Yeah, that's a good kit of bits. May run warmer, and shorter on battery power, but you'll enjoy it. The HDD will be plenty fast... an SSD is still a premium upgrade you can do anytime. Running two drives won't help your 6-cell duration.

    Hi,
I am new here and looking to replace my old laptop. I stuck in decision and will really appreciate your help. At work I can get a good deal on Latitude E6410 with i7-640M, WXGA+, nVidia and 320 HDD for 1030 USD. I read this thread and really think that will be happy with this machine. But Intel will release Sandy Bridge in January. So the question is – should I wait for another few months or not? I know – this is not new question here – but I can not decide and really need your help. I definitely can wait for few months – but will it worth?
    Thanks a lot in advance.

    If you can wait.. wait..
You'll get a different opportunity.. if it's not a work special, it will be you calling Dell, and negotiating over the phone.
The special that you have at work, is because it's exactly what you said (in my opinion, no fact), that Intel will release a CPU, and that mean... the Latitude E6420 in mid 2011, if I am not mistaken (people here knows more about Dell cycle.. I just got my first Dell laptop, the E6400 2 years ago)

Thanks a lot, GoodBytes for Your opinion. We have permanent discounts for dell products under the special program for last 10 months. I will have to upgrade in next 2-3 months any way. And it is just on the edge between two Intel platforms. That is why it is so hard to make a decision. We have big discounts for MBP13 right now that is definitely a sell off coz price dropped 200 USD for 2.4 GHz model.
    Thanks one more time.

Forget about MackBook Pro... Apple Windows drivers for the system is utter garbage. No power optimization, so your battery is crap, and performance is also low when compared to a PC with the exact same specification.

At work, I use an last gen iMac with Win7 32-bit (I can't put 64-bit.. no drivers), and I keep battling myself with the system (not very responsive), and with the lack of any HDD light indicator, it doesn't help. The office will get me a PC at the next order cycle when they will buy a bunch of new Dell's to replace old many computer, so that we can transition to Win7 64-bit.

But of course, as you guessed, MacOS experience is like when your use WIn7 64-bit on a new PC with similar specification. Everything is smooth as melted butter. Obviously Apple will do everything to show how their OS is better.

My only worry about waiting would be to discover that the E6420 comes with a 16:9 display.

They wouldn't do that in the middle of a generation (E series) you think?

That would throw a few things off IMO for IT staff.

    There is a precedent: E6500 = 16:10; E6510 = 16:9.

I want to say, "Then good, because now no one will buy it, and probably Dell will need to sell it at cost so that means big savings"
But, I have feeling it will still sell like hot cakes, as too many people think that 16:9 is very good, due to their brain washing they got from all the advertisement and sales people when buying a HD TV, hence they don't know what 16:10 is, or think black-lines when playing 1080p content = very bad.

A06 BIOS was posted 12/2/2010, but when I download it and try to install on my just purchased from outlet E6410, nothing happens after pressing OK on the initial install window.

    Anyone else have this problem?

    Also my E6410 takes over a 90 seconds to boot (i5 520M - 2GB - WD160GB WD1600BEVT 5400 ). I plan to get another 2GB ram module. Do I have to match the installed Hyundai p/n HMT125S6TFR8C-H9, DDR3 PC3-10700 (667MHz) (DDR3-1333) with another exact module?
It appears to be running at 7-7-7-20 532.1MHz --- according to Piriform Speccy

Dell only sells 1gb modules for the E6410 according to their website.

    Would this module be compatible?
    Newegg.com - Crucial 2GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500) Laptop Memory Model CT25664BC1067
    Crucial 2GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500) Laptop Memory Model CT25664BC1067
it has CAS latency of 7 and has positive reviews. I don't know what the "(PC3 8500)" means or whether it's important when pairing with the installed Hyundai.

I was thinking about ordering this for the replacement drive
Amazon.com: Hitachi Travelstar 2.5 Inch 500 GB 7200 RPM SATA II 16 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive 0S02858: Electronics
    500gb 7200 hitachi

Any suggestions on how to speed up boot time would be appreciated.
My Vostro 3300 i3 boots in under a minute, also running Win 7 32bit professional.
I uninstalled the ControlPoint Security Manager, but it didn't make a differencein boot time.
