Any original vostro owners still around?

    yea, the vostro 17xx's are some of the slimmest and lightest 17" notebooks i've seen. thats why i considered the 1710 as it wasnt much bigger or heavier than the inspiron 8600 (15") that i was upgrading from

    The vostro I have is pretty thick compared to the thinkpad t400, but in all honesty I dont want or need my 17in laptop to be thin and light. Id rather it be thicker and have better cooling and/or space for larger and faster hardware. Just my $.02

    there are a lot of people who buy the vostro just for the big screen, not for powerful components (mid-range c2duo and intel integrated dont need much cooling). speed+power+heavy=M6400/6500

    and i compared it to the 5 year old inspiron 8600, modern 15" notebooks are smaller/lighter, and certainly a 14" would. what i was trying to say was the 17" vostros arnt too much more bulky than the 15" notebooks of yesteryear

    "Original" Vostro 1700 owner here and happy so far. I put original in quotes because it got a few upgrades ever since the base machine back in 04/2008
    • 1GB (2x512MB) RAM -> 4GB (2x2GB) Kingston RAM
    • 120GB 5200RPM Western Digital HDD -> 2 x 320GB 7200RPM Hitachi HDD
    • Vista Home Premium -> WinXP x86 -> Vista Ultimate x64 -> Win7 Pro x64
    • Stock 8600M GT -> Error-free OC'ed 8600M GT
    • 1440x900 Samsung SEC3258 Matte -> 1920x1200 LG TL A1 Glossy (even the reflections have reflections urgh)
    • No expresscard media -> Avermedia Expresscard TV Tuner
    This PC has been my work and play horse and it shows because the only flaws I had with it so far is cosmetic. The paint from the speakers is chipped a bit as is the front media buttons. Don't get me started on the corner scuffs near the notebook edges. I think the only upgradeable part I haven't yet is the T8100 CPU but aside from playstation2 emulators I'm happy with that :p

    If anybody has suggestions how to get rid of the paint chipping or fix the scuffs I'd love to hear it because if I do that and slap Intel's new Core2Duo & Windows 7 case badge, it would really look like a new computer.

    I *Kinda* have a vostro.

    My pink inspiron 1520 has a Vostro motherboard w/ 8600GT. Up until last week, i had a black vostro keyboard (replaced for worn keycaps back to normal).

    Love this laptop :)

    Also have my Vostro 200 desktop running Server 2008 x64, VMWare Server 2 and 6.5gigs of memory.

    My room is a Dell shop! Except for the netbook which is going to be replacedd with a 11z I think!
