My E4300 laptop was having the same issue where I could change the brightness up to the point where I log in. I think I've found a solution.

Run services.msc and look for a service called Dell Control Point System Manager. Stop this service and see if it gets you anywhere. I've set the service to disabled rather than automatic. You may need to disable the service called Ambient Light Sensor also.

You can stop the services temporarily to see if this resolves the issue. If yes, you can change the service to disabled to prevent it from starting.

I installed the latest intel video drivers from Dells website (released a couple of days ago) and it fixed the brightness issue. I can now manually controll the brightness within win7 using the fn + up/down keys.

I'm hit by this irritating problem.

I installed windows 7 and all the drivers. The ALS automatic adjustment didn't work, but I could adjust my brightness whether I set the ALS enabled or disabled.

Then I decided to install Vista's ALS driver. The ALS still didn't work, so I unistalled it. Now, I can only adjust the brightness with the ALS enabled and when I adjust the brightness in Window's Power Settings, it doesn't automatically update to the new brightness. I've to enable disable and re-enable ALS before I get the new brightness.

    Anyway to fix this?
