I am faced with same dilemma ... what SSD should I purchase to upgrade my Dell Latitude D430?
I want to extend the life for another year or so ... any recommendations?

Go with what has been mentioned thus far in this thread. The Runcores would be the right idea it sounds price/performance.

Thanks for your reply - Runcore sounds like the solution for my Dell D430. :)

Just to mention that I recently purchased the SuperTalent zt2 zif drive from ewiz, price was around $110 (with coupon) for the 64gb version. This works really well in the d430, the drive supports trim and benchmarks at 40MBs/82MBs seq write/read by AS-SSD. No idea what controller it uses but it is their newer generation, industrial grade SSD family.

Most balanced price, performance, power consumption ZIF SSD is the EWS720-based units, eg: http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...e-ews720-zif-ssd-user-review.html#post6952134. There's others listed at http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...-1-8-zif-pata-ssds-available.html#post6861746

Can you do a 'hdparm -i /dev/sda' on the ZT2 as well as do some CrystalDiskmark benchmarks? $110 for 64GB is a great price for a ZIF SSD.

Here are the Crystal Disk Benchmarks for the new Mtron SSD MOBI MSD-PATA3018 Solid state drive that I installed in my Dell Latitude D430:

    [IMG][IMG]

The installation was easy as the access to the original HDD was just underneath the removable battery.
I used Acronis to clone the old drive and was up and running in 15 minutes.

    • Can anyone suggest why the Write scores are lower than expected?
    • Any ideas on how to improve the overall SSD performance?
    • I would like to match the benchmarks posted by Nando4 below on line 2?

Review the details in the following articles, particularly the first one, to see if they result in improved the performance. Though 20MB/s 4kb reads place it near the top of the performance chart and SLC SSDs have slower writes than MLC ones.

Try changing the caching options Device Manager > SSD > Properties > Policies.

How much does the SSD help the little D430? Your still stuck with 2GB and a 1.2ghz cpu. (If your lucky and have a late model, you maybe have a 1.33ghz)

I mean I see drive peformance numbers, but how much does it help Windows performance as a hole, outside loading times.

The problem is partly the limitation of the SSD I think in terms of an added price/performance toss-up. We had issues other than the SSD with the D430's that I had available, so I disposed of the machines and I've ended up replacing them with more of the Fujitsu PH530's that I bought a while back, fitted with the X25-M. MUCH better.

In hindsight I should have pulled the SSD's out before we got rid of them and given them away here, but I couldn't be bothered. Sorry.
