I just tried out my new monitor and the audio works fine.

Some things to keep in mind though:
    1. I used the displayport -> hdmi cable sold on monoprice.com
    2. I didn't change any settings. The audio simply worked when I plugged in the cables.
    3. The monitor I'm using is an Acer p235h.

What drivers did you use? The default Win7 driver or the ones dell supplies? I just got the cable today and cant get this to work on either my Sony 42" or my samsung 46". Im using the default Win7 drivers (completely fresh Win7 Ultimate install) and i set the default playback device to s/pdif and neither tv plays sound through the speakers or reports that it is receiving a sound signal.

Sorry but the Latitude E6400 doesn't have HDMI, it has VGA and DisplayPort.
If you mean you used a converter from DisplayPort to HDMI, then your computer monitor might not support audio via HDMI or that the adepter exclude audio, so that they know need to pay the extremely high fees for the usage of HDMI.

I have an E6400, yes with displayport and using the monoprice cable displayport to hdmi that others have used above. But I get no audio when connected to a visio 37 panel. Great 1080p video, even recognises HDCP but no audio. Was trying to determine if this is a windows xp issue or other. Several others in this and other threads have had success but under win7 which is not an option for me at this time.

So I ask again, has anyone gotten the sound over HDMI to work in Windows XP?

    Hi all,

I'm the proud owner of a Dell E6400 and recently bought a Displayport -> Hdmi cable to watch videos on my HDTV.

As others on this forum, I have troubles to get sound throught the cable. I had installed the latest Dell driver and thus tried to uninstal it when I saw the posts of this thread. I run win 7 64.
When I reboot, windows automatically installs the IDT audio driver and I can't manage to get the third item on sound properties ("Digital Audio") as shown on the snapshot attached by andrei oGu on the second post.

If somebody could help me, I would really appreciate it

Where could I find Win 7 64 default sound driver so I can try installing it over dell/idt one? Is it possible for somebody whose digital audio works fine to copy the driver files and send them? I'm not sure if it's possible or not.

Or is there any other solution I did not think about?

I finally managed to get the default windows driver. So now I have the "digital audio" item in sound.
But I still can't have sound trough the cable.
Is it just a question of settings on sound properties or even on the HDTV or could it be my cable that can't carry sound?

You have 3 display port versions.

    - 1.0 Which carries video only. This was an alternative to DVI. As it was smaller, easy to plug-in and out, it was a welcome addition for laptop. Like any new standards these kind of things don't get adapted nicely.
It can drive display panels directly, eliminating the need of any scaling and control circuits and allowing for cheaper and slimmer displays. Supports both RGB and YCbCr encoding formats

    - 1.1. This is what the Dell Latitude E6400/6500 has (and many other models). This one does competition with HDMI. It carries video and digital audio. Display port has 2 advantages over HDMI, cost much less to implement due to the lack of royalty fees. The cables and adapter cost much much less, again, due to lack of any royal fees to pay. It holds better, thanks to it's lock system. And support more plug-in/out than HDMI, again a welcome addition for laptops.

    - Finally, you have the new one, version 1.2. This is the best best in the computer world. You can:
    • Daisey chain several monitor together with one connector onto the system. (up to 6 displays I think - and up to 4 1920 x 1200 displays). So anyone can have dual/tri screen setup from a laptop easily. (Well you need the monitors for it, which right now, no one has made as it's still very new)
    • Carries Audio, Video, and USB from one plug. Allowing monitors to have USB hubs, and/or built-in cameras and/or digitize screen and/or multi-touch support for the screen, without the needs of an additional USB cable.

Display port 1.1 and 1.2 are backward compatible to 1.0 (the plug is the same).

Their is chance that your adapter is Display Port 1.0 to HDMI, meaning the audio is not carried.
Also, DisplayPort (all of them), support Display Port Hubs.

I don't understand what is the problem with IDT to refuse to support audio through Display port, under Windows 7. And I am surprsed that Dell, a strong supporter of Dispaly port, doesn't push IDT for support. Or at least, change audio chip on the E6610/E6510. (maybe it's a contract that Dell made with IDT or something to use IDT chip for the life time of the Latitude E6xxx/E5xxxx, and IDT get's away with a contact hole or something.
I don't know, but it sucks. It's not it's difficult to do, they did it on Vista.

I know it's "optional" things to support for display port. But, it like support USB but not put the power pin. What's the point?!
