Are you referring to the one posted by thewore? It doesn't solve the problem. Also, I have the latest bios (A07). Brightness doesn't change using the scroller in Mobility Center, not does it change using fn up/down keys if the ambient sensor is off. The only way to change brightness is to keep the ambient sensor on.

He seems to say that after you do the Mobility Center slider thing, then the FN +/- keys work, when ALS is disabled.

I have the E4200 with the same exact problem in Win7. It is the only reason why I am running Vista on it. I need to be able to adjust brightness with ALS off.

Rather than downgrade to Vista from 7, I've opted to put a small sticker over the ALS, lol. This came to me after long minutes of conteplating how to fix it programatically. Doing this allows for the full range of brightness and has the same effect as disabling ALS, except adjusting brightness works.

That's a very good solution. Maybe black electrical tape works well, too. Has anyone tried the latest Windows 7 RTM and see if this problem is still there?

I'm using Windows 7 RTM and the problem is still there.
I'm curious when Dell will start supporting Windows 7

DCP System Manager has been updated to A12. After removing A11 and installing A12, the brightness controls now work - ALS enabled and disabled!

Okay, so that worked for a while, but it's gone back to not being able to adjust brightness in Windows, ALS enabled or disabled, period. I uninstalled the ALS software and now can set the brightness only with ALS enabled. Not perfect, but I can live with that...
