no antenna and i'd rather leave the wwan slot open when I want to upgrade to that. also, I did insert it in the wwan slot but vista never detected it. maybe I got a defective one but I'd rather just get the 365 instead.

    Received my refurb E4200.

FYI, put it on a kitchen scale as I was curious about its weight:

    Laptop: 1.870 lbs
    6 cell battery: 0.825 lbs
    Total: 2.695 lbs

In case it makes a slight difference, it has a 128gb SSD, WWAN, bluetooth, backlit keyboard

It's time to buy a new kitchen scale . Trust me, your scale is totally wrong :D

I got the samething as your without WWAN. weight less than my x301!

    How much does yours weigh?

Someone else earlier in this thread posted these weights:
So on my scale my laptop is 0.065 lbs heavier than that one (which I recall was pretty stripped). Not sure how much more weight the other components in my configuration add, but it's not *that* far off is it (about 1 oz)?

IIRC, X300 starts at 3.1 lbs, so at 2.7lbs mine is still lighter than that.
ETA - Just checked X301 w/ 3 cell and no optical drive is 2.93lbs, but with 6 cell is over 3.3lbs

esskay, your numbers are right on the money. Your scale is perfectly fine, some minor variations are expected. We got the weight thing out of the way early on in this thread :)

Mine weighs almost exactly the same sans the WWAN. You can only really compare the E4200 with the X200s which is about 2.7lbs with the 4-cell battery and tops the 3lbs mark with the 6-cell (albeit not by much).

    Thanks, that's a useful list.

I have been checking the E4200 inventory at the Outlet. They seem to price the 64GB ultra SSD only slightly higher than the 128 mobility SSD. Is there a significant speed advantage with the ultra SSD on this notebook? Also, what is the maximum amount of RAM this notebook can have?

The difference is not in speed, so much, but in overall longevity given SSD technology. SLC vs. MLC. The mobility drives are plenty fast but the SLC technology is geared towards more professional requirements and it is expensive. I fear the consumer SSD market has been relegated to MLC nowadays.

Maximum amount of RAM on the E4200 is 5GB with the 4GB DIMM that costs upwards of $400

Got my refurb E4200 about 2 weeks ago now. I had an issue with the fingerprint reader so Dell sent out a tech to swap it it out. Guy finishes up and I see that the top lid is scratched to hell. I ask him and he shrugs his shoulders and leaves. I go onto chat support and tell them what happened. I'm thinking since it's a refurb they are not going to be too helpful on cosmetic things. Wrong! Send out the lid with a tech who just came to swap it out. Problem is that I use the WWAN card and he brought a lid without the antenna "fins". Tech calls his dispatch and I'm thinking they are going to send out another part. Tech says they can send out the part or......a new laptop.

This is why I buy Dell for myself and my clients.

Thanks. I'm surprised that today there is still difference in usable life between SLC and MLC. Yes, those 4GB DDR3 SODIMM cost way more than 2x2GB modules.

Has there been any issue with running Windows 7 on the E4200?

I have been running it since the day I got my E4200. Runs like a champ. The only issue I have had is that after putting it into hibernate about 5 times the fingerprint reader doesn't want to read in Windows. Reboot fixes it.
