I posted something similar in another thread, but im not sure if my inquiry will get answered with that thread title. I know there are users who have been able to get sound out of their E6400s over Displayport, but all the users i have heard from and read about this from have had integrated intel video. Are there any E6400 with nVidia quadro nvs160 users that have successfully gotten digital audio out through the displayport using a displayport --> HDMI cable?

Yes you can! Just do not instal the dell audio driver because it will not give you the option in the sound menu to select digital audio. Just select digital audio as the default device to output audio and connect to your HDMI tv via a DP -> HDMI adaptor. Also check the sound setings inside Digital Audio such as Dolby Digital because if you checked something that your TV does not support you won't get audio. Good Luck.

Here is how i did it on my E-6400.

(The following description may be too verbose and detailed for advanced users but i wanted this to help as wide an audience as possible)

First, connect your laptop to your hdtv via display port.

On my TV (Panasonic plasma vierra) i have connected it to the front HDMI port - labelled HDMI 3. It is next to the usual yellow-white-red RCA jack labelled video 2.

Before i discovered that display port can output audio, i used to have a stereo-to-rca cable connecting the headphone jack on my laptop to the red and white rca jacks on the TV.

So basically, i had video signal coming in via HDMI 3 on the TV and audio signal coming via the red and white RCA inputs labelled video 2.

Now on my TV you can choose which audio input goes with which video input. So in AUDIO ADVANCED section of the setup i had HDMI 3 configured to receive audio signal from Video 2 input.

First thing i did was to change the audio input to DIGITAL. So basically you need to ensure that whatever HDMI input you are using is setup for digital audio.

Next open the VOLUME CONTROL. Select OPTIONS from the menu and check Advanced controls. When you do this, a new button labelled ADVANCED will show up on the volume control window. Clicking this button opens a dialogue box.

In this dialogue box check PC SPK MUTE to mute your laptop speakers and check SPDIF interface to start outputting digital audio over display port. Hit okay to close these windows and Voila - you will have digital audio being output via display port to your TV.

Right.. do that just until Dell release proper Win7 IDT sound card drivers for WIn7, where it supports that. I noticed that they removed the Dell Control Point software form the Windows 7 page. I recall the ones that was removed where the Vista ones, they worked fine, except for the volume indicator.

Has anyone gottone the audio over displayport to work with a displayport monitor?

I cannot for the life of me get the audio in my 3008 to work from the E6400 display port. Dell is useless. They could not even confirm the E6400 could drive the video for the 3008. It does by the way.

It used to work... but for some reason the a few drivers back it got removed. The only way to get it is to uninstall the drivers and use Windows default ones. I don't know if it had some issues, where Dell (or IDT) decided to remove it while they work up a fix, or someone at Dell/IDT screwed up.

I have a Dell Ultrasharp 2709w and I dont think these DisplayPort monitors will accept audio over the DP connection even if it does for HDMI connections. I know mine outputs 5.1 to the analog connectors when my Xbox 360 is hooked up through HDMI, but it wont accept audio over displayport from my E6400 even when s/pdif is my default sound device. I dont think the monitors have the circuitry to handle audio over displayport.

If that is the case, is there another way to get the digital audio out of the E6400?
