Very nice, I assume you had the lower resolution screen before? Yeah, once you go with the high rez option, it's hard to look at other laptops w/out it.

I vaguely recall the modem port cover having a small hole in it... and using a paper clip end to pull it out.

If overbuilt means heavier then that's not attractive for those who have to carry their computers a lot.

But it isn't anywhere as easy as the removable base which then gives access to almost everything.

No screw is the normal arrangement. The ODD has its own latch.
That's about right. Mine has a 9 cell battery but if it had a 6 cell then it would be just on 5lbs.

Yeah, there is a hole. I don't have a landline, but I'll fiddle with it some more one day.

    I assumed from this page

    Documentation

that the optical drive should also have a screw securing it since it instructs you to first remove the screw before releasing the latch. Am I wrong? There's just an empty screw hole now.

Well John what can I say, I love servicing my own stuff.

In all honesty, I don't feel a real significant weight reduction from my D620 (6 cell) to my E6410 (6 cell). Maybe a few ounces, but again not very significant for me.

I see that as a reminder to service personnel to remove the screw if it is there. Neither my E6400 nor my E6410 had a screw in that hole, nor would I expect them to since the quick-release mechanism on the optical drive wouldn't work. I believe that the screw is an option for organizations that want to discourage their computer users from removing the ODD by inserting that screw.

Sleep in peace on this issue. The ODD will only come out if you use the release mechanism.

Yes. Dell offer the i7 620M / i7 640M and, if I recall correctly, someone reported that the i7 quad core CPUs also work in the E6410. However, the cooling system is not designed for the 45W CPUs.
