I don't know that they do make them without cases in the retail channel. You might be better off buying one of the 256GB 1.8" Dell SSD's on ebay...case already gone! :)

Dear Z600 owners, would you please clarify?
1)Do all Z600s have SIM card slot soldered on M/B (should be accessible under the battery i think) regardless of WWAN presence?
2)Do all Z600s come with a 2nd SSD cable, or only those that have second SSD factory installed?
3)Is place near SSD enough to install 2.5" ssd PCB?
4)Has anybody used built-in Wireless USB with other WUSB devices (i.e. non-dell)?
5)Has anybody used 'restricted' things over WUSB, like webcams or TV tuners, or.. USB-LAN?
6)Is inductive charging stand noisy? Do fans rotate based on temp? Do they stop when laptop need little power (i.e. standby with charged batt)?

I can only comment on #6. I have never heard the charging stand make ANY noise, whatsoever. If there is a fan in there, it never comes on.

I have the UWB card, but no devices to use it with.

Regarding the SSD, the mounting holes for the 1.8" SSD wouldn't match with a 2.5" SSD. You could secure the 2.5" by other means (sticky tape, etc), but really, there isn't much extra room in there. I don't have an uncased 2.5" SSD to test.

    Thanks, lancorp.
But.. #1? Do your specific Z600s have SIM slot?

    dvlad666,

Apparently, I was wrong about my statement regarding fan noise and the charging stand. I typically have only used the charging stand when my Z600 is operating.

This morning, I was annoyed, about every 5 minutes, with the fan in the charging stand turning on, running, then turning off. How did I know it was the charging stand? My Z600 was turned off! I had heard the sound in the past, but thought it was the fan in my Z600 that was coming on!

Now, I know...in summary--the fan in the Z600 comes on every 5 minutes while the Z600 is on the base. I just need to find a way to disconnect it. :)

Answers to your burning questions :)
    1) Sim card slot is where it is on all E-series latitudes..somewhere next to battery contacts. Just remove the battery and you'll see it.

    2) Mine was ordered with 1 x SSD and only came with the cable for the shipped SSD. NO 2nd SSD micro-sata cable present :(

    3) The spot for the 2nd SSD is just behind the trackpad, its a probably barely enough for the 1.8" SSD so there's no way a 2.5" with or without case will fit in there.

    4) I use a HP HS2300 minipci WWAN 3G card, all antenna wires already routed and present. Just plug in the card, simcard, drivers and voila!

    Hope this helps!

You're welcome..! Im now having horrible issues with consistent 50% chance of system lockups at the boot windows 7 logo. I've narrowed it down to the bluetooth driver coz it only started locking up AFTER I installed the bluetooth drivers. Anyone else had that issue?

I wish i could help you but i've not got my unit yet - only ordered via my friend in US, and he'll bring it to me in the 1st half of July...
BTW, i also had feared a lot about 2nd sata cable lack, so i finally decided to spend a buck on 2*256 unit. Overpriced and with stupid Vista. A pity lancorp did'n have one, as his items are of best value imho :(

But what i've found is the picture atteached! I think it'll help those who are like me investigating Dell Z600 internals.

Sorry to wake this Z600 thread once again, but...
I've ordered a Dell Outlet Z600 with an "encrypted" 256GB SSD, and I'm a little nervous about the encrypted part.
    1) Will I still be able to use my TrueImage backup software to back up the entire hard drive to my external USB?
    2) Does the encryption slow the performance down (at all)?
    3) Is there any way to disable the encryption option in the BIOS? If so, can you "unencrypt" an entire drive without re-installing the OS?
