I'm pretty happy to finally be back in the Dell forum :)

I sold my Vostro 1500 with WXGA screen and 8600mGT about a year ago to a buddy of mine, it was one of the biggest regrets I've ever had with selling any of my computers. He called me out of the blue a couple of days ago and said that he didn't want it anymore due to it not being as portable as he wanted, and offered it back to me for $300 :D :D :D

So I am finally back on my original Vostro 1500 that I bought when Dell had them on sale for 800. I think I am however going to upgrade it to either a WUXGA or WSXGA+ and also upgrade the CPU.

DerKaiser: Was the upgrade to the T7700 worth it for the money? Cause I'm running on a 1.8ghz C2D but I'm thinking about upgrading that as well.

It's hard to say. It was a bit of an impulse buy. It definitely feels faster and everything just feels snappier. Plus, messing with my computers is my hobby, so it was fun to tear down the Vostro and build it up again.

I don't get why the Penryn is better, they're all rated at 35W TDP regardless of being 65nm or 45nm processors. And the T8300 has less L2 cache (3 MB vs 4) than the T7700. The T9300 has 6 MB of L2 however.

because of the technology, penryns use 45nm , meroms use 65nm..
    more efficient, I'd say

    I got T7700 idles @ 44C, and T9300 @25-29C .. both without undervolt, same machine, same thermal paste :)

I think it looks pretty cool actually, especially the bezel bit.

The penryns are alot better on heat and power usage not to mention more cache making them slightly faster. Personally I would recommend a bios flash, fresh drivers, faster ram, faster HDD and a t9300 cpu. Those upgrades and a fresh format and drivers would maximize the vostro. All I need is a t9300, faster HDD and newer drivers and Im set. but in all honesty Im 95% sure I wont be upgrading mine past the ram I did in early 2008. Im hoping to get another 1-2 years maybe more out of it before I finally put it on server only tasks.

i regret selling mine but i found the vostro 1700 to be too big. if only i had bought the 1500, it would have been nice. but now is too late to be sad.

Looking at the 1700 and 1500 side by side the size difference is very small.
