start, of that I'm sure.Attached Files:

Same opinion here, that quote is an insult to the customers of Microsoft OSs. Anyhow, this could massively backfire on them, smoothering the road to more improvement / less ridiculous behaviour of MS. When a Win-user finds his PC being stuck in an upgrade process after wake-up, he'll first write a post somewhere and ask what is happening to his system, then the more experienced users explain things to him, hopefully incl. how difficult it is to disable Windows spying, making the intial user go into rage-mode and write a rant against Microsoft somewhere. Many users, many rants, storm inevitable, room for change. If Microsoft admins had any clue about what they're actually causing with such behaviour, they would never risk something like that, but the same admins must think, that Microsoft is a world-power and that they can rule their customers, which they only currently, temporarily, and not even effectively atm., while resistance is still not widely spread.
I believe the internet will become very funny at the moment, when Microsoft puts Win 10 in the recommended update's list.

The problem, at the moment, is M$ cares nothing of its current client base. That is unless that base converts to W10 and the service and metro based subscription. They have left the model of making money from an OS alone on a PC. We literally are nothing to them other than possible future fodder.
The sad thing is things are going to get worst and may never get better. Until there is someone out there to stop them nothing will. Just look at the attitude as essentially; "you have plenty of time to stop us, if you can"!ajkula66, toughasnails, brainout and 1 other person like this. -

Actually, I think they did model their business after Detroit. And are having the same outcome, some pipsqueak which didn't do a good building job in the beginning for user-friendliness (Linux) is now besting them (for the first time, in June, I finally got my Windows stuff to run in Linux, after 3 years' of trying).
You wait. The new mantra should now be, 'Linux online, Windows offline' for Windows users. We can bypass this whole telemetry nonsense if we just install Linux on an external drive or stick (details here, http://brainout.net/frankforum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=6 hope I'm not repeating too much) -- and then use Windows as usual. No need to update it, which you can't anyway because GWX will keep interfering, per the High Holy Hoopla Himself, Terry Myerson.
All a Windows user need do, is install Firefox (or Chrome) and Thunderbird in Windows. Then, import bookmarks or sync if already using Firefox (or Chrome). Then, set up Thunderbird email client so that the email box is on some external drive. Then, install on another external drive, your fav Linux (Mint, PCLinuxOS, are most like Windows, some prefer Zorin) -- and then find those same icons in the Linux (Firefox or Chrome, and Thunderbird, which are also native to Linux). Use just those two, and that's all the 'Linux' you need to learn right now.
External LINUX installation bypasses all the complexity of learning grub, wubi, vm or whatever, as well as bypassing likely later borking of Windows. And, you take your LINUX computer with you to ANY machine with 1 GB RAM or more. AND, you can even buy those Linux sticks by Prizix at Amazon if you don't want to add software, customize, and store the sessions.
Takes an hour to make one of these. I made five for my 19 Windows machines. So I turned off Windows updates, and never have to play games with Redmond, nor do I have to learn Linux. Until and unless I've time and inclination. Ahhhhh, back to real work again, after a YEAR of being mucked about by Redmond fake promises.stringbuzzzzzz and Seraiel like this. -
