For me, the ability to dock is absolutely wonderful.

Being able to go to school/work and just push 1 button and go is great instead of having to plug/unplug everything every time.

I don't think I could ever go back to an undockable laptop after this.

By my experience, removing IRRT mode support does not address all latency issues... there seem to be many latency considerations on road warrior/business class notebooks designed to modulate heat generation and energy consumption. From Dell's perspective, shipping IRRT mode enabled simply means shipping SATA + IRRT support vs. SATA support only, imo. Road warriors are the intended market for IRRT.

The general view is that it won't work unless you have a BIOS that supports the device and that, at the moment, is reserved for the Precisions. However, I agree that it would be a very useful feature.

Hello again everyone. I'm running into a strange problem with my E6410. Today, for the second time, I turned on my laptop and the backlight didn't even come on at all. I could look really close to the screen, and see the image, but there was no brightness and the brightness controls did nothing. I turned it off and then back on, and it was fine.

This happened twice in the two months that I've had it. The first time I thought it was just a fluke but this time I'm a bit worried. I'm typing this message on my E6410 right now and everything is working fine, but this is the second time I've turned it on with no backlight and had to power cycle it to get my screen back.

In the ten years or so I've been working with computers for my career, I've never ran into a problem like this. I always find that either the backlight always works, or it's dead. During my career, I've never seen a sporadic inverter problem.

    Any ideas?

Make sure you have the latest drivers for your graphic card. That is usually the problem.
Be sure to uninstall > restart your computer before installing the latest drivers, If you have the Nvidia solution, getting the latest drivers feature a 'remove and clean previous driver' (or something like that) in the driver setup, which I suggest to check.

If that doesn't help at all, then it could be the switch system that is not working correctly of the monitor, or the LCD has a hard time turning the back-light properly, which would mean to request a new screen lid and LCD.

It's really weird. I have the latest BIOS, but I don't think it's a driver issue because the problem happens even at the Dell logo, and I've had the problem with Windows 7 and Arch Linux so far.

I have Complete Care on this laptop, but before I call into Dell, I need to investigate this more.
